    Along with “ Telegraph Road “, this is one of the classiest songs DS ever did. And it’s definitely one of the best of their deeper cuts. I can recall when I first heard it and thinking, Wow ! I never knew DS had a song like this. I always loved music that sounded like it came from a murky, Humphrey Bogart movie. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I also think “ Love Over Gold “ is Dire’s best album. Nice review Brandon !

      Interesting that you call this a deep cut. From a US perspective, I totally get it. But it hit #2 on the UK chart and even rose to #1 in my home country, the Netherlands. It is a very unusual hit song, though.

    Wow….never heard this before. SO atmospheric! What great use of keyboards, bass, drums, guitar to create a soundscape of darkness and danger. If they haven’t used this in a movie, they should have. I was captured by that subtle “tst “ sound…..sounded like it was just a touch on a muted cymbal, cut short. You noticed that? What a creative peace! Great work by everyone in the band. And by you too, Brandon: What a perfect backdrop……and I loved the brief appearance of the cat! Or was it a panther? Black, of course…..😁👋😉👍

      Hello! Isn't it so amazing and original? Noir movie vibes for sure. I'm sure I heard that cymbal sound, but didn't comment on it. Thanks, just had to have a dark alley backdrop, as that was where the end section took me. Haha, thanks for acknowledging Dudley the Dark Alley Cat- he was brief and small so not sure how many saw him, especially those who watched on a cell phone screen. Thanks for watching- glad you loved it. BTW I'm having a 1 hour live premiere tomorrow at 12 noon PST if interested or available 🙂

    You can almost imagine this as background music in a Bogart movie. MK's vocal style fits the lyrics like a glove, the classical acoustic guitar a superb contrast against the synths/piano(Alan Clarke his usual masterful self). Bassist John Illsley gets the spotlight too, he was MK's best bassist(wishing Dire Straits staying together here, MK's solo work always lacked the right bassist, IMHO).
    Props to our host for his background picture
    Theatrical and proggy...yummy
    Live, even more theatrical. The version from Alchemy is superb, but, so is the one from Into the Night...a sax intro is added, and even more of a bulid up in the middle section.
    Now, our host can go listen to Telegraph Road and Private Investigations together on his own time, and experience one of the best album sides ever done

    • @retroreactions....
      @retroreactions....  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, what a vibe...very film noir like you said and as Goytá stated before. I'll take a theatrical and proggy entrée any day! Added another vote for that '93 live performance. Ah, so the 2 songs take up a whole side of the album...Great idea, and in the dark this time 🙂

    Thanks! I wasn't so much into Dire Straits before I heard this one. This intro reminds me of Beethoven's moonlight sonata, this is a beautiful song from them, beautiful acoustic guitar by the way, and a classical feel with Grand piano (and marimba :) . And then comes a progression and surprises. My favorite from Dire straits for sure. Good listening choice Brandon!

    I always loved this take on the classic Humphrey Bogart detective story. I even wrote a sort of prose/poem send up of it set in a garden where the detective and the lowlife characters he meets have plant and flower names. I called it Privet Investigations. It was rather long. I must look it up again. I love Mark Knopfler's world weary quasi American crossed with Newcastle upon Tyne accent delivery.

    I must have listened to this album more than DSOTM when I was a teen. Which is saying something. The production is amazing. Add Billy Joel’s 1984 Wembley concert I had on VHS & there’s the greatest musical influences which, today, still remain my favourites. I’m fortunate to have seen them all live, also.
    I’m looking forward to, Industrial Disease & especially, It Never Rains. Think I’ll listen to that, now.

    i do think it is actually about an investigator rather than the narrator looking at his own situation- just goes to show how people hear a song differently - i hear it as the more cases he does where he uncovers treachery and treason - theres always an excuse for it but he never can get used toit -the more disallusioned he becomes from the cumulative effect. the song exudes world weariness. I would add my voice to the request for the live version , the on the night version is probably best, you will get so much out of watching them play . the live versions are invariable longer and the instrumentation is always so good. You also might try the song where do you think you are going? its a lesser known song but brilliant - every emoytion you feel when you realise someone is leaving you done with all the persuasive of MK -understated but beautifuly written.

      I disagree. I loved Alchemy Live when it came out, and it would have been amazing to be at those gigs. That said, I now find many of those versions bloated and messy. To go right back to their first single as an example, the original studio take of Sultans Of Swing is pretty much perfect: lean, crisp and concise.

    Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler are amazing. I knew I made a wise choice by subscribing to your channel :). Private Investigations, along with Brothers in Arms and Telegraph Road are my three favorites, with Private Investigations being my favorite. It's such a chilling and forlorn piece of art, and when the marimba enters the fray, it always sends goosebumps throughout my body. Of course, Mark's guitar work is, as always, the glue that tells the story and holds everything together and where it should be.
