1:06: The fact is, the Y-Wings didn’t _lose_ their paneling, so to speak. They had sleek cowlings on them, as seen in the Clone Wars and Rebels. However, when the Rebel Alliance got their hands on them, they quickly learned that these starfighters were particularly unstable crafts. After every battle, their mechanics had to open up the Y-Wings to make sure nothing was wrong. *They had to.* Often, there would be issues with the upper gun, which was often an ion cannon (although it could be replaced with a regular laser cannon), because such weapons are very fragile and easy to misalign. So easy, that sometimes the minimal stress that general space travel put on them was enough to mandate maintenance in order for them to regain their functionality. Now, none of these issues would normally be very large, except for those blasted cowlings. They were difficult to remove and replace, and were the topic of many a Rebel mechanic’s afternoon gripe. After a while, the Alliance heard their men’s complaints, and ordered that the cowlings be permanently removed on every part of the ship except the cockpit. They left the cowlings on the cockpit because they also served as a sort of armor plating. So you see, the Y-Wings didn’t lose their paneling, but merely had them removed to dramatically simplify maintenance.
that's one awesome Y-Wing On a sidenote: R2-D2 enters a Y-Wing from the top. I'm pretty sure I seen a Droid get loaded in a ship from the bottom, but can't remember where, when or what ship. Nerd facts: Besides plating (armor), they removed the bubble turret on top and replaced it with ion canons. While doing so they shortened the nacelle extensions making the Y-Wings 7,16 meters shorter (resulting in cheaper LEGO sets :D)
Yeah, the astromech legs actually poke out of the top of the astromech socket; I have no idea why he chose to have the astromech come in from the bottom
Now we need a clone wars variant of the y-wing by this designer, specifically the blue variant from S7E12 of The Clone Wars, and with a rotating turret
The y wings panels weren't lost or destroyed, they were taken off by the men who created them, as they found that is was easier for repairs and it made it lighter faster and more agile.
@@BrickVault Yeah it is a bit ugly in my opinion too :D but MTT is still one of my favorites. Maybe because I'm a big fan of the droid army. Yep it is difficult but it is awesome to hear that you guys are thinking about making it :)
I'd like to add few things, as the author. - Please don't try to lift the ship by the head. It will snap off. It is designed to do so, otherwise something would break in the head and would be difficult to fix. As it is now, the head will snap more or less cleanly and should be easy to reattach. - The droid comes from the bottom because I wanted that square box around the head... yeah, not sure if it should go from the top or bottom, but this way it was easier. Also - to eject the droid all you need is to press on its head, it will push down the droid arms and actually lock on these, so you can extract the droid from half-hanging position. Thanks for great video, I am always waiting for these eagerly. I hope other viewers also like it. Cheers!
okay I see you guys saying this often and finally decided to speak up: the Y-wing you see in A New Hope etc is the BTL-A Y-wing. The version in the Clone Wars is the BTL-B. The original version is older both in our universe and in the Star Wars universe. The rebels were using ships that were that old. They didn't lose their plating; it's a completely different, older model with a different setup. They made improvements to the newer model to have this plating and everything.
Finally it is here and man is this awesome! Thanks guys for bringing this out together with Jerac (man everytime your models are more perfect than the last one) I will sure get this beauty build soon!
4:28 to answer your curiosity in the Clone Wars episode Nomad Droids R2 boards a Y-Wing from the top, and I think it holds true for chopper in the Rebels episode Steps Into Shadow
This Y-Wing is really awesome! My second favorite ship in Star Wars, I remember when I got the very first Lego Y-Wing in 1999, it was cool by those days standards, but after all the others that have been built in later years, it's really evolved since then! Nice new model, guys!
To keep my UCS Y-Wing, or source it to build this one? *Sigh*, such a tough decision! Excellent work as always Jerac! Have already built 3 of your designs (TIE Fighter, Advanced, and Bomber) and plan to do even more! Love your incredible detail while maintaining good model stability for MOC's. Personally like the brown pipes but feel like there wouldn't be enough color variation in the body to "de-saturate" the brown, if that makes sense. Maybe a different color? Pearl gold maybe? At least for most of the piping minus the parts that don't come in that color, then you could use brown for those. What in the world could you possibly do next?! A TIE Droid perhaps? A V-Wing (airspeeder, not the Clone Wars era one)? Personally I would be incredibly excited to see a TIE Hunter, though that might not be possible at that wing size with how small the pivots for the S-Foils would have to be. Maybe a TIE Silencer? Now that would be sick. Always excited to see you next creation, and I'm sure I'll end up buying the instructions as well. :)
Iirc, originally the Y-Wing squadron was intended to be Red Squadron while the X-Wing squadron was Blue Squadron. This changed after ILM realized that the blue color scheme wouldn’t work for the scene given that the special effects were done using blue screens. Hence why the life-size mockup was originally painted red, with the change to gold happening after construction.
Last I checked, the astromechs are top loaded in Y-Wings, just like in X-Wings. The only bottom loading ships I can think of are the N-1 Starfighter, and possibly the E-Wing (although I'm not sure about that)
There is gonna be a day when I save up enough money to buy about half of the brickvault catalog. I hope all of the views me and everyone else give to yall gets you a bit of that sweet youtube money to keep making these awesome mocs!
Tie fighters were originally blue and black but the blue screen just mad them look grey and black. The original Lego tie fighter sets were blue and black.
If I ever find the spare change for this I think I'd go for a mix between the piping colors. Maybe introduce a few more colors into the greebling as well. As is it feels a bit too polarizing to properly appear "dirty" in my eyes
Nice model, though I felt from the beginning that somegint looked strange. The detailing around the main body and cockpit is amazing as always, but the nacelles look off. After comparing with some blueprints, I think both the nacelles themselves, as well as the pylons to the aft engine rings, are way too short to be proportionate. They also seem to be slightly too big in terms of diameter.
Nacelles are okay but now when I think of that, they could be moved one stud back. Pylons indeed are too short - this is because of available options for them being really, really wrong. Hm hmm hmmm.... Thanks for input!
Looks awesome Jack! Still have the UCS Y-wing in my back log so I may have to build that before sourcing the parts for this bad boy!. Tell Ramone to keep up the good work!!😉
Damnn do I get the Ghost or these four? Also would love to see a Clone Wars Y-wing maybe customizing this to a Scum color scheme will do.A V-19, V-wing And Z-95 could be cool too in Black Sun colors of course. Also the smaller A5 Juggernaut.
Uuh I maybe wrong about this but I think the rebellion intentionally removed the panels near the engines to be fixed faster and I think the caused a lot of drag for the engines
That is amazing but guys it would be so cool to make a t 70/75 x wing the y wing engines at the end of the ship would be good for the quad engines you could make it in several colors plus Poe's orange and black with a extra build to make his make shift sunlight engine
