Sony ES compact disc players were great for most part but Sony's ES mini-disc, single cassette, DAT, decks were the one's that got me rolling and I'm glad I caught some of the glory of that fun time. I still prefer manually recording and with so many great options to get high quality audio to your home and pocket we are all (music lovers and audiophiles) truly blessed to have these options that were impossible decades ago.
Your video put me alert for Sony ES cd players. Recently, I bought an X77ES for (ahem) $25. (Yes, the guy knew what he had, but he wouldn't take more $$!) The door didn't work, and it had an alarming amount of corrosion inside: green from the copper, white from the aluminum, and orange from the steel. So, the chassis is copper plated or painted steel! I got it all cleaned up, lubed, etc., and now it works well and sounds amazing! Thanks for the tip!
Beautiful machine, I had the original 555ESD from circa 1987 15kgs of then flagship Sony quality predecessor to the 557ESD which is the European version of the 707ESD you mentioned. The 555 used the super smooth magnetic railed BU1 father to the 272 transport, these machines are a joy to use and pride of ownership is high, just using one (and picking one up) you simply know it's quality and is going to sound great. I have a sony XA9000ES sacd player, it's a fantastic piece of equipment & sounds amazing.
Well 2018, I got hands on a whole system of 707 es, from a man who was working for Sony. This CD player is still in use in my system. It is build like a tank.

I use a Sony DVP-S7000 as my CD transport and it's pretty great. They put a lot of love and care to building tech in those days! I just got a new Sony 4K Bluray player that's also an SACD player and I doubt it'll be at the same level of quality...

I used to own the 707esd with a full Sony ES stack. Really high quality gear. That CDP weighed somewhere around 40 lbs and had an all copper chassis! I regretted selling the stack but I was on to another HIFI high. I highly recommend buying vintage CDPs with the TDA 1541 DAC chip. those CDPs sound really good!

Those TDA chips were Phiips , they were excellent.
I also have a CDP707esd it outlasted my newer Arcam 36D player, Arcam sucks.
All my praises to your video. Sincerely, you do this very well. Funny how it's always much more pleasant and sincere to watch a repair man than it is audiophiles or marketing/sales people. Hopefully you won't mind a question here and there and could find time for a brief answer. Your video helped me with a lot of what puzzled me (I always though it was some kind of an error the fact that after the unit reads the number of songs and total length of the CD after inserting one, it quickly goes back to showing zero, but I see your does this as well). Also I hope I can help some - in my xa5es, the transformer isn't covered so you can see it labeled audio and digital. From what I managed to gather by downloading manuals, one "branch" is supposed to power up everything up to the DAC and then the other branch takes over and powers up components up to the audio out.
Obviously if you're using it as a transport, only digital will do the job.
And now a few question I kindly ask you to provide some answer to:
Is there any real world benefit from copper inside?
My xa5es has KSS-273A and as you said, sometimes it's just a number that makes difference, but this mechanism, according to specs is not supposed to move the laser, but the CD (the spindle and the entire rotor that spins the CD moves, this is supposed to prolong the life of the laser mechanism) as opposed to what you're saying a magnetic sliding for the mechanism.
So, my second question is the magnetic sliding you're talking about the tray in/out sliding or does it move the laser as it reads?

I have had it...and sold it in 2000..... i miss it. Accuphase used the Drive, it was so massive. The Quality of the Sony Players back then was Awesome.

Great review. I have had the Sony X339ES for over twenty-eight years. It is a great CD player. Recently, I have been looking for CD transport for around $1,000 to go with my new Emotiva XDA-3 DAC and almost decided on the Cambridge Audio CXC v2. I love their design after I got myself their CXN v2 streamer last year. But when I played the Sony through the Emotiva, the sound was marvelous. Excellent detail, sound stage. That tells me that the Sony transport is very good so I might put off buying the transport till later. A few little issues like the door gets stuck occasionally or the remote doesn't operate well but they seem to fix themselves up.
Hello, I have the 707ES and I could not compare with other models like the 777es which are from the same era. I've heard of Micro Seiki players from the 80s, Victor JVC devices from the 90s. The Japanese, before anyone else, made high-performance devices that are still sought after. I listen to classical and I find this player suitable with my Cabasse.
My dad had one of those, he had a counter point pre amp, a CJ tube power amp and Ohm Walsh5 speakers. There was a record player too but I always brought a stack of my CDs down to listen to music on it when I could. It never had an issue.
Sounds like your dad had great taste. Those are great brands.

