I listen to this song on the regular. And I think about its lyrics a lot. I don’t think there was a polarized reaction to it, not that I’m aware. I do know RM was hesitant in writing his verses and he and Agust D talked about whether it was okay for them to talk about this because of their wealth and status but they they ultimately agreed it was their honest opinions, observations, and this is how they feel.

    • @iizouu
      @iizouu 3 года назад +101

I think the song would've come off a lot differently, if they hadn't already lived on the other end of the spectrum in terms of their wealth and status. for a while, yoongi really was just a laborer trying to hold onto a dream in a capitalistic society. like you (they) said, it's honesty, not pretension.
I don't remember who it was, might've been keanu reeves or some other male actor. but he said that when he was poor & talked about the evils of capitalism, he was called lazy- then when he got rich & talked about capitalism, he was called a hypocrite. I think it's a topic that some people just don't want to accept. luckily it seems like this song dodged a lot of those sorts of comments, maybe because it hasn't really reached all the locals lol.

Yoongi talked about asking Joon about writing this song and Joon was hesitant bc of their position now but I’m glad he joined him in the project. I think we love hearing about how they see the world from their place

That entire mixtape is absolutely amazing! Actually all of the mixtapes are fantastic! The only thing that Bang PD told them when they created BTS was that the songs all had to tell their stories. And the boys stick with this idea even in their solo stuff. Suga has never been shy about saying what they think. It's one of the reasons Army loves them so much. They've done it in a ton of other songs as well. I would suggest you do all of the mixtapes from the rapline if possible. Suga and RM each have 2 out and J-Hope has one. I think the reaction to this song is one of huge respect and love. BTS have a long tradition of kick ass political songs like Baepsae, Not Today & RM/Wale’s Change. I always think that they are very clear-eyed about the world and how to bring about some change. I believe they recognize that success -financially and otherwise- brings power. Yoongi said one day that he wanted to be the most influential artist in the world. We ARMY are the underdogs of the world that BTS called out in Not Today. Just think about that opening. NamJoon said: All the underdogs of the world!! A day may come when we lose, but it is not today. Today we fight!

5:55 There was no response from the public, obviously. Media always writes articles about new hair color, "rapid" fans, stupid rumors, and never about serious stuff. That's why a lot of people who know bts only from media doesn't really know a thing about their music, which is the most important to a musician. E.g. in one interview bts said they feel like aliens in the USA, that they always felt like outsiders and never welcomed into the US' music industry even after having sold out multiple stadiums across the whole country and the world. And this was huuge, I mean this was smth media should've scream about but there was not even a single comment about it, so if we cant get articles about serious stuff like that one, we will never get anything about their music, in which bts critisize society and industry a lot

*Just to comment on the lines in the lyrics about “everything in dust” and “everything in lust”*
Most Asian countries have a substantial population of Buddhist believers, and one Buddhist teaching that’s become a common colloquialism to some Asian communities are the sayings: “everything in dust” and “everything in lust”
So basically both those lines mean to question how a person is able to have a correct view of the world if one mind is clouded by lust, hatred, and ignorance.
In many Buddhism influenced Asian cultures, ‘dust’ is a common reference to the impurities that cloud our mind. These impurities are often referred to as the ‘three poisons’: greed (lust, attachment), anger (hatred, hostility) and delusion (ignorance, confusion, incorrect beliefs).
All three are talked about in this song...they’re freaking genius lyricists

They've never held back when it came to creating music. That's why Yoongi once said that one of the things that made him happy with being a part of this group and company is that he can write and produce whatever he wants. PLS REACT TO WHAT DO YOU THINK BY AGUSTD

  • @jimjimcherie

Yoongi aka Suga/AGUST D is never afraid to speak his mind. There's this phrase that says J-Hope visualizes the world, RM analyzes the world, and Suga critizes the world. I hope you react to the rest of his mixtape, I think you'll enjoy it. I also think you'd enjoy Paradise from their album Love Yourself: Tear.

Actually Agust D didn’t care what people will say about this song because he’s always been vocal about his stand in the social norms. But RM was really hesitant. He thought that people will think he’s being hypocritical talking about capitalism when he’s actually rich. But Agust D just told to say whatever he wants! Agust is definitely the more “I don’t give af” person of the group. And RM is more temperate, he thinks a lot before stating anything.

One thing I feel like never gets acknowledged enough in this song is the music and how it’s absolutely eerie almost like an old school (but modernised) horror soundtrack which is both a banger but also kind of makes one feel uneasy, which reflects the subject matter so well. That capitalism and the state of the world should make you feel uneasy because it’s like a real life horror movie. This song nearly gave me a fucking mental breakdown I loved it so much 🤣 the lyrics!! *chefs kiss*

This is one of my favourite songs off of D-2! I like how Suga and RM put their two different perspectives on this topic in here. You mentioned a few lines sounding similar, and that's because they compared their views on this matter in the pre-hook and I honestly think that was such a great idea (it's my favourite part of the song).
I really liked watching your reaction to this! Can't wait for more 👍

The reason why some of Suga's lyrics looks similar to RM's lyrics at the end is because Suga lyrics were in the form of a question. He asked those questions and RM answered

yall need to watch explanation videos by a korean. Theyre really popular, not only do rapline songs have these kind messages but also BTS songs are meaningful. They rarely talk about love, they speak more about life and struggles.

When Suga's mixtape came out, many people started looking for loopholes to knock him down.
When I saw the translation of all the tracks on the mixtape, I also knew what made people that angry
