To be honest, I would not want to go to a show just to see a singer jump around and lip-sync. They are not called singers for nothing. It always makes me think that I could just stay at home, play them on my system at considerably highter quality (and lower volume) and spare myself all those not-so nice things about going to a concert (even disregarding money). I am more than willing to foregive some mishaps and mistakes in a performance.

My perspective as a professional singer and voice teacher:
Backing tracks for additional vocals and harmony are fine, but the lead vocal should always be handled live by the singer. That's their job, it would be ridiculous for the drummer to be air drumming the whole performance and have a drum track phoned in.
The more interesting debate to me is whether or not live auto-tune is an acceptable admission in performances to beautify live singing that would otherwise be pitchy.

A big part of the problem is audience expectation. In the west, people generally want to hear a
live performance that comes close to the studio album. In order to achieve this some pre-recorded
material is used and this has been going on for decades. The only thing that has changed is the
technology which makes it easier than ever to accomplish.
Its worth noting that in Japan the expectation is different. For many, its pointless to go to a concert
that replicates an album - one could simply buy the album instead. And yes, I highly recommend
going to Japan just for the live music scene - absolutely amazing regardless of genre.

Some concerts, the pyrotechnics, and the show are worth going. THe ones without a show better be singing live. but I go to more Blues Lounges and Jazz Clubs than concerts. I like the live singers there. When she walks by table and asks my name, then uses it in the next song, that is just so special to an old retired man like me.

Simple answer: If you are a singer then you should sing, period! In the studio, live, on TV and especially at a concert for your paying fans. 30 years from your prime and I'm paying for a ticket, you better be the one singing. If you can't do the choreography and sing, then adjust the damn choreography. If you can't hit those high notes anymore, change to a lower key. Great performers know this, Great performers do this! No AI generated lyrics or music, no auto tune or pitch correction, and no damn lip-syncing.

I'm ok with pre-recorded harmonies, but the core act better be live. How insulting to the multitude of talented hard working bands that perform live up to 5 nights a week to make a living. With todays advances with dsp and pitch correction if they can't croak it out then make room for someone who can.

I saw The Who live around ‘73. Pete Townsend made an announcement that a song from Who’s Next was going to include an organ piece that was prerecorded. Maybe it was Teenage Wasteland, not sure.(it was the 70’s man) It was one of the best concerts I ever attended. Their use of that track was not even thought of again. Super energetic performance! 🎶

Way back when over a several year period I've attended 5 Frank Zappa concerts. There was one in about 1979-80 where he had a large reel-to-reel tape machine near the back of the stage. It was not hidden at all and was visible for all to see. For many of the songs, he'd start the tape and the band would start at the same time. Mind you, including himself, there were still 8 musicians on stage playing live. All the vocals were live. I had no problem with that.
Those that hide the fact that most if not all of the sound you are hearing is a recording can pound sand. Why would I pay money to listen to a recording when I can do that for free at home?

I know for K-pop what they tend to do is record a vocal at the venue before the show while not dancing. During the show they mix the actual live vocal in with the prior recorded one depending on the dance. There are parts of a dance when you can breath suitably to sing and there are parts when you cannot.
I think this is okay, since this type of performance is equal parts dance and singing.
That said, I have found I only get value from close small venue live performance. If I need to watch the projector to see their face expression or how they play the instrument, I might as well be at home watching TV.

I’m a big Dave Matthews Band fan, seen him over a dozen times, each show, each set, is different & the musical improvisations are different, it’s kinda one of the reasons you go- because they are talented musicians that have a special gift and they do it well. Sometimes they have parts or backing tracks that are all electronic or an extra guitar backing track … I don’t mind that … or even a backing vocal track to harmonize to… but if I’m coming to see you … I’m coming to watch you perform. My girlfriend last year or the year before would show me clips of post malone live … now I haven’t seen him but in the clips he’s always dancing all goofy looks really messed up on something … and not singing a whole lot… never seen him but … that makes me not want to. I do enjoy a lot of his music and the idea of spending 3 to 6 hundred dollars to go to a concert of his … I just cant

I'll keep it simple. If it's a concert, all of the performance has to be live regardless of the age of the performers. I've been to many shows were vocals and sometime the music was dubbed; and I always felt ripped off. If they can't dance and sing at the same time - just sing. If I wanted a recorded experience, then I buy the Blu-ray. (And I have well over a hundred of them, and about the same in DVD Concerts from years gone by.)