I owned the XA-5ES. The build quality was superb but the sound was a tad lacklustre. I replaced it with a Rotel 971 that was far more transparent & open.

In fact, Sony was able to improve on this ES cdp with that chipset, in subsequent modes with a mysterious current-pulse CXA8042AS device, that sat between the DAC chip and output stage.
Really, in my opinion, any of the Red Book format 7-series (707ESD/557ES, X77, X707, X777, X779, XA7) are amazing. My word is worth jack to most but I actually own multiple of most of them and have compared them. My favourite are the 779 but I’m probably just biased as one of those was my first high-end player.
There are however known but fixable issues. The 272 are great and faults are not common but the laser does wear out. However, issues with the transport like weird behaviour or reading discs are likely not the laser.

I have the newer CDP-XA7ES with the fixed laser mechanism, also in champagne finish, and to me it's the finest CD player ever made. Absolutely marvelous in every respect...
The XA7ES also made a great transport. My friend is using it as a transport with a Sonic Frontiers SFD-2 tube dac on it. This combo sounds great.

@@crooner2007 thanks. I'm sorta surprised I haven't seen more ead gear on this channel with as much vintage stuff should open up the chassis on some of these units and admire the build quality. I have seen. They really made some good stuff back in the day before they were bought out by Tara labs (alpha digital) . Sorta have a collection of ead equipment from them from their first generation theatermaster pre/pro (without the screen) , newer signature prepro( silver Jeff Rowland finsih with screen,) esp 7000 series 3 dac and their big postmaster 2000 amp. This amp still has effortless power compared to the pass labs, MARK levinson etc. I guess it should weighting 120 pounds. I has my dsp9000 pro series 3 sent back a few years back to have if upgraded and modified by the original designers. Has what was $600 in black gate capacitors and other proprietary mods. It more than completes with the top digital stuff but doesn't do higher resolution. I guess only 400 were made so the reason for not many out there. Just wish mine was in the rare gold finish . Good stuff that I still continue to enjoy!

I had a really great Sony cassette deck once TC-fx1010.
Havent found a lot of info on it. But when I took it apart to refurbish it everything was overbuilt and on little subsystem boards, like high end VCR approach.
The front panel also had a grey with blue and orange color scheme that was very production suite looking. Sadly it had membrane buttons.
But it sounded wonderfull. Great deck for playing back board tapes of live concerts. Dolby B/C, 3 head, metal capable.
You could save tape bias ssettings into its 'computer'.
Had a programmable VCA for some reason, making it the ultimate mix tape deck.

Me too. I always hear that Sony SACD drives aren't reliable, however mine is still working flawlessly.
Very nice player I have the rare 605esd from 87' It was $1k U.S. bu-1 mech 192a optical pickup and PhilipsTDA 1541a dac chip sounds wonderful espically for the age the player has extreamly fast tracking and its a 9.5/10 Cosmitically

This was Sony at the top of their game. The insides of this unit are a thing of beauty. So we'll laid out with good use of components. It's apparent lots of thought went into these units. I agree later Sony es were not the same. Mostly marketing. But when Sony decided to put out a quality es piece they had the chops to do it. I have almost bought one of these a few times in the past. Just to use as a transport. I noticed this unit has the headphone jack like many Sony's did with the volume control. Was that tasted? Just a afterthought or is it any good? It's sorta a shame for Sony to build such a beautiful machine and use such a generic manual. These pieces deserved more. I bet they measured good on the bench. Thanks for taking us down memory lane !

@ home in the UK I still use my Original Sony Playstation one SCPH-1001 integrated into my hifi set up, such incredible performance from something so small and I really enjoy listening to it.
Was rumored the Playstation had a very good drive in it, and lots of people were hunting for it awhile back. I don't know much about it though.

I still use that model too. Top loaders so simple to use and sounds great with my vintage Marantz separates and JBL 100 classic. Also have Sony ES SACD player and external tube dac and ladder dac. Funny, others will be louder than PS1 but its musical and just turn up volume and use marantz tone controls and get as much bass and weight to the music as I could possibly want. Think dacs and expensive transports are kind of overblown after being down that rabbit hole. Tone contols are where it's at for me. I would have no idea how good the bass could be on my l100 classics without them and not all tone controls are created equal so guess I'm saying preamp is way more important then dac.
I've had a sony es sacd player/dvd player for like 20 years. Runs just the same today as when it was new.

