  • Here is Part 1 of "How to build a Padawan 360 control system"
    In this three part series, I take you through all the basic components and how to wire them together to get a complete droid control system working.
    Part 2 is here: • Padawan 360 build Part 2
    Part 3 is here: • Padawan 360 build - part3
    Thanks to Dan Kraus for writing the code and allowing me to make this video.
    Dan's Github: github.com/dan...
    Thanks also to the UKR2 builders club, without whom I would probably be much richer ;-)
    Link to Sparkfun mp3/Drivesort video: • How to use Sparkfun mp...
    Link to full Padawan presentation (Thanks to Michael Baddeley): • Padawan 360 overview f...
    Part 1 covers basic hardware, connectivity and getting audio working. Part 2 will cover drive control hardware and connections. Part 3 is final wiring.
    Please note this is the UNO version, if you are running a MEGA, your pinouts will be different.

    Steve, You mention a "Y" lead in your video to connect power to both the Uno and the MP3 Trigger using barrel connectors. Do you know where to source these cables? I've searched without success.

    I am confused on the sketches as I am not as familiar with Arduino yet. On Dan's Github what should I be downloading for sketches? Is there one or multiples? It would be great if you did a video of uploading the required sketches onto the Arduino :) Just need more details for us newbies.

      Fair comment, best thing is click the green "code" button which downloads a zip of everything, then unzip that file and go to the "body" folder for you arduino type ie uno or mega. The ino sketch will be in there, and you should also now have all the libraries in case some were missing.

    my sparkfun MP3 player did not come with pin headers. Would it be okay just to solder on some m-2-m jumpers so the other end can plug into the arduino or do you think I should try soldering in the headers??

    If I’m running 24v, dropping to 12v and to 5v can I use the same common ground for all of them or do I need a separate 5v common ground and a separate 12v common ground ?

      I would suggest visiting Dan's github and downloading the sketch. In the comments it lists the hardware required, having said that, what you see in the video, plus the drive and dome controllers, is about it. This one will have an amplifier, speakers and a fuse box plus mains breaker switch installed.

    I was thinking of hooking this up to a 20v cordless drill battery. Would I need to change anything from your system to work with that? I know you mentioned it can go up to a higher voltage, but I don't want to mess anything up.

    • @ImperialLightandMagic
      @ImperialLightandMagic  3 года назад

      So long as you build it this way, and your amplifier can take up to 24v (I use TPA3116 mono amps which take 24v, check specs on yours) you should be fine. Speed may be a little high but you adjust that in the code

    So here's a question about the sound effects, how does that exactly work? I'm assuming the sound files are on that Micro SD Card you got loaded up on the mp3 trigger correct? I'm building a C Series droid so the average astromech sounds aren't exactly gonna work for what I built.

    • @ImperialLightandMagic
      @ImperialLightandMagic  2 года назад

      Yes, the individual sounds are on the microsd card, and named with a numerical start (ie 01scream.mp3, 02chortle.mp3 etc ). The arduino code then calls these sounds from whichever button or combo you assign. However it only calls by track number rather than name, so you also may benefit from watching my “drive sort” utility video which goes into more depth.

      @@ImperialLightandMagic Alright I have a problem. I thought for the last week it was a faulty board but it's not. I soldered two male connectors in a serial chain, negative to positive then I took the positive and negative wires and put them into the fuse box.
      I get power to the Uno but no power to trigger. I went back from square one and I had actually flipped which connector went into which plugin, and I got super excited cause I could press the sample button and it would play sound. Then I realized I have no power to the Uno at all. Power to everything else, Trigger, Sabertooth and Syren, but not the Uno.
      I thought maybe I did a bad solder, grabbed a new set of pre-wired barrel connectors, did the series chain again, and low and behold, STILL got the same issue.
      I'm really scratching my head on this one.

      @@Hikuro2pnt0 Hi there, I don't actually use the "Y leads" any more to provide power, check some of my later videos, but in brief, I use the Sabertooth to provide 5v out to the arduino and the Syren 5v out to the sparkfun mp3.

    • @Hikuro2pnt0
      @Hikuro2pnt0 2 года назад

      @@ImperialLightandMagic I see, I actually just ended up using two male connectors individually to power both boards. The only issue now I'm coming across is not getting the audio to play via the controller. This warrants further investigation I think.

    would you happen to know why my controller is not working with it?
    sound plays when i hit the Trigger on the Mp3 trigger.

      Is it the same sparkfun mp3 player? Have you got the sparkfun library installed (I doubt the sketch would upload). Might be worth double checking you have a common ground and that you wire from Tx on arduino goes to Rx on sparkfun. If you are using a different type of mp3 board, you'd need an appropriate library.

    • @EpicProvider
      @EpicProvider 4 года назад

      @@ImperialLightandMagic yeah it's exact same board you have, and tx to rx and grd to gnd
      i ordered a different shield and receiver to see maybe something with the receiver if not being found by the arduino. if not i can return them.

      It's an interesting looking board, and you might be able to use it to control servo movement/animation, but as far as the motor drivers go, it just wouldn't have enough punch for a R2 sized droid in my humble opinion.

      You may be missing one or more of the required libraries listed below. You may have to hunt for them maybe on dimension engineerings' website for sabertooth and syren, mp3trigger maybe on sparkfun site and xboxrecv not sure, a quick google for "xboxrecv arduino library" and I'm sure the solution will present itself.
