Exactly. I've always described her voice on The Open Door songs such as this one, Sweet Sacrifice, and All That I Am Living For to sound fantastically sour. It sounds painful and raw and amazing. Smoky is another word to describe how it sounds.
Whilst as a listener I don't agree that she has vocal "imperfections" - in fact her voice to me oozes such control and an innate sense of beauty in her projection - I absolutely can see what you mean still. I've listened to The Open Door close to 200 times and I'm having a difficult time deciding which is my favorite song. Seriously!! This album is that freaking great! Lose Control, Snow White Queen, Like You are definitely at the top but I think Good Enough takes the top spot. For an album to be so dark yet to end on something so positive and hopeful! Evanescence (Amy Lee) knocked it out of the park and tore the cover off the ball with this record! What an outstanding album!
Fallen and The Open Door are definitely the best Evanescence albums, as all the songs are really good with pretty and distinctive melodies, plus these songs are perfect for me as they reflect me The Queen / The Snow-White / The God(dess) / The Lady / The Princess / The Leader / The Mar(y) / The Star etc and they are also written on higher notes that are perfect for my voice, as I naturally have the highest and whitest / lightest / brightest voice ever, being the coloratura sopranino, so these songs are easy for me when it comes to range, and I even used to sing them in a higher pitch, and somehow I could easily sing along with the original tracks in the background, even though my natural voice / tone matches the voices of the 2nd Nightwish singer that sang Escapist and Seven Days To The Wolves and Amaranth etc and the 1st singer from Skáld that sang Grótti and Hross and SæKonunger etc the most, but when I would sing in a different way or in a different pitch, my voice would blend in well even with a mezzo soprano voice, so I guess that’s why the difference in tones didn’t distract me, as I would also do darker tones sometimes, though they are still harder than most other songs due to the longer notes, so singing along with these Evanescence songs and WT songs and Nightwish songs has helped me a lot with controlling the longer notes, so I used to know all these lyrics automatically about a decade ago, as I used to sing them hundreds of times back then, but now it seems like I forgot a lot of the lines or at least the order in which they are sung, so I started listening to them again while reading the lyrics, as I am trying to re-learn all these lyrics before I end up forgetting everything, and it should be easy for me to re-learn them, as I still know a lot of lines, so it should all be coming back after listening to these several times over the course of a month or so, as it’s more like, refreshing my memory, rather than having to learn new lyrics from scratch - but I am also trying to learn lots of new lyrics from scratch in multiple other languages that are newer languages that I am not fluent in yet, such as Norse and Gothic and Icelandic and Faroese and Dutch and Norwegian and Welsh and Breton and Cornish and Forn Svenska etc, as I am learning all these heavenly Norse / Germanic / Nordic languages and Celtic languages etc, and memorizing lots of lyrics also helps learning the languages faster, so it feels like my hern is having one of those moments when I keep forgetting lines and words and I cannot focus and it feels like I cannot learn anything sometimes etc, but I’m sure it’s just temporary, as I am trying to learn so many languages at the same time, so once I get fluent in the newer languages, I’m sure it will all go back to normal!

It was not always been easy to me but got through it all and gained my self control back. Finally i had met someone who could understand and help me get through it all.

Damn, yet another great song from Evanescence. It's so hauntingly beautiful and seductive, like being ensnared in the web of a black widow. I'm not sure what the intended meaning is, or if there even is an intended meaning, but if I had to guess it's about wanting to let go and surrender control. Maybe the singer is a control freak and always needs to be in control, but wishes just once she could relinquish control and be okay with not being in control. I can relate to this, I'm a bit of a control freak myself lol, but sometimes I wish I could just relax and let go. It could also be the singer is fighting the temptation to do something "bad" like drugs or alcohol or sex. And she wishes she could just give into temptation, just once, but knows that doing so would have negative, possibly irreversible, consequences. Either way great song, I adore Amy Lee's voice. There's something about her tonal quality that's so unique and entrancing. I can easily pick it out, even when I don't know the song is by Evanescence. Also it is just me or is the way she sings "if we play very quiet, my lamb/Mary never has to know" weirdly sexual? Like... I'm straight but that line has me questioning my sexuality lol.

That's one of the many reasons I connect with Amy as an artist and her work so much, all the turmoil she's experienced in her life and career and how she's poured it, her feelings and emotions into the music, and tried to rise above it and come out the other side. This it really a great song. Amy throws just about the whole toolbox at it. It's just about everything Amy does really well. If you're going to tell someone what song is Evanescence this would have to be one you'd have to pick. It shows what she does best. I keep telling people The Open Door is who Amy lee is musically more than Fallen. Fallen is like stick figures put up again the painting of the Last Supper (The Open Door). Stick figures are fine in their place I guess. But The Last Supper is a master. Every song on The Open Door was well crafted with all the little things that just fills the sound like this one.
