I was with you on the 20 amp upstairs (at 6:06) ring until recently. Board change at a nice 4-bed house with a decent installation. Called back for the RCBO tripping. Wife and two daughters using hairdryers at the same time. Do these things really need to be over 2Kw each! Good to see you back on form. Content and quality unmatched in nice lil' sub-20 minute packages. Sod the the "it's an easy money spinner" brigade. Caterpillar state not to twist the wires too. They also say not to butt the insulation on the wire all the way up to the crimp on non-insulated terminals because if the wire moves it can lever the conductors from the crimp (that's on engine, off highway kit mind, so probably not applicable to a fixed inatallation)

Been using ferrules for over twenty years & I'd never go back! Watch out relying on the colours as there are three different colour schemes - French, Weidmuller & German/DIN 46228.
Doing your certs on the go is just the "right" way to do it, it may make the onsite work marginally longer, but saves time in the long run because you're not writing the numbers down twice!

Just had a mooch in the BBB and found the following two that seem relevant regarding the need to use ferrules.
526.9.1 states "in order to avoid inappropriate seperation or spreading
of individual wires of multi wire, fine wire or very fine wire
conductors, suitable terminals shall be used or the conductor ends
    should be suitably treated."
526.9.2 states "soldering (tinning) of the whole conductor end of multi
wire, fine wire and very fine wire conductors is not permitted if screw
    terminals are used. "

We do the cert on site (on laptop) but ALSO write the readings down in a desktop diary we keep in the van. The NICEIC site sometimes shites itself halfway thru a cert, and in any case, you can then look back to the readings if you get a question :)
With regard to domestic work, we're finding it's coming back up in level (south coast). Got a couple of rewires coming up that had been put off due to lockdown.
And good tip about the DIN rail on the van.. we've just started doing that, colleague bought 3M of din rail (cheap as chips, not worth messing with ones removed from boards LOL)
In order to keep customers going during board changes, we have a 30A main fuse that we put in the holder, and we fit a temp board on 6.0mm from the meter terminals. The temp board has 3x twin sockets on a B20 and a 6A for temp lights if needed, (oversleeved the cores and made off the terminals so they don't show bare copper). Not strictly to regs, but keeps the customer happy and it's only for a couple of hours, while supervised

Was working in Canterbury last week, had to drive to the site, unload every possible tool I might need from the van and then park my van in the closest car park - some 10 minute walk away. At least in the US you are required to use the ferrule crimper that is specified by the ferrule manufacturer for UL compliance. Ferrules are often required for finely stranded wire [i.e. Class K] if the terminals are not rated for it. Can't remember the BS 7671 regs on them. We just use them everywhere because it also makes it easier if you have to pull a wire out the strands are not all mangled, saves so much time for the next guy.

With crimp terminals, you are not supposed to twist the wire strands too much. A very slight twist so they go in the terminal is fine. But nothing more. The idea of the crimp is to make an airtight seal onto the wires. This is more effective if there is no twisting of the wire strands.

thomas nagy it seems mad to do it with kettles as that would only make them less efficient as they’ll require a longer boil time there more energy lost to the surroundings. At least with vacuum cleaners you can designed more efficient motors and piping to allow better suction per watt thermal losses and make them quieter

    @ Thomas Nagy,
Been using boot-lace ferrules since about 1990 in control cabinets and switchboards, I don't know why anyone wouldn't use them, like you say, they make the whole thing neater and they negate having things like short-circuits happening, one thing a lot of people don't realise is that they are obtainable in sizes up to 50 mm² and you could probably get larger ones if you needed them.
The 4-jaw crimp tool is a necessity, we had a lot of failed crimps with the 2-jaw ratchet crimp tool over here in New Zealand
Oddly enough, I'd like your opinion if I may, what are your thoughts on these "new" screw-less clamp terminals that are starting to appear with a few devices, like industrial switches and the like.
I tried some and they clamp quite solidly, I was originally stand-offish about using them, but I'm converted, especially with ferruled conductors.
Work-wise, I'm flat-out, since the lock-down here, I have a back-log of about 2-3 months work and I'm looking to take on a 2nd apprentice or try and find a qualified electrician.
    Cheers,
    Mike T.

Before I do a board change, I inform the client, (be they home owners or landlords) that I will first conduct an eicr. The reason is very simple and I explain it like this. When you have a plain wooden door, you would primer it first before you put the final coat on? Well it the same with this only, you need to know where the underlying problems are before you replace the board for new. Makes my job much easier and if you do have issues directly from doing an eicr, you can clear them with the customer first before you end up looking like an eegit!!

