That clip of Kim Kardashian saying that she looks the way she does because she wakes up every day and puts in the work makes me irrationally angry. Something my dad said when I was younger has always stuck with me. I was picking on myself for being short and having a weirdly proportioned waist, and he said to me, "Your legs are long enough to reach the ground, right? Your body holds your organs in correctly? Then they're perfect for you." That should be the standard people hold themselves to. We should value our bodies being functional and doing what's necessary, rather than valuing a butt so much we risk dying doing surgery to get it. The butt is not functional and it's not necessary. And in 2021 we should not be reducing a whole person to their butt, we should be seeing them as a person.

And I don't even think that he lied to you just to make you feel better. It's very true that most people are born with the most perfect balance for their bodies to function properly. However imo it doesn't stop at how the body functions. It actually extends to aesthetics as well. Most people already have their own balance that if they try to "fix" something, they can easily mess up that balance and end up looking worse than before or wanting more plastic surgery to restore that balance. So if it's not broken, don't fix it. Most of the time it's not worth going under the knife just to mess up that balance.

I just view this as the beauty arms race. Marketing is so heavily towards making someone attractive and it works especially well with woman. You have seen it trying to pop up in males spaces but have never really gotten much traction as most guys have a default look that makes them easily identified. It should be hell trying to compare with photoshop and surgery at such a young age. At the very least with guys we can say if we just go to the gym we can get those nice bodies and or cheat by steroids.

There was something beautiful about the preteen era. I wasn't afraid to be weird or express myself in unconventional ways. I had no sense of fashion but didn't care. I was a huge nerd and was in ten different fandoms. Looking back now, that era defined what kind of adult I turned into. The whole point of being a preteen for me was self discovery. Nowadays, people in the preteen age want to skip this crucial area by placing themself in this box created by beauty standards. It's like stunting your growth, not physically but mentally.

The trend of pre-teens/early teens "disappearing" is SO TRUE. I remember me and my friends looked like oily lil dumplings when we were 11-15, yet now I see students this age range wearing a full face of makeup everyday both in real life and social media.
I'm not saying this is inherently bad, I would have done that if it was allowed back then. I'm just worried that girls aren't even allowed to be kids anymore. The moment they start bleeding they have to look tiktok ready. Their "glowup" is not makeup and clothes anymore, but glutathione drips and full body laser treatments. Is plastic surgery going to be the necessary next step? Scary.

Body acceptance is also accepting and understanding that people have free will and the right to do what they want to their bodies, without judgment or, the expectation of needing an explanation of the reasons behind their actions.
I think that people need to sit their kids down and explain how much work goes into a photo that is meant for marketing. The fact is, beauty standards are all about the riches.
In eastern asia, the beauty standard was to be pale and small, to look fragile, why? Because only the royals(back then) and the rich have the privilege to just laze around under the shade, not working out in the field under the sun, thus not developing darker skin(tan) and more muscle.
In some poorer countries, being plump is a beauty standard cause it means ur rich enough to eat more and not starve yourself.
A couple years ago, being skinny and tan was considered pretty in the western, because only the rich have the privilege to go to the tropicals and tan under the sun. And since food is already taken for granted for most people in the developed countries, being thin by eating healthier, eating less, working out, is a privilege for those who can afford the time and money.
Today, the unnatural beauty standard is something only the rich and the privileged can afford. The normal working class wouldn’t have the money to go get a surgery or the time to do both the surgery and the recovery time needed to heal.
Long story short, these beauty standards are set by rich people because they want to be different. You dont have to look like them. As long as you’re healthy, I think that’s enough. Why bother going to such length for a trend that will eventually shift? Living is already hard, dont make it even harder for yourself.

I understand and agree that body positivity has been helpful to push back against the stigma of female beauty standards; I just find it interesting how, when we start to delve more into the psychology of the issue of increasing obesity rates, there's a consensus that 'indifference' is the ultimate goal to escape societal standards and attain true healthiness, whether it be regarding physical appearance or our social selves.

Something that I find important to mention about the Victorian era of fashion: yes the thin waist was the fashionable figure, but very few women actually tight-laced their corset at the time. The silouhette was created with an optical illusion: with a well fitted corset and an ample skirt, the waist appears thinner without needing to actually reduce its circumference to the point that it became painfull, or even harmfull for the health.
At the time, the beauty standards were a lot more achievable by a wide variety of women because those standards were in the clothes, not in the body type.

The idea of barely being an adult or even still being a teen and literally modifying your body for a trend that will go away in less than a decade is asinine to me. For many, it doesn’t lessen the insecurity. I’m small for a 14 year old (5’2 with almost no curves). My spine curves more than my body because of scoliosis lol. It almost feels like not being content with my body is an expectation. I’d rather work out and bring the body I was born with to its full potential than to risk my health for an insecurity. I don’t wanna be sexy. I don’t even want to be attractive. I just wanna be ME.

