    I'd point out that a very small number of Bravil's employed people are in jobs that would aid the local economical growth. 11 of them are employed by the city's nobility or church, both of which aren't really industries. The Fighter's Guild is a tiny chapter, more of a waystation. The Mage's Guild chapter is thriving, but only mages have access to their wealth beyond taxation. Ursanne Loch may as well be unemployed. And a huge number of the remaining people are just trainers. So, in terms of actual laborers and business owners for the city's wealth, 12 people, or 20.3% of the population, and even that's stretching to include S'Krivva. This is beyond an unemployed labor force, what labor force they have isn't able to grow the economy.

      Makes sense. unfortunately, the logic in this should account for gameplay>economic realism. what does it take to feed cyrodil? take the number of farmers in the game and scale it up to a reasonable number. maybe we should be scaling down people of interest the same way. trainer, guild, guard, adventurer, and shopkeeper numbers are important to gameplay, so we shouldnt be counting them straight up

      I wonder how bad Bravil is compared to Riften in TESV? Riften seem to at least have some industry (fishery, Black-Briar Meadery, and some farms) and perhaps better location (right next to Morrowind), but much worse in crime, corruption, and leadership problem.

      Mostly correct but more to a much minor degree than Leyawiin. Both cities are close to the mouth of the niben river which allows access to who enters and who leaves. If cyrodill didn't control the mouth the imperial city would have a really tough time defending the river and having access to trade across Tamriel since it's typically easier to trade by boat than by land.

    Regarding Bravil's place as a port, the real question is how long it takes to travel up the Niben to the Imperial City. If the distance is big enough, Bravil could make money selling hospitality to merchants on their way to the City. However, it may just be the case that the Nibenay isn't big enough for this to be profitable.

    Merchant ships would likely have stopped at Bravil, mainly because tramp shipping is the main form of shipping and it involves stopping everywhere. However, merchants would likely only sell food and city-produced goods to ships because most land-based producers would go to the Imperial City to trade, because it’s richer. Leyawiin meanwhile is far away enough to get a decent amount of locally produced goods.
    Bravil therefore only really has the docks as an industry and it’s not a big one, and dock areas are always poor due to insecure work. Dock areas are plagued by the sight of workers heading to the dock gate every morning to find out if there’s any work for them. Because of this style of work, dockers have to live near the docks themselves, which contributes to the poverty of those areas. Even with centuries old forms of state welfare, such as English Old Poor Law, or the welfare of the Church, poverty was and has always been an issue in dock areas. Bravil has nothing really to sell to ships beyond bartering a few local items for essentials, so the dock trade is even more depressed than it otherwise would be. Behind every rich merchant city there’s a poor docks area, except in Bravil there’re few merchants and an even poorer dock area

    Imagine learning from a meme. These are great. Please don't stop making these.
    Also, I took classes on Micro & Macroeconomics last semester. You used terms like "Unemployment rate, Opportunity cost, Formal/Informal economy" -- Did you learn these concepts just for the video or did you learn about economics elsewhere?

    • @LeftoverPat
      @LeftoverPat  3 года назад +2

      I knew a little about these things going in and already had some idea to connect it to each but had a lot of research to do to get it right :) video was inspired by "lol what's Bravils unemployment rate"

    • @devinpallone1840
      @devinpallone1840 3 года назад

      @@LeftoverPat What were some points that you wanted to fit into the video but couldn't?
      For example: Philip's Curve. It's the economic concept that states (past a certain threshold) *more workers = higher inflation*.
      You probably could do a bit on PC, but that would lead down a rabbit hole of the economies of each town and how cities affect the economy of their surrounding towns.
      EDIT: Or how would war affect this town specifically. If more people were called to serve in the army, there would be labor being produced in the form of defense, but none of that production would make its way to Bravil. In fact, Bravil would lose out on any production those people could output.

  • @Bourikii2992
    @Bourikii2992 2 года назад +2

    Actually, in the past that was how emperors and their lords worked. A poor city makes the emperor no money and they retain power by making their citizens happy. Emperors and kings who were successful fucked over their lords in favour of their peasants to make themselves more money and give themselves more power over their lands.
    Also Bravils location is way more important than you think. Bravil sits right in the middle of the only major river between the ocean and the capital city. It's both a military and important trade city. Kinda hard to trade goods with the most efficient ancient trade method when a blockade is stopping you.

    Great video, but I kinda chuckled when you said “I don’t wanna make a video that’s too polarizing” when talking about class struggles, race and poverty - nuanced reality certainly has a way of polarizing audiences. I believe by talking about observable phenomena in video games, you can help connect the dots for video game players, many of whom have either been sheltered from or largely are permitted to ignore such problems in real life

    Makes me wonder if Bravil's situation would be better if it was located on the other side of Niben Bay. At least then it would have greater access to the rest of the county instead of being sandwiched between the river and Elsweyr.

    I noticed you mentioned the lack of Imperials but why not mention the lack of Redguards which are in each city except Bravil despite being a port which is strange since Redguards are avid Sailors. Also check out the relatively high Altmer population in Bravil. I see a correlation. Perhaps Bravil is a front for the Aldmeri Dominion?

    Bravil indeed would be a good place to have a harbor, but then Leyawiin and the Imperial City are on the other ends of the river, with Leyawiin being at the mouth of the river, usually a place for harbors and trading posts, it also sits on a narrow part of Cyrodiil, right between Elsweyr and Black March, wich explains the high argonian and khajiit population.
