I just completed my very first quilt!!! A queen size quilt made with the pinwheel and fence rail pattern. I pieced, quilted it and added the binding. It was a patriotic quilt that I donated to be raffled to benefit the Shriners. My heart was torn to give it away. I put so much time and love into it and.....it was my very first completed quilt. But what better charity to donate it to than one that helps children. Now on to the next one.

This is a tough one to watch. Last week, I decided to make my mom a quilt. Our relationship is rather rocky, currently, more cliff-like. That I decided to follow through with it at all surprises me. Today as I was preparing and piecing, I felt hesitant and even resisted the idea of making her one. It's a lot of work for someone who treats you poorly. Then, I saw this episode and felt less resistance. I may have a lot to forgive her for, but I too recognize that she gave me life and kept me alive into adulthood. Perhaps each stitch will be a chance to forgive and love for me. Maybe someday, when she looks at the quilt, she might want that love and know it could be found.

I understand your resistance--truly. My relationship with my mother was also cliff-like. My recommendation is to go ahead and make one for her, but make it a really simple one, one that won't be too hard to give away. I think you will be glad you did.

Oh my gosh, i'm finishing a quilt my mother started for me about 16 years ago before she passed. These are the colors of my quilt. My Mom didn't get to finish it and she gave it to me and said I would have to finish it. She cut all the pieces by hand and sewed all the blocks but I had to buy the material for the strips to put it together. I am now free motion quilting it. I have never done this before and I have a lot to learn but I think it will turn out just fine. I'm glad I finally got the nerve to finish it. I also made my parents a quilt for their 50th anniversary. I hand quilted it and I now have it after they both passed. Thanks for all your great videos. They helped me finish my very special quilt.

I should have watched your video after work instead of before - now I want to stay home and sew! Last year I made a quilt for my friend who was retiring. I was going to make a small quilt, but it ended up being 90" x 90" with all the pieced borders. Didn't want to give it away, but it was too late to get another gift.... I'm so glad I did. She cried and said no one had ever given her such a wonderful gift (her life story would confirm that), and she told me just the other day she has slept under it every night. She is obviously very quilt worthy!

I watched this video today in a hospital room while my daughter slept. She had brain surgery yesterday to remove a tumor. ( The operation was a success!) Wrapping her up in the hospital bed, was a quilt that I made her a year ago. It was the first big quilt that I had attempted. Looking at the quilt, I see all of the imperfections. They don't matter. What matters is that this quilt is comforting her. Who knew that gift would be so important today!

I was making a row by row quilt for my aunt out of farm fabric (because she liked chickens). When I spray basted it the back of the quilt was not flat. I couldn't un-baste it because the batting was very fragile. So I went ahead and quilted over all the wrinkles in the backing and used it as a practice quilt. My mom loved it and kept begging for it so I let her have it. She keeps it on her chair and uses it every day!

I used to get frustrated if I made a mistake, or the quilt wasn't really square and a friend told me (she taught me to quilt) that no one has ever said there was a mistake, or the quilt wasn't just right. They just say, - what a beautiful quilt. I finally discovered that although I know where every little mistake is (and I am right now picking out some quilting because it wasn't perfect) but not one person ever notices.
My biggest fans are my two young grandsons (7 and 4). They always want a quilt (I take them in my sewing room and they pick whatever fabrics they want) and although their mother continually says no more, I tell her if they want one, they get one. The prerogative of grandmothers :) It makes me happy.

    The "Finally" quilt.
A long, long time ago a young mother was just starting to quilt...... Alas there were several moves and life became busy with full time work, than full time work with a commute, along with single handedly raising two strong willed children :-O
Knitting is taken up, caking is taken up, a few sewing projects squeezed in here and there. Whilst perusing in the bowels of the basement, rummaging through the corner of craft/fabric/? filled totes what does appear? Ohmigosh! She had totally forgotten about the 224 string quilt blocks that she had completed but never assembled (15 years prior)! What was to be done with all those wonderfully thoughtfully 3-6 string quilt blocks?
Well, let me tell you since she FINALLY found them, she FINALLY pieced them together, she FINALLY sandwiched them together, she FINALLY hand tied (waaaay to many seams to quilt) and she FINALLY bound it. FINALY finished and FINALLY she kept it. The first project kept for herself after giving so many away. It just seemed right to her.
I had so much fun remembering the fabrics I used, some from my children's clothes I had made and other quilting/sewing projects from the past. A real trip down memory lane. The discovery got me back on track with the joy of quilting/sewing. My children are grown and have provided me with grandchildren (who have quilts of their own ;0). And the Finally Quilt has been on my bed for 5 years.
Thank you for the wonderful tutorials, I am enjoying each and every one.

Pretty much the same life experience for me, without the commuting, but three children. . . but I'm only just at the stage of finishing the top. I inherited my mother's 1957 top of the range Bernina this year when she died. I had it serviced and it is so beautiful. It brought back so many memories, as she taught me to sew and made all my clothes with it, as did sewing the quilt. . a kind of therapy for my grief think. I had to buy some "look alikes" as many fabrics had been cleared out over the years, but I had stored a good quantity of the originals to meld them in. No internet back then to help, but overall, I am pleased with it. A true scrap quilt, and even contains the fabric from a pregnancy dress I made of my first child, which was probably the last sewing I did. I too am looking forward to the next quilt. So many possibilities!

