Nice to hear from someone who thinks about doing something right. Im retired. I have been a mechanic most of my life. First 30 years auto then an M.E.M at the airport. I operated and repaired all types of equipment in steel fabrication. After being a mechanic for 57 years i still like leaning new things. I still love my tools. Your one of the very few mechanics today would considerto work on my own car. Thats not an insult. One proplem is getting reliable info today. Thank you for taking pride in the work you do.

And to check the Harley Davidson manual for instructions which does nothing for my door knob related application. Or the "Why do these damned metric screws keep coming out of these stupid lawn chairs mom just loves even though they are designed to fall over in the wind which pisses her off?" application. (I think they were coated with some kind of red the first time from the factory. Had to take them apart when we moved.) I did get DON'T USE GREEN pretty clearly as I would like to service it without a cutting torch in the future, if needed. I'm thinking blue but now I'm all confused. Where is Wranglestar when you need him? Oh! Found it.

Service manual for my bike requires new bolts every time you take a front calliper off. Reason stated - ALOC. I.e. anaerobic locking compound. Bought a set - they do indeed come with some pink stuff on there, and I'm sure it's a very neat solution which won't leave fouling in the hole.
For 6 quid PER BOLT though, I bought a bottle of Loctite 2701 instead. Per the datasheet, it actually gets _stronger_ when it's hot. Completely flat ageing profile at 120°C, gains about 10% at 150°C. Can't argue with that, those bolts never get that hot. Even though it's "green" and "high strength", the breakaway torque doesn't exceed 60Nm for M10 bolts, which those are, and they nominally get done up to 45Nm.
They do recommend disassembling while hot, but I don't think in this case that's necessary. Nor is it a good idea to apply so much heat right next to fork oil which isn't meant to get this hot.
Other handy information from the datasheet - it'll tolerate some contamination, engine oil & brake fluid don't touch it, soaking it in petrol actually strengthens the bond, onpt ethanol has some weakening effect, but not enough to notice.
The annoying part is cleanup, but I have the sneaking suspicion that an M10 tap & die will make that process MUCH easier.
Anyway, read the datasheet, folks! It'll tell you all sorts of useful information so you can make a properly informed decision.

    Thanks for the video !
I took your advice while reassembling the inner primary on my 2000 Road King. The Harley manual calls for loctite 262 so not being able to find it locally I drove to
the Harley dealer. They tried to sell me 271 for the compensator bolt. I asked for the manager in hopes of understanding why the dealer didn't sell the 262 pointing out to him that it was for sell on Harley web site and that manual says to apply 262 to the compensator bolt. The dealer manager could not answer my problem but gave my a bottle of a lock tite that wasn't sold to the public, telling me that is what they use. The Harley web site shows it for sale, the Manual calls for it, the dealer doesn't sell it and none of the auto parts stores carry it, WOW! I love the USA.

Great video Shane. I appreciate it. I am an Apprentice Machine Repairman in the Glass Industry. We use many different Loctite's for many applications, many also high temp applications. I see many Journeyman using different Loctite's and now I have a better understanding of why. Sometimes it's hard for an apprentice to just "pick it up" or should I say automatically know what to use. Thanks to you video I may now be able to enter those discussions with knowledge.

I only use Blue loctite for Compensating nut and Clutch Axle nuts swing arm nut , anything 1/2 to 1/4 I use clear fingernail polish , I clean all Nuts Bolts with Mineral spirits and acetone before using thread lockers. I have owned 3 Harleys not had anything fall off or come loose. My stock EVO 1986 had red on the comp Nut I used a 3/4 Breaker bar and Tore a Primary chain in half . Took a 3/4 Impact set at 800 Pounds, 150 pounds in the air tank to back it off . The Book said the nut torque was 150 Foot pounds . Red takes 200 degree fahrenheit to get it gooey was not going to use a torch on my comp nut . So yes it does matter what your using .

