This song is basically a satire for those who made fun of him and suga after leaving underground rap. They told them that they weren’t real “rappers”, that they didn’t have skill because they don’t rap fast. So he made this song as a “joke” to show off his skills. Just 9 different flows and no chorus. Also he was dissing the rappers who rap without substance thus the “bibidi babidi” lyrics. RM is known for his wordplay and intricate lyricism. You should def check out more of his solo stuff.

Ye my interpretation of this song was immediatly that he just wanted to show off to certain people that he has the capacity to do it all. No limits to his talent.

At the end of the day, it's not just about showing off their talents (I mean they done it for years already). It's about the things they wanna do.

I never heard that RM was intimidating to battle rap against as a teen. I'm a fan of RM but is this fact? And where can I read about him being so scary good that nobody wanted to battle him.
@@iwubfood1 - the "nobody" was an exaggeration but I have heard he was exceptionally good and easily won, at least most times.
I heard him say he cant do freestyling that much anymore since he said hasnt been doing that in a while but still he got a great skillset and lyricism and that IQ so im sure a lot of people would still be afraid to battle him.

@@iwubfood1 I don't remember exactly where I heard it, someone was narrating about an intimidating young RM (when he went by the name Rauch Randa) it's where him, JHope and Suga was performing predebut. A part of that performance is in the Introduction to BTS where they talked about each member. I think it was on that video where you saw the whole performance. This was long ago but if I can find it I'll post it here.

RM’s rap is no joke! I have listened to this so many times and love it more each time I hear it! The change in cadences is other worldly and he doesn’t even stop to breath!

The bibbiby babbiby verse you heard him say is the joke of him dissing the mumble jumble rappers. Joke is not just "fast rap" with no meaning. RM is the KING of wordplays. He focuses a lot on lyricism, double/triple entendre and flow. He gets his inspiration from 90's hip hop if you wanna check out his first mixtape.*

To explain why RM made this song :
So you probably know that RM and Suga received a lot of flak from the underground K-hip hop community when they signed with an Idol company. In addition to that people would try and shade his rap skills, saying he had no skills and no flow. So he made this song as 'joke' to show off his flow and speed and also shade back on the criticism by pointing out that you can rap as fast as you want but if you're just saying nonsense
then what's the point? Hence there's no hook, just bars after bars and some nonsense words like 'bibbidy bobbidy
In short, RM GENIUS SONGWRITER OF THE CENTURY.
His rap is not only skillful but extremely intelligent. Makes me wish I knew Korean to fully understand all the wordplay and references.
Btw you have to watch the cypher medley. It is a must if you like the rap line. Their stage presence and skills are too notch

RM is known as the lyrical King. It doesn’t matter what type of songs he writes. He has helped many of his bts member in lyrics to their songs and also teach them to be confident to write their own lyrics of what they want to say. I hope you guys get the chance to listen to his mono album cause that is very different but extremely deep. Also the song Sea which is only available if you buy the bts physical album but you can find the lyrics version on yt. That was suppose to be for his mono album but Bang PD asked if he would give it to the group to sing cause it was so beautiful. 💜

theres a lot of korean wordplay that doesnt come through in the translations. the song is called joke because namjoon is basically making a joke out of the underground hiphop scene that has criticised him (and yoongi) for leaving the scene to become idols. a lot of the lyrics are meant to value wordplay, rhyming and so on above meaning to show off his skills while mocking the poor lyric capability of some of these rappers. he essentially mocks and makes fun of how incapable these people are at rapping while those same people are the ones who claim namjoon cant rap cause hes just an idol. its really smart

LOL. You should react to Do You and Awakening by RM (really the whole mixtape), take a breath, then listen to mono, and see/hear the growth in music and lyrics. He doesn't go verbally as hard on mono, but the themes and ideas hit deep. Noah mono is for you!!!!
Just to make it clear once again....As RM has mentioned in a press conference that this song is called joke just because it's a joke itself.....it has no wrong intentions......that's why the song itself is called joke.
Best part personally it’s the fact that he barely took a breathe during this song and he had breathing problems while making this song.
Since BTS has been in a couple American award shows, there has been more and more music artist that want to work with him and BTS as a whole. The artist are starting to see how unique he is, and he is really getting praised for his work, and the talent that he has. It would be awesome if he could work with really good artist and not the ones that think they have talent but really don’t.

Just reminding everyone who forgot: RM ruled the underground rapping scene where he lived from his late middle school years until he was scouted. Suga also had deep ties with producers who saw talent in him from his competing in underground rapping battles. Jhope was in the underground dancing scene that has super close ties with the underground rapping rings and had always admired old school rapping. People who call them out for not being “real rappers” are fools. These boys were real rappers long before they were scouted for BIGHIT.

the thing is, Joke is for purely auditory pleasure, but it does not take away it's amazing lyrics. It's a satirical response to rappers who think that rapping fast is what you have to do to be called "rapper". Joon is a poet that raps.
Also, you can't appreciate or even begin to understand the double and triple entendres just by reading lyrics in genius. There's a whole thread explaining and disecting Joke. I'll try to find it and link it here. Basically Joke has:

I'm going to suggest that when it comes to the rapline's solo stuff you do one thing then the other. Listen to the lyrics, then watch the mv because that is the only way you are going to get the full effect when the rapline is feeling themselves and hitting 5th gear lol! In 2000 RM would have been 6 years old, while Eminem was tearing up the charts. I do know that BTS got tickets, in 2012, to see Eminem in concert at Jamsil Olympic Stadium in Seoul, Korea. RM and Suga have talked about seeing that concert. When Suga first played Jamsil stadium, he reminisced about going to see Eminem in concert. Eminem concert would have been a year before BTS debuted.
This is one of the reasons I appreciate rap more. Bangtan's RAP LINE are over the top! I'm hoping you'd listen to Change It's RM and Wale. It's one of his best collaboration! Thank you for this!

Re-watching joke with you I realized more about RM’s inner motor, like the way his urge to speak speak speak write write write is just how he’s wired. RM back in the days when he still an underground rapper, he was 14 or 15 y.o. many rappers back then acknowledge him and were scared of being diss by him. he is talented. and why he is so different now? that's because RM said he wants to try different raps styles, he wants to try everything.
