Your content is the best! I love listening to every video you make, every point you make and every discussion is always well said and explained. You’re awesome, Salem!
I love your videos Salem and honestly, you’re one of the only video essayists who keep things honest and who I like. Wishing you all the best and I’m here with support for whatever direction your channel takes for the future!
You really nailed the head on the generational shift felt in social media. I look at my RUclips recommendations and don’t even know what to watch anymore - it’s all so boring/the same. I miss the days of RUclips where channels could thrive within smaller online communities instead of manufacturing the same content to survive in the algorithm. Thanks for your perspective on this; it makes me feel less alone 💖
I thought this was just me since some people I'm subscribed to are no longer active or they seem to repeat videos. I also miss the RUclipsrs who have now since then disappeared. But social media is always seeing changes.
I have spent the better part of a decade curating accounts. Maybe we should start something like "recommending cool accounts in different areas" in the sense of "shout out Thursday" on Twitter. 😂
Maybe the algorythm is different for me, because I get quite good recommendations that are really informative videos and are not about popular topics. I think it is because I try to look out things that interest me so the algorithm can learn what I like. Thanks to that I got recommended channel of a fish biologist, never in my mind would I think this is for me, but I really enjoy watching that creator. Before I was looking for things myself there wasnt really anything interesting only drama and vloggers. It really comes to your engagement, likes and the most important the search history. If you don’t look up things that are more obscure you will never get them recommended and by watching the basics and yt trending page you will be stuck in that echo chamber of lackluster content.
You said just what I was thinking. RUclips is my main source of media and lately it feels like everything is the same, no matter what hobby I look up. I get WHY everyone’s identical (💰) but there’s no soul to it..
I'm so happy you're speaking about this. Im not drawn to influencers as much as before. My attention towards them is really limited to commentary channels. Happy you're back and I respect your decision to not show your face,
"Forced diversity wouldn't be a thing if people were more open minded in the first place" And that's that on that, bestie!! So called ~forced~ diversity is only forced because it's conscious. And this, in my opinion, is not the bad thing people make it out to be. Not inherently, anyway. On one hand, forced diversity can be an issue because these characters are only crammed in to fill a quota. They aren't real characters, they're tokens. And That's Bad^TM. However, we can't hope to change anything if aren't making those conscious choices.
I made a comment about this, but I think the hype house/other tik tok houses might have been made all white to make people upset lol like, of course people want diversity. That’s all people have been talking about for 30 years. (Not to say the problem has been solved and everyone gets along lol ) but western audiences love diversity because the west is super diverse. They want to see people that look like them and their friends together.
@@mintyhippo8125 I don't think that the people making the decisions are gen Z, since they don't have the money to make the decision, nor the control. Most of these TikTok celebrities have handles, pr, etc, which are making the decision. The average age of those people is still 40+. Investors are still looked for and appealed to, which are still 50+. Etc.
@@eneyavorodecky but shows in the 90s and 2000s were very diverse. And gen z leaned about diversity everyday in school 20 years ago until today. Adults made the curriculum and shows back then lol
@@mintyhippo8125 there were no places like Hype house in the 00s. If you are talking tv shows, movies, etc, today is absolutely a lot more diverse. It's interesting that you picked an example that actually contradicts your point. We are comparing reality tv. Bc Hype house places are reality tv with a few extra steps. And reality tv was absolutely not more diverse then, I can assure you. But I am game. Let's compare. Please, pick a medium and we shall compare. Ok?
Hi. I'm an old 40 yo lady and I never really got into the whole influencer thing. I found your channel randomly and I just really wanted to stop and say... Your essays and other fun videos are amazing. You are very wise and self-aware. Your content is very thought provoking and I just think it's so important to listen to each other, especially the next generation. Please keep speaking up in the way that is healthiest for you. Your opinions are valuable! But most of all, you. Are. Valuable. No matter what! If you never post another video, that's not what makes you worthy, enough, and valuable. 💜
Very well stated... and yes she is valued. She is different and unique which is a breathe of fresh air on this platform. Like you, NotThe Illuminati, I am of the 1980s generation and what she speaks of is a ton of volume of wisdom and self awareness. She has what the school system calls... WithItNess. This means she is aware of herself and her whole surroundings. She is good for her own generation, but I would also say she is good for older and younger generations too. Anyways I just wanted to add to your comment and say thank you. Ase.
I agree! I’m 53 so I’m not “influenced “ easily 😂. I stumbled on her channel and subscribed because she’s “different”. Authentic, witty, creative and smart!
I'm another 80s baby who has been following Salem for a few years now. She is wise and thinks for herself. I love to see it, especially in the kind of culture we live in now that is so focused on outward appearance (not all that new, i know).
The fact that you “don’t look like the other influencers” is the reason I find your content more relatable. The fun all out pixie makeup, and just your face by itself, I feel like your eyes are honest. Then your arguments are logical, well thought out, and intricate. The videos you make are well edited too. Literally all I can ask for. I respect not wanting to show your face, I’m sure because this is the internet people are asshole. But I want you to know I think you are beautiful as you are. Okay - so about imposter syndrome. Thank you for talking about it. Literally all high achievers have it, high achieving creative people, content creators, scientists, PhD academics, and doctors. I’m a doctor, and half the time I feel like I’m faking and at some point people will figure out I’m a complete idiot. Anyway, I love your content and look forward to seeing more at the rate you’re able to create it without sacrificing your mental health.