Lemme add my 2cents to this and i know this is an antique thread,, im gonna use 6 loctite number 241, 242 & 243 blue and 271, 272 & 273 red,, My understanding is the differences or how i read them is as follows, 24x is blue/medium, 27x is red high strength, then ea one is a larger bolt size. Startinv with XX1 being for smaller bolts , xx2 med size bolts and xx3 is larger bolts, the breaking strength is do to the original torque value of ea bolt, i also believe theres a slight or subtle viscosity difference between say a xx1 and xx2 or xx3 that said you would most likely be fine with a xx2 where an xx1 is req but not an xx1 where a xx3 is req,, for majority of my work i will default to the xx2 as that is for bolts uoto 1" in either the 27x high or 24x med line.. ... like i said just my 2cents on how i work.. oh and i ONLY use loctite as my first choice and then permatex as my second choice

Hey Shane alot of things I’ve learned were from watching you and your students for hours on top of hours over the years. I follow everything that you do to a T but if I don’t know something, I research & research, asking questions and so forth. I’m never guessing and taking shots at things I know nothing about. That’s a problem with most power sports technicians everywhere, so for that reason I do my own work privately. I do share the Channel and your work with friends, family and other mechanics.
There is one Request I have … you need to make a video on how to replace and install cylinder base studs on two strokes, both single and dual cylinders. I think people need to know that information, because it’s very hard to find if you’re trying to do it the right way. Everyone has their different touch or method. l’ve heard some people Using loctite, Some use no Loctite, and Some use a slight bit of silicone on the threads. I’m building a Banshee at the current moment and there is no information on which Side of the stud Should be threaded into the cases, There is no specify torque spec for those studs Or installation instructions in The service manual. I think People need to know that information and In my opinion you’re the best candidate.
      Thanks for everything Shane 🤛🏽

    • @How2Wrench

I would break it down into air-cooled vs liquid cooled. Over the years I really got the oppertunity to compare many models and this was a big factor. Also a space for much debate. For example Twin Cams stock OEM piston to cylinder clearence is (your your model) .0014-.0025". Pretty tight on the bottom end of the scale for a large air-cooled piston. Metric motors are running similar numbers.

Don't mind that at all, Shane. In fact, it makes a lot of sense to keep things simple like that :D As I mentioned in another comment, I'll be rebuilding the old Tomcat I've had in the garage for almost 3 years. I threw a rod going at about 140mph on the Autobahn and the engine caught fire. Luckily I, nor anyone else, got hurt and I was able to extinguish the fire rather quickly with the help of another driver (I since then always carry an ABC extinguisher in my car!). I've got a working engine lined up (from a ZZR1100) and a spare frame as a replacement as well as new shocks, fairings, etc. I'll be looking forward to getting in touch with you by then. Take care!

    Hi Shane,
recently I had the negative lead come loose from the battery terminal on my 2000 Nightrain. It took out the rectifier/regulator, and melted most of the terminal.
I replaced both, and just last weekend again [after about 1000km or so] it was cranking really slowly. Again that same bolt on the negative terminal was loose.
The battery only came with a bolt and a flat washer.
I put a split washer in there, but it still came loose.
Should I have used some kind of locktite in there?
    If so, which type?
The manual I've got does not specify a torque value for the battery terminal bolts [and you wouldn't get a socket in there, anyway] but I'm thinking it wouldn't take much to over tighten it - the terminal post is lead, yes?
    I'd appreciate your thoughts.
    :)

Perfect example of when to question just "fixing" with loctite! Harley Davison had a recall and 2006 on the Dina super glide where they rerouted the battery cable I believe. Before jumping to Loctite which should be fine I would consider whether the battery cable has been changed altered misrouted or simply needs to be recalled check with the dealer first. Please share the results from checking if there was a recall and share this video with your friends and support the channel thank you so much.

Does anyone know about which number of LOCTITE I should use(now checking the water pump)?

THis is a very good point in this video. I really cant stand it when people use the color as reference. There all all strengths of all colors it seem. (Blue Red) and different strenghts and removability of the same color. I learned about green loctite gromclickspring here on youtube its a substitute for soft solder for rods mounted in holes. Then you also have loctite plumbing sealant.

Keep in mind many of these videos are for students in training "the first time". I coukld say all day long, "Read the manual and use the correct one" b ut there are many people going off "good enough" or thats what they were taught (as in bad habits. Hope this helps you understand why the detail and length of many of the videos. Most all the content after 2018 is shorter and more DIY focused.

Why bother using colour as a reference when the manufacturer uses a number! If I wanted to buy loctite and asked for ‘red loctite’; they would ask me for a reference number and or what I was going to use it for, to be sure I got the right product. It is not very helpful to use ‘common parlance’ in a ‘globally’ broadcast infommercial. Incidentally a large proportion of men are colour blind and the terms high and medium strength are relative terms so not very helpful. However, I appreciate the wider sentiment of the video ; ‘don’t believe all you read or hear’.