What constitutes a concert performance to me? It’s a performance and they are performers and whatever delivers the magic to me is OK with me. The carpenters had a very awesome multi layered sound that was created by overdubbing, and when I saw them in concert in the 70s I would not have been offended to learn that Karen and Richard were singing along with other layers of vocals that had been recorded.
If I pay money to see a woman sawed in half on stage, and I found out that there were actually two women, one in each half of the box, I would not feel cheated. I go for the magic!

So i dk..If the whole show is pre-recorded i have no interest in it. I'm mostly interested in the musicians..the band..live instruments. "Fake" backing vocals i have no issue with.
I actually went to a concert recently which had multiple acts, the first couple hours was all live instruments and singers. Not totally my type of music but I'll watch almost anything if its live with a band. But after the 1st couple hours the rest of the show was all pre-recorded music but the singers were live. We left & about half the crowd started trickling out too. Other half stayed and sang along and all that. Its different for everyone.
Def Leppard, Journey, & Cheap Trick are playing in Orlando next month..on a Wednesday lol..but the wife made me order some tickets. About $60 bucks a piece in the upper stadium. The cheap seats. Very few "old" bands im willing to spend big money on. You never know what type of show you're going to get.

I’ve seen some lame shows with fake singing. Maria Carey in Vegas with my family was the worst, terrible harsh sound as well. Napkins for ear plugs the sound was so loud and shrill yet the crowd thought it was great. Cheap Trick show I saw recently just awful, just loud pile of crap. Earplugs again. We are devolving as a nation. Yet I saw Brittney Spears in Vegas and she did a heck of a job. I had a smile on my face the whole show. Again with the family. I much prefer less popular acts live in small venues of which I attend regularly. It’s easy to find good sounding live music if you avoid arenas and are willing to branch out. Even tribute bands can be really good. Beatles, Hendrix, Doors, Zeppelin, Linda Ronstad, Cars are some that I’ve enjoyed the last few years. You have a great channel Erin.

One of my favorite metal bands, is Megadeth. Dave Mustain's voice, on his albums, is very unique, and sounds great. However, when he sings live... its pretty darn bad. Not sure if its partially because he cant hear himself well... and or if its just that they do a lot of processing to fix his bad vocals on the Albums. Id personally had been fine, with Dave lip syncing his vocals... so long as the entire band, and his own Guitar playing... was Live.
That said... I believe Ive seen them twice.. and at both times, the sound setups were absolute trash. While I like Loud music... in one instance, the speakers were so loud, that It was painfully hurting my ears. There was also an issue, where.. depending on where you stood.. you were not able to hear all of the bands instruments / vocals, very well. But the biggest issues, was too much distortion, and being way too loud... even for a person that enjoys loud music.
One of the best concert I attended, was a "Metallica + Guns & Roses + Faith No More" concert, when I lived in Florida. At the time, while I liked some of GNR's music... I still didnt own their CDs, and didnt know a lot of their music. They actually put on one of the best shows, of the concert. It was interesting.. because that very night, I believe James Hetfield had a broken arm.. and one of the bands badmouthed the other. It become massive news, in the next few days to follow.
But after only a few concerts.. I stopped going. The music quality always tended to be far Inferior to the CDs. There are people constantly Pushing and Squishing you... and or trying to Mosh into you. Beer bottles and garbage being thrown from upper stadium seats. Fights randomly breaking out. Idiots trying to Crowd Surf, and getting paralyzed when nobody kept them up (saw that happen to an overweight female... no more than 25 feet away from me), and more.
Its also a hassle driving to these places, dealing with traffic, possible car troubles, gas prices, ever expensive ticket prices.. and more. Its just often better to listen and enjoy, in your own home, with some Audiophile grade speakers.
There are some exceptions. I once was at a fairly small bar, where there was a very unique band was playing. They sounded excellent, live.
Ive often wondered, why some of these Stars, are not using Live vocal EQ and Vocal Effects, to match their On-Album vocals. Ive heard some say that its impossible... but I think thats just Ignorance. At worst, the equipment they use in the studio, hasnt been shrunk down into a fairly portable size. Such a feat, wouldnt be that difficult, in this modern day and time.

