Day 2: One More Chance [Should I Quit or Keep Going?]
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 26 мар 2024
- After my multi-day kayak trip got off to a rough start, I had to decide to quit or keep going. I wasn’t getting a lot out of it so far, and I didnt want to force myself through something, but at the same time, was I giving the trip a fair chance? The Peace River Paddling Trail is a 68 mile route from Bartow to Arcadia, Florida.

What is Beer in Beautiful Places?
Hi, I’m Maddie! Celebrating an outdoor adventure with a beer has been a long-time tradition for me, and I wanted to create a platform for like-minded folks to come together. In my videos, I cover all types of adventures and review beer! Topics include day hiking, kayaking, travel, thru-hiking, and life on the road. In short, if you would describe yourself as an outdoorist, outdoorsman, outdoorswoman, hiker trash, nomad, or dirtbag, come on along, this is the channel for you! Welcome and cheers!

For my own selfish viewing pleasure, I hope you continue. 😂 Personally, in that ecosystem, alone...I couldn't do it. Your bravery has far surpassed mine Ranger. 💪 Stay warm! ✌️
Thank you! Luckily, nighttime temperatures only got warmer!
Hey Maddie, Most of the time them gators want nothing to do with you. Like the one that slid off the bank and scared the shit out of ya. They just want to get away from you. My advice is stay in the center of the river as much as possible. You got this dont quit. Your the Best !
Thank you! I heard before the trail they don't usually mess with humans, but that "usually" is what got me. I planned to be calm, cool, and collected, but being out there with them was a different story!
i believe the kyak rental should have better insights of river safety and conditions . its inexcusible on there part . especially if this is a national or even state park . they are not doing there part of the bargain . i wouldnt blame you for bailing . i want to see lots more great videos from you . Why , because if your on edge im actually alittle tense myself . Be safe
They seemed like nice people, but yeah I definitely thought they would've let me know what I was getting into a little more!
A lot of things about Florida are kind of half-assed.
You are RANGER.....RANGER knows what is best for RANGER,and whatever she decides will be the right decision for RANGER.....❤
Thanks for the encouragement!!
Paddle your own paddle, Maddie. Trust your guts in making a decision. ❤
Thank you for that encouragement! My gut wasn't telling me one way or the other at that point!
Taking the Katettle for another wild adventure! Stay safe good lady ❤
I don't have a problem with you evaluating and making a decision to end it. I live in SC and have a healthy respect for alligators AND snakes. I respect all that you do!
Maddie love your videos your a trip ..... Enjoy and be safe
If you do not enjoy it, do not do it, life is short. Go check out the many springs in the state, they are beautiful, they have hiking tails too if you do not want to kayak. I would not enjoy that river, too murky. At least when you kayak in the springs, the area of the water that is the springs is crystal clear and blue
Yea! You mentioned our (my wife and I) hometown of St. Pete. Downtown is amazing with many craft breweries. A neat place to visit for a couple days.
You’re doing great! All of your instincts are natural. I’m glad to be along for the adventure.
I am glad to see that you are sticking with it. It is good to push your limits a bit every now and then. I do not blame you for being nervous, if I saw a five foot gator I believe I would let out a not so manly squeal ;-)
Thank you!
Dang Maddie you are a boss!
When you said I am pretty sure those yellow eyes are a gator staring back at me I was like I could only do this trip with a polar bear assault rifle…and a judge…with buck shot…and a backup shot gun lol!
The other thing that worries me are shady people. You are one tough mug - but dang! I don’t trust people! There are some real scallywags out there. So glad you made it back safely. ❤
And to be honest I am so enjoying your adventure! But this one is scaring the 💩 out of me! 😅
Thank you! This was definitely more than I bargained for in the first couple days!
❤️🙏🏻🤗
Stay safe and take care Maddie 🙏🏻 Hope you're doing well my friend 🤞🏻God Bless you 🙏🏻 Appreciate you 🫶🏻
Whats brings more joy than mooing at cows, cockadoodledooing at roosters and oinking at pigs for your whole life?! Come back to NH and hike the Cohos Trail!
Ooooo I’ll have to look that up!
Adventure your own adventure. Don't feel like you need to go extreme. Your followers will be here for you. ❤ Stay safe.
Thank you! I definitely wasn't thinking it would be this extreme when I planned it. They say gators aren't interested in people, but it sure isn't easy to think everything's fine when you're out there!
I'm enjoying this series. I can watch now knowing that you are home safe. Does she go on to day 3? We will see!
Yay! Glad you’re enjoying them!
I had wondered about the tapping of the canoe... people used tap the dog bowl to let their pet know, 'come and get it, grubs uo' ... I wonder what the alligators think... 😅😅
Hahaha! I also wonder if making more noise is my instinct since that's what you do when there might be bears around!
