When you hear people that buy Snap-On say you're paying the high price because you're paying for the service. If you have a dealer that won't give you the service then why would you pay stupidly high prices?

Warranty has to do with your dealers credit with snap on, in other words if your dealer has a bunch of stock and he is not selling anything and he owes snap on money then he wont give you your tool cuz snap on is not going to reimburse him. My dealer is great, he sells used tools and boxes, he always warranties my stuff, his truck is always full of promotions, he shows up 95% of the time and if you pay well he will hold a pretty big bill on truck accounts.

I stopped buying Snap-on tools 20 years ago and I have been a master technician for nearly 37 years.. a lot of us "old timers'"... refer to the Snap-on truck as the Tamp-on truck, because they take your money until you are bleeding... as a man who has been a professional technician for 37 years my best advice is to the younger guys do not buy the super high-dollar wrenches and sockets and screwdrivers from the tampon truck because you can get them for a fraction of the price with the same warranty from other retailers.

The problem is Steve, its never a fraction of the price by the time you by buy specific dealer tools in any brand at least when you buy Snapon tools from ‘your words’ tampon vans, when you finally go through the menopause there will be a substantial amount of secondhand value in your tools to enjoy your retirement. Good advice for youngsters and old broke retired Techs.

@@madeinusareviews6234 Snap-on Ratchet=$200, Home Depot Husky Ratchet=$20, difference of $180, that will buy a lot of gas to transport that ratchet if it breaks. I have broken 1 Snap On ratchet in 30 years and one Husky Ratchet. Waited 1 1/2 weeks for the Snap-On truck to come back to the shop to get the Snap on ratchet so I lost $ not having that ratchet on hand to work, Snap-On guy gave me all kinds of crap saying he wasn't sure he'd warranty the ratchet. Bought the Husky ratchet to use till Snap-On ratchet was warrantied. Used both the Snap-on and the Husky ratchet for the next ten years. When the Husky Ratchet broke, I was abusing it with a huge cheater pipe, but that night on the way home, I stopped by Home Depot and they warrantied it no questions asked. Didn't lose any time of using that ratchet as it was replaced instantly. So, about your argument on spending the difference in price on gas to go to warranty a broken Home Depot tool, It was many years ago, but I am sure if I had checked the mileage, that run by Home Depot didnt cost the $180 difference in price. Besides, I go by Home Depot at least once a week anyway because I am always building and fabbing projects, and who doesnt like an excuse to go to the big ass hardware store anyway. LOL!

I keep reading people posting when a store bought tool breaks all the gas you use ends up costing more. now aside from the gas cost I'll say this I have been using the same 500 piece craftsmen set for 15 years now never broke one tool use them daily even in way they are not meant to be, example I own no impact sockets but use my chrome al the same and never failed. finally 3 months ago the forward/back switch broke on my 1/2 put it back in my box went and bought a new one because I figured 15 years of use was good enough for me to pay for a new. I just recently this week handed all those tools and my old craftsmen box to my son since he is in auto tech and they are pushing snapon down his throat. I told him same thing I was told by a 30 year diesel mechanic my grandfather snapon is only a name there tools are no better than any other so long as it gets the job done efficiently I decided to give tekton a try replace all I had with tekton and just got them in yesterday. So to all those saying store bought tool will break 3 to 4 times a week bs because I have yet to experience it hell I still have a 3/8 ratchet and socket set I will never part with handed down to me by my grandfather being one of his first tools I still use them today and this thing is from the 40s.

The funny thing is every single Snap-On junkie is so proud of their warranty but all I hear is loopholes and horror stories. Lifetime guarantee shouldn’t come with stipulations of when, where and how you purchased it. If I find a broken old ( Klein, gearwrench, craftsman, husky, Pittsburgh, kobalt) tool on a sidewalk in a puddle frozen and broken left for nature by its last disgruntled owner, I could simply walk into its respective store and come out with a spankin new tool. Snap-On junkies are a dying breed. Won’t be long before Snap-On is a laughing joke.

