Jamie Carragher finally got his laptop working (with the help of his daughter!) and jumped onto a video call with Geoff Shreeves to discuss Gary Neville's management career, the reasons he's avoided going into coaching and Thierry Henry's time in charge of Monaco and Montreal.

You know what we need in these times? A long Neville + Carragher podcast series. Just the two of them without a presenter and have them talk for more than an hour. They can talk about all kinds of things. Their careers, Gary's Valencia days, different managers they trained under, specific matches they played, do deep dives into styles of different managers. The possibilities are endless.
poor Geoff lmao, you've shafted him here.
“Different mangers they trained under” hah you surely only mean Carragher, as he’s the only one of the two that actually had different managerS
@@mfjosh6422 England manager so technically he's played under more than one
Boring
Deepy Ram hahaha fair play
That's a great point about Thierry Henry and glad to hear Carragher being so honest about it too!
Henry's problem was that he expected the players to be as good as him. He was very demanding and the players rebelled. Most top players do not make good managers. Fergie, Klopp, Wenger, Mourinho.....all very average players, but top managers
@@mediacenterman8583
Plenty of successful managers who were former top players.
Some just have it others doesn't.
@@mediacenterman8583 seems the common thing to say these days but it's not true.
Zidane, ancelotti, guardiola, Cruyff, rijkaard, conte, dalglish...the list is endless of former world class players who turn world class managers
@@connorf4035 fair point
people need to drop the notion that great players should make great managers. Both Carra and Gary were top players in their days, no doubt. but being a manager is about having a holistic and strategic vision, being continually schooled on tactics, man-management/motivation, conflict management, scouting, analyses, dealing with the media, press, owners and club board, etc. It takes a different kind of personality to be a manager, and it's good that both Carra and Gary are saying they aren't cut out for it. It shows a different insight that few fans haven't seen before.
Carragher could definitely have done reasonably well as a manager.
@@pluckychicken7656 at Liverpool, probably.
If Carra went to Valencia he probably would have been sacked after 3 months too
I'd disagree about the 'great players' part.
After listening to carra the last few weeks he sounds like a lazy player and now I understand why he sucked a lot
@@gethcreator751 both won trophies and were some of the best in their positions.
@@wrightplacewrighttime.5834 I know but listening to carra over the last few weeks he makes himself sound like a lazy coward too afraid to try anything
In these times of lockdown/Covid-19 on the news 24/7, these conversations with Jamie, Geoff and Gary are fantastic. Candid, honest and real. Keep it up gentlemen, you are giving a lot of people (including me) a conversation to look forward to between work and family life. Thank you.

Jamie “I’m not trying to get the garden in” Carragher
Carra is right. Managers like Poch, Dyche, Howe, Big Sam and many others have massively over-achieved but won't get due credit.
You try to do what howe has at Bournemouth on a shoestring budget with a capacity of about 20,000.
I'm nota Bournemouth fan but have some respect. Taking a team that was about to fold up the divisions is not over achieving it's a miracle and no stroke of luck.
Howe will fulfill his potential when he outgrows the cherries.
Why would he leave when he is still young has a safety net with the chairman who he gets on with very well.
@@jao7719 Eh? "have some respect"? I just praised him, said he massively over-achieved lol
Ja O
They don’t have a shoe string budget, lmao if you stay up in the prem you get 100’s of millions from the TV deal.
They have wasted so much money on average players from Liverpool etc.
They get credit every other week, what are you on about? when have you ever heard any of those guys are doing bad jobs?
Appreciate what Jamie said about his particular personal motives and drives for getting into football in the first place, like the comment about "fear of failure driving [him] on". It's always exciting to hear about the psychology of individual players.
I don't know if this makes sense, but IMHO I believe that players who are done (mentally) by the time they finish their playing careers (physically) will not want nor need to enter into management, but players who end their playing days (physically) without being done (mentally i.e. they could and would have carried on but for the physical restrictions) are more prone to enter the field of management. They still have that urge/drive. Most people are mentally done before they're physically done, for footballers who become managers, I feel the reverse is true.
Neville looks like Emery in the thumbnail.

Top pundits Gary and Jamie.
Gary said himself the other day he took it for granted but he realises now to never take it for granted.

All class from Carragher. Didn’t beat around the bush about fellow pundits but wasn’t rude or insulting. Great listen!
Did they both put on their kids tee-shirts as a thank you ?
Carra and Gnev are the best pundits on tv, why give that up to be managers of average teams. MNF wouldn't be the same without them....
nor would their bank balances ;)
Carra does a lot of talking but says very little. His punditry sucks imo
Ali H false premier league managers make so much more than pundits are you crazy
Carra and Gnev are arrogant, egotistical, ignorant assholes;
arrogant, egotistical, ignorant assholes don't make good managers.

there's living with the consequences of your decisions.

collins mugodo best I’ve seen him in a long time. Fair play.
i love how jeff has sneaked his carra book in the background
And conveniently Souness also.ridiculous lol
Kiss ass
Carragher is only saying this because he couldn’t control a heated dressing room he would probably start telling jokes in the middle of it
It's because none of his players would understand what he's saying
Or gob on them!
Nah I think the complete opposite and he’s said it himself multiple times. He’s too straight forward and real with people. If you’re not pulling your weight he’ll tell you how it is. He can’t deal with pre-Madonna’s. He takes football very seriously and thinks everyone should give their all for the team/club. He couldn’t deal with personalities like Neymar or Balotelli.
😂😂😂the casually placed autobiographies of Carragher Souness and Smith 😂😂😂
Carra usually so quick with the digs @ G Nev he missed the chance to comment on his book being on show wonder if he will tweet it out
Good talk
lovely framed family photo over Carra's left shoulder there...

