    Can I use this foil instead of the preformed foam rafter vents then add the rafter insulation?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад +1

      Definitely! And it works great. You can run the lowest piece horizontal across the bottom and tuck back over the top plat of your wall to create a "pocket" for some insulation to sit on the top plate. This piece will typically go 2-3 ft up the slope of the roof. Then leave a few inch gap before you start with your next piece. This gap will allow air to enter the attic if needed. Look at this page: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/staple-up-installation/ and look for the section - Want to Add More Insulation Later? You will see the skirt and slit method there.

      Same here. On a really hot day, my attic is 120 degrees. The 16 inches of blown-in insulation just under my attic foil (from this source) is 105 degrees. That is how well it radiates the heat away. That's 15 degrees less heat leaking into my house.

      @@Inkling777 Thanks for the feedback! On a hot-sunny day many people totally undervalue the benefits of a radiant barrier. Once they see and feel the difference they are believers.

    How does the foil compare to reflectix bubble foil? I'm in Houston and looking to install on the bottom side of my rafters in my detached garage.

      @AtticFoil  3 года назад +1

      Take a look at this page: atticfoil.com/index.php/knowledge-zone/knowledge-zone-attic-foil-vs-other-products/ Bubble foil in a vented attic will not do any better than www.AtticFoil.com and it's more expensive. Bubble foil type products are more for metal buildings where condensation on the metal can be an issue.

    Attic install scenario: Vented attic, ducting on floor with insulation, 2x6" joisting, wood ceiling (not sure what it is called) with no insulation, so, can I put foil over the entire floor before I put plywood on top? I also want to foil the ceiling.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад +1

      You cannot install foil directly over the insulation and then directly lay down plywood. You MUST have an airspace on one side of the foil for it to BE a radiant barrier. If you are putting down plywood, then I'd just staple it up. Pretty basic standard attic install here: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/staple-up-installation/

    Hi Sr. I'm very interested on the product my house has a big issue on keep cold temperature on the summer here on Houston Tx.
    Now have a question after installing your barrier staple method I also want to replaced or add more insulation on the bottom... on your opinion which is better take the existing out and replaced or just blow more insulation on top of the old one ... my house is 17 years old
    Thanks on advance

      Unless your old insulation is infested with vermin/droppings etc. then it is still good even if it's a little dirty. Just install www.AtticFoil.com FIRST and then seal any holes/penetrations in your ceiling and then install more insulation.

    I don’t have a ridge vent but I do have a gable end vent. Should I install this from the top to bottom of the attic ceiling? Or leave a gap at the top? Also is this better than using r8 bubble wrap? Thanks

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад +1

      No, ridge vents alone will work great when combined with soffit vents. Always leave gaps at top an bottom. You WANT air to flow freely through your attic. Bubble foil has NO advantage compared to www.AtticFoil.com In fact, you will spend more money for no additional benefit. You want foil stapled up first, and more insulation on the FLOOR of the attic.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад

      @@pureforce469 Sorry, I missread your question. YES, it does not matter where the "hole" is in the top of the attic. Just leave a couple inch gap at the top near the ridge and cut holes in the foil if you cover the gable vents. The hot air will "find" it's way out. Like water heading downhill. Just install the foil so the air never hits a "dead end". This page and videos will help: atticfoil.com/index.php/installation/staple-up-installation/

    I just bought a house, and the old owner installed foam on a small attic section separate from the big attic. The problem is that section it's on top of the garage, and I think the problem is that all the heat that enters thru the garage, those vapors rise to that small attic that now it's completely sealed because of the foam at the roof. So that heats travels to my closes room the closest and my master room. Any ideas?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  3 года назад

      Not sure why someone would foam only part of the attic. You should either go fully sealed or vented.

    Hi, I'm living in a new build, semi-detached house. in my attic there are grey construction bricks on sides, rafters on top. I have put the foil underneath the rafters, left an air gap on top and bottom. What I understand is I need to cover also both grey brick walls, or the foil underneath the rafters is enough? Thanks

    What about moisture being caught between the radiant barrier and the ceiling?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад +1

      The space between the foil and the roof deck is ventilated - gaps at the top and bottom, so no issue there. And if you lay out over the insulation, AtticFoil has microperforations, so it is NOT a vapor barrier to trap/stop moisture. Does this help?

    Just ordered 1500 sq ft for my house. I've got Whirlybirds at the top of my roof but I have exposed rafter tails with no venting. Do you think this will be problematic?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад

      First, thanks for the order Preston! It should not be a problem. Just leave gaps at the top and bottom of all rafters like in the install videos. However, If at all possible, I'd try to find a way to get some "holes" in the bottom of the attic for air to get in. Maybe a porch you can cut a vent into? Does the attic access open into the attic? Leave the door open and keep the garage door cracked and this will get air into the attic too.

    Wouldnt you only want it one way radiant barrier? I want to block the heat radiation from my roof, I don't necessarily block the heat that would be trapped in the attic, back at the attic, right?

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  3 года назад +1

      There is really no such thing as "Trapping" heat. Heat always moves from hot to cold. So, any heat in your attic is trying to move to the cooler interior of the home, not back out the roof.

    Here is my situation. When we purchased our home 12 years ago, which was built in 1940, the attic did not have gable, ridge or soffits vents (no soffits since my roof has no overhangs), but it does have a window at each end. My roof has slate tiles and my entire attic is insulated (floor, rafters and gable walls.). Not sure of the reasoning behind the batt insulation in the rafters since it was never a living space. As you can imagine, my attic gets really hot in the summertime. Opening both windows helps a bit but not much. Would removing the batt insulation from the rafters and doing nothing else help some of the hot air escape through the roof, and/or would installing this foil insulation instead (after removing the batt insulation from rafters) be better in the rafters? I could install a fan at one end of the attic and run it while the other window is cracked open, but that would require running electrical in the attic.

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  3 года назад

      You would be best to remove insulation between rafters and ONLY use www.AtticFoil.com radiant barrier. The attic is a "non-conditioned" space, but they basically built a refrigerator with holes on each end. You would be better to stop much of the radiant heat from getting in. I think you will be surprised how much cooler the attic is after installing a radiant barrier. Remember, the attic will usually never be cooler than ambient (outside) temperature. I would only consider an fan IF the attic is still 20+ degrees hotter than outside after installing www.AtticFoil.com

      I am a total believer in attic foil; I had it installed on my last house (10 yr old with soffit vents and fixed roof vents). The foil made a huge difference. Now I am 90% done installing on our new house and it doesn't seem to be making that much of a difference. This house is 68 years old block construction, with gable vents, and 2 fixed roof vents and a 3 year old shingle roof. There are no soffit vents. Should I cut holes to allow airflow at the top cap/over hang to allow more airflow in the channels? Great product by the way

    • @AtticFoil
      @AtticFoil  4 года назад +2

      It depends. If you are in a colder climate with an older "leaky" home, more ventilation could help in the winter. Or, if you are in a really hot area having the low "holes" for air to enter will greatly increase the "stack effect" in the attic. Cool air in the bottom, hot air out the top.
