Have on with 4 drives RAID 5. It is populated with data and later today I will add a 5th drive and expand the RAID. I am curious how well it will handle the data that is stored presently and how fast the process will take. My negatives for this device are few in number - don't appreciate the screws required to remove body panels to access the internals, the all* plastic housing (some parts perhaps should be metal), and admittedly the disappointment of the management console. The latter does work well enough but some items seem to be out of date or missing some functionality such as the File Explorer. I have used Synology and remain mostly with QNAP devices. I wish Asustor would be 'inspired' by QNAP and rework part of the Management Console and apps. The one thing people should be reminded about is this unit doesn't need the absolute fastest M.2 drives. There is a limit of throughput by being 2.5 gig Ethernet and more so based on the limitation so the CPU. Am I happy with this device - in general yes and it will serve my needs well enough. The rest is just a game of catch up.

I can't say for sure as I don't know your setup, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem. Traditional NAS boxes make a lot of noise due to the drives spinning, but that isn't an issue with this as they're solid state.

can anyone answer: is this RAID only? can this be used as a simple enclosure for 6 independant volumes?

I just got mine but I haven't set it up yet so I can't really answer your question. However, why would you spend $450 (for the 6 bay, without drives) if you only need external storage without the HUGE benefit of RAID? Really that's the whole point of a NAS. It's not just storage. It's redundant storage.

@@robtk3 i currently have an 8 bay startech enclosure, it got damaged when i moved, so since i have to replace it anyway, i am exploring upgrade options, i just need mass storage 20-40 TB range, i like the small footprint of this, just not sure if i like the idea of it always being on, i don’t need to access very often and when i do i make a copy to a cheaper portable drive so if it corrupts it only kills the copy (for context most of my data is media, movies tv shows music ect) i was looking at the 12 bay and running 12 x 4TB firecuda and running raid 6, however i don’t have tons exp with NAS so i’s prefer to keep it offline if possible as i only need to access like once a month