Good video and thanks for sharing your experience. I have been wrenching over 30 years in both dealerships and now my own shop. I use a philosophy taught me by both my grandfather (35yrs as Mopar Mechanic)and my dad (32 years as a Caterpillar Mobile Mechanic). Both used the original US made Craftsman tools since back in the late 40's through the late 90's. Both told me the same thing, Snap on are nice stuff, but expensive. The Craftsman stuff at the time was pretty much the same in build quality as Snapon, but a little less expensive than Snapon, and if Snapon breaks, you wait till they tell you if they will warranty it. Craftsman could be exchanged the same day on your way home from work, then you can continue to work the very next day not missing the broken tool. Time=money, at the dealership and in the field. Disclaimer: since about 1998, Craftsman is crap, and since about 2016, is crapper crap. Sad that they are gone and the service Sears used to provide on Craftsman is gone too. At least Home Depot still has a warranty policy similar on their Husky brand tools. Try SK Tools, that's what we now use in my shop, US made, 1/3rd less than Tool Truck brands and they have been around about 100 years.

They don't have any records because the local dealer buys directly from SnapOn then resale to the mechanics so if you have a return it's coming out of the dealers pocket...not SnapOn corporation...so the warranty is only as good as the driver that's selling it to you which 99 percent of the time is an a hole when it comes to replacement. Based on your analogy, secondhand Snapon tools are not warranted as it is impossible to tell where they were originally purchased from.

I used mainly craftsman tools oh by the way if they find that you are using their tools for work and not home they will not warranty either. Thanks for sharing

At the end of the day, it really depends on your dealer. If you are paying a small fortune for something, the customer service better be there. Both my Snap on and Mac guys are decent old timers. One of the guys in my shop who has been there forever has a Mac calendar magnet from 1997. The first time I hopped on board the Snap on truck, I handed over two broken tools I got second hand and they were replaced no questions asked. I only buy the odd item off the truck.

I never had a problem with either of my tool boxes however any locksmith has boxes of these locks and they are cheap. I would have just gone to a locksmith and replaced it for less than $10. You are a mechanic and this is a simple job. Aside from that how long are you going to leave your box unlocked? People do not understand that the lifetime warranty is on the expected lifetime of the tool, not the owner. Quick trip to the Proto dealer saved me tons of cash.

To be fair I have Snapon tools in my box and some are 50yrs old and have had hard use. I bought Snapon just because in a few areas I wanted the best I could get. Sadly it was not until I went to work for Acklands Grainger 35yrs ago that I found out about Proto. A lot of my hand tools are Proto and I never looked back. With the staff discount I was getting most excellent pricing. I had a Snapon roller cab and 2 top boxes at one time. Then again its easy to sell Snapon. The name sells itself. There is always someone looking to upgrade their Harbor Freight and Westward tools. There are so many choices. At least on the Snapon truck I could get a toolbox that someone could not pay for just for the remaining cost. That worked out well. They are nice to say the least. I worked with 3 other mechanics at the time and it turns out they all had cheap tools and would rather use mine. Thats when I started locking my boxes....

Being buying Snap-On for 20 years. Warranties have never being a problem in any of my 2 dealers. I will mention that i treat my tools with much respect. I see what some other technicians do and cause to their tools and putting myself in the truck guy shoes i will also be concerned. Also we must understand that warranties will create expenses on the tool truck, buying the tool and then waiting for reimbursement from Snap-On. I have realized that my metal tools (SnapOn) had hold the value and even increased it in many cases during this time. Try that with some other brands! I also inherit tools from my grandfather that are discontinued and when they break i would get a newer modern version. If I had to begin again i will do exactly the same. Besides the point that when i have an SnapOn tool in my hands i just get the feeling of pride and it gets transfered to my jobs and projects. Also builds much respect with coworkers. One time i steeped out for lunch and a sales team member came and took a 13mm socket out of my cart to replace a battery. Transporter arrived, vehicle left and the socket travels in the Bimmer's trunk. I was upset and he said, no problem i buy you a replacement. I ordered it from my SnapOn guy and gave him the bill, he look at me and said:
"i had no idea that it would cost that much"
From that day on, he goes to the next guys' cart, not to my.
My rank order was Snap-On, Mac and Craftsman professional line. Craftsman is pretty much done, Mac rebrands too much other tools, Matco & Cornwell never showed up at the shop, no experience with these last two.

