Tchaikovsky didn't write a cello concerto that we know of, but he came pretty close with this sublime piano trio where the cello plays so central a part, the foundation upon which the whole depends, if not always to the fore, with the fire of piano and violin; all through the cello provides the base, with her defining opening refrain and melody, something like a mother giving birth and guidance, from whom her offspring take inspiration, but far from always taking centre stage.
I swear every Tchaikovsky piece I hear I always forget the time. For example if the piece is 10 mins long, it would be like just 2 mins for me bcoz Tchaikovsky takes my time whenever I hear him.. BRAVO!
I also appreciate your civility -- a too-rare commodity on youtube. It's ironic that my original comment was meant to be in defense of the emotional warmth with which this trio is played here. I particularly enjoy its opening few minutes. The 6th Symphony, however, is too heavy with desperation and despair for my taste, even though I recognize it as great music. I prefer the uplifting 'heaviness' of music such as Beethoven's Ninth.
@davehshs I don't think I did suggest that it was you - my remark was addressed to what you said about the 6th Symphony, which believe to be among the greatest achievements in music. I respect your right to disagree with that and thank you for keeping your comment civil! RUclips is a great place for lively debate but I dislike it when it gets personal and offensive.
@davehshs By suggesting that Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony is 'in the Key of Self-Pity' you go way beyond the bounds of fair comment yourself. This music isn't mushy and over indulgent either. It is passionate, emotional and sometimes overwrought. It's also immensely skilfully written and technically superb. I thought we had moved on from the 1950s when Tchaik was regarded as the lowest of the low..? The playing here is lovely and very far from a "goopy disgrace".
@ComposerInUK I agree with you that the playing here is very far from a "goopy disgrace." If you'll read my comment again, you'll see that it wasn't I who called it that.
@marcusantonius90 You left off the "for my taste" that I wrote after "too heavy with desperation." And you ignored the fact that I acknowledged the 6th as great music. Also, notice that my original comment was criticizing someone for calling the playing of this trio mushy. I happen to really like this trio and a lot of other very emotional Tchaikovsky music.
@amazinglazedonut How can you call "mushy and overindulgent" the playing of any piece by the composer of the Symphony in the Key of Self-Pity (otherwise known as the Pathetique). Emotional indulgence was the keynote of much of Tchaikovsky's music, including this trio. You're entitled to your opinion, but calling their playing a "goopy disgrace" goes beyond the bounds of fair comment and is just offensive bad manners.
All the performers seem technically sound, but this interpretation is so UGH! WAAAAY too mushy and overindulgent. What a goopy disgrace to such a deep and impactful piece...
Two thumbs up from me. Beautiful peice of music by Tchaikovsky and wonderfully performed by gifted artists.
Yes, the trio's sound and ensemble feeling is perfect but the main thing - emotional filling - is just beyond praise!
Very good performance of this wonderful piano trio by Tchaikovsky..
GREAT TRIO !!!
Tchaikovsky himself would be deeply touched by the performance of his own Trio by this Trio!!!! I couldn't describe my LOVE in this performance.
Ian Fountain is such a talented pianist! I love him since I heard his EMI debut album long time ago. Great trio!
The first line of cello amazes me and the sound of this cellist is fabulous!
She almost sounds like a viola!
ohlala c'est si beau !!!
Tchaikovsky captures the fragility of happiness beautifully in this trio....
he was a great being..
At 2:19 I love the proud, ecstatic expression on the violinist's face. Music's a beautiful thing.
An extraordinary pronunciation! This performance earns all my best compliments!

@pianobug92 The piano part? It's really hard!! Good luck! You'll need two more people to enjoy it. :)

First and most importantly the playing is very nice but I'm not digging everyones choice of concert attire.