I ONLY go to see bands that perform pretty much 100% live. That is; they're playing main/lead instruments and singing lead and backing vocals. The exception being a few instrumental backing tracks when necessary. One of the main criteria in deciding which bands/performers I like and follow are ones that can perform exceptionally well live. I don't care for all the dancing and jumping around on-stage. Bring your talent and ability to make music and use it. I have no time for fake. lol

If you can't back up your recording with an actual decent live performance, then you are only a recording artist, and NOT a performer.

I want to hear them sing, or play, even if it's different.
For example, Annie Haslam, AKA the singer of Renaissance, is doing her farewell tour after 53 years. Well, longer than that - she joined Renaissance in '71, but performed before then. She's currently 77, and only recently has she had to deal with things that affected her voice. Up until about 2 years ago she sounded the same as she did back then.
When it's a really good artist, such as Richie Havens (God rest his soul) who put on a beautiful shows even when the big C was chasing him down, Peter Frampton who is continuing on even in his neuro-muscular fight, damn can he still play even though he sits through it all, or Annie, who wants to finally retire her voice and concentrate on her art / painting; when they get up on stage and become one with the crowd, it's more than the music - It's the sum of the energy and emotions shared by all. If anyone has never experienced that, I have deep sorrow for them.
And yes, I've met and spoken to all 3 mentioned as well as a good number more. These memories and experiences are my riches, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.
(Richie was a beautiful soul - when you spoke with him, you just wanted to be as gentle and loving as he was. A true life altering experience.)

Their music is intricately layered so they had to rely on a fair bit of pre-recorded vocal harmony, rhythm guitar and synths, with just all the primary parts played live. Yes it detracts from it, but it's just impractical for a small band on a global scale tour without a ton of money to reproduce the studio album live, so I find that acceptable.

It's interesting when it comes to electronic music because the music itself is already not played by "traditional" instruments and so seeing electronic music live implies watching a DJ mix and play music. This is where the "they're just pressing play" argument comes in. And while that's (usually) a gross oversimplification of it, it's also not the point. The point is to dance, feel the vibe of the crowd, and just have a good time.

If you need to dance for someone to come to your show, then your music is not that good. If they are charging big bucks for a show they better hire some backup singers and keys, or whatever. I much rather see a band at a small club. Arena shows, the sound is horrible and you can barely see the artist. The big labels just keep pushing horrible music out to people.

I do expect musicians to sing and play live, can't really see the point otherwise. Depending on the compositions, and demand for compex arrangements, and budget, I can see a point to some elements pre recorded if the budget doesn't allow for enough musicians on stage. Though in those cases, there will be less room for improvisation, so I usually prefer a smaller band adapting arrangements to what's available.

Pretty sure this is common practice for a lot of bands; oftentimes the singer is singing live, but they're backed by a prerecorded vocal that is pitch perfect. I saw this firsthand several years ago at a Garbage concert when Shirley Manson split the back of her trousers wide open during a song and she came to an abrupt stop. Meanwhile the prerecorded backup vocal kept playing for a second before the guys at the AV mixer stopped it. Ms. Manson left the stage for a moment and returned with new britches and on with the show.

Every ticket at a show should be refunded to everyone who came to see the person sing. The fraud should lose everything from whatever that weren't actually singing. For pop music where the emphasis is on the dancing and the show, lipsync and autotune are fine.

With the Eagles, it wasn't just backing harmonies, it was that Don Henley was lip syncing his lead vocals on the Eagles famous songs, like Desperado.

For me,no. Groups that I've seen and loved from the 70's and 80's probably don't have a lot of the original people in the group so it's not gonna sound the same. They just don't do it for me like they use to. But more power to them if they're still performing.

