In our HP ProDesk 400 G4 Mini Project TinyMiniMicro guide, we go into the features of what may be the worst value we got from a unit thus far. We discuss the differences between the lower-end ProDesk 400 G4 Mini series and the ProDesk 405 G4 Min (AMD version), the ProDesk 600 G4 Mini (one step up Intel version), and the EliteDesk 800 G4 (higher-end version.) We even found a hidden DisplayPort in our unit.

@@tatadodo3613 I haven’t integrated it into a server quite yet, but as a normal Windows computer it’s quite nice. I would use my own copy of Windows for it though. Some of the drivers that HP forces Windows Update, specifically the audio drivers, were causing performance issues.

I purchased 2 of these units @ $90 each (2022-10-24). Specs are HP ProDesk 400 G4 DM Mini Desktop, i3-8100T 3.1GHz, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, VGA, Dual Display Ports, wireless, Windows 10 Pro. I only plan to hook these up to a TV and run youtube with an adblocker (wireless keyboard & mouse) These HP mini-computers are great for such a purpose. Plenty fast, around 90% PassMark compared to my Xeon x5650 (wow). I want to thank ServeTheHome for these mini-computer comparisons. I watched this video after I purchased the units and when he said bottom 3 on the value I was worried. Then I heard his reasons. Slower USB 3 ports (who cares other than hooking up an external storage unit (something most people will never do anyway ... and why would you really need that speed?), 2 USB 2.0 ports (keyboard and mouse OR printer - again who cares). Hard drive bay that requires you to remove screws (again who cares, how often are you switching out the SSD?) Realtek NIC, okay it's not Intel but most applications expect RealTek NIC's even in the diagnostic world). So you can't upgrade to Windows 11 - when that time comes I'll get an 8th or better mini-computer at a cheap price (only if forced in my application). So don't let this review scare you, at the right price it's an incredible machine).

I picked up a Prodesk 400 G5 with an i5-9500t for $275 and it's been a great little machine for the money. 6 real cores is nothing to sneeze at even if they're power limited. Actually, intel XTU does actually let you extend the turbo time limit on this board, though the end result of that discovering just how wonky HP programmed the fan curve. The fan has so much lag that it let's the CPU hit about 90C before waking up, realizing it needs to do a job, then proceeds to whine its head off. If your load then stops it will continue blowing full tilt for far longer than it needs to as well.

    • @ServeTheHomeVideo

Does your unit has vpro support? According to Intel website I5 9500t shoud have it, but with the realtek nic I am not sure this specific model has it. It depends also on the bios (I have an elitedesk 800 g3 mini with an i7 6700t and there is full vpro support).
I am asking because here in Germany there is a sale this weekend for that prodesk 400 g5 mini with I5 9500t and I am tempted to buy one).

@@ServeTheHomeVideo Thanks for the answer. Let me explain my situation: I have two EliteDesk 800 mini with i7 6700t (so 4 cores, 8 threads) and one Dell Optiplex 7040 micro with a i5 6500t. My plan is to build a Proxmox cluster with three nodes. But today there is an offer for ProDesk 400 G5 (with an i5 9500T, 2 years of warranty, 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD NVME, and Windows 10 Pro license) that is quite tempting me, and I was thinking I could buy it and resell my Dell. I would do it because of the 9500T cpu (but I probably would lose vpro, and I would downgrade two USB 3 ports to two USB 2 ports, plus downgrading from the intel NIC to the Realtek one). Not sure if it is worth.

Beware of other HP surprises too. I recently purchased an Elitedesk 800 G5 which came complete with NVME SSD. Problem was, the system is PCIE version 3 and the supplied NVME drive was PCIE V2. Huge performance drop right there. So don't fret about buying a used one of these systems if it has a spinner drive (By the way, WD Black is the best of these). You should determine what generation the PCIE bus is, and then buy the fastest matching NVME drive. I replaced the HP supplied unit with a Gen3 drive and improved R/W from 1GB/s/700MB/s to 3GB/s/2GB/s.

It came without wifi/bluetooth so I added an intel 7265, which is weird: windows won't detect the wifi (bluetooth works just fine) and ubuntu won't connect any bluetooth device (wifi works just fine). Obviously far less powerful machines but at an insanely low price and they have interesting features like support for ECC RAM apparently. I tested them with HPL/OpenBLAS and got 10.16 GFLOPS which puts them around a Pi 4 in that test. TDP is 15W, I measure ~6W idle and they are fanless. Would be interesting to see what you'd do with them, they should easily handle something like Unifi Controller I would think. I plan to use them to learn about kubernetes.
