The best thing about electric vehicles is that we generate electricity in this country while we have to import petrol and diesel from the Arab countries. Petroleum products account for 30% of the value of imports into this country
Usually while buying an electric car,you get a warranty for the battery for 100000km. The batteries available nowadays don't use just lithium but also combine nickel and manganese. The most modern one is the lithium phosphate battery which is very reliable against cheap with a very long life. Actually tesla are using the lithium phosphate battery on their current model y. It can last for 1 million kilometres or 130 yrs
Buying a Nissan Leaf for 4m just to save on fuel is madness. I would instead buy a premio or a Legacy and save the 2m for ksh.1,500 daily fuel for 6 years and still remain some good money for servicing. 4m is overrating this car.
🎉The day has come! With the Leaf's efficiency being 16.6 kWh/100 km and a kWh (1 unit ya KPLC) being Ksh. 26.52, that means that it will cost you Ksh. 440.23 to drive for 100 km. Compare that with a Corolla, which is rated for 7.5l/100km and fuel costing Ksh 179.30 per litre, the cost to do the same distance will be Ksh 1,344.75. No wonder Super Metro and Embassava have jumped on electric, the running costs are so low.

Excellent review. On Hydrogen energy, it is very energy intensive to produce to the point of not making sense to use it as an environmental friendly source
Very informative but one thing is certain you cannot buy this car as your first car.Its best if it's your second for running errands within the metropolis
I will give it 8, Ibrahim is very right , remember the things to consider when buying a car, then there is nothing like saving the environment 😢 coz the mining and processing of this raw materials emits alot of harmful gases...but e-v takes the day.
Still, doing a average score for the battery life. At 4.5km, it is at 70%, the mileage was achieved in "suitable country", then this is a ticking bomb. Assume the battery life when it hits something like 25k km, and in tropical country like kenya.
Very in-depth review. Value for money is off but it is a good daily commuter car for someone plying Thika road , kiambu road or jogoo road. Basically ideal for people living within a 70km radius or Nairobi or their places of work. Erick please do a review of the Mitsubishi outlander Phev. It is Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle, meaning it can run on full electric mode, Gasoline mode or Hybrid mode. It could be really interesting.
Great job with the review. Best to ascertain the real cost per km i.e. charging, maintenance, insurance and amortized battery replacement over 5 years. When we do so we end up with a figure of almost KES 21.35l/Km (excluding depreciation). If we draw a comparison let's say with 1.5 Demio Diesel Turbo the cost per km= KES 14.5/km and almost KES 2.3-2.5 million cheaper for a similar 2017 year in terms of purchase price. Two things need to be done to make electric cars more viable in Kenya by the Government: lower import taxes for them and have a special tariff for their eletric charging. I frequent Addis and the streets are filled with brand new electric cars - VW ID.4,5, 6, Benz EQ series and other numerous Chinese brands. Here is the thing over there import tax for electric cars is only 5% 😮 whereas Kenya is 75% minimum or more if you don't under invoice. The power costs KES 3kWh and Kenya's is 27. I will stick to ICE for now but the Note e power is a better choice despite older looking but best to dispose it before 160,000km before the batteries give in. Has lower torque at 250Nm but is quicker off the line due to the very small 1.5kW battery pack. It is also way cheaper.
Also your point about the carbon footprint during the manufacturing process is quite true. About 100 kilograms (kg) of CO2 equivalent per kilowatt-hour (CO2e/kWh) is emitted. In this case for 30kWh battery about 3,000 Kgs of CO2. The Mazda Demio Diesel emits 89g of CO2 per km. If we compared both cars when new then it means the Demio would be at per with the Leaf in terms of emissions after being driven for 33,000 km. This could take 1.5 to 3 years. The situation becomes worse of the grid power is generated from coal or diesel, it is not green! A home Solar system will not be viable for this to charge in a few hours because it would cost close to KES 3 million. One has to rely on the grid with no control of power generation source
Great added analysis, Charles. It's a great review but it's the mathematics that was lacking. ICEs still offer better value for money...but not for long.

How many people drive to shags abruptly daily? How many Prado owners drive off-road even 3 times a month? I believe with more exposure to these EVs we will come to understand them better, we are also blessed with a lot of sunshine all year round and just as we install solar power to houses, we could install solar for charging the car and though we will have a high set-up cost we will have a charging system with benefits that are higher than the cost as currently solar has a guarantee of about 30yrs service.