Maddie I hope your have a great week' have fun.
Your kayak hides a lot of gear! I think you'll make it 7 days, at least you have a back up plan! I just read that alligators serve a wonderful function in the conservation of other water animals. They will dig "gator holes" --small ponds of fresh water. These potholes in the mud slowly fill with the last remaining water in an area, creating a miniature oasis that will enable it and other animal life to survive. Neat!
Gotta love gators! I was obviously a little freaked out by them in person, but they are very cool animals, too!
Hey lady. Most smaller rivers in Florida will have the need for portages every now and then. A nice river up north is the Wacissa River. Just a day trip but nice. The Suwannee River may be a great bet for you. A lot wider and easily navigated.
I asked the outfitter before I went down there about portages. They said no, and good thing, too, because there wasn’t usually normal woods or grass on the riverbanks, it was mostly steep sides or thick plants that I would have had to trample!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces Well glad you made it and it looked like fun. Plenty of sweet spots here in Florida. Hopefully you and smoke can enjoy the beaches here too. Check out Destin.
Smoke's tea kettle! That's great that you brought that with you on this trip. Give you a lot of credit for doing this trip solo. Florida adventures are challenging!
You sure are brave Maddie. I wouldn't go kayaking in FL if someone paid me. 😱
Safety first, stress level second. I really wish Smoke could be with you, always good to have another set of eyes. Since you are in gator country, terrain that looks like the bayou in Louisiana, I would re-consider going further. Stay safe and alert......................
There is a big difference between stopping and quitting.
You stopped and that was smart.
go towards the mountains, spring is here the cold is fading away!
Soon!
Oooh just finding dry land to camp!! Then Continuing on....... Your Journey on this Area is Awesome!! This adventure looks exciting and a little confusing (there is obviously several water routes)
KOKO keep on keeping on! You can do this Mattie...
Watch out for those Florida pythons(invasive species). Nice job negotiating those trees. And yes, discretion being the better part of valor, choose your adventures carefully - pushing the envelope simply for the sake of pushing the envelope might not be the best idea. Be well, stay safe. 🥾
You’re doing great. You got this!!!
Gators are just like bears, you always see them running away.
Bears didn’t eat you on the AT. Don’t let your imagination get the better of you.
Definitely! Thanks for the encouragement!
So happy Katettle got to come along to keep you company. Very nice shirt. I didn't like the ending😢
Sorry about that!
Wow Maddie! I know that if you do continue and finish the whole river, you will feel so proud and rightly so! I know this experience was nerve wrecking for you and you are handling it so well. Doing the limbo down the peace river...yeah...you got this !
LOL 🙂 I LOVE THE SWAMP! You just needed a rod and some bait. Would've changed everything 🙂
Thanks! Excited for you Maddie ❤ you're amazing ❤🎉
More?! Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces Maddie you made our summer 🌞 last one so yes more we appreciate you
The same old pink crocks!!! Haha!
Yes. Enjoy your coffee!!!
Enjoy the river!!!
Lordy Maddie! The suspense is thick as mud! 😜😜😜
Glad to see you hearted some comments. Means you didn't get eaten overnight!! I'd get out of there! Good luck.
I'm alive and well and back home now. Days 3 and 4 are up now!!
Gday Maddy. You'll be right. You got plenty of experience, and gut instinct, always trust it.
All the best. Bluey.
Maddie, if I have followed along on your adventures for so long and not learned about you then I'd be a fool... You are as stubborn as a mule and 'gators be darned, and obstacles be yielding, you have fun! For the sake of the rest of your videos of this trip I say... Do it in style... get it done! I'm planning on hiking in your neighboring trails soon, so I hope to bump into you and Smoke! Cheers!
Maddie, put your life jacket on
Too late now, unfortunately! These were all filmed two weeks ago
We enjoy your content and definitely look forward to seeing what you decided! ❤
Yay! Thank you!
When the going gets tough the tough get going. Staying alert is challenging in those parts. Thanks again for sharing your experience on the Peace River. 🐊👀
(Suggestion) Shawnee state forest in Portsmouth, Ohio. Two loop trails approx 30 'challenging' miles.Referred to as The little smokies of Ohio.......
I hope you're okay. This adventure is definitely crazy. Please be safe out there.
This episode was filmed March 12! I'm off the river and back in my apartment now. All is well!
Happy Easter Maddie, excited to have 4 sunny days in a row, it the Great NW. Still chilly though
Happy Easter to you too!
I love this trip! Scary and gorgeous landscape/wildlife!