I would understand some of that. I saw Buddy Guy when he was about 78 yrs old. He still played the guitar great (or did he?!) and sang well. After closer inspection, he did have two other guitar players with him, and it was sometimes hard to tell which one was doing more. This is an example where the show was still great and I understand.

It depends on what’s not live. Bands have been using electronics for years but if the band is lip syncing and playing instruments not plugged in, that’s music on TV. If I’m going to a concert I want them singing and playing. It seems some legacy acts that can’t sing anymore are lip syncing and still charging crazy Money. That’s a ripoff.

It's not okay for me when they lipsync and/or have a musical tape runinng with them. you pay enourmous amount of money to watch a live show.
To listen to a apple computer or lip sync shit is just plain stupid no matter how old they are.
Remember Johnny Cash or Leonard Cohen they changed their material with age and how good it was!

If I wanted to hear an mp3, I’d stay home. I go to shows for the mess ups. I want a band to give it their all and I want it to be good. I want it sound like they’re an inch from it all falling apart. I’m paying good money and spending 2-4 hours going to the show. I’m not going to hear an mp3. I really don’t care about theatrics. I only go to metal shows though. I go there to rip my brains out and leave like I just had the best 2 hour therapy session money can buy.

If a person dances a lot, I assume backing tracks will be used (as there's a lot of breathing going on in singing and dancing...a one has got to give). I expect all my jazz players to be live.

I only go and see a select few bands these days for this exact reason. I wont pay to watch a recording, in my eyes I am buying one thing and then if I am given another I would not be happy. Personally I think artists by law should have to state on the ticket if they are not singing live. I have watched artists like Gabrielle, M people, Simple minds, who sounded better live than they were on CD and they were singing live. If you cant sing live either state that on the ticket or dont tour.

I dislike music with lyrics for the most part. It cheeses up the music. I feel like lyrics are there because that's what people expect today, not because they need to be. American idol generation. The instruments make the music imho.

I think these cases should be reserved only for specific background vocals and effects only. Otherwise, the band and singer should always be performing live. If they cannot for whatever reason, then they should not be touring. Know when to retire or when a song is just not doable live.

I am 100% against faking it! If you can't do it live stop ripping people off. I remember 50 years ago a lot of bands would not add extra instruments and vocals to the albums. They wanted to be able to play the music live and still sound the same as the albums. If I were in a big time talented band I would take pride and announce that it will be 100% live. No fake crap! The band who ever it would be would have a massive following. Take pride people that you can pull it off!

I don't see it as a black and white thing. A singer may use a recording to harmonize with themselves if that is what they do on the album. So recordings could be used creatively rather than as an easy out. I don't think the vast majority of the acts I see would do any lip syncing. By the way, definitely see Norah Jones in concert if you get the chance! She was fantastic. I'm glad I saw Paul Simon a couple of times several years back. He no longer tours because he can't sing as he once could. I don't think the thought of lip syncing even crossed his mind.

I actually saw the Eagles during their first farewell tour when I was a teenager, and I can tell you that at least 15 years ago they were definitely not using back up vocals or instrument. The show was amazing and the music sounded better than I’ve ever heard it before or since, but it was very much a live performance, and the breaths and very occasional missed Notes definitely came through the PA system.

    Great content as always!
As a musician, I can tell you it happens a lot more than most think. It started innocently enough with sounds done on the record that bands want you to experience live. But let’s say you’re an artist that has keyboards on one song, do you pay to bring a keyboard player out for one song? Or horns? Do you bring out a horn section for one song? So that was the start. Then, other stuff started becoming “canned” or enhanced. Drum triggers for example eliminate a lot of the issues with live mics. Nearly every major band has triggered drums if for nothing else than to open the gates. Few artists can do the choreography of dance moves AND remain on pitch.
For me, I want the “show” from artists I expect to see “A Show”. (Dancing, props, etc.) but I want to hear Sting’s bass with Vinnie’s groove locked in tight for real “musicianship” “shows”.

    • @AudriusN
