  • The tent city of Pinellas Hope, Fla is home to many who never thought they would find themselves homeless, but had nowhere else to go after being unable to find work as the economy crumbled.

I was homeless with a child and I wasn't mentally ill and I'm damn sure NOT a drug addict. Hard times befall all of us and be very careful how you treat people because you will NEVER know when you'll be in that same situation. Peace and many blessings upon us all

My heart goes out to anyone who is homeless. Don't judge a person until you have walked in their shoes. A good friend once told me, "Donna, we are all just one paycheck away from being homeless."

Paying rent at an apartment house or motel is a waste of money all your doing is making the landlords richer so they can waste your hard earned money taking vacations buying cars and clothes...while workers waste their life away at a job the landlord just sit on they fat ass blowing money I rather keep my money buy my own car and live in a tent house...your not homeless if you have a tent and a car it's better than being carless and tentless because some homeless people live under bridges without any of those luxuries.

I never saw this coming for our family. We kept thinking we’d find a way. It really hit us hard. We are full time rvers now in a beautiful 5th wheel and we acquired it after much struggle. If and when we buy a house again I will always have an rv for peace of mind. I can always take off in my tiny home, have adventures, find employment anywhere, and live! My advice to anyone is to not keep thinking that any day the answer is coming. Plan for the worst while you can. A nomadic life is a beautiful life.

This is America. You're good-to-go if you have a job and money. The minute those disappear, you become a nobody - and people shun you. I found out the hard way - going from a job and nice home until the business I worked for was taken over by a corporate raider - whom promptly fired all 1,500 employees made off with $20 million. In Anchorage, Alaska no less and in the dead of winter.
Lived out my car with a child, got harassed by the police and yet never did drugs or drank. It didn't matter. Finally I find a minimum-wage job that got my child and I into an apartment. It was very hard and I'll NEVER forget those who mistreated us while we were down and out. Including the police. Really - America needs to stop spending trillions on war and in countries we have NO business being in and start taking care of our own. Or else - game over man. It's game over for Americans - except the 1% of course.

      It's tough out there.
I know exactly how you feel, I am homeless now myself. Working seven days a week, long shifts, riding my bike 15-20+ miles a day just to get by since my car broke down & can't afford to repair it.
Doing my best to fix this life and the situation I'm in.
Hope you have made even more progress just in the three months since you posted your comment. Wishing you the very best. You're going to make it! Keep it up! 😁💙

My husband and I found ourselves homeless at ages 60 and 50. He lost his job at age 59 in 2008 during the recession and was out of work until 2015. He was making a six figure income the last job he had but he was applying for $10 hour retail jobs, doing handyman work or anything just to bring money in. Our home of 23 years went into foreclosure and we finally left that property in 2012. Luckily my sis stepped in at the last minute and let us couch surf at her place. My husband was now another homeless Vietnam veteran. Nobody thinks this will happen to them (I didn't) but when it does it happens so fast it's mind boggling. If it hasn't happened to you-you just can't know.

My neighbor explained to me that an architectural firm she worked at for 25 years changed her hours to part-time and six months later let her go. She said she wasn't eligible for unemployment benefits, didn't receive her pension (although the IRS thought she did and contacted her about it), and was forced to apply for her Social Security benefits early which meant she got hundreds of dollars less a month.
People should not be quick to judge a person who is homeless.
It can happen to anyone. You can lose your job, your income, your benefits, then your home, your car . . . it is a national crisis that has been going on for decades.
Have you ever wondered why homelessness - even with all of the efforts to help - just keeps getting worse? Not better?

If they live as homeless in downtown of major cities, they stay there because they are seeking something widely available there, like drug sell and criminal means of getting the money for it.

I think they also fear their property values going down. Wouldn't want to see your kids knowing what poverty is like and them asking their parents why they have a nice ass house and not in a camp. Either they get a place to camp, or they simply will be flooding the streets. There may not be a silver bullet to fix this problem, but at least get them in one place where other private organisations can simply oversee it and run it. That way, least likely to use tax dollars on those worried about it and others can choose to help.

There are absolutely No guarantees of prosperity in this life. I know of few people who are not basically living from pay check to pay check. All it takes is a single tragedy, or one false move, loss of a job, etc.... and their entire world can get turned upside down! We Must have compassion and be willing to "assist" those in need! If we don't then who will??!! It's sad to see "love thy neighbor" literally Die in this day and age. :'-(

They so stubbornly cling to their stereotypes about the poor, that even when it happens to a family member, they refuse to admit the truth about poverty. With that said, I also have a comfortable 1900 square foot home, a very nice car, and money in the bank. After seeing this, I cherish every day I can drag my aching back out of bed, go to work, and get a pay check & insurance. Best of luck to the new homeless.

I'm sorry that you feel that way. I'm really no different, other than my gumption to make something better of myself. A lot of the homeless choose to be homeless. I call it lazy. I'm not lazy. With extraordinary back pain, that is debilitating, I force myself out of bed, sometimes 72 hours a week, to go to work and just deal with it.

After awhile they not able to hold down job even with heroin. Then they end up homeless in wheelchair. You are making a big mistake. Quit now while you are ahead. Stop working, sell everything and buy a decent motorhome. Your life already over, you just don't know it. Do not wait until you so sick that only hard drugs will help.