Omg i'm an indian med student and highly agree with your imposter syndrome thing. Esp because asian parents can actually say things that might Accentuate that feeling. Love your comment ❤️
@@dragonsstars7734 TLDR: I still struggle with it. I use affirmations to help as much as I can. And therapy. I actually say 3 affirmations every morning. I pick 3 things that I am good at and remind myself that I have earned this. It’s really hard. I have them on sticky notes in my bathroom mirror. They change as my negative self talk changes. My friends and I do this thing where when we start negative self talk, we tell each other to stop it and say one nice thing about ourselves. It’s a very difficult thing to do. For example the other day I was saying stuff about how inefficient I am and can’t finish my notes on time because I’m dumb. My friend made me reframe this and say some thing nice, so I changed it to “I want to be thorough and make sure that my patient’s documentation is accurate and effective I’m their care”. Now that’s not one I would put on a sticky note because it’s too long. So I changed it to: I work hard to create positive outcomes for patients”. That’s one of my new affirmations. It’s very hard, and seeing a therapist throughout all of medical school was helpful too.
I relate to having impostor syndrome too but i hope u know ur doing great Salem. I love ur new stills, ur art is absolutely adorable and even though ill miss seeing ur beautiful self, the art does a great job representing u!! I'm sending love and strength ur way!!🥺💖
It's endlessly fascinating to me that the people in the public eye who have imposter syndrome are the ones going against the grain and standing out..being a true individual. Wouldn't logic dictate that the ones who are are looking exactly alike and desperately upholding the status quo are the actual imposters here?? The realist ones in the game could not possibly be the imposter if they are doing their own unique thing and not fitting into some mold. My favorite creators are the ones who don't fit the "norm". They don't look like everyone else and they certainly don't act like everyone else. Ask yourself this: How could you possibly be an imposter when you are an ORIGINAL.
I am an artist And i use a lot of video essays as podcasts or just background noise as i make art. What matters to me is what i hear, the vibe of your videos will not change to me at least. Happy u'r okay and back :) 💌
Who else felt stressed after watching this video, because she spoke the FULL TRUTH, and as a gen-z… we’re just not exposed to this type of hurtful truth.
im 42 with only a little trauma so i didnt feel stressed. i just felt really bad for everyone and really bad for POC content creators being called racial slurs ON TOP of being sent other hurtful messages and feeling inadequate. life is tough
This is very interesting to me and if you have the time, I would love to know more about what you're talking about. What hurtful truths have not been exposed to that is causing you stress? What are you told or exposed to instead that made you feel protected? How do you feel about knowing this truth? So many questions!
it was great to see you in the video keisha! i have been watching your videos for a while and seen you mention how you are struggling with things like this and i hope you are going better and i wish the best for both of you and your channels.
its hard to feel accepted when you dont see yourself represented. YOU are being the recognition u want to see which touches and inspires everyone you reach
As a person who is neither gen-z nor millenial (I was born in 1979,) I enjoy RUclips much more today then 10 years ago.In my opinion the variety of content has improved a lot - and it doesn't exclude certain age groups. Also the variety of creators is fantastic. As somebody who grew up without mobile phones and computers you are sometimes feeling left out in the social media world. I love being entertained with intelligent content, that helps to unwind the mind after a long day of work. For the brands, my generation seems not to exist, even though we have more free income than the average 15-25 year old. Many influencers are ignoring us as well -So hi there! We 40somethings are out here, too!😁👋 We are millions, and we love creators with a message.
I think this all the time! I feel like RUclips has had a renaissance almost. Like the quality has really improved and evolved. It’s just a different place now and it’s welcomed. I’m gen z millennial cusp
That was fantastic feedback! I was born in 83 (Im 39) and have a little following in my other channel, so Ive been wanting to do some truecrime for my followers (women my age-spanish) and just today was thinking about doing specifically cult cases as I think women my age we LOVE cults, and your comment hints me to do it 🍹
Exactly.. Born in 1972...I'm just glad we didn't have social media while I was growing up..seems everything is about clout and all followers less leaders. I agree w this entire discussion, true true. Salem is real an beautiful, honest, artistic great post.
I’m also I’m my 40s and I love listening to Salem’s take on things. I may not agree with everything but I think it’s important to hear another viewpoint in order to learn and grow.
I’m feeling all this! I’m not a content creator, but, I feel so deflated and couldn’t be less interested in social media as a result, I’m 29 now and have been online since I was a teen. Life has been wild and I’m so tired
If you feel like changing then change, it's your life really, do what feels right for you and those who really appreciate you for you will fully understand I am sure, I mean who doesn't changes along the way? It's part of the process of finding who we are and what we want in order to have the inner peace!
When we judge peoples past actions with our modern perspectives, morals, and standards, and then blame them for not living up to the metrics of the future, we play a stupid-ass game where no one wins.
So... when does accountability take place? Sounds like a convenient get out of jail for the real harm and trauma people have caused our cosigned compared to those who did right and were unproblematic the *whole* time.
@@stepahead5944 that’s not what the comment was talking about. It’s not saying no accountability should be taken. For example: Your parent punishing you as a teen, for something you did as a toddler. Or Your parent punishing you as a teen for not knowing what the adult version of you will learn. Always holding it over your head, diminishing/not acknowledging your growth. At each time period, you didn’t know better so, it’s not fair to the current you, to be punished harshly. A discussion, accountability, forgiveness should take place. Perspective. Grace. Understanding. However, if the person continues on with the issues, then that’s a different story.
