This Concerto, which is considered one of the most important of the first half of the 20th century, is a pivotal work in the musician's production. If the percussive style of the First Concerto is still present and gives the work a great vigor of expression, the technical mastery has increased and the formal perfection announces the last creations. As in the Fourth String Quartet, the form is based on the arch structure: the extreme movements are built (with the exception of one motif) around the same thematic material, while the central part serves as a keystone.
Following the example of the baroque concerto, the composer seeks a balance of sound between the soloist and the orchestra. But above all, through the omnipresence of contrapuntal writing and the driving character of rhythm, he places himself under the rule of Bach. Although the piano technique is hardly different from the works of 1926, the presence of Beethoven can be felt in many places behind certain third movements, the obstinate hammering of repeated notes and the astonishing orchestral palette of the keyboard. Despite this dual affiliation, the work remains fundamentally Bartókian in its inspiration and pays a heavy tribute to the scales, rhythms and melodic inflections of folklore. A variety of thematic material and a colorful orchestration make this score more directly accessible to the public.

This is one of the most complicated piano concertos, Andras Schiff said it left the keyboard covered in blood while playing it and even Steven Kovachevich said it was the most difficult piece he had ever played and almost left him paralyzed, It's CRAZY, but I still enjoy the piece, the level of professionalism that a pianist like Géza Anda together with the brilliant direction of Ferenc Fricsay make this piece brilliant, a contrast that I hear with the previous concerto is that here the strings are finally integrated, although it began as the first concerto with a group of winds and percussion.

You are right, besides, I like all 3 Bartok Concerti, in my opinion they are beautiful, and the most difficult music for piano and orchestra, cheers!

I hear that moment 45 years ago on the new vinyle I just bought.
I was paralysed, I couldn't believe the sound of the orchestra. What was this for a magic ?