CD tray opens slowly but doesn’t not retract inwards automatically. When manually pressed gently, the cd goes in and all play ff rew etc works fine...sounds like what you had to do...I would think the belt needs replaced...is a shop guy going to know how to fix this?

I have a Sony cdp -ce375, its been very reliable and sounds great, yr. Made, 2007 I think, could you please verify, yr. And your thoughts on this one. It says High linear high density on front on lower front panel in gold lettering. Bought new 07,never had issues, and sounds really good, paired with Pioneer 94 txh elite and ElacBu52 2.0 book shelf speakers. Sounds really clean. Work well together. 2 channel system. It's over 15yrs old, and still running well. Moved once, think Sony is under rated. Your thoughts please 😁🤘 on the CD and matching components, thanks
was the X707es an export SONY CDP-777ESA? These are quite expensive, costing around $1000 used on the used market (the rare times you can find them, they are quite uncommon here in the US). That's as much as some of the higher end modern Blu-ray players that play CDs like a boss and also play DVDs and Blu-ray players exceptionally well as well like Pioneer's BDP-LX500. Is there any serious advantages of getting an old CD player like this over a brand new higher end blu-ray player like the LX-500 or even a Panasonic DP-UB9000?

I picked up an Ayre C-5xeMP CD/SACD player for about $2,800 used on eBay. (It retailed for $6,000.) I guess because it's considered a super audiophile player, I never hear it compared to other high end players such as the Sony X707ES.
Given a high quality CD, there is nothing "digital" about the sound. Robust, focused highs that are also delicate, free of any trace of digital glare. Rich, powerful bass, filled with detail. The imaging is amazing. I'm able to hear the ambience of the sound booth that a vocalist is in, separate from a half-dozen instruments.
I have a sony s5000es it's extremely reliable my dealer told me never to get rid of it this player was made and manufactured in Tokyo Japan.
Sony CDP-X5000es is technical identical to the Sony CDP-XA7ES..........super player built in a smaller housing.
Sony were the king of cd players and minidisc as they invented both of them, the reason they didnt use mains sockets is because it would Undo all the work they did inside, every equipment mains socket has unwanted electrical characteristics, this is why the ES and QS used a direct mains connection, and of course a direct connection to the transformer with top quality shielded mains cable is the best option. you havent heard a CD until youve listened to one of these players, they made some really nice QS players as well. i use the Sony CDP-XB930E so i can simply transfer my CD masters to minidisc including track marks and TEXT using the A1-II data cable

just wondering how do you find those laser head replacement ? i found these old vintage cd players very prone to laser reader failure and most of them are not in production
You are correct. Look on Ebay to see if they have any. I have a Wadia 16 CD player from 96 and replacement parts are hard to find
Tricky to find but they are out there. Funny thing is, we find early lasers much more reliable long term than the later.
I have had 2 Sony dvps7700es cd/DVD players I have used as transports and in both units the DVD laser portion would fail but CD laser would still continue to read disks. Used them as CD transports. Guessing Sony has no more laser replacements for these. Folks probobly just just buy another used whole player as a replacement.
Does anyone know what the relatioship of the x707ES and Technics SL-PS900? They have almost identical controls and front layout (SL-P9000 has more controls). (I think Sanyo has a model with the same layout as well but I dont remember the name).

@@SkyFiAudio Yeah now that I watched your video it was obvious. Lol. I think it is interesting that many CD players from that era used the same dimensions and similar UI. I wonder if it was just a case of cost savings using the cheapest trinkets or was it a marketing approach to connect high end products in the market to cheaper items. Probably marketing but I couldn't say.

I had to buy a Sony CD bombox player cuz the PS4 don't play music CDs. I was really frustrated about that but I'm glad that this CD bombox works great. I can now listen to my CDs anywhere I go and I really like that portable feeling.