@@stepahead5944 Why do you feel the need to hold anyone accountable? Think about that for a moment. Really Really think and what are you holding them accountable for? Is there a judge and a jury? I don't understand this very moralistic altruism. It feels like people are starting to notice this is a problem. It reminds me of very puritan ways and witch trials.
@@Willowtree82 So you don't want to hold anyone accountable... What about criminals? Should people who intentionally harm others not get any kind of punishment?
@@Willowtree82 while I’m not 100% this way or that, saying and holding values such as that people shouldn’t be racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic etc (aka protecting people and letting them live without feeling shame) isn’t the same as burning someone because you think they might be a witch for bestowing herbs with medicinal properties to people who asked them for help lol
I pretty much never comment on anything, but I just wanted to say that I’m sure we all support & understand your decision to not make videos with your face if you aren’t comfortable right now. Honestly, I usually play your videos while doing other things! I find it hard to do my regular household stuff without having someone to talk to me while I do it, so I regularly put on one of your videos or other video essay type creators. So if it makes you feel better, not seeing your face doesn’t make a difference to at least 1 person. Thanks for helping me get my laundry folded and floors mopped, though. I hope things are getting better for you! 🥺💖
Any recommendations to add to my list of good video essayists, the same or similar calibre to Salem? Love khadija mbowe, kat blaque, tee noir and the only channel run by a cow 🐮 but always looking for others I connect with Edit. Swoop too. How did I forget swoop 😱
@@roxannelilymaria2581 Nina Le and Shan Spears are amazing but if you like the content creators you've already listed you have probably seen both of these
I’m glad you’re doing what works for you. No explanation needed. I think these are very Gen Z struggles, as an elder millennial, it seems like everything gets called out to the point of absurdity. There is no room for human error and I think it has to do with the nature of youth. I hope it gets better with time. Cuz while I believe we need to hold people accountable when they mess up, it’s gotten to the point of absurdity where people are just BORED. If they have so much to say about your content…why don’t they go make their own? Ah right, cuz it’s easier to criticize others than self-reflect. All the best to you, Salem. You’re wise beyond your years. Now someone’s gonna call me agist….ahhhhhh! 😅
omg u drew her yourself?!? shes perfect!! also I watch illuminaughtii all the time so this is a fun change and I'm so glad you decided to give it a try!
i dont think it's flattering to compare salem to iillumii ... yes they both make good video essays but iiluminaughtii has publically shown herself to be a pretty two-faced and not sogood person. she is very ingenuine. salem is not.
@@n48_art lots of commentators who arent problematic like iilumnaughti is use 2d drawn avatars instead of their real faces though a good example of someone who uses 2D drawn avatars in the same style during commentary videos is TRO (therightopinion on yt)
Personally I love the mini-you, she’s ✨mega cute✨ and I’ll miss your face at the same time, but am just happy you’re going to be able to create content for us that YOU want to make in the way that YOU want. I just want to say I will definitely be continuing to support you for a loooong time forward because I really like you and your content ♥️, and honestly I relate a lot to the comparing your own self and skills to others alongside other things mentioned in this video.
Even though I am a gen z, older end but still… you are my favorite type of creator- long videos, thoughtful content, not saying “this is my opinion so it’s right” but just explaining all the sides you can find… and you’re just so relatable and.. the best
Browsing through the comments, it's easy to see that a good chunk of people like you for what you have shown us to be you/Salem. I can personally say that you seem like a good person and I just want you to be happy. No matter if you stop posting, post one video every few months, use an avatar, stick strictly to Patreon, etc. There is so much vitriol directed at others while being yourself on the Internet, I definitely understand fully why someone would not want to show their face. Whatever you do, Salem, I want you to be happy. ❤️ Absolutely beautiful song at the end. 🙂
I’m not fully through the vid yet… just wanted to say this makes 100% sense. It’s scary how putting yourself out there opens up that window to such nasty behavior from some people. I’ve always really enjoyed your video essays, and no matter what the aesthetics are (which that character is super cute anyway but not my point), your content itself (the writing, the research, the jokes) are fantastic! Do what makes you comfortable, “your people” are sticking around! 🙋🏻♀️ Signed, A Supportive Elder Millennial
Comment from a Gen Xer - In my personal experience watching RUclips the fundamental changes seem to be 1: The money used to as a reward AFTER the work had been put in, now the money/fame is the point of content creation (this is why everyone looks like a vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing, it's homogenised for the widest possible audience). 2: Gen Xers grew up needing educated parents + good schooling + access to public libraries + multiple newspapers to be able to get reliable and well balanced information - I did my entire education with no internet - so to be able to sit on my sofa and have a sushi expert from actual Japan talk to me at length about the importance of rice selection is genuinely MINDBLOWING. I imagine to Millennials and Gen Z all that info is like... wallpaper or something else no one really considers. 3: I'm going to stop, at this rate I may as well do my own video. 4: I love the new format and shall enjoy it while it lasts - very well done for constructing a way to create that suits your needs. 10/10 and a gold star x
Yay she's back! And hey, half the time I don't really watch videos, I listen. As much as I love your style and expressive face, your voice is really what draws me in.
