I'm a 71 year old former commercial helicopter pilot. Most of my life has been spent doing what you guys did, but from 500 feet above ground. I married late in life, due to my career, and my oldest child is 25. It is so hard to explain to the younger generation what this magnificent country holds for us. Take out the politics and this place is hard to beat. I have watched your channel from the beginning and this series has, without doubt, been the best you have ever done. Can't wait for the next journey. Thank you, both.

I'm 64 this year and my oldest kid is 26 & one is 25 'cause I too married late in life! We have been married 26 years in Sept. and would be for a lot longer except that my wife has early onset alzheimer's and I have a bad heart now too. It's gonna be a mad dash to the finish line! LoL! This country is amazing I have to agree, and politics just Sux! Peace my friend.

This whole series has summed up Merlin's catch phrase: 'You can worry a thing to death'. Driving a 92 year old vehicle across the majority of the country, is not for the faint hearted. If it breaks: Ya fix it. No problem, no complaints, no cussing. Really, really enjoyed this trek!

In 1956, I was 8 years old. My Dad worked for the VA hospital & we got transferred from Birmingham, AL to Vancouver, WA. My Dad had a 1953 Desoto sedan, which had a PS window mounted swamp cooler (like the one in your model A. My Dad, Mom & I made the trip in a weeks time (AL to CA, then up the coast to WA). The swamp cooler worked great, but we did have to add water every morning. My Dad would start driving ~5am & we'd stop for the day ~2pm (during the heat) & we'd all go for a swim at the motel 6. My Dad also had a canvas water bag hooked on the hood ornament. As we drove, the wind blowing on the damp canvas bag, cooled the water for us to drink, whenever we stopped. I rode in the back seat & my Mom filled in the footwell area, so that it was level with the back seat bottom cushion (no seat belts in those days). PS .... I enjoyed following your cross country adventure in the model A sedan, as well as all your other videos.

This trip has been a vicarious treasure! Fell in love with Desiree what a great trooper. Merlin this was a echo of a trip my grandfather told me about when I was 16. I am sixty now. I asked my grandfather how old he was when he got his driver's license and he started telling me about a trip he took from Wisconsin to Washington state in a model T. He stopped in North Dakota (what he referred to as the ''Dakotas'') to work on a sheep ranch to earn more gas money, moving on to Idaho building a stone door to a root cellar with an over center hinge (so you could open it with your finger) for a couple with no children and the guy was an author who who owned the land they wanted him to stay and become their heir (he was sixteen at the time) he stayed long enough to to make the hinge and teach the guys wife how to properly milk their one cow. (He said the ''poor bitch (cow) almost smiled when I just jerked the milk out of her '') the authors wife had just been squeezing the teat and took forever to milk. He drove backwards up a bunch of mountain passes (he never told me why) until he got to Washington state and worked in a lumber camp and saved more money and then got word that his father was dying and he headed back home to be with family. I was amazed that he did this when he was 16. When I was sixteen I couldn't manage a worm wrestle.

I was out of town for 2.5 weeks; when I returned I watched the whole 'series' (WOW!). You both made it home safely, the vehicle made it also & you had meticulous aid from many (early on) who knew the ins & outs of the vehicle & assisted you. You had many others also that aided & to me this is a 'community that cares' about you & in part, about history & keeping 'it alive". Merlin is the main mechanic 'actor' in the story, I won't discount that, but to share the heart of America (backroads) with your wife - lucky you. Eons ago I drove from the West to D.C. and back (twice) and both times chose (often) to get off the freeways & go along backroads. (But never in a vehicle like the one you had). Again, you connected with so many along the route & most often had a smile - until you got to the big heat, 'ouch'. It really was an eventful series & you featured a number of interesting folk, with added to the diversity of the travel.

Oh the memories. My grandfather was an engineer on that exact steam locomotive back in the 1930s and 1940s. My dad was familiar with the controls of those when he was a kid. He later became an engineer for the Milwaukee Road up until the Milwaukee Road went bankrupt. I have traveled with my dad as a toddler on runs and actually driven "Little Joe". Little Joe is currently on display in Deer Lodge, Montana and I have an exact copy of the controls for my model railroad. Merlin and Desiree that was a fabulous series. That could run on television in prime time and draw a huge audience. I was living through you on the trip but I want to take your advice and "just do it", which I will at some point. I like watching Derrick's "crank and drive home" videos because he does some crazy things. You are an animal... Derrick would never change a rod on the road, you are a man's man. Desiree, I thought you were a professional in cinema but after this series, I see you are a professional fashion model with apropos outfits to match the car's original era. Also, I wanted to mention since you pointed it out that Kerin (sp) does do an excellent job with all your editing and as I mentioned, this one could play on primetime tv with a huge following. The team that you assembled for this effort was all great and made for such a great series. Keep up the excellent video productions.