I have owned several Sony ES CD players. The Sony CDP-302ES and CDP-520ES uses a large linear motor like this one from 1985. One of the fastest drive units ever from what I have read. This old player from 1985 would play any CD or even CDR that I could throw at it.
The Sony DVP-S9000ES player I have had the optical drive replaced a few years back, no linear drive motor, some kind of metal worm drive gear system. It does have the copper chassis, those cool screen mesh filter vents to keep insects out, Nichicon Fine Gold audio grade capacitors inside, and weighs about 40 pounds. Spent $200 on the unit and another $300 to replace the laser servo drive unit, but not bad for $500 investment. Who knows how many hours the new laser will deliver, but time will tell.
I had the 9000ES as well. I bought it to try SACD. Did you do any mods to the power supply? The reason I ask was mine sounded OK, but when it was connected to my system, my other sources didn't sound as good as they normally did. I had no idea what the issue was, but after some experimenting, I noticed that when I unplugged the Sony, everything went back to normal. The solution was fairly simple. I callee Cable Company and they knew about the issue. I ended up getting a JPS power cord that has a filter on it that stops the noise from the power supply from getting into the rest of the system. It was not an expensive cable. Digital AC+ is the model. But if you have that same problem, a cable like that will fix the issue.
@@AT-wl9yq Sounds to me like an RF bypass capacitor has failed in the power supply. Are you sure it is not digital noise from the video circuits? I turn the digital output off and video output off and run the RCA audio output to my preamp. It doesn't sound that good as a transport or playback of redbook CD. It sounds wonderful as a SACD player and that is all I use it for. My Cambridge Audio Azur 640C mk II sounds much better as a transport, don't know why, but it just does and it plays CDR which the Sony will not.
@@zulumax1 The issue wasn't the sound quality of the Sony. With the Sony plugged in and connected to my system, me Wadia CD player and my turntable didn't sound quite right. It wasn't a huge difference, but it was noticeable. I'm not sure if the issue was with the video section or the power supply. but the new cable definitely fixed the issue.
@@AT-wl9yq It is generating the noise, I get that. I would have to hook up my scope to it to see the hash and try to diagnose the source. It should not be doing that, there is filtering designed in to handle that, you should not need to externally filter it. Switch mode power supplies can be nasty.
Take a portable AM radio and tune it to a quiet spot on the dial, then use it to sniff out noisy wall warts and standby power supplies around the house.
I've got one of those in my storage cuprboard. Time to get it out for a play :D

My SACD player is an Oppo Blu Ray player. Do a lot of those come through your shop that need repair?
Most the Oppos we've had have been reliable but I wonder if folks just toss out the ones that fail in this era of disposable electronics.
@@SkyFiAudio They're built like a tank so it doesn't surprise me that they last. They also continued making their players full size while the rest of the industry was putting out cheaply made units that were lightweight and in smaller, thinner boxes.

I just saw a video of a CDP shootout , an Esoteric Grandioso K1 ( $27,000 in 2017 ) and a 1984 Philips cd-104 (approx. $400 at the time ) , well , believe it or not , there was no difference in sound quality. Is it worth spending tens of thousands for a hi-fi component ?
I realize it's anecdotal and perhaps I'm fortunate, however I own the Sony DVP-CX777ES 400 disc jukebox and it's SACD and produces incredible sound. My receiver is the Sony STR-ZA5000ES which may go down in history as Sony's last gasp "big black box" home theater unit. I love it. Sony has the ability to compete wherever they choose on a world class level along with reliability and warranty. 5 years on my receiver.
Perhaps you could explain the interaction, or lack thereof regarding the SACD signal's inability to interconnect through coax or HDMI. I assume it's only RCA or XLR forcing the utilization of the onboard DAC. I've often wondered if the older native SACD components/chips can be upgraded with more modern versions and would it even improve enough to be perceived.

XLR and RCA have nothing to do with anything. They're just connectors. XLR supports up to 3 conductors and RCA 2. RCA connectors can go on regular single ended stereo interconnects, or a 75 ohm digital interconnect. Same with XLR. They are used on both analog and digital connections. Its the application that's important, not the connector.
As for your question as to why there are no SACD transports, you're almost correct. There was 1. Its been a long time now, but if I remember correctly, it was built into the specs of the format, like redbook is for CD. Somehow dCS (Arcam owns them), was able to get around whatever barriers they were. They made an actual SACD transport and dac, with an optional 3 piece, a re-clocker. The problem was the cost. All 3 pieces went for about 30k. I almost bought it for myself, but I'm glad I didn't. I already had really high end CD playback, so 30k just for SACD was too much. And it was the right choice. I ended up getting a single box player from Ayre and its great. I still have it.
Its also interesting to note that the reason so many people went back to vinyl and made it popular again, was because of SACD. Audiophiles were screaming for a new format to replace CD for a long time, and they finally got SACD. Then a few years after they released it, Sony pulled support for the format (it was around 2005). People were pissed. Everyone went out and bought a record player. The demand was so great, it was hard to get one. It took months sometimes.