I think salem's beautiful, let me start with that, but expressive? Many times I feel like it's the exact opposite and I feel like she doesn't express much through her face and has the same look on her face no matter what she's talking about. Idk, maybe I just don't watch enough to see it but so far I haven't noticed a lot of facial expression.
GIRL WE LOVE YOU. Do what you need to do!! Please, I’ve been thinking about making a RUclips for YEARS and haven’t because I’m scared to have to look at myself and have to deal with my dysmorphia.
honestly, you really don't need to show your face. sad that people don't want to watch solely bc of that, i hope you get better and don't stop yourself just because you feel the need to show your face!!! obviously do it if you want but a lot of popular content creators don't and that's completely fine!!
I personally love longer content because I like listening to it when I draw or just do general stuff because I hate being completely silent. Also I just like when people go more in depth about there points.
As a poc I purposely seek out other pocs, and on top of that I seek out genuine people. I agree with you that if you don’t personally go out of your way to support creators that look and behave differently then you’re partially to blame for the lack of diversity in all avenues.
I may have initially been drawn in to your channel by your gorgeous and whimsical exterior, but I have stuck around for your shining and just as equally lovely interior. You're so brave for taking the steps to make things sustainable for you and those who love you will always be here!! Wishing you nothing but the best.
This video is the last straw for me to dive into my art full time. I’ve been toying with opening a pattern and art shop and posting art content. I’m also a neuro spicy person and I’ve been scared and anxious about how I’ll be perceived but your struggles prove to me it’ll be ok in the end regardless 💖 I appreciate your work and most of all you, you’re human and your spirit really shines through your work regardless of the circumstances ❤️
yooo don’t doubt yourself. you’re literally such an amazing, well spoken, beautiful content creator!! you’re very inspirational and you just educate your viewers on so many broad topics and i really appreciate it.
Wow, your explanation on Imposter Syndrome really hit close to home for me. I had to literally pause the video and write this comment out because like, I'm *freaking* out over how accurate my personality aligns to the description you gave of the "expert". I feel like my fiancé is the first one, the one that values themselves through their work and tries to measure up to their colleagues and even sometimes his own family. He values his hardworking grandparents a lot, but rarely ever recognizes that he's not going to be just like them in every single way, that he's overworking himself and setting waaaay too high of expectations for himself. I truly believe he needs times of rest, but he believes that rest is a waste of time when he could be doing something productive. Lately he's been projecting this behavior on others around him and it's starting to drive away his friends. I'm going to show this to him and hopefully it might help him in some way. Thank you for creating such awesome and raw content, for sticking to your boundaries, and not letting the whole influencer "influence" for lack of a better word, get in the way of being yourself and sticking up for your own boundaries and limits. :)
Staying silent when you have something to say is another way of lying! I absolutely love your decision to go more into your comfort zone as you continue to spread awareness for things you are passionate about.
i understand what you’re trying to say here but i think the first part could make someone you’re saying this to feel guilty for not sharing. she didn’t have to share how she’s feeling or what she’s been going through, she chose to do this. if she decided to stay silent and keep things private, that would be fine too.
@@fullsundotgov The truth can save the world and it does not care about feelings. Honestly. The truth will often hurt people who are not ready for it, that doesn't make it any less valuable. Have you heard of or read the Gulag Archipelago? Even when we have every excuse to be a victim, everyone is in some way, it's still necessary to look at ourselves and see the ways we personally could have acted better to avoid the catastrophe. She makes videos about her opinion on many topics and this is because even though it will hurt some feelings, the truth needs to be heard to avoid further failure in the future. Everyone should feel guilty for not doing what they are morally obligated to do, by their own definition.
I’m extremely happy that you’re back, and also I’m glad you pointed out the “influencers” we have these days. I’ve never really been able to relate to other teens my age because keeping up with “perfect” people exhausted me, all of the short videos with no particular meaning behind them made me bored. Everyone who is an “influencer” is always in huge so called scandals caught lying about surgeries or past things they’ve done. I’m so glad that you’re a person that just keeps being themselves, and I’m glad you address your real life problems. I just wanted to say thank you for not being perfect. It reminds me that we’re all human-ish. I hope that from now on you can do the best things for yourself!!!!!! Also I love the animated version of yourself it’s really cool. :)
YOU DO Fit in that "line up" . All the respect to you. You are the one who makes the break through , while I'm watching... and thinking ... how can I be in that line up , and be myself. ❤🔥
I relate to so many parts of this as an insecure neurodivergent woman. I’m so sorry that you are experiencing all of this. I’m so proud of you for giving yourself space to heal and come up with new ways to continue doing what makes you happy. I love that you always consider and respect the various viewpoints of the topics you cover. I will listen to you talk whether or not I can see your face! I’m so grateful that you are a content creator and I am excited to see what this chapter brings 💖
I just want to remind you that the content you make is so useful, needed and well made. You are an incredible person and you mean a lot to all of us, so we will support you in the decisions you make about your channel. Thank you for bringing joy and educating people about so many different and important subjects, I really hope that you’ll feel better sooner than later
Losing Jenna is still such an open wound for me that may never heal😔thank you for saying all of this, I’ve always felt celebrities, influencers and youtubers have been dehumanized and have always been under such a crushing pressure to be perfect. It really opens my eyes to a lot of the feelings I’m sure a lot of people in the public eye feel and I hope this is something more people think about when they tear apart the wrong people or things. Before you even mentioned Jenna I felt this was what she would’ve said if she would’ve gone into depth about her decision to stay gone. Thank you for getting vulnerable, this video is very well done
i’ve missed you salem ! your the reason i love video essays and someday in the future i want to make videos of my own no matter what kind of content you make i’ll always be a fan !!