It is hard to know what's best for pricing, if you end up having to change the board...if you did the "sample test" method for the EICR, you open up a can of worms on the board change. Chiefly, because Johnny DIY has left an inaccessible connection in a wall somewhere. Happy hunting!

So Tom, how do electric heaters like kettles or space heaters get more efficient when already 99%+ of the electricity gets converted into heat?

8:46 You can hide the search that's taking up a quarter of you taskbar. Right click on an empty part of the taskbar and go to search, you can hide it completely or turn it into a small icon.

Yiu can get Ferrells in different sizes, any color you like.
The problem I have is I don't know what size to get. There super cheap and you can buy in bulk. Cheers

Yeh, nah, I wouldn't be twisting the wires going into the bootlace ferrules. I also strongly recommend using a Knipex 12 62 180 wire stripper which helps set the length perfectly for the ferrules every time

100% agree with you about landlord's not being interested weather the installation is safe they just want a report with satisfactory on it. I get numerous calls about doing EICR for £100 all in, the sad thing is someone will done it and fudge the results or LIM everything.

Great video thanks for sharing. Just wonder how long it will be before, god forbid, a tenant is injured with a bodgit and scarper eicr.

    • @wardrobe3
      @wardrobe3 4 года назад

The same amount of time it’ll take for a tenant to get injured because of a bodgit and scarper landlord who’s been doing his own stuff to keep costs down for year’s. The only difference is the landlord will have a get out clause because of the “eicr”

Hi Tom, So far as coping goes I haven't stopped work as we are contracted with southern water so we are classed as key workers. I have managed to use the time to also finish my NVQ and have now qualified as a spark. now I just haft to go forth into the world and get more experience as I still feel I don't know enough. How long after you qualified did it take for you to feel like you knew what you were doing?

I still come across stuff that makes me stop and think now. everyone does i guess.

Do a college course or just go for an apprenticeship, if you do a college course first then you’re more likely to get an apprenticeship because it shows you really do have an interest and want to do it

Working in the events/entertainment industry life is currently a furlough based one. On the note of not actually knowing what life will be like on the otherside of this and the fact I'm paying extreme prices for a two bedroom flat in Reading, I'm really smashing through as much as I can to get an electricians apprenticeship. Its great to see a Electronic and Electrical Engineering degree means nothing to companies without an added 18th Edition. 😂😂

I’ve been working flat out for my firm since COVID kicked in bar having two days off at the start when nobody knew what was going on.
Council work died until about June, so I was mainly doing 3 phase board changes and eicrs for office blocks. Had a few rewires too
Now I’m back doing council repair and maintenance since June. I’d rather be on the commercial side again but it pays the bills i guess

Here in Brazil , it's a difficult situation. But I go to clients everyday, but because there are no airplanes... All is done by car ( most of the trips, 1000-3000 km) that's the hard part and with all the necessary precautions..

There is a regulation mate, can’t tell you the number and I’m not getting up to get the blue bible ! But it says something along the lines of stranded wire that is at risk to damage under termination must be terminated using a crimped end to protect the cable 👍🏻

I was working 5 days a week up tell 4 weeks ago when I fell off my roof and bruised my pelvic bone and broke a rib. I'll be going back to 5 days a week in two weeks if my doctor signs off.

It will be interesting to see how the EICR gets positioned in the rental sector. It could work out well for landlords in respect of DIY horrors or tenants not meddling. On the other hand, it might end up like an energy performance cert, which means not a great deal, but gives tenants an opportunity to act up if they're served notice and don't have a copy.

  • @trent624

That is some size ring circuit. Assuming its 2.5mm line and neutral then that works out to 145 meter ring which is above the max 100 meter. But either way it was already installed so who cares but just thought I would point it out. Love you vids!

I caught that too. And while small appliances tend to use less power now that tends to be as much because of upper limits (set by the dreaded EU) as improvements in efficiency

Upstairs rings are where everyone plugs in their 3kW fan heaters on those frosty mornings while they get dressed isn't it? oh perhaps it's just me.

    • @timcondliffe6698
      @timcondliffe6698 4 года назад

Only up north, when the gas pipe freezes lol! I agree with you, however. It's why we have 13A plugs, and expected loads on domestic rings are calculated for 3kw heaters (for those that don't know..)
In London, even in the spring, the concrete maintains an ambient temperature akin to a BBQ pit roast on Mercury! It gets hot! Still would feel robbed sticking a ring on a B32 though...
