    to those scratching their heads, skip to 16:30 first to understand the nutshell. Then watch the preceding 15 minute details and it will all make sense. basically Its a "high amp" or for better terminology, a "high power" alternator that cheats the system by charging its own battery bank (at 4 times the voltage) all too keep current down, wire size down and control heat and, most importantly, make lots of power for the battery bank in a more fuel efficient manner. Brilliant idea. its own bank is the one responsible for doing the actual work and charging the boat banks via a dc to dc charger. Great video and info. the whole system kills many birds with 1 stone. less Heat, smaller cable size, more power, better fuel efficiency... to take it 1 step further, utilize the 48 volt pack for a 3kw inverter and you've got yourself a nice little DC and AC generation system all peeling off the main engine in the event you do no have room for a stand alone AC generator

    How very, very timely for me in particular. In spite of my being 3 years late to the party, I am so looking forward to getting the further particulars. I am of Nigel's vintage and after 10 years up on the hard, have decided to finish off my life at sea back to sea. I've spent the last 6 + months trying to decide on buying enough vintage Cummins engine parts or repowering more modern for my motor sailer, going electric propulsion(?) and as well where I would put an auxiliary generator with an hydraulic PTO for anchor redundancy and crab & shrimp pot hauling. This is the light at the end of the tunnel. Bravo!

    Excellent video! As a liveaboard/workaboard vessel that currently has a cantankerous generator we have been keeping an eye on this technology since we first heard about it. Nigel easily explained what is otherwise technical information well above my pay grade. Now we are even more intrigued. Lisa was watching and her first thought was, "you mean if we could get rid of the generator we could finally put a combo washer/dryer in that spot?!" Thank you for creating this video. We'll give it a share on our Facebook page.

    Great and information-packed lecture. I have a recent edition of Mr. Calder's book on electrical/mechanics of one's boat. It is immensely helpful because of the level of details. I am currently designing/modeling a custom catamaran that I like to describe as "where Jacques Cousteau meets Captain Kirk". Thank you again. I would love to meet Mr.Calder if at all possible.

    Looks like a great system. If the PMA was driven from the shaft with appropriate clutch arrangement you would have a spectacular hybrid system. This would add electric propulsion and hydro generation capability. Also water cooling would be nice.

    Always had the Mechanical and Electrical Bible on my boats and had confidence in the Calder authority but this would be more of a gift to cruisers if it was priced as a super alternator rather than a high output stand alone generator. Let's talk about cost per watts and whether it represents value for money. As tempting and desirable as it is my only question to Nigel would be, if you were digging in your pocket to pay for this system would you but it?

    • @oceanplanetenergy
      @oceanplanetenergy  Год назад

      It depends on how much charging power is needed in a system, and what the other options are for power generation. Compared to installing a 10kW AC generator, and at least 8kW of AC/DC chargers (to match the charging power of an Integrel), the cost of an Integrel system is a relative bargain.
      However, there are certainly other high-power alternator options now available (in both 24V and 48V). Perhaps not quite so powerful as the Integrel but still far more than in the past. For example, see: oceanplanetenergy.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/86/2023/03/HPI-comparison-sheet-OPE-new.pdf
      Each boat's needs must be evaluated, and the appropriate system has to designed.

  • @josidasilva5515

    An external lightning/surge protector controlled by your system would keep the loads intact in case of a strike.
    Based on your graphics, it seems that it would be more efficient to use electric propulsion with regen, a small battery and and an intermittent motor generator.

    Thankyou for the video, there is one question i would like to ask is that i plan to install a 4 blade propeller instead of the standard 3 blade propeller on the sail drive (SD60-4 model) which will have the effect changing the power output curve of the upgraded motor (4JH80 Yanmar) for the balance 526. How would i change the program characteristics on the integral to suit the non standard configuration

    • @oceanplanetenergy
      @oceanplanetenergy  3 года назад

      Hi David, visit our website (oceanplanetenergy.com) and contact us there. But the quick answer is that if the engine has J1939 CANbus data output, the Integrel will use that data to prevent overloading the engine.

  • @gregb7353
    @gregb7353 4 года назад +2

    Really interesting presentation. I can't help but think that while the electrical design is naturally top notch, the mechanical side isn't ideal. Is there any reason that you don't simply use larger electric motors attached directly drive to the drive shaft of the engine? This eliminates the belt, allows it to use the same water cooling of the engine and massively increases the ability to generate electricity. It also allows you to turn the diesels off and power the drive shaft with the electric motor when it makes sense.
    Of course this would only make sense with Li-ion batteries, but really they are the only batteries that will matter in the future. They already beat out all other forms in every way except up front cost. That is changing and soon even the up front cost will be near lead acid.