The manuals that I've seen on the SACD players I've owned have all said that their player cannot/will not deliver the multi channel signal via SPDIF, XLR or HDMI. That the signal must leave the unit as analog via RCA interconnects into a multichannel means of amplification. So either an integrated amplifier, receiver or bank of monoblocks etc etc. That certainly seems to point directly at the interconnect as the lynch pin in the SACD system.
What am I missing? I'm not a pro or an engineer or even a smartass, honestly I simply wondered if the internal DAC inside my lowly Sony jukebox could be upgraded to an audibly discernable degree. Seeing as I could not otherwise circumvent it.

Building to such exacting standards and with such fine work on textures, finish and "feeling" is not possible anymore - built today, an X707ES would cost 5000€, if not more... They say on thevintageknob
Agreed that Sony was a brand to aspire to pre 2000, with the transition from a quality mindset to mass market plastic crap occurring ~95-2000
I disagree. Sony made some amazing stuff in the mid 90s to early 2000s.
They made the Sony ES TA-N1 Amplifier and TA-E1 Preamplifier. This Sony Amp weigh liked 160 pounds. It's one of the best amps. Sony made the XA7ES CD Player in 1997 which was amazing.
Sony made the Sony SCD-777ES and the SCD-1 SACD Player. Those were world class SACD players.

Indeed, Sony made some top notch pieces in the 2000s. We have a set of Sony ES TA-N1 Amplifier and TA-E1 Preamplifier in the shop I should crack open for you folks.
Those first generation Sony es DVD players were built well also in the late 90s. Sony's first generation stuff seemed to be built better. They still liked to use lots of copper, paying attention to vibrations and separating analog and digital sides.
I remember the x777 and the x779 but not this one, does anybody know the timeline for these 3 models?
Triple 777 was 1991, 779-1992 and the x707 came around 1993. Last of the Mohicans. The next model was completely different and while excellent not it wasn’t built the same. Some people like it better due to the transport moving the disc rather than the laser head but whatever.
Always preferred the Yamaha CDX-1060 or CDX993 :)
Those are nice pieces indeed. Hope to get one to review some day.

I've still got multiple Sony ES pieces; two different CD/SACD players, and two DAT decks.
Never cared for the Champagne aesthetic myself, I've got black and brushed aluminum.
I like a matching set but have no strong preference on the color.
Was the champagne color more for the Japanese market?

I use a $12 Philips cd player from the 80s, reads any cd perfectly, has a big display and the sound is pretty good...you don't need to spend $$$ to enjoy a rock solid player.
Absolutely correct. But for machines like this, the playing of CDs is almost incidental. It’s buying a piece of classic design. I would love to own one, even though I clearly don’t need one, and digital music delivery has moved on.
I agree with Jagan. For me its about the design and build quality rather than the sound. If I want perfection Ill just stream lossless.

Problem buying these old maschines. Once the laser is dead, you can trash the rest. You won’t be able to get replacement lasers for those old Sonys. I use an x777es as a transport. And I love, but also now it has limited time left :)
There are some replacement lasers floating around out there, just need to know where to look. Not sharing though :-).
Japanese made cd players are seemingly the most ubiquitous components in home.Sony made boatloads of models since their CD 101 Most players didn't use the same parts,so finding parts is unobtainable,especially the crucial laser transport hardware,unless you find a donor machine ----

Beautiful system, built quality solid ES standard but no SACD which gives better CD sound quality.
I agree. I had the 9000ES, and while it was good, I have other CD players that sound far better. I got it to try just SACD.
Love the later model SACD player from Sony too but its hard to find one that works reliably. Sure they will all mostly read redbook cds but not the SACD layer.
The ES line was really good bang for the buck for preamps, CD players, DVD players... If they made an ES prepro I'd have to test it out immediately.
Thanks to videos like that prices of old equipments incresed to the point were they are more expensive than they were new! 😅🤷♂ So NO NO NO i won't buy none of these!

thing is , there are 2 or 3 levels of sony ES i had a couple JA 30ES mini discs player - recorders both decks gave problems early in there lives both ended in the scrap pile
now a days next to NO new .. spares parts to repair any HIFI sadly a total through away world its all very sad indeed
