Old school Technics fan here. I have 3 of them (1980’s models) and love them all. This new model is wildly overpriced, 4K is crazy, but fair play, those who wish to buy it will pay the ticket price. Personally I just prefer the look of the old ones, but it’s good to see Technics back on the scene. Great brand.

I have an SL-Q33 black and also a silver one. Incredible pieces of machinery both. No nonsense, built like a tank & very cool looks. Can not fault them. I recently acquired a more expensive SL 1600 mk2 that’s been customized but I’m leaving that until next month to try, after I get it tested by my hifi guy. Certainly cannot fault the SL-Q33, love that model!!!

Great overview of this table. A few years back, I was forced to replace my beloved SOTA Sapphire. (9” SME/Oracle 345 arm, Grado Master cartridge, Nordost cable). While lamenting its loss, the SL1200 GAE came out. I had the SL D202 back in college. Decidedly low budget, but it ran for over 35 years. So, I went for the 1200 GAE because of the wonderful experience I had with the D202. I was expecting decent sound, but nothing on par with the Sapphire. Got to say though, I have been pleasantly surprised. Its arm tracks in the grooves equally well, handling the heavy Grado cartridges I like with ease. The biggest thing is the quiet noise floor. Grado’s pick up motor and power supply hum easily. It never was a big issue for me, but it was there. That disappeared entirely when I mounted it on the GAE. The other improvement was with rumble, GAE is noticeably quieter than the Sapphire I had.
For me, the 1200 GAE has been truly a joy to own. Of course, at $4K there are other choices that rival it. Nonetheless, if someone wants a true high-end table, that is easy to setup, whose arm will work with virtually any type of cartridge, small footprint, plus bullet proof reliability. The new 1200 GAE or G is an easy recommendation. That is, if you can find one. For a table that supposedly too expensive. They sure do seem to sell out fast. With that sleek black look, I would expect no less of the 1210.

Looks sharp, but if I'm fantasizing about getting an upper tier turntable I am imagining a McIntosh MT5 (or MT10).
Love the cartridge I have the 2M Bronze which brings up a question. What would be the typical cartridge to turntable price ratio? I might have thought that for the consumer that would pay this much for a turntable would opt for a higher priced cart?

I discovered your channel a few months ago and although most of the equipment is out of my price range, I still very much enjoy watching your videos because I have such a passion for learning about all things HiFi. I really appreciate all of the hard work you and your wife put into each of your reviews and other videos such as this-- it's very apparent that you love what you do.
Anyway, I hardly ever comment on RUclips videos because I'm usually viewing from my TV... but I pulled out my phone super quick to comment here because I saw the GORGEOUS white vinyl that you had on top of that beautiful Technics turntable, and I totally freaked out with excitement! ROBYN - BODY TALK... Well-placed, my friend. Anyone who listens to Robyn earns automatic points from me; but the points quadruple if someone owns her music on vinyl! Either yourself or your wife (or perhaps both of you) has excellent taste in pop artists. I believe I own just about every one of her albums & singles that have been pressed on vinyl, as well as collaborations she has done.
I feel much better now that I've gotten some of that excitement out. Thanks for all of your really cool, well thought out & informative videos!

First of all, thanks for your cool and calm reviews (and advertorials)! I believe the first time I suscriped on someones RUclips-channel ;-)
I need to replace my technics 1200mk2 and thinking of 1500C or 1200GR, just for listening (suggestion? because GR is much cheaper then your 'reviewed' GAE). I will use the technics SU-G 700 amplifier you're familiar with and got to have the right speakers. Your JBL L 100 and Klipsch Heresy IV reviews are very, very catchy, but I saw that you also had the change to listen to the Technics SB-G90 speakers. How are these Technics speakers, in this context, compared to the JBL and Klipsch?

