Cabin Fever | Late Winter Fly Fishing

  • Towards the end of winter and even into the early days of spring, cabin fever begins to set in for most fly anglers and outdoor enthusiasts. Even if the opportunity does arise to spend some time on the water, the fishing is never easy this time of year. In this video we use multiple winter time approaches to help increase stealth in this low and slow small stream. As luck would have it, we must have hit up this section of water at a good time! Plenty of action on nymphs brought multiple brown trout and rainbow trout to the net, and even a surprise native brook trout from the upper reaches of the watershed. Hope you enjoy the video, and we hope it helps to alleviate some of that cabin fever for the next few weeks! Tight lines and good fishing!

    Started fly-fishing as a kid, and did some horrible fly tying. I wish I knew where the hell my life went, but I can say this boys and girls, carpe diem. And I need to get back to my roots before it's too late. Thanks for sharing.

      Kathy, Pennsylvania is basically shutdown as well due to COVID-19. However, fishing is if not the best at social distancing. Stay healthy to you and as well as Backyard Angling. Looking to getting out within next few days.

    I fly fish in the Smokies, within GSMNP....I only target wild fish, but you do see stockers that were stocked outside of the park swimming upstream into the park during the colder months. Other than the obvious signs (clipped fin, etc), the two indicators of a stocked fish for me are: 1. Larger than average size and 2. Lack of fight. I've seen a 6 inch wild 'bow outfight a 12 inch stocker in the same stretch of stream.

    The only way I can tell if a fish is stocked is a clipped fin, or if I’m keeping them and when I cut into the fish if it’s meat is pink or not, if the meat is pink it’s a native or an old hold-over

    • @BackyardBassin
      @BackyardBassin  4 года назад

      Clipped fin is about all I know. My understanding is for holdover stocked fish they will also have pink meat based on their diet being the same as a wild trout for an extended period of time. So tough to tell in my opinion haha. Thanks for the comment!