My quilty confession: I was making a quilt for a friend, was almost done quilting it when I saw one of my piecing seams had come apart :( I slipstitched it as neatly as I could but it was glaringly obvious. I had no idea how to fix it so, once I got done with the quilting, I threaded a hand needle and decide to pick 8 or 9 other spots on the quilt to make short slipstitched rows over various seams that didn't need it. When I presented the quilt, I told her that she is such a free spirit so I decided to quilt her quilt in a new Bohemian style I read about. She loved it, hehe.

I haven't been quilting long enough to have a quilty secret (unless you count watching hours of youtube videos). BUT, my new favorite quilty tool is my walking foot. After I watched this video, I decided to try it on the rail fence quilt I am piecing. Great videos, very informative. I made a quilt for someone which I could not part with. It was only my 2nd quilt and I designed it. The first one was a beginner quilt which I gave to my daughter. My 3rd quilt was for my nephew's wedding quilt, which I did give to him at his bride to be wedding shower, for which I received a standing ovation of young women in their early 20's who loved the quilt...Made me feel really good. I am now finishing my nieces' wedding quilt, which I will give to her after I quilt it....I have two more nearly finished for my granddaughter, and another for my daughter. Two more I made which I have hanging in my house which I can't seem to part with either. Marti Michell pattern blocks of the month....Love your videos...

I love your sense of humor. I also hesitated to make my mother a quilt because she has a dog. I was not going to spend time and money on a fur collector. In the end, I made her two lovely wall quilts she loves. My dad is getting an awesome wall quilt too.

Oh my goodness I just found this video! You are not only entertaining but you're very knowledgeable and not stingy with your knowledge. I am fairly new to quilting & always looking for inspiration, coaching, and a good Mentor. However everyone I have come across lives so far away from me. I clicked on notifications to be notified of all your videos thank you for being on here and for this video. I have tried free motion quilting but I can't quite get the hang of it yet.

I totally get you!! None of my girlfriends quilt, so I must look to the internet for inspiration/help. I started seriously quilting about 2 years ago (and still consider myself a beginner of sorts); do you have a fabric shop or sewing machine shop nearby? They often offer tons of classes (although I've never taken any because I'm too lazy)? Btw, Angela has her own channel on RUclips where she talks about quilting, and it's full of great info on FMQ.

Angela has some great Craftsy classes, and there are other great teachers, too. Look for when they have a sale, and give one a try! And I don't work for Craftsy, I just have spent way too much money on classes, so I know about them.

True confession...I promised my mother-in-law a new log cabin quilt for her bed. I bought the fabric but never made the quilt. She passed away three years ago. Yeah, I was a terrible DIL. I am not sure I will ever be able to make that quilt without feeling really, really bad.
I appreciate your show and your fun approach to quilting. My daughter and I discuss your techniques frequently and remind each other constantly that 'finished is better than perfect' or as we say, 'finished is good enough'. Thank you, Angela, for bringing some fun back into my quilting world!

Oh, you should make it in memory of her. Then every time you see it, you can remember her. That's why quilts are so amazing!

You make me feel so much better… My confession - or one of my confessions - was going to be that I started a quilt for my mother-in-law, and she died before I got it finished! In my defense, she was supposed to be helping me with it , then she started hedging about the colors… But I still feel terrible! I think I've decided to make it in two halves, as it was a rather large quilt, and I will give one to each of my daughters... soon as I can remember where it is again…

U've talked about this so many times (that I've seen) but u've never demo'd it like u did tonite. To me this was the most interesting part (other than just watching u that is) of this particular segment, but I love them all & really look forward to Wednesdays so I can see the next 1. Angela, I'm 13 & live two miles away from your shop. Ever since I saw it, I've been begging my mom to take me. I've never quilted and frankly know next to nothing about it. My mom caved in and is taking me next week to the square when she gets off work. I'll buy some fabric and materials and hopefully begin my quilting journey! I was wondering if you could make another video for absolute beginners like me. I don't have any idea about how to do anything other than half square triangles! :) Thanks.

Sasha Fowler that is so awesome!! I began quilting as a teenager, long before RUclips could show you everything you want to know. There are so many awesome quilters giving tutorials. I urge you to check out all of Angela's channels .. because she is awesome. Also the Missouri star quilt company, and man sewing with Rob Appell is just fantastic. Simply search quilting and bounce around until you find what you are looking for. Buy a great ruler, cutting mat and rotary cutter (if mom approves), great scissors, pins, and a cheap machine. Those are the basic things you need. Good luck!!

I also do the stretchy-stretch. Not all the time, but still, more often than I should. Also I didn't put labels on the quilts I made. But my biggest confession is that I didn't finish a quilt for my mom because I didn't think I could make it perfect. I didn't think it would be good enough. That's right about the time I found your videos and decided you were absolutely right that a finished quilt is better than a perfect quilt top. So now I don't have any problem giving away my finished quilts!