As someone with ADHD and autism, I completely understand being burnt out all the time I’ve been burnt out for the past six years and nothing helps and it’s just fucking terrible. I look up to you so much and I’m really happy that you’re staying if you ever need to take a break I promise that we will be OK with it and want you to feel better!
I'm not gonna lie, I'm gonna miss your face so much but I am also very happy that you came back bc i really enjoy your content, your thoughts and your personality. If the only difference is that you are gonna be a drawing instead of your actual appearence I'm good with it as long as you feel more comfortable :) Don't worry, take your time, we all still love you queen 👑
Honestly anything you choose to share online for free is a gift. I won’t judge you for how you share your gifts with us, we appreciate you for your thoughts and opinions, not just your (beautiful) face
This is so dang relatable 🥺 please know you're not alone, and I really respect your decision to move forward this way, I think it's a huge and amazing thing. You are a wonderful faerie, so full of magic, and it doesn't matter if we can't see your face, your vibe transcends time and space.
Awwweee Penny making me emotional too. Thank you for being so vulnerable and open about these issues. The world would be better if there were more people like you. OLD SCHOOL CONTENT CREATORS HAVE MY HEART.
You are so genuine and so strong to be able to say all of these things. Know that you are being the good in the world, and that by spreading awareness to things like this you are doing so, so much good for people. We love you Salem, thank you for all the content you have made, and keep doing whatever you'd like and that you're comfortable with! This video is amazing, you did such a good job
Remember that there are and always will be people who don't fit in with the general audience. In the name of these people let me say that we appreciate who you are and what you do, and we're just happy you're back, no grudges held
I can't speak for everyone, but I want to say I never cared about long breaks, and I also don't care about you showing your face or not. I'm just happy to watch your videos whenever you post, and I am glad you are looking after yourself. That's all.
also to add on to not caring about long breaks, tbh, some creators i follow post so often that i LITERALLY cannot keep up. i cannot watch every video if someone posts every day bc i'd have to watch them every day. even every other day it just piles up too much. i definitely am a more consistent viewer when there is a longer break between videos bc it means i can catch every single one, even if its not within the first few hours of it posting i will usually see it with a day or two. i get tired of the same person posting every day/every other day and end up taking my own break by watching someone else for a while. but with creators with longer breaks between videos i rarely take a break from them on my own bc by the time the next video drops im ready for it again! aka i agree, i don't mind long breaks at all it just makes me more happy when a video does get posted!
can't imagine anyone minding the change, I mean if you were a vlogger I would get it, it would be bizarre to not show oneself - but as a commentary channel, it's cool :) keep up the good work!! :)
I have burnout as a viewer too. I deleted tiktok for my own sanity. But I get bored with so many of the youtube channels I used to enjoy, and the algorithm isn’t recommending me anything I really want to watch. It’s a cycle of wanting some easy brain stimulation but not watching anything I really enjoy. I end up feeling frustrated that I even bothered watching anything. Little by little, the selective channels that I watch have posted less and less or gone dark entirely. Just as much as creators are burnt out trying to make the content, the viewers are burnt out by content that is ingenuous. It’s refreshing to hear your honesty. Also, you have such a soothing voice and I love your avatar.
This is really sweet and i really hope that you’ll feel better from now on!! We will support your decisions no matter what We’re all vulnerable, we can’t help it literally nobody it perfect. We can’t be. It wouldn’t make us human anymore. Just one note- i started to feel dizzy and dissociated a bit because of the stars moving in a circle ofc this doesn’t mean you need to change anything just because i cant look at it. Ill just treat it like podcasts
I've only discovered you recently (past year abouts) but I can safely say that you're one of my favorite creators! I love that you're very honest about your struggles with mental illness and staying in social media... I can only empathize cause I won't put myself out there but I understand where you're coming from and the struggle of remaining in the public eye and all its scrutiny. I love your content and I love when you bring your sister with you. I just hope you feel safe in your decisions!! :)
Here's my thought. When I saw the notification pop up, all I felt was excitement because I love your content and you as a creator. Whether you show your face or not, you still deliver relevant topics with your own perspective and I appreciate that. Whether you decide to go into detail or not, I'm glad that you decided to keep creating. Love you, Salem!❤️
Totally understandable switch, Salem! Especially with the way your channel is taking off. Your new elf character is simply adorable -- I love the art so much 😍 Happy to hear from you
I’m super happy you’re taking back your autonomy and allowing yourself the space to recenter yourself and your channel. Very proud and looking forward to what your channel has to bring 😋
I'm so happy that you're showing us this all. You are one of the few people on internet that really feels like a human being. Thank you for that. That's what always makes me come back to your channel. This new form of video is still unique because you do it will always have the touch of Salem Tovar. Do what makes you happy, have a nice day! 🖤
Things have been like this for a while. Todays bigger audience is still very much materialistic… nothing new there. I just hope that more people willing to speak about this barriers and oversights, people can realize the damage behind certain trends. Greta video and cute graphics (:
Honestly I can totally sympathize with the fact that your face is equated with your work. All this baggage around imposter syndrome and what your saying, but also it’s your face! As a woman our looks are constantly scrutinized, and anything we say is filtered through desirability. If we don’t fall into the box of “attractive” everything we say is because we’re bitter. I can’t imagine the pressure you’d feel before turning on the camera, editing and posting. Much love and hope the new style makes you more inspired to create 💖
36:49 penny! been following you since like 2016 ish and you have never looked prettier, just glowing, so much beauty and talent distilled in these sisters 🤩
I don't think I've ever commented on any of your content (I'm more of an introverted lurker lol), but I just want to say I'm glad you'll be continuing to make content in a way that is healthy for you. I'm sure you'll be getting people complaining about not seeing you but try not to let them affect you too much. You don't owe us any deeper of an explanation for why you've made this decision, and viewers should be respectful of that!
