25:04 in my experience that's true, in fact I have the opposite problem with my new laptop that I just bought... it seems like laptop manufacturers now don't put any limit on how fast the fans spin, they are spinning at max too often, which causes mechanical problems since the parts are not capable of operating at max speed for long periods of time like that... because of this my fan will die prematurely and the laptop rendered unusable, when a simple RPM limit would fix everything... planned obsolescence at play again...
one of the sensors has abnormal reading, hence why the fan is high. usually, when you have a failed sensor then the CPU usage will be slightly higher in task manager. look like a damaged resistor shown at 10:03 just below the large cap

I that case i cut the red wire, and solder 2 diodes in serial. Each have about 0.7V drop, so with 2 the voltage is dripping to 3.6V and the speed of the fan is good. But i use regular ones and just isolate them :) And also, not all the diodes have that voltage drop.
I just got my Dell E6530 replacement fan working with some inspiration from you. Original fan was working but noisy and vibrated the laptop. I bought a replacement fan, didn't work, company replaced it and the 2nd didn't work either. Put the replacement fan on the bench to see how I could get it to spin and found if I shorted the red and blue together it would spin. Tried that in the laptop and it now runs. Not sure what that means but it's working. Can anyone explain the logic behind my fix? I think the replacement fan wasn't the same even though it looked nearly identical. Thanks for the great videos! So many great tips.

Nice job but: What if CPU needs more air flow and get overheated then shut down? I think that the PWM (Pulse Wide Modulation) signal is suffering a distorted filtering due to a shorted capacitor : in this case only "high duty ratio" pulses are allowed to pass across the remaining working capacitors which means full RPM 100% of the time...

im just wonder...if one of the temperature sensor is shoted, can be NTC thermothing that means vith a higher temperature decreases the resistivity and the controller chip means it is too hot and starting cool down with the fan. but when the termistor is shorted the controller can not receive a good 'temperature(resistivity)' sensing that will be react on wrong inputs, it can be the issue with fast spinning fan. in the board is written PTC43**, easily can be chechked when we are putting some heat to area. and i think these termistors are pulled up and that why we dont see a big current. wellcome from Hungary! you have nice videos

Hi.Can You tell in few words what can cause - fan working normally and stopped working after dissasembly.Checked all sables,plugs etc... Laptop switch off itself after start (1-2s) without fan spinning.I know fan is ok as it started to work again after it was not working...and now not working again.

Wjy cant you just use a lower rating resistor,I mean it sure can get heated up,but not that much to explode or melt...It would drop the rpm by maybe 10-15%,why use diodes?I know that in other direction the diode gives higher resistance than in other direction..but yet...
One time I had opened my laptop to fix the noisy fan. I took out the fan cleaned it and it was ok but when I started the laptop it showed me an error msg like fan error and the fan was spinning at max. RPM. Opened the laptop again and figured out that connection was not right. Adjusted the connector and it worked fine
why not find a low volt rail and line it from there with a bridge wire thats wot i would do :) but the slow switching diode in series is still a nice fix bro .. i love ur videos
i guess it's far harder to find 3 equal resistors on a spare board than 3 equal diodes. And in case of resistors you have to check what wattage they can handle and what voltage drop results in them. It's far easier and time saving using diodes.

Dodgy indeed! Remind me not to buy my used laptops at your shop! ;-) What happens when the graphics chip is taxed so much that it really NEEDS the extra cooling from the fan on high? It gets too hot and eventually dies quicker than necessary. And that's fine if it's your own machine and you plan to replace it sooner or later...
what will happen when the lucky customer who buys this laptop will, for example, play some demanding games ? guessing some thermal shutdown due to the fan deliverately stuck at low speed which leads to insufficient cooling …
that's exactly what I just wrote... what he says is true, that's not as much as a big problem as it seems... coupled with some underclocking and undervolting you can play games just fine, in fact not any loss in performance for 10 to 15 Celsius temperatures lower than before, at no performance cost... pretty great... besides that, these CPU's have to tools to adapt if needed
as someone who ran an older laptop that didn't have a cooling fan for 4 years and that just bought a new one (having more issues with the newer one than the older one...) Trust me, my experience says everything is okay in this case.... Matter of fact, I would say these measures he implemented will INCREASE the lifespan of the cooling fan, it will work for a much longer time spinning a bit slower
this is embarrassing to the repair community.. I mean it might work, but not to spec. Were it an atom processor, fine, those even work with a coin on top as heat sink, but this has a dedicated video card! Not to mention no heat shrink or other type o isolation of the leads on the diodes... I usually love your work, but this... no words...
Not doggy at all, I'm still a beginner and I never fix a laptop. When CPU gets too hot, obviously the fan must run at a high speed which will require 5v.
the fan doesn't cool the processor in a direct way, it cools down the heatsink by airflowing the laptop. That fan is not on top of that processor or do i miss something?..
I have own medium range laptops (like this one) and they never go full spinning unless the thermal paste is completely gone. Nice job Sorin !
Blue wire on the fan is PWM and when PWM not present the fan will spin at full speed, so actually PWM line is missing on the fan connector.....

At 11:20, follow the trace of the pwm contact. Looks like there's some ripped pads. Maybe a knocked off smd resistor.

Why didnt you use a resistor? I heard you said that you shouldnt but why? and would an inductor work as well for this kind of thing?
There was a battery lock trigger at the left ( red dot ) , that's why battery couldn't get out easy.

no just don't squeez the pliers that strong and it wont cut the actual wires
Have you checked the thermal paste from gpu ? The fan is spinning so fast because the gpu is sending the information of overheating.

this is a "proper dodgy" fan repair :)) don't you have some heatshrink? I see that it works, but ... :)

Sorin: The original SMD diodes are Schottky diodes. The latest 4 diodes are Silicon diodes.
