I just picked up the trumpet again--something I really haven't touched in about 30 years. So glad I found your videos; you do an excellent job turning theory in practice.
Wow!! I just became "Unstuck" on something that I've been doing for a longtime. Its always great to get another perspective on technique. Thanks for the valuable lesson.
That's great! I didn't learn that stuff until 2 years into my undergrad program! lol Glad i could help you out with relating scales to chord symbols :-)
Bro. I've been playing most of my life and I put it down for a minute but now I'm picking it back up. I felt like I was stuck in a loop. Tone and range come naturally, but creativity is lacking. I subscribed. I believe your lessons will help me reach new heights with my music.
Thanks for a great video, BT. I'm an experienced player, but this was still helpful to me, especially the routine of playing all the scales four ways (up, down, then up/down and down/up). This is a great way to get new tunes under your belt. yeah, the harmonic minor on the dimished chord! I was wondering what to do with this scale; now I know. Mega thanks.
Hi, i'am writing you from France, the south of France, near to the Spanish border and the town of PERPIGNAN. With my poor English, i'm not sure that i understand all off your explanations, but it is so clearly that i think i do! Wonderful work, i thank you so much to communicate this to us. It help's us so much to play the Blues!
I am pro saxophone player (supposed to be hah), but I had surgery and haven’t touched my horn for 2 years and now your videos helping me to get in good shape! Playing along with your videos it’s like playing with some friend, really inspiring videos! Thanks so much!!!
thank you for your inspiring video sometimes i realize that i need some more trumpet lesson and exercises like this video its help me of my progression and to improve my trumpet scale thank you so much God Bless you sir
So glad I found this site. Great info and presented in an understandable manner. Out of all the trumpet sites out there I think this is just what I needed. I am 72 years young and play in a community jazz band. I started playing in grade school up through high school and packed the horn away until about 10 years ago. So now I'm in a mad rush to get better with whatever amount of time I have left. Thanks for being their.
Ron Brown So glad you found this site! I have a lot in a store for this year. I would love to know exactly what you need help with so I can make better videos. Would you be willing to take my 2 minute survey? Here’s the link to the survey bit.ly/2AGytd9
Thank you - have been away from trumpet and looking for something to get me back into it, this lesson is great, I can start back at the basics with the root note exercises and build day by day. Will be back for more Sensei!
Damyon Hardy nice! I’m starting a trumpet masterclass livestream on this channel where I give trumpeters some tips based on what they play. The first masterclass event is today at 3pm CST. You should check it out🙂
Top man! Brilliant tutorial in which you combine theory and practice extremely well, which makes it so easy to follow and understand. Thanks very much BT, from a classical trumpet player who is a bit long in the tooth but always wanted to foray into the blues.
Great approach - thanks for the excellent video -going to start doing this. The difficulty I will probably run into is selecting the right scale on progressions.
This video is fabulous! it is pushing me to learn and practice stuff that was all loose, too bad we can't click 'Like' a thousand times, thank you very much!!!!!! (watching on repeat by sections now)
Thanks. I just picked up the trumpet a few months ago since 6th grade 1966, 67. I think I can get a lot from your videos but I don’t have the endurance yet.
Your instructional delivery is easy to follow, and actually encourages those of us who thought these days were behind us to pick up our instruments again. I plan to practice at least 5x/week from here on out!@@TheBlackTrumpeter
Man - I just stumbled across this video. Excellent stuff! - I have always know its about the scales, but its easy to feel that scales are not the most fun to practice. Also thanks for having the ability to download these exercises. Thanks again!

Liked and subbed, getting back into trumpet after over 20 years, I really miss trumpet and I’m starting back this is great since I actually forgot most of my fingerings :(. Thanks so much please make more of these where you show the notes and fingerings. Like this ;-)). 👍🏼
Just want to thank you for all your brilliant vids. During lockdown they are really helping me get back into trumpet. Though I am really grateful for what you have already done !!

Love your videos. I'm an old man that can't play piano due to condition in my hands. After some research, I found out that the trumpet is the only instrument that my bum hands would be no problem... was trying to learn recorder, which i have, but the one I like has holes spread too widely, and if I had too purchase a special one the price (for people with bum hands) would be really high. The recorder is much less offensive than a trumpet. for neighbors.. but the bottom line, I like the trumpet way more. I can put a mute on the trumpet, and, working from home, I could possibly pick up practice times when the neighbors are not there. On the other hand, the recorder is much easier, and I used to play a little saxophone and even recorder when I was a child. I played a trombone for a year, too, when I was a teenager, but didn't get much ahead with that. True, I'm much more patient now and I know much more how to practice, but I'm also an old man. Aslo, as I said, the trumpet price is probably the lowest of all instruments I like, like saxophone (not even comparable). And my hands shouldn't be a problem at all ( with the trumpet). But it is difficult. Just saying. And like jazz. The trumpet I've thought about getting is Jean Paul TR-430 ... And I love your practice exercises, that's what help me on piano. A lot.