This video reminded me of a video SuperEyepatchWolf made recently about the RUclipsr Course Scammers and how much the pressure to keep up your numbers feels like which was honestly really great and empathetic. Keep being you Salem. I'm sorry you even felt like you owed us showing your face. Do what makes you feel comfortable.
Your work, all of it, face or no face, is what brings me back. The thoughtfulness put into every piece, the careful time you take, the willingness to be open and explore other avenues, plus more "physical" aspects like your makeup, your soothing voice, and now your wonderful art, brings me back. Every time. I will continue to be coming back because all of your content and work is what I love. Thank you for continuing to share with us, and do whatever you need for yourself to continue doing whatever you like. I will be here to support it all. Thanks for being truthful with us.
I really really liked this video. In regards to the death of the influencer and the toxicity of social media, there is a video on a really small channel that I absolutely love. I think the video is "5 years off of social media as a Gen Z" by Radically Chill. Anyway she talks about the realization of everyone looking the same and people getting lost in their social media identity and how they has become some people only identity, like there is no more self authenticity for so many online "influencers". And of course about the absurd obsession with filters/photo shop and plastic surgery on Instagram. Anyway her channel is really small but I love that video that she made so I just want to recommend it too!
Even though I am a bit disappointed I won't get to see your awesome makeup anymore, I totally support your decision. I have to say I'm so glad you chose to keep your voice in your videos!
only 10 minutes in and this is hitting so close to home. I just wanted to state that I absolutely LOVE this new style of editing. it is so captivating and I just want to help you feel more aware of how talented you are. 10/10
I am sooo glad you're back and totally respect your decision on the change up your content. I loved all your video essays and was able to find other content creators who make the same type of content like Khadija Mbowe. I'll miss all the make up looks you did, but understand it's your decision and respect that. Welcome back Salem! 🎉
I don't blame you for not wanting to show your face anymore. Being a woman/femme on the internet is absolutely rough. I dread putting on makeup to film, even though I enjoy filming my videos. But as a woman with acne, I feel like I'll be at a disadvantage if I don't put on a lil foundation. Glad you're back and found a method of making videos that feels ok to you right now.
you speak sense in every project you do, that’s why we watch. if you feel comfortable not showing your face, its okay. we are here for the intelligence you pump into our brains. we completely respect your decision 😊
hi salem! i just wanna give u a hug ♥ i totally understand whatever you're wanting to do and no one else can tell you what is right for you, only you know! wishing you well and just want to let you know you're awesome! ♥
Dude, you and your sister need to understand that people ADORE you because you are, and actually feel like, real people. I know that the concept of parasocial relationships exists, but trust me when I say that you guys are someone we want to hear from, and seeing a new notif from both of you feels just like being able to finally talk to a friend after a long stressful day at work. 🙏🏻 i am so grateful for being your follower, and I'm sure you both mean a lot to people who experience loneliness 25/7 like i do and just want to listen to actual genuine people talk. Please keep being exactly who you are 💜
Salem, I will still watch every video even if you talk over birdhouse building tutorials. I subscribed because of you as a whole. Your thought processes and views on things are very refreshing, well said and thought provoking. We support you no matter what! ❤️
Thanks for your message! I’m hopeful that you realize, no content creator can ever satisfy everyone, ever, in life or on the internet, so YES 🙌🏼 to moving away from that impossible goal and moving toward your genuine self in terms of content! 💜 Heads up, though: “Two things can be true at once” is not a paradox, it’s reality, because MANY things can be true at once. Gen Z, and society at large, needs to move out of black & white thinking. Life is in the gray area, and in understanding the extremes without letting them lead the way, and I’m glad you’re living in that middle area, able to see in both directions. As a fellow anxious thinker, I can relate to the catastrophizing. I hope you will apply this “gray area” logic to your painful inner monologue, and to help decrease that catastrophic thinking! That thinking only exists in the extremes, so I talk back to that voice (which is the over-protective ego), thank it for trying to protect me, and tell it that I will do what I think is best. Sending you support and love! Love Penny, too, great to see her clips! 🤍
Thank you for talking about this! Whatever you need to do to feel safe and comfortable. I definitely feel like youtube has been getting very borring and samey-same. I've actually noticed that the people I follow that don't bake chocolate cake are getting attacked more, even though they've always had the same personality, and it's definitely concerning
I admire your ability to be vulnerable. You’re valid and I bet a huge amount of your subs feel the same way. Also, I look up to you for your awesome elf ears and how I really want to get into that and actually use the makeup I swear I need when I’m manic but never use because ✨depressive episodes✨.