But the dealer has already paid for that item and yes he will get his money over time but it is not really fair to the dealer. Just imagine all the accounts he has and if everyone had a separate truck account, how does the dealer eat or make his payments or even buy the tools needed to stock his truck. For the most part you can buy 2 Protos or S-Ks (or other high quality "made in usa" tools) for the price of one snap-on. There is most certainly a "luxury tax" in owning snap-on stuff. As a business owner you can kind of "offset" that luxury tax by writing off the expense and saving on taxes. There is also an "opportunity cost". You could buy a $15,000 tool chest, and have one that says "snap-on" on it, or you could get by with a bunch of Homaks or Extreme Toolboxes, etc AND have a $10,000 -$12,000 economy vehicle so you don't have to drive your tow vehicle as a daily driver. . . .
It also irks me that people lump "made in Taiwan" together with "made in China". I could go on and on about quality differences, but further than that, is just the basic concept of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". Taiwan is a democratic country that is one of the most educated societies on the planet, and China is a communist pit of poverty. Buying from one is not the same as buying from the other. They are bitter enemies. The inhabitants of Taiwan were the original governors of all of china, and were defeated by the Japanese in WWII, when we gave the country back to them, after WWII, the communist party ejected the existing government into exile in Taiwan. Both claim to be the legitimate government for ALL of china, including Taiwan. They are in dispute with weapons pointed at each other. I don't think many people know the difference between buying "made in Taiwan" and "made in China", is so large. I think I need to make a "civics (not hondas) for toolheads " video.

    • @MrAnonymousRandom

And exactly where are you buying your Proto and SK for half the cost of Snap on? If you're buying online, you better know a friendly dealer on the ground who is willing to deal with your warranty problems. Proto and SK prices from an authorized dealer can almost be as expensive as Snap on much of the time. In terms of warranty, you're not much better off than buying your Snap on stuff used. As for Made in China vs Taiwan, Taiwan is a small country so there's only so many places that make certain tools, so it's easier for quality across the board to improve more evenly. As for China, quality is still kind of all over the place, though there are tool makers in China that are capable of making a decent product. As for politics, you seem to forget Taiwan used to be a dictatorship and that Taiwan's current politicians are lowering the bar when it comes to their conduct. Even China these days seems to be ruled by a bunch of relatively level headed people.

Mail them in or have a friend whos a mechanic send them to Crap On and get replacements. I take 35 yr old ratchets onto my snap pn truck and get brand new dual 80s... I just don't take any shit and i think he knows ill take his whole fn truck and throw him out while rolling if he tests me and trys to act a fool about some warranty bs... I spent mad $ i want my tools. My Mac guy rocks though Terry will always warranty anything MAC even drill bits and stuff you did not purchase from him .. For ratchets go 120 xp flex you can get the set for less than one snappy ratchet... 40 more teeth...

Snap-on Reps cannot just sell to anyone, they have contract with Kenosha that literally says they can only sell withing their route, so anther rouge cannot legally sell or else it can ve taken to court. If you have an issue with dealer call the customer service, there is a team that specializes in customer and dealer relationships and issues. If a dealer refuses to warranty a to for some reason, then call customer service (not corporate) , never have asked twice. If you have an issue with any product in the world, call the customer service. But I do agree that some dealers arent all that great, and it sucks that you got the short end of the stick.

We each have our own experiences which shapes our opinions. In my experience, if a dealer is not willing to warranty a tool, they don’t stay in business very long. If you purchase something from a pawn shop and it says Snap-on, any Snap-on dealer should warranty that tool. When every our shop changed dealers for what every reason, we have been through 4 dealers now, the new guy would come in and say our shop was his shop and if we needed anything we go through him. And he honored that. Broken slides on tool boxes, he warranted them. Broken tools he took care of them. And didn’t ask where they came from or how they broke. Also, we know the tools don’t make the mechanic. If your getting the job done, who cares what you are using. Sorry for all your bad experiences, good luck to you.

When I ran my route learning from my father I warranted any tool from any customer who bought from me and paid to agreed terms as long as I had a connection with the manufacturer or warehouse to access it. For a while even a group of competitors in the same marketing area cooperated with one another on a favor for a favor to accomplish this. Not everyone in a different company is an enemy and a competitor today may leave there and come into yours as a colleague or manager, so its always wise to be civil if not a conditional friend.

I watched my bro-in-law remove “made in china” stickers off of snap on items before he put them on his snap on truck.... made in USA my a$$... their service carts are made in China proved by “real tool reviews” channel... I wouldn’t doubt if their tool boxes are made in China too...