I can only say thank you for putting this simple teaching out there for all to see. I've been a trumpet player for a good while now and should be a whole lot better than I am to say I have been playing this long. I look forward to implementing these exercises into my practice times. I wish I would have found out about these exercises back in my days of school band. I would like to also ask you a question as well. I know that I began playing my cornet with the basic 7C mouth piece however in my quest for a greater range I later acquired other mouth pieces. I know there is a slight difference in the tone with each one, but as I have gotten better through the years, the difference and my range isn't near as noticeable as it was before. Is there ever a time when a different sized mouth piece is recommended? Or does it depend on the musician?
You’re welcome! Don’t worry about matching playing experience with playing ability. You can still be as good as you wanna be but it’s about process man. Having fun with the process and grind of playing and practicing the trumpet will make you a better player.
To answer your question...for me, using a different mouthpieces is recommended whenever I’m playing a lead trumpet gig to make the high register easier and more efficient. So for me it depends on the gig. If I play a lead gig a play one MP...on a classical or small group setting where I need a darker/broader sound I play another MP. It does depend on the musician however...this is what I do and it works for me because I play in a variety of situations and genres
Alonso Pareja thanks! Trying to figure out how I can keep a consistent schedule of new content each week. Right now I’m working on a follow up video on this F Blues video. This is gonna be part of a series. I’m thinking maybe 3 or 4 part series
It be nice to see your fingers position, specially for a person like me that just starting to learn how to read. I am 68 year old, only have one arm. It makes it little harder but not impossible.
@@TheBlackTrumpeter I will watch it. The wife asked me to get her some breakfast. That be nice cause I be able to correct my mistake. Thanks and a Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Great video but it was gonna bug me if I didnt say anything. The chord you have labeled as a C#o7 youre actually playing a Bbo7 third inversion arpegio over. However I still think it works well and I like the added C# esspecially in the scale exercise descending. I really like the video though and these are very good exersizes for players who are just starting to figure out 12 bar blues. Keep up the good work.
Glad you enjoy the video! Fully diminished 7th chords are interesting. Since it entirely made up of Minor 3rd intervals the sound and bass notes are interchangeable. What really determines whether it’s a Bbo7 or C#/Dbo7 is the bass note or name of the chord. In the blues progression, usually that 6th bar is substituted with a #4 diminished chord. So in a G blues that bar will be C#o7 because C is the 4...C# would be the raised or sharp (#) 4.
Hey Aaron: I find that I jump around too much with my practice routine. I have over 70 books which include, techniques, improvising, classical training, lots of play along, our big band music and jazz combo music, etc. I would like a structured program so that I know exactly what to do every day. Thanks Ron
I really like the way of the approach of how to use simple ideas progressively to more complex blues vocabulary. I'm a guitar player and I just discovered your lessons today. I like the single line armonic soloing of the trumpet (Miles, Lee Morgan, Hubbard, Clark Terry) and is something good to learn new ideas from good musicians. Greetings from Spain and God bless you!
Thanks for the video - I bought the PDF too. I have a question about keys. Having worked out it's called "F Blues" beacuse that's the concert pitch equivalent of what we're playing, how do I know which pentatonic scale to use for improvisation? Can I always use Bb major pentatonic to improvise on a G blues (F concert) or does it vary from one tune to another?
Elin Öberg thank you for watching and enjoying it! I also created a similar video for the Bb Blues Progression ruclips.net/video/SXhBsqrONDw/видео.html
Sup man! Currently I'm about half way though middle school and I've been preforming a lot of band music for school. I play the cornet, not the trumpet. It makes it a little harder for jazz, but overall still nice. My band music wasn't hard enough for me, so I decided to start on jazz. This video has helped my a lot and I've been replaying several times a day to ingrain the scales for memory. Thanks so much man! How long have you been playing trumpet?
Hey, nice of you to respond. I have been playing for only months. It is a late addition. I come from the piano and spent a few years playing sax and clarinet. I just find the workflow of this lesson exceptionally good and exceptionally clear. In fact, I am using this lesson to practice clarinet as well. I find your musical pedagogy work to be some of the best around. Congratulations and thank you.
Way to break it down. Great teaching style. It would be cool if you would have added a section of you improvising over the progression. All good. Thanks for sharing bargain.
Tim Curry Thank you 😄I was going back and forth with myself whether to add a demo of me improvising. I decided not to because I didn't want to give the idea that this was a "how to Improvise" type of video. This is the prep work I like to do before I start improvising. Don't worry though. A "how to Improvise" type of video is coming soon. I'll add a demo of me improvising then 👍🏾
The Black Trumpeter Yeah man. Looking forward to it. By the way can you do a video on Jazz articulation and tongue patterns over jazz lines? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that.