Ignorance leads people to having zero perception skills, no idea of reality, and no ability to have empathy. Our leaders actually promote this in clever ways. They want our strength of huge population to be reduced by divide and conquer tactics. Dumbing down society is proven by over half the population. It's not natural. There's no way people should be this ignorant.

Their lack of effort and life skills doesn't ruffle my security blanket at all. Any blessings that I have in life I earned. People aren't Homeless because they made great decisions and worked 60-80 hours a week since age 15 and saved 10% of their gross income like the non homeless have. Our town has no less than 30 unfilled beds at the Poverelo House on any evening. Of the 4800 police encounters with the Homeless last year only 4 people accepted any help. That's 4 people not 4%. When the Homeless want to make the changes and put in the work they'll join the rest of the civilized world. Until then they are just an annoyance.

Across the Pacific in China, you see super infrastructure and public transport at affordable price. Poverty eradication by the government and wealth generation. As China gets richer, the neighbours benefited including yours truly. The US is wasting good money fighting futile war all over the world, precious funds that could have been spent on her people in terms of affordable housing, healthcare and infrastructure. Property tax is unheard of in my country.

I've been going from job to job and companies want to work you to near death for very little. like 70 hours a week tossing logs into a wood chipper. 10 hours of cleaning cars with no lunch breaks at $8.50 an hour. Then theres these employment services that take all your overtime you make to proove you can be worthy to work for the company after 90 days review. I work my ass off, never late one day and I'm replaced with an excuse. So stressful. These guys living in tents are free, they just don't know it.

At least these people have a area to set up a tent and eat decent meals. Many people are literally in the bushes . This is a step in the right direction! ... Thanks to everyone who is and has helped with such.

I live in Los Angeles in my apartment was $750 in 1996 that very same apartment now rents for $2,300. You cannot be single and live in the big cities any you need two people earning it an income to survive or anywhere else for that fact

Edgardo Soto tragic...in a wealthy country that has so much. at the very least there should be provision for people to camp legally ...if that is their only means of shelter ...what is the point of wealth/being rich if it can't at least provide the very basics for the very poorest? i understand that some (not all) may have not helped their situation...but that ought not to be a excuse for some common decent humanity? is it so lacking nowadays? stay safe, stay strong...

Vincent de Guard Excellent comment,Good Questions for which we know (some of the solutions) but not All the answers. But we DO know Some of them. The division of richest and poorest is becoming exacerbated by corporate greed (again) that has gone on LONG ENOUGH,Why should the people take the blame ? Everyone knows it's the bankers fault.
Thanks man, and YOU stay safe too bro = )

When I was homeless I found a place under a bridge where people NEVER went even though it was downtown. I can't stress the importance of a carefully scouted location highly enough. And at night I would ramble to find disguarded material for building. I used 87 cents for a screwdriver and $2 for woodscrews. I began with cardboard, a good insulation and windbreak. I clad the outside in wood made substantial by screws and wedged firmly against the concrete of the bridge. I found padding and carpeting. I built a rope suspension bed like frontier people did. I started off with a donated sleeping bag and some old army blankets. I built a place to hang my clothes. If I had the money I would do laundry but otherwise I would take my soap to a nearby sprinkler and do laundry and shower at the same time. I cannot stress too much how important it is to be clean and presentable. I did odd jobs until a friend of mine was promoted to manager at the restaurant across the bridge from my house and that's when the climb back up started. Let me say three things. 1) YES it CAN happen to you. 2) You have NO idea how much trouble you can save yourself by planning ALL aspects of living homeless. And 3) To recover make longer range plans but break your goals into small, realistic steps that you can ACTUALLY accomplish. And good luck.

I have been a couch-surfer with three children after a divorce; all the while looking for a full-time job when employers were only hiring part-time workers. I ended up with four part-time jobs, I only worked three on any day; meanwhile applying for any full-time job I qualified for. I did end up getting my dream job through hard work and being persistent; I am now retired from that job with full benefits. I vowed never to be homeless again and bought my house outright, plus I live within my means.

If you have a mortgage your name is on the deed, and you'll still have equity for on what you've paid off. Maybe he fully paid off the home, and then he couldn't afford an increase in taxes. Is there a reason you should bag on p
ol' random homeless guy over there? I've seen a lot of folks spread their propaganda on these posts. Not that it matters, he may be a liar, he may be a drug addict. I'm a small business owner, but everyday things could sway towards homelessness just as easily as getting a windfall of revenue. It's a rough game, it's all pay to play, and it's all rigged. Upward mobility is a lie. If I do find myself homeless again here soon I'll be fine.

    • @nodinitiative
      @nodinitiative 6 лет назад +1

Critical Role Highlights You forget about property taxes. There are property taxes that charge you 1% of the estimate value of your house and land. So if your house was the average $400k, then you would have to pay $4000 per year or costing you $334 per month and if you found yourself unemployed and then only manage to get a low paying job.
I think using $334 per month on food and real essentials is much better than giving it to a government that does not really care about you.

People who complain and have no answer to the problem, should just keep their mouth shut. Contribute something and maybe I’ll listen.

I remember years ago when the United States was a developed nation. It was in the 1970s.
Nowadays the only wealthy nation in the whole of the Americas is Canada.
If the Canadians were smart they would build a fence on the US border.