High praise- that’s for sure. Having said that, I’m glad that you stuck your neck out. I’m not a format warrior. I play CDs, SACD’s, digitally stored music, streams from Tidal and records on my SOTA Nova, with the 2M Black cart. I agree with you, often the analogue output is better than digital. A case in point is the Saint Saens Symphony #3 “Organ” on thé Reference Recordings label. Nothing comes close to the sound quality. When the huge organ pipes dig down into the lower ranges, oh my word - I can literally feel it and I get goose bumps - terrific.

What a gorgeous work of art, the entire system really. Very cool idea to get all pieces in home at once. I'm so jealous!
I appreciate that you said this particular album and recording was superior on this setup compared to the digital format. I think that makes so much more sense than these blanket statements that are spread around of which media form is superior. I would love to experiment with something similar on my own.
In my experience I have gone as far as to hear the Clearaudio Statement at Axpona on one of those money is no object systems. Knowing that's as good as it gets and finding that I preferred the digital music they played on the same setup shortly after sealed the deal on which format I prefer when it comes to sound quality. The funny part is it actually killed spending money on incremental gains for turntable sound in my setup. If I wouldn't be happy with a $200,000 turntable I figured what difference would spending a $100 here or there tweaking things make.
Don't get me wrong I am still a vinyl lover and a big fan of the ritual of digging through bins in various shops to find a piece of history to bring home and enjoy start to finish. I just realize now that in this format it's enough to buy something you're happy with and enjoy the music. Whether you spend a few hundred bucks or thousands of dollars, just appreciate it and have fun.
My favorite table I own is an old Technics SL-Q2 with an Ortofon 2M Red. I bought the table for $20 used in rough shape. After some TLC and adding the Ortofon cartridge, it's perfect in my humble opinion. Seeing how this thing is still chugging along after all these years, I'd imagine anyone who purchases this new table in your video is going to be one heck of a happy camper for many years to come.
A bit of a ramble, and I feel like this is going to come off as me saying digital is superior, but that's not what I mean. You navigate these topics far better than I ever could, Andrew. This is why you have a channel and I do not LOL! I appreciate what you do. Solid content as always.

i don´t agree in one thing the problem is not being digital ,the problem is the 70´s(when it was developed) cd format that is so limited that a vinyl record if in conditions with a tuned turntable would sound always better, when DAT came out in the 80´s the first sony model was above any average person budget including the cassettes, but it was a good quality digital source, even records made from DAT tapes for vynil were incredible better than the cd version of it but to the point of never hearing the cd again ,that happened with several cd´s i bought and after listening and searching if my system had anywhere a problem, i realize the problem was the cd,wich i spend above average on a good cd player that today is still working perfect with no problems but not everyone as the money or the knowledge to do that, normally there were shops that had average prices and good quality components that you could ask ,and they would conect the components so you could hear and the technitian would make sugestions to improve it not staying above the person´s budget, but this was when people worked in stores ,no internet available and people lived with the money of their own stores, i had to close a family business since the early 60´s in 1994 ,because people started to buy this tiny systems that had all in one box that with luck everything would work ok for at the most 5 years, and i own systems that work today perfect that were from my great parents ,one of them in mono but with a sound quality superior to most of modern systems till 5K ,but you had to wait 30 minuts after putting it on before using it, it had to heat before use and mono with two speakers that even looking to the speakers the sound it seems coming from every particule of air ,this was the first concept of surround, developed in the 80´s, is like saying nakamichi are the best decks ,i experimented all the top decks from nakamichi since the 70´s and always found better in several categories ,the pioneer high-end deck from each catalog they release, so nakamichi only that turntable that sounds great but is always failing, needing service, and it doesn´t mean it´s better but for a person who don´t know how things work or doesn´t want to learn about it ,it´s the better one it auto corrects it self each second of the record or vinyl , regards

Excellent first look. I really enjoy it when you do a complete system overview/review like this.
I know I asked earlier this year but, could you do a similar video on Yamaha's Hi-Fi line. Especially the new A-S3200 integrated or the separates with the speakers, GT-5000, and CD-S3000. Everyone has done the A-S2100 and down. I think you would be the only one to do a video like this.
Could you also do a video on your personal opinion on CD players in the era of streaming and vinyl & industrial design brands outside of audio that stand out to you?