EXCELLENT Teaching style! Finally found some real help on the Internet. Maybe you could post a video about basic noodling around in a basic jazz progression? Please assume that most of us tuning-in to your videos are starting jazz / blues playing from scratch and don't know anything. Teaching on a 6th grade level would really help most of us. Thanks!
George Drifter thank you! Glad you found this really helpful. Keep videos at a overall beginner level? I can do that for sure! You might like my recent video if you haven’t checked it out already. Let me know what you think. ruclips.net/video/ThpchVDDrbc/видео.html
These are awesome videos, I'm learning lots of useful information from them! I also have a question, whenever I play, usually starting at middle C, my neck starts to puff up and sometimes feels uncomfortable. Do you have any tips on what I should do about this? Thanks!
Giovani Gutierrez Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. 😄👍🏾 My neck puffs out when I play too but it doesn't cause an uncomfortable feeling or tension. These might be the causes... 1️⃣You might be either engaging the valsalva maneuver (the action we do during a bowel movement) while you're playing the trumpet...not good Or... 2️⃣you might be closing off your throat while you play. In either case here's a tip to know if you have tension in your body..... when you play those notes above fourth space C. (try this on long tones)..immediately take the horn off your face and try to say your name. You'll know right away if you have any tension in your chest or neck because you'll sound like someone is choking you when you go to say your name. If you're free of tension then when you take the horn off your face in the middle of playing or (immediately after playing a note) you'll sound normal like you're having a conversation. Or.....3️⃣ You might have to clean your horn and/or mouthpiece. The crud build up makes the lead pipe smaller and causes unnecessary back pressure. Hope this helps!
I’m a teacher (not music) and an 8 year trumpet student. As someone who understands education and know which end of the horn to blow out of, you are an excellent teacher. This is a wonderful step by step intro to the blues that I wish I’d have seen 8 years ago! Ima start it now!
Amazing. I just picked up the trunpet after not touching it for 5 years. I'm working on getting my range back up to scratch before I take on other scales. Is that a good idea? Or are there other things that I should be trying? Thanks :)
Working on scales is cool but learning new melodies is cooler. Have fun learning at least one new melody by ear every week. Increase your range slowly. Try not to be in a rush because bad habits can form if we don’t have patience.
HKID_ H I'll shout you out ONLY if you video record yourself playing exactly what you had to play for your test and (if possible) show me the grade you received as proof. Upload that video to RUclips as an unlisted video and DM me the link either in Instagram or Facebook. Deal?
Hey y'all trumpeters I'm a bassists jazz freshman and recently I thought to myself that Imma get myself one of them horns you people blow, it's such a beautiful instrument. Any tips on buying a low-price trumpet?
Do you have a video or a link to a resource that explains Why? I understand these chord progressions and scales sound bluesy. But what is the reasoning and logic behind the particular chords and scales. Eg Why is it Myxolidian scales, dorians, scales and dominant chord progressions? Is there someone that can point me in the right direction to learn the Why for this stuff?
Yes pretty much. This is probably a basic step I’ve missed in my learning but For example why is a C# involved as a chord/scale when it’s not a note involved in F major or F blues scale? What do I have to study to learn the logic behind the appearance/placement of the chords? In a solo playing example I would’ve never thought to play a C# anywhere near a F scale. But watching this and giving it a go It makes so much musical sense and sounds good
I just picked up the trumpet again--something I really haven't touched in about 30 years. So glad I found your videos; you do an excellent job turning theory in practice.

Did you watch the entire video? Past the “playing root notes” section? I explicitly show my fingers for every exercise.
@@TheBlackTrumpeter
I will watch it. The wife asked me to get her some breakfast. That be nice cause I be able to correct my mistake. Thanks and a Merry Christmas to you and your family.
No problem. 🙂 Merry Christmas
Great, thank you so much!. If we knows these well, it's easier for improv! You have a new subscriber!
Great video man. Good for all instruments not just trumpet!!
Jamsville thanks man! It sure is. Just wanted to cater to the range and the transposition of all us Bb instruments.
Great stuff, thank you for posting.
Glad you enjoyed it
Love your tone, it’s sweet and sultry, It’s dope bro
World Keeps Turning thanks bro! I appreciate the kind words. How’d you find this video?
The Black Trumpeter Suggested while watching my buddy’s videos
Hey Aaron:
I find that I jump around too much with my practice routine. I have over 70 books which include, techniques, improvising, classical training, lots of play along, our big band music and jazz combo music, etc. I would like a structured program so that I know exactly what to do every day.