Jamie's got a sickass house and the only place he can charge his phone and talk on skype at the same time is the kitchen. This drives me nuts.
Good quarantine content
it is something to say about someones character who could criticise other managers but could not be bothered to go into it and experience it first hand.
if you dont like punditry dont turn off after the match and dont give your opinions to your friends either if you dont think you can criticise someones performance if youve not managed, presumably the same applies to playing
Thank god Jeffs mic quality isn’t dreadful his time

Would love to know what managers he found hopeless pundits at 8:29
Gary defo spoke him out of it 😂🤣
Managers need to be good at reading people, getting in their heads and understanding how they think. You have to manipulate younger men into wanting to give their best for you, to buy into your ideas. Some are good at this, Ferguson was the master and Pep is now, his players hang on his every word. Clearly Neville at Valencia the players never took him seriously.
Lol the resolution is terrible.
😂😂😂 Technology, I can imagine Carragher getting ‘Scouser angry cause he can’t get it started’ 🤨😂
Cheers Geoff
Quick comment on the title. So true for footballers who have made enough money to not need to have a managerial job afterwards. So many former top players have made fools of themselves as managers, while they could've just been relaxing as pundits or doing other things outside football.
Hopefully Roy Keane or Souness are on this next. Please ⚽️👍
Couldn't imagine either of them doing this without smashing the lap top
Its such a relief to hear a former top sportsman admitting that hes not into management. So what. In todays society, its such a taboo to say that there are things in this world youre no good at. Its not about doing what other people think is better, its about doing what feels right for you and what youre good at.
No it's not a taboo, gtfoh. Everyone already knows these ex footballer pundits don't have what it takes to be managers. It's not news.
All in favour of sky to broadcast prem games from 1992 till now on their channels and youube

Gary Neville: "Valverde toyed with me like puppet"
Yeah that's when you know you're gonna get sacked, when Valverde does that to you.
Hamza Orakzai without the facade of having to play “The Barca Way” and having to work with a squad that’s so poorly constructed and lopsided, Valverde is a hell of a manager. Don’t allow a poor fit of club/manager form your overall opinion of his quality
Probably not a bad manager. More a case of expectations so high at Barcelona following Enrique, Guardiola, and rickard. (can't spell it)
@@rickybeans8504 Rijkaard
He literally won them the league in both his full seasons lol
I am a barca fan and while we hated valverde for his style of play and the lack of a plan b when the team were pressed hard, he's a good manager. He did win us 2 league titles in his years in charge of the club management
Carragher doesn't need to go into football management. He's already getting a cushy wage packet at sky for being a pundit.
Yeah he took the easy route. I wonder in 10 years will he regret it, look at all the young former players who are now managers ala lamps, arteta, terry, giggs, gerrard, even Rooney is getting involved. Jamie is still young man, is his plan to be a pundit for 25 years? At least Gary and shearer took a stab at it before deciding it wasn’t for them.
patluff to be fair it’s not worth hassle it brings
Exactly, and he's not very ambitious, never won much in his career, so punditry is good.
What manager is to much stress, pundit is much better job as you can’t lose it, Neville is such good pundit he would always be allowed back but if you went for manager job and sacked after 6 months you don’t have anything
Dan Edwards money is not comparable. It’s hard to leave the game and many of the top players are ambitious. Ego is big thing, being a coach is being centre of attention which many performers enjoy. Also you can always become a pundit after you’ve been sacked with a huge payoff. Look at Tim Sherwood for instance.
Geoff shreeves is awesome. Replace Martin Tyler with him. More Geoff please!
I hope you come to manage my team one day janie

Some managers don’t make good pundits but being a manager is 1000x harder.
Britain produced some legendary english and scottish managers in the past. Fergie was the last one. Where are the next generation of english and scottish managers gonna come from?
I understand what he means.
Coaching isn't an easy thing.
"Some of them are hopeless" 😂
For some reason I always used to think Carra wound be Steven Gerrard's assistant.
Jamie needs to put respect on Mou
Carras airpods about to fall out any minute @27:05
He's right. It's not worth the hassle, if you have millions in the bank. But look at people like Sam Allardyce, who was not wealthy, who started off managing semi pro/low level teams, but worked his way up to become a multi millionaire premiership manager. I'm sure he'd say it is worth the hassle
I'm a liverpool fan and Carragher did I sterling job for the club..but @8.45 comparing managing a football club against punditry...?? Really??
It is if you know what you are doing.
They haven't mentioned the main reason people go into management because they love football!
why do your coaching badges carra if you don't wanna be a manager?
Geoff Shreeves CEO of is there a part of you
The difference between Jamie and Gary is... Gary was used to winning... all he wanted to do was win regardless of which club they manage or whether it's realistic... While Jamie? probably be a better manager as he's used to not winning.
Jamie Carragher what a legend 👊💯
Too right top class charver the lad
In other words, "I get paid millions to criticize managers, why would I want to actually be a manager ? "
Stevie G is doing okay.
he makes a really good point. its a lot of stress and theres a high probability to fail. Life is more than that. carragher is happy and making good money at sky. why spoil it
"Even the running down the line. That's not the liverpool way of doing things"
Didnt klopp run on the pitch when they scored against Everton last season?
Seeing Jeff without a suit is weird🤣
When Gerrard is Liverpool manager and McAllister retires Carragher takes his place as assistant manager calling it now
No.
TAKEN. TAKEN. TAKEN over my life.
There’s nothing Henry hasn’t done? Has he won EFL league one ?
Not worth the hassle? Tell that to Brian Clough, Pep, Mourinho, Wenger, Cruyff..it's a sacrifice. If you can't do it then it is what it is nothing to be ashamed of
He's giving his opinion tho? So he's saying for him he doesn't feel it's worth the hassle he even says he doesn't know if he's cut out for it
