    Is this exercise meant to help with octave displacements in bebop lines? In that case it’d be good to take it start from each note of the chord I think.

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  2 года назад +93

      I'm just using part of the melodic line of Donna Lee and transposing it throughout form over the appropriate chords.

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  2 года назад +95

      the purpose of these exercises is to ingrain bebop language using bebop melodies.

      Also you don’t have to always start every note on the root, in this exercise every chord is started with tonic chord tones

      @@TheBlackTrumpeter Well I'm firstly a vocalist and I love Big Band music. The commanding sound of the trumpet captivated my interest. But one thing I have learned, it is a selfish instrument. You need to invest a lot of time to perfect your technique.

      @@CamilleJack do you have experience with any other instruments ? regardless, go for it if you have the money dude, it takes a while to get going on trumpet ( to learn good embrouchure, to be able to play in multiple octaves, and memorize all the names of the fingerings in every scale and alot more), but once you get going its a really fun instrument and i find it quite easy to learn on. im a saxophonist and having basically 6 fingerings makes the technical aspect of playing stuff pretty easy for me, you just gotta practice your mind to know how to improvise, i am not a trumpeter so some stuff i said may be very much false but im just saying from experience, go for it dude its really fun

    Bro, as a middle school trumpet player:
    Who the heck are your low notes so clean, ALL YOU NOTES!? Mine sound like an explosion

    • @HeckuvaMedusa8
      @HeckuvaMedusa8 7 месяцев назад

      Play a low C on the trumpet, then play it on just your mouthpiece. Then, on the trumpet, play a low C, then switch to a low B, then switch back to a low C, slurring all three notes. Do the same thing on your mouthpiece. Repeat this exercise chromatically until you get to the bottom of the horn.
      With this you’re basically working a bunch of great skills in one exercise. You’re working on your ear by using the mouthpiece, which is gonna help you get notes both down low and up high to speak easier. You’re gonna work on your chops by getting a lot of long tones in, especially with playing at the lowest notes on your instrument, which is gonna help your range and tone.
      If you want one thing to work on in your trumpet playing to get better the fastest, it’s gonna be relieving tension. Tension, physical and mental, is the root of all evils in trumpet playing. Playing low at a gentle volume can wonders for your playing in the long run.

    In the field of jazz is good to practice the way you intend to play. Is nice to see you were bright enough to use inversions and scale patterns you got from the melody your next step should be trying to create longer phrases also analyze Bird’s solo see how one thing leads to the next. • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  Год назад +1

      The added notes after the A half note was just something I heard so clearly I had to play them despite the written exercise. The breath I took was out of necessity…probably because I added notes to the exercise. It wasn’t a test but good attention to detail! 👍🏾

    • @xyz.ijk.
      @xyz.ijk. Год назад

      @@TheBlackTrumpeter I agree -- the three note add could be beautiful in any of the riffs (or all of them) -- but I particularly liked that it was just the one time because it stood out as a "feel-o-the-moment" and accentuated the pattern without breaking it. Just a momentary "here I am -- don't get too comfortable in the pattern, pay attention to the feel" ... I enjoyed it. Same for the breath ... it didn't break anything, just added a bit of humanity to the thread. I appreciate the time you give us with these. I played all the brass, started with T-bone, had a talent for the mechanics and the embouchures, but ... life gets in the way. Not sure how much jazz talent I had though. Thank you for making these for us to learn from (and to enjoy).

    • @TheBlackTrumpeter
      @TheBlackTrumpeter  11 месяцев назад

      I extend the dominant area by treating the C-7 as F7 so there’s 2 measures of F7 instead of 1 measure. The reason why the D is flattened is because I’m continuing the same altered pattern over all dominant chords.

      A lot of times if you try to do something exactly the same as someone else you'll be uncomfortable, at least when it comes to playing. I find that the body is pretty good at finding what's best for you as you grow and evolve as a player. He may not have always held it that way, but one day he did and it felt better so he stuck with it. It may look weird to us, but clearly it isn't compromising his ability, so like he said, looks can be deceiving.