Thanks
Ron
Ron Brown Sounds like a good idea😄 what would you want to be able to do after you finish that program?
EXCELENTE TECNICA DE ENSEÑANZA UN BUEN MAESTRO GRACIAS
Great lesson, my friend. Thanks for sharing! :)
Pedro Aguilar thanks for watching! How did you find this video? 🙂
You're a great teacher!
Zennon Szabo thank you! 😄
Great teacher, very good, Paulo Cezar Brasil
Thanks you so much Paulo! Should I do Bb exercises too?
Very good trumpet man!!! Brasil,Rio de Janeiro.
This video is gold ❤
Great lesson, thank you!!
Elin Öberg thank you for watching and enjoying it! I also created a similar video for the Bb Blues Progression ruclips.net/video/SXhBsqrONDw/видео.html
Genial!!! Gracias amigo!!!
This is amazing! Are there play along tracks for the rest of the keys?
Thank you! Which key should I do next?
@@TheBlackTrumpeter All of them ...PLEASE :)
Brilliant. Abolustely a brilliant lesson. Thanks.
Thank you! How long have you been playing?
Hey, nice of you to respond. I have been playing for only months. It is a late addition. I come from the piano and spent a few years playing sax and clarinet. I just find the workflow of this lesson exceptionally good and exceptionally clear. In fact, I am using this lesson to practice clarinet as well. I find your musical pedagogy work to be some of the best around. Congratulations and thank you.
thanks from Greek . Epiro my teacher
This is fantastic. TY!
Tim Curry yeah! that's a great idea 💡Thanks for the suggestion! I'll see what I can come up with
ok very good!bay ,bay.
Muy muy muy bien, gracias!! ☮️
Nice way of breaking it down bro!
My neck puffs out when I play too but it doesn't cause an uncomfortable feeling or tension.
These might be the causes...
1️⃣You might be either engaging the valsalva maneuver (the action we do during a bowel movement) while you're playing the trumpet...not good
Or...
Or.....3️⃣
You might have to clean your horn and/or mouthpiece. The crud build up makes the lead pipe smaller and causes unnecessary back pressure.
Hope this helps!
The Black Trumpeter Aw
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!!
Duane, you're welcome! What else should I cover in my videos?
Aaron this is great! Keep up the great work.
Thanks Clarence! Will do. Figuring out a way to have new content on a weekly basis.
Yow man, thanks a lot. Stay safe with your family
Thank you Reim Estella !😄🙏🏾
I’m a teacher (not music) and an 8 year trumpet student. As someone who understands education and know which end of the horn to blow out of, you are an excellent teacher.
This is a wonderful step by step intro to the blues that I wish I’d have seen 8 years ago! Ima start it now!
I like how you open with the lesson “goals”.
EXCELLENT Teaching style!
This vid makes me smile , I learn of this
Ewout Geentriangeldus comments like this make me smile 😄👍🏾
Thank you soo much...for this post
INCREDIBLE.
Thanks I got A+ on my TEST!!
Ayyyyyyyyeeeeeee!!!!!😄😄😄😄👍🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥🙅🏾♂️🕺🏽🕺🏽congrats 🎉
What did you have to do for your test? How did this video help you?
The Black Trumpeter we had to play all f blue notes as a pre test and I got a a plus can I get a shout out next video Plz
HKID_ H I'll shout you out ONLY if you video record yourself playing exactly what you had to play for your test and (if possible) show me the grade you received as proof.
Upload that video to RUclips as an unlisted video and DM me the link either in Instagram or Facebook.
Deal?
The Black Trumpeter I don't have Facebook or intagram I'm 12

Very well done video! Thanks for the help!
Rex Deeps thank YOU for watching! Should I create a Concert Bb Blues version as well? What do you think?
@@TheBlackTrumpeter I'd love a Bflat blues video! I'm a high school trumpet player and I've been trying to improve my ear for blues lately.
Gold. Thanks man rad lesson
You’re welcome!
Boa escala Bom exercício valeu meu irmão...
Hey y'all trumpeters I'm a bassists jazz freshman and recently I thought to myself that Imma get myself one of them horns you people blow, it's such a beautiful instrument. Any tips on buying a low-price trumpet?
Ray Rhythm haha Nice! What’s your budget?
The Black Trumpeter around $200-250
Good morning sir.. How do i apply them to the song
Are you trying to understand why these are the “correct” scales to play?
Yes pretty much. This is probably a basic step I’ve missed in my learning but For example why is a C# involved as a chord/scale when it’s not a note involved in F major or F blues scale? What do I have to study to learn the logic behind the appearance/placement of the chords?
In a solo playing example I would’ve never thought to play a C# anywhere near a F scale. But watching this and giving it a go It makes so much musical sense and sounds good
Muy bueno amigo!!! Muy didactico!!!
This is great! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