AND it's okay to do less extreme trips! Adventure can take SO many forms, Maddie! I have a disease that makes anything more demanding than van camping impossible, BUT I live in an area of Michigan that has lakes, rivers, state parks, preserves, and sanctuaries galore! I hike 2-4 times per week, take bike rides on trails I can drive to in an hour, and I paddle 2-4 times per week, almost year-round. I usually go on the water for sunrises or sunsets. There are several chains of lakes where one can spend the day paddling from lake to lake. There are a few rivers (Grand, Raisin, & Maumee) nearby. There are a half dozen state park campgrounds within 2 hours of home, so it's easy to go out for a night or two. BUT if my body needs to go home, I'm not that far away. Wherever I go in my small portion of the world, I find lots of wildlife, beauty, and breath-taking subjects to photograph. Every morning I post a photo of nature's beauty from my adventures on Insta and FB, and even though I'm barely leaving home, there are other, less mobile folks, who enjoy sharing my adventures through my pics. Some locals are even starting to visit some of the sites I've posted about!
Life's the grand adventure; keep evolving and stay true to your center. Be well!
What a cliffhanger to end on...! 😬 But - phew - I guess you're OK 'cos I just watched the video! 😂
I didn't think it was hunting me or anything, just checking me out. But still!
It looks so peaceful and green...it's still white and snow here in Colorado. I'm a bit jealous. Vicks for mosquitoe repellent.
That's why I was looking for somewhere in Florida! Love that warm weather!
Thanks! Maddie
Sorry I missed thanking you for this! I got more comments than usual on this video and didn't see it!
Ranger you are an amazing young lady you will go far in life 💕
Thanks for the video
Ooh exciting! This looks like a fun adventure, 🐊 definitely a no way for me too 😲 . Can't wait to watch your next adventure 💕🌞
Thanks for watching! As always 💚
Florida is for the strong. Every birding trip I do, I face this stuff. Florida is wild.
It is wild, the snakes, bugs, gators...people 😂 lol
Hi Maddie, I just have to say I really enjoy your videos, very entertaining... and the banging on the yak to keep the gators away is priceless 😂. Any ways stay safe!
Always love these videos. Best bet for layers is a warm hat. 🎩
Your soliloquoys make me laugh! Beautiful river. Thanks for sharing.
Love this Maddie.
Great to see you back out there.
So umm where did your mom get the new Ranger shirt from?.;)
Follow your heart Maddie ❤️ We're with you. Love from Texas ❤❤❤
I’m so intrigued by how you’re doing the camera angle switches so seamlessly and hands free
I filmed the kayaking portions with an Insta 360! It can film every direction and then you choose which direction you want to show on screen afterwards!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces very cool
You are a topper as usual. Keep on going Maddie! I love paddling creeks but never done one with gators!
So proud of you, no matter what you choose
Be safe. That was so mean to leave us on a cliffhanger like that 😂 This whole thing is making me nervous 😬 Once I saw that first gator on day one I would have Nope-ed out so fast.
Sorry about that! The reflection never moved so it might have been a piece of trash!
Lol love the ending
The ending was classic! Nice video. You are more relaxed here. The gators will not bother you, I just hope you keep going.
Stay safe, Stay strong, Have fun! geek
Thanks so much!!
well back home. took south kaibab down to Skeleton point. my son was so happy to be hiking the grand canyon. thank you for showing anyone they too can get stuff done.!
p.s. we took a ride over in a Helicopter. that was 10 out of 10.
Let's Go!!!!!! Part 2!!!
Maddie kudos to you! Your mental toughness is off the charts. Just seeing the dark water freaks me out never mind when the sun goes down. I would be shitting my pants 🤣
It would be easier if you were to do the trip with someone.
Love watching you - Brave soul 💗
Strong woman .... 😊 suspense loaded. 😮
Gosh, I’d be more scared of a gator camping out next to the tent!
If it really was a gator, it would probably just be curious about me, not out to get me. But it was definitely unnerving!
You gave me strength to live. TMI? God this is beautiful. Bless your boyfriend.
Im so glad u r ok!♥️ 🚣🏽♀️ 😊N also i miss ur lives is there one coming soon?
More guts than me. I’d get out of there. Trips and trekking need to be safety 1st….
Haven’t heard day 3 yet. Are you ok? I sure hope your ok and safe
The videos will be out every Wednesday!! So day 3 is coming soon. Also, the trip is over now, and I’m back home!
Don’t quit, keep trekking
You should come back to northern MN for a Boundary Waters adventure!
That would be awesome!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces I’ll watch for that video in the future! Have fun on the rest of your trip! 😀
I could not sleep that close to alligators
Los caimanes 😂😂
❤❤
new sub good stuff
Thanks for the sub!
You're probably finished with your trip by now. I live about 1 mile from the river. Many canoe trips, and even a float trip on an inner tube from Arcadia to Nocatee, my butt in the water the entire way. No gator issues ever. I hope you enjoyed your trip, Peace River is beautiful. Hope you also got to hunt for some fossils.