As a 1996 baby, I relate to a lot of what your sister said. Much love and support to you, I will watch no matter what you post. Whenever you’re ready, whatever you want to post, you have lots of peoples support and I hope you see that ❤️
I watch other channels where people never show their face; it doesn't bother me. I've always loved what you have to SAY, I love your take on things. I've always enjoyed your amazing makeup, elf themed or otherwise, but it's definitely not why I come here🥰
Honestly this new format is cool af. I really love the use of the lil character/avatar. I think it depersonalizes being a content creator in a safe way and it’s fun. Idk I’m really into it lol.
As a millennial, I think a lot of it is life experience because I feel like the creators my age seem to be able to be more authentic and genuine. They either just don’t care what people think or they’re more resilient to trolling. I know a lot of them just don’t read their comments. It sucks that guy guys are going through this and that it’s happening to so many. People need to be more compassionate and recognise everyone is just human. Platforms need to take more steps to protect creators from trolling. You are allowed to make whatever content you want to make ❤️ keep being you. Thank you for your authenticity.
You do you boo boo! Im not that into makeup, I love your makeup looks, but it's your voice I love the most. Listening to you is soothing and I love your humor and realness.
it's lovely to see your drawings, they're so good. i'd also happily listen to a podcast if you prefer just sharing your voice, whether it was just you or you and penny, you'd kill it, you have so many options and are so talented. do what u want loveen :)
THE NEW AVATAR LOOKS SO NICE AND I WAS MOSTLY LISTENING BEFORE ANYWAYS I THINK YOU HAVE THE PERFECT MIX OF GRAPHICS AND AUDIO AND I CARRY MY PHONE AROUND MY APARTMENT WHILE CLEANING OR SMTH LISTENING TO YOU AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK!!
I have so much to say, but first: Thank you so much for being the amazing RUclipsr you are! You are my favorite RUclipsr because you stand out for yourself and always bring up to the table important discussions with strongly based opnions that didn't even came up to my mind. I'm grateful because you made me discover so many different points of view that still develop my mind and entertains my daily life. Still, you shown me why I've always been so afraid of cameras, social media and making videos. I've been always afraid that people judge that I'm simply not good enough and that I might be cancelled and cause my career suicide due to a rookie mistake. It's great to know that I am not alone and that my someone else understands my fears. Last of all, it's okay not to be okay, everyone is different and go through their personal battles, traumas, difficulties and mental health issues. You are not alone, no matter what they said or what you might believe you are one of the best if not the best influencer I've ever met, as a fan I'll stay by your side regardless if you do show your face or not. Take all the time you need.
Your happiness and mental health is most important, and I am just so happy we can continue to hear your thoughts. We love your videos whether or not you show your face.
I wanted to stop and acknowledge how wonderful all of your content is as someone who quietly watches and has never left a comment. I completely understand why you would take such a shift with your content, and I value you striking a balance to essentially protect your well-being. In this video you brought up how genuineness online is disappearing. I have been thinking about this often myself. It’s hard to use any platform of media knowing the audience is SO INCREDIBLY critical. For example, how you brought up if any gen z person had their private group chat leaked they would be canceled. I think there needs to be a real shift online to acknowledging how existing online is it’s own form of reality, and what people say and do matters. In the sense that, when we see someone make a mistake we acknowledge that we all make mistakes. I think we just need more compassion towards others, so we can expect that for ourselves when we inevitably also make mistakes. Creators should be held accountable but constant criticism that is simply nitpicking is pushing authenticity off of platforms that were went to feature REAL people. And REAL people, make mistakes! If we all approached the internet with more respect I think we’d create more space in our own lives for people to show up as their authentic selves, and people are messy. There is beauty, and real value in mistakes because there is an opportunity for growth. But, when we attack someone’s character for mistakes we ourselves have made we don’t leave space for people to express their humanity. We box people in. We make them small, and then we ask ourselves why we never see them again. I don’t want to see genuineness disappear, so I try my best to be understanding of others and I hope more people do too.
salem, chill girl, i don't have to see your (beautiful) face in order to appreciate your mind, i love the way you think and the subjects you choose to discuss so i'm sticking around with or without your face
French autistic twink here and I just want to thank you for the peacefullness and the revelance of your videos. This one in particular hits me cause as a freelance photographer and graphic designer I can relate a loooot. Expectations from people online toward creators have just reached an absurd point where you have to give birth to a masterpiece at an infernal production rate. Or just disappear. Thank you again and force on you
Hey everyone,
I've been gone for two months, self reflecting, recovering emotionally & making some tough decisions in my life. I know this is a big change for everyone and it may make a few of you upset. But I hope to have your support through this change. This change is not forever, nor temporary, it is until I feel safe, comfortable and ready to show my face online once again. Thank you to everyone for supporting me throughout all of this.
Please go give Penny & Itz Keisha some love!

Your voice sounds kinda like Billie Eilish
You have my support! it's completely okay to focus on yourself for a bit, I understand
It’s not that big of a change, I mostly just listen to the soothing sounds of your voice lol
"Complaining about stuff online isn't the same as activism and it's not the same as going outside and doing something about it."