Edit: I said that they "were" because now we obviously have better methods to cure vertebral column diseases (and I EDIT again because I just noticed that I called "vertebral column problems" the problems caused by having big breasts, I'm sorry for this error I'm not this fluent in English and I don't know medical therms etc) and pls don't wear corsets tight-laced or everyday

@@cronekat4876 physical therapist assistant here - no, corsets are absolutely not good for the body and do not help with posture in the long run. By forcing "good" posture, they make it so that a person doesn't have to use their postural muscles to hold themselves up, which can cause atrophy/extreme weakness which will actually make their posture much worse. They may be useful for people with conditions that cause abdominal/postural weakness, but even in that case, a brace is a much better option.
Corsets (edit: I specifically mean older-style corsets, not properly fitting modern ones) may also impair breathing ability which can cause long-term damage (it's theorized that this may have contributed to women fainting easily back when items like corsets were popular wear). And if they're too tight, they can literally compress your internal organs and alter the shape of your ribs (which - again - impairs your ability to breathe). They definitely should not be brought back.

    Yeah. I dress childish. I'm a child.
All of the girls around me want to look more than their age, and because of that I feel like I'm dressing up like a crybaby when really, it's just what I am as a 13 years old.

As someone who's old enough to remember the 90s, and seeing a lot of 90s and early 2000s trends coming back around again - I seriously worry for the inevitable moment in which this ideal shape begins to shrink again and all these girls seriously regret these extreme surgeries.
And when it comes to history, the fashionable "shape" had far more to do with the shape of your clothing than the body beneath it. Corsets were not commonly tight-laced up until the late 1800s, but padded in certain areas and then tighter in others to create a dress silhouette. And even when tighter corsets did come in, they ONLY tightened at the waist, while everything else was quite loose or padded to create a sort of curvature. Now your actual body is expected to change versus your clothes.

It was extremely rare for somebody to tight-lace their corset. Even when it became more common to rely a little more on the reduction caused by the corset, it wouldn't be tight-laced to a dangerous extent. As you said, They mainly relied on padding in other areas, alongside larger skirts and sleeves, to create an illusion of whatever the fashionable silhouette was at the time.

It is the worst to see young women believe they are not good enough just because their bra sizes aren’t bigger than a B cup. We see women especially suffer from eating disorders all because of people’s opinions on how they look, how they should eat, and how much they should weigh.
Be happy with who you are becoming and live in the moment. When you’re 70 you’ll look back on all those times and question why you ever payed attention to those who judged you. @@nyumyu4265 I really don’t think they are. If I were to treat my body like an object, so much to the point where I am willing to literally get cut open and have all types of silicone and whatever else put into my body for the sake of wanting to sexually appeal to men (because let’s face it, that’s the real reason for doing such drastic things to follow trends. Women aren’t truly getting BBLs and all sorts for the sake of themselves or what other women think are they?) then I’d be altering my physical body according to men’s beauty standards and their expectations of women. I can’t really scream about how men shouldn’t objectify women but then objectify my own body as if it’s play dough that I should just be able to mould to each and every trend.
It’s internalised misogyny in a way, and it’s manifesting in women’s actions in such a drastic way to the point where a lot of women are willing to die under the knife for the sake of it, or risk mutilating their bodies. Men’s objectification of our bodies is linked with everything to do with how we objectify ourselves.

"The worst beauty trend was when the corset was forced inside the body rather than out"
I will say one important thing, as a historical fashion enthusiast who stumbled upon this video, historical clothing that included corsets and stays inherently had an advantage over modern standards of beauty:
If your body didn't meet the expected ideal, you could use your clothes to fake it
Pad out the wider parts and you still get to keep your corset comfortable (tight lacing was a very small practise, usually only done by 18-24 year old elite women who didn't have much else to do). The waist sizes were then exactly as they are today, with similar population spreads, but more people could achieve the silhouette desired because you could use your clothes to make up the difference
But, as we became more industrialised, lost respect for the clothing we wore, and started paring down our layers to barely 2, you couldn't use your clothes to make up for the silhouette anymore. So the corset moved inside the body...
    And that's the saddest thing

Hunni boys at that age don’t respect you, why not wait until you find someone you feel comfortable with and can trust (which tends to be at an older age anyway bc middle school and high school boys are h*rny little sh*ts). The reason I bring that up is bc boys talk. I remember a boy in high school I made out with (nothing more) started telling other guys my body “wasn’t all that they think it is”. Knowing what boys are like at that age and seeing girls potentially putting themselves in situations for those kinds of experiences is heartbreaking.
