  • Horn Speaker Comparison and demonstration:
    JBL- 2360a
    Altec 811b
    Altec 511b
    EV Electro Voice - HP640
    Yamaha -S4115H
    EV SM120a
Cerwin Vega - generic horns - research indicates these may have be engineered and manufactured as a mid horn by Altec for CV. If anyone knows please confirm in the comments.
All these horns were demonstrated with a budget driver the Selenium D250-X GW 1" Phenolic Horn Driver. The tweeter is a EV ST-350b and the woofer a 15" EV Force in a Peavey FH-1 W-Bin. The crossover is a Uxcell 180W 3-Way Crossover with Crossover Points: 850/4000 Hz; Circuit Filter: Low W 12 db/oct High T 12 db/oct.
These horns are for compression drivers.

    Helpful comparison with caveats:
--The bass bin is widely considered to be only good up to 400hz, so there's likely a big dip in the response curves.
--Passive crossovers must be tweaked for each driver's parameters, so none are likely optimized in this demo.
That said, the Yamaha performed better than I expected it to. My favorite horns so far are EV HR9040 "white whales" with EV DH1AMT drivers. Cheers!

I am looking for a pair of the EV HR9040 to add to the test and I already have the DH1 drivers for testing. Also recently got JBL 2355's to add to the next test. I found some large Mantarays but they are 600miles away long drive for a pair of lenses

@@SpeakerCraft-q9m I would lend you mine if you were close by. I'm in Colorado. Right now I am testing and tweaking a pair of TOA 380SE PA mains. They're very high quality, similar to Altec/JBL/EV and can often be had for cheap to use as-is or mined for really nice drivers.

This is cool, they all sounded with clarity and preciseness. The JBL horn have that kind of high freq resonance in between the horn then lets it all out in the mouth. That monster is a long throw horn

Thanks for uploading. I don't know if you could give me a heads-up on this, but I was wondering which would suit best for sound therapy, for instance playing Himalayan singing bowls and gongs for relaxation purposes?? Which would you say possess the most dynamic range and has the 'feel' to it (for lack of a better word).

Thank you for sharing this sound comparison. That is absolutely unique and highly interesting. Surprising that even with a handy you can already hear big differences. Really impressing. I am a happy owner of 3 2360A horns with 2446H drivers, but they still need to be installed in our living room. I also agree that larger horns sound better as long as it is well designed. Your 2360 sounds warmer in comparison to other 2360 videos in the web. Possibly your 1 inch driver is facing less compression in comparison with the standard 2 inch drivers from JBL. I am absolutely in favor of horn speakers since ever, but the sound of the 2360A with (any?) vintage 2 inch JBL compression driver is even for me a bit to much horn-sounding.
    All the best from Munich!

One reason it may sound warmer is the driver is phenolic and not titanium. I also have 2446's, 2451, Ev DH series they all sound much brighter.

May I also asked whether you used an external microfon or did you use the internal microfon of your handy?
Assuming that the external microfon would be of better quality than an intenal microfon.

@@fredfiasco9578 Yes I used the internal for my mobile as it was what was available. I have a DBX RTA mic for my Driverak that I plan to use in future tests just need an adapter. Do you have any inexpensive microphone suggestions?

    • @callmebigpapa

I think it sounds softer because of the phenolic diaphram of the driver used. I also have 2446's and a few other 2" and they do sound brighter on the same horn. The reason I used the phenolic driver was it is a generally much more affordable and common example for anyone who might want to get into horns. Thanks for commenting!

Great comparison! The Yamaha’s need to be mounted to dampen ringing from what I’ve heard. Some say that They ring even when mounted! What’s your favorite of among these?

In person the ones the I liked best were the 2360, HP640 and the 511's. In a regular house setting probably the 511 are the most reasonable! All of the horns made the midrange really sound great compared to say a 5" cone. Any of these or similar would be a great upgrade to any prebuilt speakers, in fact I will be adding a pair of 811's to my 1 st gen Altec Santanas! Thanks for watching!

If using this type of bass horn there are some examples on the web of people enlarging the enclosure and then tuning the enclosure with good results. Remember this is a hobby and to have fun!

I got them used and was told they are Peavey FH-1 (Folded Horn) 15" woofer enclosures. Originally they contained Peavey's Black Widow 1504 woofers but were refitted with 15" EV Force woofers. They have these specs:
      Nominal Basket Diameter 15"
      Impedance 8 ohms
Power Rating (EIA RS-426A) 150 Watts
      Frequency Response 45Hz - 6kHz
      Sensitivity (1W/1m) 100dB SPL
      Voice Coil Diameter 2.5" / 63.5mm
      Resonant Frequency (fs) 40 Hz
      Impedance (Re) 5.2 ohms
      Total Q (Qts) .51
      Compliance Equivalent Vol. (Vas) 297.4 liters / 10.5 cu.ft.
      Voice Coil Overhang (Xmax) 3.3mm
As someone pointed out this might not be the right speaker for this enclosure. That said it sounds decent to me.

the Peavey FH-1 is an improved version of the Klipsch La Scala/Belle the horn is a little longer and has a larger mouth than the Belle plus it has no flat non expanding horn sections like the LaScala does. The woofer orientation is the same as a LaScala. It is also a better braced horn@tz