    • @oceanplanetenergy
      @oceanplanetenergy  4 года назад +8

      You're describing a parallel hybrid system, exactly like what's offered by Hybrid Marine UK, and Electric Yacht, etc. We (OPE) offer such systems however they are a bit expensive and haven't really taken off yet, despite the obvious functional practicality. Note that a dual clutch config is necessary, to have the added benefit of power regeneration when under sail (disconnect motor/s from engine, while being attached to the shaft).

    How are other sources of electrical input (solar, wind vane, shore power) incorporated into this system? Thank you.

    • @oceanplanetenergy
      @oceanplanetenergy  2 года назад

      It's no problem to have multiple charging sources for a common battery bank, as long as they all have the proper programming. That is, they should have the same target voltages, absorption time, etc. that is appropriate for the batteries being charged. Effectively, all the sources contribute to the charging for as long as the batteries can absorb the current before reaching target voltage.

    If I installed this system on an RV, would the system be able to tell from engine load % that I was using low gear to control my speed going down hills and then send more current through the energizing cables on the generator? This would mean you regenerate energy from engine breaking while it was helping you burn off or maintain speed and save your brakes.. I'm thinking about installing this system on a class A RV as well as boats / yachts ...

    • @OceanPlanet60
      @OceanPlanet60 4 года назад

      There already are RV's using 48V alternators & batteries (actually, 51V lithium). It's a matter of fitting in the alternator with a sufficient pulley ratio and properly designing the overall system. If the engine has CANbus data output with load data, the regulator can add or subtract the charging load to appropriately load the engine.

    • @zealotz556
      @zealotz556 4 года назад

      @@OceanPlanet60 then if im correct, downshifting would show 0% load and then the regulator would load up the engine, thus generating massive amounts of power and helping slow down the RV..

    • @OceanPlanet60
      @OceanPlanet60 4 года назад +1

      @@zealotz556 Somewhat true. However the alternator will never generate more than it's usual max output at normal engine rpm (in the case of the Integrel, 8-9kW). For the very powerful regen braking you may be thinking of, it would take a larger electric motor/generator (as in a hybrid or electric vehicle) and a large high-voltage battery bank. Such Hybrid/EV systems are typically built around a 360Vdc battery bank. A different dimension than what the Integrel system is.

      I'm sure you could set up a system to do so as several third party battery monitors and the Lithionics BMS are all capable of Auto starting a generator. However, they may not be the best idea for starting a propulsion engine automatically. It would have to be thought out and set up so it wouldn't automatically start if it was in gear.

    My current 130 amp 12v alternator runs on a single 11mm V-belt. I have it regulated down to 70 amps to prevent the belt from overloading & slipping. Is that an issue with this system? What size mechanical drive line is needed to fully power this unit? Also, where can I buy this impressive new device?

    • @OceanPlanet60

      The Integrel is added on as a 2nd alternator, and uses 8 groove serpentine pulleys and belt. Even with a regular alternator upgrade in the stock alternator position (for instance to a Balmar or APS) we never use V belts anymore.

      The new Balmar 96 series 48V have 60A and 100A versions. Coupled with a Wakespeed AP500 regulator (with programmable rpm based loading curve), you'd have a sort of mini-Integrel system. You might not. You just add the capability to get significant charging done while while motoring. So with adequate battery capacity to last until motoring again, you wouldn't need to run the engine any extra hours. And if you did need to recharge before the next trip, with the powerful efficient charging you wouldn't need to run it very long.

    • @OceanPlanet60

      No. Balmar is a mfg of different (smaller) alternators than Integrel. Which is the best choice for any particular vessel depends on the loads, and the required recharging needs. For many boats, a Balmar or APS (American Power Systems) alternator may be plenty of power. However the Integrel provides the most power possible. Especially at lower rpms.

      Yes, there are many of these systems installed all over the world. A single system is around $18,000 before installation, and a dual system (for instance on a catamaran) is around $33,000 before installation. So, they are not inexpensive. However the Integrel is the most powerful alternator system available, and less expensive than a fully installed generator. Note that there are other high power alternators that are slightly less power than the Integrel, that however are enough for many yachts. Which is best for any particular yacht depends on the electrical loads on the yacht, and the recharging time desired by the user.
