  • Thank you for the wonderful feedback on our Dock Talk series with Nigel Calder. We heard you loud and clear - more Jeff, more Nigel and more Solar! In the first part of this two-part series Jeff, Nigel and special guest, Tom Whitehead, discuss the importance of a good solar controller and why some are very different from others.

    Hey Jeff, You need to let your guests talk more! Most of us have already heard your stories and advice many times! :)

    Very valuable broadcast! One humble request: let the guest experts talk a majority of the time.

    Was looking fwd to hearing Tom talk on controllers but that didn't happen as Jeff would not shut up. When Tom did talk he was replying to Jeff's rant rather than lead the session with what he thought we need to know about mppt.
    Ditto when Nigel come back. Your rant re Tall trees, quiet solar, noisey generators blah blah blah not required. Let him talk. Sorry for the criticism but your guest chat sessions have the potential to be helpful to us boaters, im just doing my bit to see that happens. Also, I'm Australian and we tend to say it like it is , politeness comes second.l laughed when you asked Nigel to talk about flex panels and he said "no ide rather talk about cells" that was gold lol.
    Edit Oops just realised some of my comments refer to part 2.

    This was my first experience with this channel. I think it’s safe to say that there’s arguably no one in the world more knowledgeable than Nigel on the topic being discussed. Just my opinion, but I found it frustrating to have the host use as many words as Nigel just to say “I agree” to Nigel’s points.
    Sincerely offered in the spirit of constructive criticism here: with an opportunity to learn from the world’s leading expert, I’d suggest that a host only interject *brief* and specific clarifying questions, let the expert do >95% of the talking, and eliminate the “I agree”’ interjections and random anecdotes.
    Nonetheless, I found a lot of value of here. Subscribed. 👍🏻

    Great content! For a 6 battery, 6 volt golf cart battery flooded lead bank, wired in series and parallel, where would you suggest attaching a Smart Sense monitor? Closest to the charger/MPPT or furthest?

      @PacificYachtSystems  2 года назад +1

      I'd get the battery voltage from the positive post battery at one end of the bank and get the negative at the other end of the bank. Basically you want to get the voltage across the whole bank and not just one pair of 6 volt battery in series.

    Since charge controllers have dual functions (optimizing the wattage out of the PV array, and optimizing the charging of the battery), does anyone make separate units? It would seem that each battery should have its own BMS, and each panel, windmill, etc. it’s own MPPT. This way, every component would be optimally used.

      Only aware of controllers that do both in one device and not seperate.

    Hi Jeff.
    I love this. I am a fellow sail boater. I am going all electric with a 48 volt system. I have space for three 310w 33v rigid panels. Q? Is it better to get individual boost controllers for each panel, or go series with all three panels with blocking diode between each panel. Would it be better to go with smaller panels and make say 3 banks of three 100w panels. And controller for each bank. Space should be about the same. Dilemma! As usual cost is always a consideration.
    Great channel and thanks so much for posting this.

      That's a tough question, because there are so many options to consider. Considering the wattage, array voltage, and the fact you have 3 panels, suggest you go with boost controllers and keep the solar voltages below 60 volts.

      @@PacificYachtSystems thanks Jeff. I take it you’re recommending staying below 60 v for the safety factor. Appreciate your time.

    Why not use a solar combiner to combine multiple panels/arrays then go to one MPPT controller?

    • @PacificYachtSystems
      @PacificYachtSystems  2 года назад

      You can definitely do this, either wiring multiple solar panels in series or in parallel to a single controller.

    Really informative video! Jeff, I’m not sure why others complained about you not allowing Nigel to speak. I found your conversation to be perfectly balanced. Your input enhanced Nigel’s explanations and helped put them in context. I learned from both of you and very much appreciate it. Well done!