Hope you got the $10 bucks thanks for the video 📷
Thank you for the reminder! I did get it!
8:07 that was a sweet shot
18:18 my 6 year old nephew tells me animals by sound every time I take him on a hike 😂 he's better a bird calls than I am
I was worried for you! That is a very dangerous trip for anyone. I think you should really consider bailing on that trip for your own safety...seriously. wishing you safe travels!!!!!
She's home safe already, this was two weeks ago, 🙏🏽
You are way braver than me sleeping anywhere near open water in Florida because any type of open water source like that has Gators in it. Big and small. I would not feel comfortable doing what you're doing. And I live here in Florida. It would scare the crap out of me. because I know Gators are everywhere. that there's a water source. Heck, we even have them on golf courses. And some of those are even six to 8 feet long Let me live on golf courses in the ponds. So like I said, any kind of standing or any kind of water source has can have Gators in it here in Florida. No thanks.
The Dynamics of doing these things like this alone is not usually suitable. I learned that thru test drives. I got slipped acid in a tent a few weeks ago and flipped the hell out.....bad.
So i took my dog recently.... it was a huge difference. I could sleep. And i usually felt safe.....i just could not sleep at all in the tents....(and I found ot was claustrophobia I was also suffering from being in jail.....it is real....i thought it was a excuse.
anyways..... I even took sleep pills. Nothing.
My dog is a huge difference for me.
Just tell me to shut up and I'll go away.....im use to it.
I’ve had the same thought about teaching preschoolers animal sounds. I was recently teaching my 1 year old the sounds and for first time in 5 kids I thought why is this even necessary?! From my experience it just confuses kids. My kids end up calling cows “moos” for their first couple years of life.
I always listen to my gut feelings. It sounds like the rental place gave you bad information.
Keep going. Don’t pet the gators…
Hi Maddie!
I did notice your shirt and it’s so cool she got you another one! Missing smoke on this one
Thanks for noticing the new shirt!
Girl I think that place is for alligators and panthers not people. I think that of much of Florida
GURL. Get outta there! Not liking an experience is PERFECTLY fine, right? 😉
Yeah it’s totally okay to not like an experience! But I would also be bummed out to have prepared for this trip, drove all the way down there, and then not give it a fighting chance!
If Mattie trail name is Ranger… what is her river name …???
Please wear your floatation device!
I'm already off the river, but I agree, I should have worn it!
Oh my gosh! I paddle a lot and all over the US and Canada, but your trip with alligators looks frightening! Giving me anxiety just watching you. Girl, you should have gone a little further down and paddled the Keys. All my admiration for your spunk! ❤
I'm just wondering, with all the many rivers in the country to choose from, why you chose one with "man eating alligators"?
Who said anything about man-eating alligators? :) They rarely bother humans and my outfitter said as long as they've been in business (since the 60s, I think), there hasn't been an issue on this river. That being said, acting like a large, ominous-looking animal is no big deal is easier said than done! If you're wondering why go somewhere with gators at all, Florida is pretty much the only place in the US with warm weather in March. I wanted to get outdoors but I'm not a fan of the cold!
I bet you would rather hike the AT backwards than paddle that river again!😂
I don't your lead time, the decision has already been made of course. How much aggravation do you want to deal with? How long is the river going to be there? The old axiom discretion is the better part of valoor often the best. ATB
middle°C 😆
Haha sorry I couldn't remember the formula and do some mental math at the drop of a hat!
hehe I know, I got a chuckle from it. Loving your adventures!@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces
It seems to me like you did not do enough planning for this trip.
I read all the info and personal blogs about this route, watched all the videos I could find about it, and called the outfitter with specific questions. I’m only human, this trail isn’t as well-documented as more popular ones, and there’s always going to be unexpected things coming up!
Keep going til you get eaten! Jokes aside, the drive to and from the river is hundreds of times more dangerous. Being out in nature away from humans or their machinery is the safest place you can be. I've likely hiked over ten thousand miles by now and I can attest to that. The only times I was in any real danger, and it was only a few times, was from doing something stupid. As long as you take sensible precautions you will be fine! If you are kayaking around with saltwater crocodiles that is another story. I don't blame you though, gators are scary, and should be respected.
I did not see any trees that you could not get passed yet. I suppose you would have to go ashore with the kayak and carry everything around the tree. Your need for adventure goes way beyond backpacking hikes. What is going to stop a gator from crawling up to your tent while you are sleeping. I don't understand how you film yourself one moment then film from the front the next moment. The scenery is very nice. I hope that you are able to protect yourself from danger.
are your arms sore???
My hand muscles and wrists were sore the first days, but overall I wasn't that sore. I should have been, though, looking back I see I was using terrible form!