-Salem Tovar, 2022
@@eneyavorodecky maybe that should be the new viral content - curating cool recs of RUclips channels
I'm so happy you're speaking about this. Im not drawn to influencers as much as before. My attention towards them is really limited to commentary channels. Happy you're back and I respect your decision to not show your face,

Same. I don't engage with youtube videos as much as I used to 3 or so years back. But I still like to check some out if it peeks my interest

"Forced diversity wouldn't be a thing if people were more open minded in the first place"
And that's that on that, bestie!!
Non-diversity is forced. That is it.
Ok?
I fully respect your choice to no longer show your face, and your completely valid for not wanting to directly tell us why either :)))
Agreed, love and respect you so much Salem. Thank you for being authentically you!
i respect her decision too!! i’ll have it either way, just as long as it’s Salem :)
Didn't last long
Authentic, witty, creative and smart!
agreed, it is nice to see someone with more experience making this comment :)
I'm a med student currently and relate quite closely with this and am completely lost. How have you been coping?
Omg i'm an indian med student and highly agree with your imposter syndrome thing. Esp because asian parents can actually say things that might Accentuate that feeling.
Love your comment ❤️
I struggle with that. I ask my fans “why do you follow me or like me?” I don’t look like the IG girls. I’m a nerdy, glasses wearing girl.
@@dragonsstars7734
TLDR: I still struggle with it.
Same here! You are very authentic and have very well thought out videos.
I relate to having impostor syndrome too but i hope u know ur doing great Salem. I love ur new stills, ur art is absolutely adorable and even though ill miss seeing ur beautiful self, the art does a great job representing u!! I'm sending love and strength ur way!!🥺💖
Hiii thumin love your stuff!
Queen Thumin
I am an artist
And i use a lot of video essays as podcasts or just background noise as i make art.

I was born in 1983 and I feel the same.

Beautifully said ❤️
When we judge peoples past actions with our modern perspectives, morals, and standards, and then blame them for not living up to the metrics of the future, we play a stupid-ass game where no one wins.
So... when does accountability take place?
All the best to you, Salem. a good example of someone who uses 2D drawn avatars in the same style during commentary videos is TRO (therightopinion on yt)
Even though I am a gen z, older end but still… you are my favorite type of creator- long videos, thoughtful content, not saying “this is my opinion so it’s right” but just explaining all the sides you can find… and you’re just so relatable and.. the best
I will support you girl you should do what makes you feel comfortable and happy❤️❤️
Comment from a Gen Xer - In my personal experience watching RUclips the fundamental changes seem to be
1: The money used to as a reward AFTER the work had been put in, now the money/fame is the point of content creation (this is why everyone looks like a vanilla cupcake with vanilla icing, it's homogenised for the widest possible audience).
Idk, maybe I just don't watch enough to see it but so far I haven't noticed a lot of facial expression.
there is no permanent state of self, we all constantly evolve
I am so proud of you for committing to being yourself
honestly, this has inspired me
GIRL WE LOVE YOU.
Meee toooo! Not drawing but housework (lame 😂) but I also love longer content like hers.
Literally will watch anything you post. It’s your mind that makes the content so brilliant 🥳
Exactly
Absolutely
These videos should be in podcast format!! I love hearing your voice, face or no face. It’s just so soothing to listen to ❤️
Remember that there are and always will be people who don't fit in with the general audience.
We will support your decisions no matter what
We’re all vulnerable, we can’t help it literally nobody it perfect.
You go, girl! I'll support you whatever choice you make! 💕
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE CANT WAIT TO ENJOY! Hope your doing good!
We still support you no matter what :)
My two favorite RUclipsr together. almost crying, thanks God
you speak sense in every project you do, that’s why we watch. if you feel comfortable not showing your face, its okay. we are here for the intelligence you pump into our brains. we completely respect your decision 😊
hi salem! i just wanna give u a hug ♥ i totally understand whatever you're wanting to do and no one else can tell you what is right for you, only you know! wishing you well and just want to let you know you're awesome!
Please keep being exactly who you are 💜
i cannot explain how much i love your voice
Salem, I will still watch every video even if you talk over birdhouse building tutorials. I subscribed because of you as a whole. Your thought processes and views on things are very refreshing, well said and thought provoking.
We support you no matter what! ❤️
Thanks for your message! I’m hopeful that you realize, no content creator can ever satisfy everyone, ever, in life or on the internet, so YES 🙌🏼 to moving away from that impossible goal and moving toward your genuine self in terms of content! 💜
Heads up, though: “Two things can be true at once” is not a paradox, it’s reality, because MANY things can be true at once.
I feel that so much.
I love this compromise. Im so happy you decided to stay. Keep it up!
I've always enjoyed your amazing makeup, elf themed or otherwise, but it's definitely not why I come here🥰
literally screamed when i saw you had a video up omggg.
Honestly this new format is cool af. I really love the use of the lil character/avatar. I think it depersonalizes being a content creator in a safe way and it’s fun. Idk I’m really into it lol.
There's so much that you said that resonates with me I'm overwhelmed trying to think of what to say. You're voice is very soothing.
Wow she's not just skilled at editing and talking, but drawing too! So glad you're back Salem. Take care
I have so much to say, but first:
Thank you so much for being the amazing RUclipsr you are!
Thank you again and force on you
Hope you find a way to express yourself that brings you happiness sweet Salem, thank you for staying ❤️