Wow. Great review. Just found the Turn table and cartridge for my dream set up. Beautiful. To round this off I’d love to have the Technics SA-1000A (the black version) and / or a McIntosh MC275 all on top of a four eyes woodworking black walnut record credenza. And bookending that with a pair of JBL L100’s with Black grills. “So choice.”

Great review, and man oh man does this Technics SL 1210GAE look so aesthetically sweet, and can only hope the audio experience is just as good as you described it as it could definitely be the turntable I'm looking for. Only barrier is the price is a wee bit out of my budget. I see you briefly compared to the SL 1500c, but how does the SL 1210GAE stack up to the Fluance RT85, U orbit plus, music hall classic, and technics 1200GR? Is the technics 1200GR compare better to thus 1210 GAE? Thanks and love the channel!!

Onto cartridges, depending on where you are in the world, I would highly recommend Nagaoka especially the MP200 it's the deep pink/purple one, as these use a Boron cantilever which is superior to the Nagaoka MP150 and lower , its a moving magnet cartridge and Boron is usually associated with MC cartridges, they track at 1.5 to 2grams and sound better than you would expect at that price point they can be tricky to obtain in certain countries like here in the UK I got mine from ebay directly from Japan. The GAE also has more finely brushed aluminium top plate . I think that's the difference between them.

I cannot find a review of the SL-1200MK7 as a vinyl listening turntable, all the reviews I find are DJ oriented due to the market audience Technics wanted to focus with the SL-1200MK7. Too bad because it is a great regular turntable.

I will admit that a really well recorded LP, on very fine equipment, can, most of the time, sound nearly identical to a cd made from the same master. I have two instances, where I have identical cd and LP, and listening casually, there is extremely little difference, only when I concentrate and listen for it.

the problem is that when using analog instruments ,digital couldn´t differentiate what were efects as in analog ones with noise so all lp´s from the 40´s till some years ago couldn´t sound as good as the vinil ,today there are lp´s that use a lot of guitar efects and the cd can already make them sound good but everything else is diferent ,the cd sound and the vinil ,as an example if you hear a beatles cd i can assure you that they never sound like they sound today the original recordings had a total diferent sound as in higher quality ,but this happened with all bands that uses guitars ,that ´s why younger people listen to old bands and say ,this was so bad ,in reality they are not hearing the same sound people listened when those Lp´s came out ,other example is Nirvana ,i really didn´t like it´s nevermind cd allthough i already knew the band since they release their first album and also a early release of in bloom single by sub-pop and i listened the nevermind cd and said how bad this version sound, after a lot of years i was listening to the aniversary edition of nevermind and said there in bloom sub-pop version and i wanted to show to some friends how good was this version but when playing the cd i listen and it sounded the same as the nevermind version ,well i just went home and looked for the nevermind in vinil that i think i never had heard it and when playing the record was like a new recording , the guitars sound as they were suposed to and the diference is huge ,the cd sounds real bad compared to the record ,as an example the siamese dream from smashing pumpkins sound very good in cd the guitars , but if one listens to the record it´s other world ,incredible good recording , there´s one cd that sounds great and it´s only guitars ,voice, drums, the first rage against the machine album ,today when making sound to a live concert indoors a lot of sound engeniers use the cd to be sure if the sound is correct, in the 80´s i remenber using the Soul mining from The The, regards

I do not say that it doesn't, I say that it (a cartridge) is not pre-installed. But Technics DID NOT supply me with the Nagaoka cart, so we did not mention it.

