Very cool. My how these have evolved. I had the very basic Technics SL-D1 back in the late 70s. Full manual. Was something like $120 new, which as a kid, was the most I could afford. But it beat my previous Garrard TT on all fronts. Loved that SL-D1. Gave it to a friend who still uses it and is going strong. I hope to order a 1200G in the coming months.

Thank you Fernando. I recently bought a Technics MK3 ex Vietnam. One owner, well maintained and serviced. I absolutely love it and doesn't have the issues my Rega Planar 3 had which used a mass produced industrial 110V synchronous motor with a resistor for 240 Volts and different current pulley size for AC frequency. I've since picked up a Technics CD player with MASH sampling but my MK3 is allowing me to hear things on my review that I've never heard before through a NAD C268. I enjoyed this video very much

Yeah, the 1200G is definitely suitable as an endgame turntable... speaking from experience!
There used to be a 20-30 minute video on RUclips by Panasonic Japan where they went into much greater detail about the background of the G and all the work that went into creating it. The original models were made at the Panasonic plant in Utsunomiya, Japan before they moved all production to Malaysia. The video seemed to disappear after that.

Love these kinda manufacturing vids. Seems like you get soo much more value, quality, engineering, product, etc. with ProAudio type stuff (like Technics TTs), esp Japanese brands... than you do in the "hi fi" world (filled with snake charmers).
I have a pair of old M3Ds myself (20 years ago, I had M5Gs... sold them cuz I needed money for a move).
Makes me wonder tho... I have HS8s and use them for record listening (and love them), and thinking/wondering if it has the same value/quality/engineering per dollar like say the Technics, on a sonic/acoustic standpoint for speakers.
I dream of Forte or Cornwalls someday... but, it seems like you're not getting the same level and ratio of quality-per-dollar as compared to Technics or other PA stuff. PA stuff is highly mass-produced tho... so maybe that's why they're much cheaper too.
And that makes me wonder how much better (or maybe, how little) a difference/upgrade it would be to go from cheap HS8 to say Fortes.
I'd be thoroughly disappointed & upset if the improvement was minimal (or worse... worse than the HS8), after switching to Fortes.
$5k + another few-K for an amp, if a minimal sonic improvement, would obviously be a major buyer's remorse, lol.
Only time I've heard Klipsches was in Japan in jazz-kissas and underground clubs. But they were usually Khorns, and 2-6 of them throughout the space. So not really a good gauge/test. (of course, they sounded amazing).

That factory was closed and moved to Malaysia since April 2021.
yes I made mention it was the old factory. Same looking likely.
@@SkyFiAudio Yeah probably, but things like only 30 motors a day probably doesn't apply anymore, because I think they've likely scaled up production quite a lot.
People didn't expect there to be such a high demand for these Technics turntables!
I got my 1200G back when it was still made in Japan and waiting lists were really long back then... like 4 to 8 months.
Are these good servicing as old classic japan made technics ??
Great reporting on the techniques turntable back in the late 70s I bought a techniques turntable I don’t remember an SL 1200 or 1500 to go with my Yamaha 1020 receiver I also had a pioneer real real and an Akai tape deck cassette deck. Anyway, I wish I still had them all. I still have my Yamaha receiver, but unfortunately, I basically gave away. I tap decks, my real real and my turntable, but I wanna know what’s the difference between The SL 1200 and the SL 1500 back in the late 70s I don’t remember which one it was I had though I know I paid a lot for it cartridges I don’t remember I don’t think they were that bad. I think they were around $200.00 or so dollars for the good ones back in that time at Dow stereo I think it was in San Diego Ca.
But I still have a bunch of LPs in a box and I’m thinking about buying another turntable. Not sure which route. I should go for that nowadays without spending an arm of the leg.
Now I know why the RCA jacks are placed in such a strange and hard to reach place!

Very impressive - I have a better understanding of why these aren’t cheap.
man I stumbled upon a youtube video, maybe in the mid 2000's, interviewing someone who worked at the company. this person was saying that the blueprints for these turntables (the predecessors) had been lost in a fire (or flood or something). I've never been able to find the video again but I'm wondering whether it was true. seemed legit. but could have been towards 2009, when the company had decided to stop production altogether. I know there was a fire in 2008 at the battery factory but uncertain as to whether it was close to where the blueprints were stored (physically or virtually). there does seem to be a bit of a gap between the mk5 and mk7, so who knows? they could always have reverse engineered and gathered whatever they could find in order to resume production after the petition. perhaps they got help from AT and pioneer, who had developed their own clones by that stage, to fill the epected gap. perhaps it simply never happened at all, but I'd still love to find that interview again. I think it also involved a factory tour or at least I remember it being set in one of the offices. ring any bells at all?

There’s a misconception that the quality changed. Trust me it didn’t. It was simply a move that was more cost effective. I have GR made in Japan and GR 2..they are both well made.
All Technics turntables are made in Malaysia for about two years now.
I haven't noticed any quality differences and none have been reported to me. As long as they are well assembled I'd rather take the cost reduction on the item. I suspect with the labor rate in Japan these tables would be substantially more,.
When they still made the decent Japanese tables. Not the trash you will buy now.
It's making of the NEW SL-1200. It's absolutely and categorically not in the same quality line as the original.

I own a 1992 1200Mk2, and I wanted to buy this 1200G just for the pleasure of it. I did some research, and was put off by the fact that this new model is equipped with a switch-mode power supply, and SMD components. Totally prohibitive for me, this type of electronics is programmed obsolescence. Too bad... 😪
There’s no better than quartz locked direct drive,
Lots of comments about it not and belt drive is better but they forget that direct drive “motors” are spinning the slowest of all including idler driven of course,
Essentially there are electrical convection, contactless operation , no belt needed
Try dragging the platter over a table using a(springy) belt vs using your fingers and tell me with way is the on you can get accurate speed with the platter doing it.
Cogging,, well having a spring/belt pulling it towards one side vs precisely electric magnetic convection pushing outwards 360 degrees all at the same time all the time extremely accurate, please,, dd wins.
It cost a lot to make and pattern dd, that’s why the guys at project and rega doesn’t have it.
I dream that JVC is soon making the really high end players again, amazing wood bodies combined with aluminium and analog gages for tracking force, anti scating and damping 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻❤❤❤

My $4300 SL-1210G has had manufacturing issues since delivered. Panasonic NA has been impossible to deal with to get warranty repair/replacement.
I will NEVER buy the unsupported crap they put out to US consumers again.
Not made in Japan anymore... Sigh...
