I used a drill bit to lock the flywheel, but the flywheel locking tool do make it a lot easier. Had to fiddle with the locking with the drill through the casing, and locate the hole in the flywheel a few times to realease the bolt on the crank. The white lines don't match up again before a certain amount of revolutions. Do it 3 times as stated and check that the crank and cam are aligned at the marks every time.
