Back before there were computers on every desk and everyone started doing their own typing, and before decades of ruthless personnel-cutting, many large companies maintained a pool of typists / secretaries who were not assigned to a specific executive. It’s most likely that Jean was already employed in the secretarial pool and was then reassigned to be Whitfield’s personal secretary. All that would take would be a memo from a person authorized to make that assignment.

I saw this in the theatre. Everyone loved MJF in the 80s!!! He was a true movie star! Nothing but charisma! So funny and charming in every interview he gave too. If MJF had not got sick he would still be starring in movies today. Brakes my heart to see him now. MJF & his wife one of the best love stories of all time. I'll never forget standing in line for Back to the Future and saying to my girlfriend, "I hope his character is as good as Alex P. Keaton?". As a Canadian I can say MJF and John Candy are the most loved Canadians of all time.

One of the best comedies of the 80s. Michael J Fox just brilliant in the role of post boy and executive highflyer. Just hilarious scenes where it just goes to show how you can get away with anything in such a large organisation where nobody really knows anyone in the building. Funny scenes in the board meetings looking for Carlton Whitfield. A great film with a great 80s soundtrack saw this in the cinema back in 1986 love it then, love it even more now.

LOL, I am actually in this movie. I was a truck driver in Manhattan when this was made and there is a scene where MJ Fox is running up some stairs to go inside a building to meet his gf. I think she was doing a runway show or something like that. Well a white truck with a yellow or red cab goes by and I am in the cab. You can't see the driver but it's definitely me because I remember driving by when they were making the film. I am not sure of the color of the cab because I haven't seen this movie in decades and my company I worked for had both yellow and white cabs at the time.

Of course he fell in love with her at first sight; she's a super girl.
I never see this one mentioned on RUclips, so thanks for watching it!
My mother and I have an enduring fondness for The Secret of My Success. It's one of those movies we missed at the theater but caught as soon as it was available to rent on VHS.
She gets a kick out of both "Oh Yeah" scenes. The scene by the pool always gets a big laugh, too. Brantley's horror at discovering just who it was that seduced him, contrasted with her amused delight that she's her new boy toy's "Auntie Vera" is hilarious.
It's funny that a movie which basically has zero special effects still suffers from the indignities of high definition TVs. When the pool scene flashed by in an instant on the big screen or was recorded on a roughly 333×480 resolution tape, you had to be at least a little eagle-eyed to spot Fox's nude briefs; on DVD or better, they're painfully obvious.

This is such a great movie. It was hard to find it for a bit at a decent price. I was glad that Netflix put it on their site. This version was based on something that Steven Spielberg actually did. He snuck on the Universal Lot and used an empty production office as his own. 13:15 Michael J Fox’s cousin in this movie married Howard’s nephew before she got bit & died so there’s no blood relation. Just related by marriage. 15:57 he was actually helping them make money by getting their product out by saying we have other options to get our stuff out. 18:04 she’s probably from a pool they have of assistants that fill in where needed. 18:57 it was risky for him to use any company amenities like the gym. His uncle could walk right in. 41:43 they bought 5% of the available stock which signals a takeover cause it gives them enough power to sway the board in their favor.

Glad I found this comment because I was thinking about posting it.
I don't know if this is really based on Spielberg's story, but when I was younger, I read this story about him and thought he was a bad azz. I think he and Lucas also started the jeans, sneakers, and basic shirt look of the new Hollywood director.
It was hard to pick the director out from the rest of the crew. Which I Think is what happened when Lucas went to England to shoot Star Wars: ANH. They saw this Yankee kid in jeans, sneakers, and a casual shirt and had never seen a director that looked like that, so very few people took him seriously... Until Star Wars became a blockbuster.
I think that was in Skywalking, the book about Lucas and his movie journey

You need to acquire 5% of the outstanding stock & file a 13-D (w/ the SEC) which identifies the size of the holding, identifies the shareholder, and discusses the plans for the company. You still need over 50% of the vote to take over control (management) of the company or a majority of the voting stock/vote cast w/o abstaining, etc. depending on the situation.
All this has been done w/ little explanation as to why. (Easy to look up).

This story was reportedly inspired by the fact that Steven Spielberg took over an empty office at Universal when he had a low-level job there at the age of 17. There was an empty office with a working phone, and he allegedly moved himself in and started passing himself off as a Universal executive. Rather than getting fired, he was admired for his moxie. Most people forget that she was in "City Slickers" ... she's been working consistently since the 80's & 90's ... a lot television roles and small movies. She also co-founded a New York based theatre group with Gina Gershon and co-founded an LA based theatre group in 1991. She's also written a book and released an album in 2003

You should watch another great *_Michael J. Fox movie soon:_** Teen Wolf (1985)*

There is a scene at the end of Brantley's initial phone call he picked up in the vacant office as he started pretending to be Whitfield that just before he hung up his hair was Michael's natural brown and a bit longer but every other scene in the movie has him with shirt dark red hair. I believe this was his initial screen test they simply left in the movie without reshooting it.
Art who always nitpicked about everything was played by (Gerry Bamman) who was also cheap Uncle Frank in Home Alone 1 & 2.
The actress who played Christie (Helen Slater) just a couple years prior played Super Girl on TV.
Brantley's Uncle (Richard Jordan) had co-starred opposite Michael York in the distopian future Logan's Run where he played a Sandman that terminates runners on last day.
The guy who was Brantley's friend in the mail room (John Pankow) two years prior was in the movie with William Petersen and Willem Defoe To Live and Die in LA (extremely violent, nudity) with the title song for the movie by Wang Chung. It's an awesome movie if you guys haven't seen it I highly recommend it if you get a chance.

Helen Slater was the lead in the 1984 "Supergirl" movie. Nice to see this often overlooked Michael J. Fox film. Great reactions to this fun 80s film, Kids!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I love the soundtrack for this film. I have it on cassette somewhere. That, and the love interest is Helen Slater, the main character from the 1980s Supergirl movie. Great film.

Forgot which song it was (I think it was "Don't Ask The Reason Why" by Restless Heart, but not 100% sure) that was different on the soundtrack than what was in the film. My cassette is 2000 miles away in storage, so it's hard to check. All I remember is that the alternate lyrics on the cassette always threw me off when I listened to it because I knew movie version better from watching the film so much back in the day. Definitely one on my favorite soundtracks. As one of the "80's it girls" the three movies that always immediately come to mind are Secret of My Success, Supergirl, and Legend of Billie Jean when I think of Helen Slater, and then sometimes I'll also remember she was in Ruthless People and City Slickers.😊

This movie is responsible for me leaving my factory job in my Midwest hometown, moving West, getting my first "corporate" job in a mailroom, and eventually becoming a marketing professional. This is more than just a movie to me. To be fair, my aspirations were not as unrealistic, and there was no Uncle Howard or Aunty Vera, lol. 😆