Michael Jackson - Dangerous my first cd I ever owned back in the 1990 I think and it blew me away, I had a JVC HiFi setup and I remember that I just kept listening the whole album over and over for days 🙂 So I guess we have the same favorite album 👍🏻😁

a very good looking turntable, Dangerous?well not all have the same taste but i respect all tastes,i worked for decades in a radio station when one put the records playing as we wanted and also for 35 years i was a dj and technics followed my life since 72. I bought recentelly a "modern" system i purchase another technics turntable but the SL-1500c with the same stylus you have there the 2M ortofon black with golden letters ,also a Magnat hybrid amp. with bluetooth and those big looking old speakers from magnat also that you talk about in a video, regards

Looks awesome. Of course it sounds awesome with a 2m black over a red. My blue crushes the red. Also nice dust tail coming off stylus . 😂

The Technics is a beautiful turntable - I would love to have it ... but I just bought an Audio-Technica and it looks exactly the same in almost every respect. Build quality might not be the same but I paid $250 for this Audio-Technica AT-LP120XUSB ... these two are nearly identical. The Audio-Technica I have is very similar to the Technics SL-1200Mk7 ... the power knob, the weighted plate (mine weighs about 23lbs), everything - looks the same, but for $250. Sound is great too. Maybe I will get a Technics one day bit for now this AT is great!

I have the same and the main difference between turntables tbh is the plater or plater mat. Most high end have acrylic which I upgraded mine too. And finally the stylus tbh. I have the ortofon 2m red and I wouldn't want any another tunrtable tbh

@W N you're probably correct however hardware wise doesn't always translate to a huge difference in sound. At least I haven't personally listened to music on a 2000$ setup so maybe I'd change my mind but I feel there's only so far the sound quality can go before our ears really aren't even telling the difference

    • @jeffersononetwo
      @jeffersononetwo 4 года назад

@W N I wasn't sure if it is a copy-cat case ... I read about the company and the AT was slated to replace the Technics SL-1200 ... I didn't understand the relation of the two companies though. But no doubt, I would imagine the expensive Technics has much better hardware and fit & finish. But man, the design is a spitten image of each other.

@@carloshernandez3177 So the better one have acrylic as opposed to aluminum or magnesium or something else? I figured the weight would be better - I may have to upgrade mine

@@jeffersononetwo its better for absorbing sound and they are the least likely to charge static to records. Now my records have no static at all when I take em off the turntable

Love this turntable, but unfortunately won't have the $4k required before they are all sold out. My 1987 SL1200MKII will have to make do. Question...I've always pronounced it Tech-neeks. How do the Technics people pronounce it? This has sometimes been a question that others have also asked thru the years.

    • @chriseaton2730

Tech-neeks is the correct pronunciation. It's is how they say it in their own marketing info. The guy who runs Modern Classic mentions it in one of his videos.

It's certainly a classic design that has stood the test of time and even getting better. It's gorgeous. That all said, I like my mid 80's modern conveniences that my Pioneer PL-707 gives me. I want full automatic at that price point.

    • @bbfoto7248

I have the PL-707 in my TT collection as well. It's a decent budget performer and I really like its aesthetics, too. That one is paired with a Denon DL-106 MC cartridge and really brings the music to life.
A bit off topic, I'm really saddened that Amoeba Music has closed its doors. :( It was my favorite place to explore, find, and buy all types of vinyl and CDs/SACDs/Blu-Rays.
You could acquire just about any rare, OOP, or collectable release imaginable there. It will be missed.

Andrew, welcome to the world that those of us who have spent long green on turntables and phono preamps have known for years. Yes, I very much love hi-Rez streaming from Qobuz through my Benchmark DAC 1 USB. But with good records on a high end TT, “reality” is just a bit closer.

I like the pitch controls and other things on this turntable. The 1500 lacks those.

@@HowIsThat69 That varies. But, I like to use it every so often just for fun or to compare the speed (by memory) between a stream or radio play to the LP.