Air conditioned Model A, what an idea! My dad was a car dealer right after WW2. We had a early 30's Model for a while that someone traded in. As a teen age helper at the motor company I had to start all the used cars when I got there after school. That old Model A started up a lot better than some of the 40's and 50's cars. It wasn't fast though. Seeing that air conditioner made me write this note to you. We took a trip to SoCal in the early 50's in a new 52 Mercury station wagon and my dad hung one of those 'air conditioners' from the passenger side rear window, all it did was spit water droplets on us in the back seat. It was chromed bullet shaped affair, it had a water tank and the wind blew thru it as we drove. Wasn't too many years we could install after market real a/c's in new cars. That was before there were cars with factory air available. Thanks for stirring up old memories.

Hey Merlin when I was a kid my grandfather used a jug of water with a tube ran through the engine compartment and over the radiator and he would hold the jug up high in the car and turn it over and the water would exit from the tube and spread down the radiator making a swamp cooler for the motor.
We drove his from Texas back to GA. In the summer along highway 10 , then up 27 to our home , and that home made swamp cooler was such a help. And it only cost a dollar lol.
It worked out to 1 gallon per state so there are ways to cool the motor, even if it's a red neck way lol. But I really loved this series of videos, great job.

Great trip. Everyone should put this trip on their bucket list. I've done it twice, once in the caboose. I was on the train immediately after the twin towers were destroyed on 9/11. As we waited in the terminal in Durango, the crashes were on the TV news. We spent 2 hours on the train with no idea what was happening in the world. In Silverton the TVs again showed the news about what was happening. It was all very surreal. We were in Silverton a few hours and then two hours on the train back to Durango.

I took the other end of that railroad from Antonio CO to Chama NM. It was the first run of the season and the snow plows had plowed the day before. In some places the snow was as high as the windows and before you know it, we were breaking the rules having snow ball fights inside the car. I have a great photo of the steam loco testing it's brakes before heading off the pass to Chama. All that can be seen of the train is from the windows up. Magnificent ride and snow covered sites.

Thank you Desiree and Merlin for one of the most interesting and fun video series ever. You had a lot of friends helping along the way and that is nice to see. Your daughter does a wonderful job editing and making each episode smooth.

I grew up with C. W. McCall truck’n songs. So, when I became a BillyBigRigger, Wolf Creek Pass made # 1 on my truck’n bucket list. ✅ Up And Down 18 Wheel’n ! Circa 2001.

Thank you both for doing this. It was fantastic to follow along. I am a "road trip" guy and love driving the back roads like that. NOT brave enough to do it in a Model A, but.... I thoroughly enjoyed all of this.

Back in the 50’s we saw cars with the window evaporative coolers when we we on our trips back east from California. We begged our dad to get one. No, you kids just roll down your windows. We carried a 2 gal thermos jug with ice water on the back floorboard. Dad would ask for water and would drink about half of it before flinging the rest into the back seat splashing us kids. That was our a/c.

What a great adventure, thanks for taking us along! Love looking at maps and planning a trip. All of the hardships that you conquer along the way are what make it memorable, Desiree is a great sport for going along. My dad said that his dad would put new babbitt bearings in their car every year around the 4th of July just for preventative maintenance.

When you were in Clay Center, you were just an hour from us… and yes, that set of storms on the 4th was serious. Even by MidWest standards… there’s a reason Dorothy had her adventure from that same neighborhood! Fun trip to follow you guys

I've been watching you guys for over a year, 2 things .. 1. I enjoy all your videos but hands down this was the best. 2. I was really surprised and happy to see Desiree travel with you Merlin, her support for you is obvious or you wouldn't be doing what you do (as comfortably as you do it), however at the beginning of the trip I remember thinking (how long will Desiree travel with you) .. so a shout out to you Desiree for the great support for Merlin and your appearance during the trip. 1a. Thank you Merlin for the channel content, your dedication and expertise. 2a. Thank you Desiree for your dedication to Merlin and the channel. NB. As you both mentioned thank you Daughter for the excellent editing, I realize it's hours and hours of work filming and probably twice that editing .. THANKYOU !! Take care, God Bless and keep smiling MOSG team and viewers.

I saw the train ride and I had to stop and watch I did took my wife and kids on that train back around 1975 we had a great adventure that day. Also when I was six My family moved from Cleveland to Phoenix, we were driving a newer 1954 buick went across the northern states and then down to phoenix and we were using one of those cool old air conditioners many great memories were awakened. 🙂 Thanks

Leah and I can’t agree with you more. You have to slow down and see this beautiful country we live in on the back roads. We have driven our “A” 70,000 miles across USA and Canada. We just finished the western portion of the Lincoln Highway from Minnesota.
it likes we were on the road about the same time you were. It was hot. My wife agrees with Desiree about the heat on the passenger side floor. We discovered if you put about 3 inches of towels on the floor that helps a lot. My wife is a trooper.
On our travels, we have met very generous and helpful people. The back roads are the way travel.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
    We look forward to more!
    God bless you two.
Hope to see you Down a country road

I'm 67, grew up in Phoenix and we hung one of those swampys on the family car, something like a 1960ish Ford station wagon, and yeah it leaked and spit water and work well on low humidity days. Cheers
