In this 4th installment of Making an R2-D2, we are adding the dome motor, the electronic brain, adding hinged panels, and syncing the remote control.
1. Install Dome Motor
In order to get Artoo's head to spin, we will use the lazy susan we installed in a previous step. To get the large bearing to spin remotely, Josh cut a large circular gear rack and a smaller cog to turn it. The larger rack fit onto the lazy susan's mounting hardware while the smaller cog and an accompanying bracket were attached to a small 12v DC motor. Once secured inside the body cavity, I could control the voltage to the motor and Artoo's head was spinning! Now this feature will eventually be controlled through a wiring harness attached to a slip ring and connected to a control board. The slip ring prevents the wiring from getting twisted up inside the dome.
2. Print New Panel Hinges
First let me say, these hinges so far, have been the hardest part of this entire build. I bought the two-piece hinges that the astromech.org forums recommended but I could not get them to consistently work. The problem with Artoo's hinged panels is that the dome panels are concave and sit at an angle. That means the a properly working hinge must be able to push the panel outward and clear the two-layer thick dome. The recommended hinges weren't working and I struggled to find a suitable replacement. Someone recommended that I use a 3d-printable hinge set that came with the files for a mounting template. I was so happy when the first one worked perfectly. I printed a whole bunch of them and mounted all of the body and dome panels!
3. Connect the Electronic Brain
The electronic system for this droid is, surprise, complex. I'm sure I could eventually figure out how to do it all from scratch, but that is silly talk and totally unnecessary when a group of accomplished builders made it easy. Members on the astromech.org forums created a control system called "Shadow" which uses a single 18v battery to power the entire droid. There are systems that use 18v, 12v, and 5v so I had to connect several microcontrollers through volts regulators to power each subsystem. The Shadow's Arduino sketch helps control all the different motors, the servos, load different sounds. It also has the bluetooth connectivity to a Playstation controller.
But Bob, He Still Needs Feet!
I know. I'm working on it. The feet, while not technically complex, are the most robust part of the droid because they take the most abuse. I am making them out of thicker aluminum so its taking longer.I wouldn't have been able to any of this project without the amazing help of the builders on astromech.org. I'll have certain pieces linked in this article, but I got all of the guidance, parts list, and specialty items from members in those forums. If you are interested at all in making your own R2-D2, go check them out.

It made me smile when you said "I can't help but put the actual dome on here and just watch it spin." I remember when I was at that stage on my R2 and I did exactly the same thing. It was a milestone for me and a great feeling. Congratulations Bob, you're making great progress!
Thanks, this is a huge undertaking.
How’d u reply 15 hours before
@@Iliketomakestuff Yep, but totally worth it in so many ways. Building it was a great experience and I learned a wide variety of new skills. Then after finishing it it's wonderful to show people (especially kids) and see their faces light up!
@@hpsorzmobile3828 As a patron I get to see the videos early on Patreon. Proud to be a patron of this channel. Bob, Josh and the whole crew deserve all of the support they can get!
HPsorzmobile Patreon bro!
This is the perfect project; it's nerdy, there's making, electronics, problem solving, and computer programming, but above all it serves no purpose except to just make you smile... and I did when Bob got that dome spinning. Very happy for Bob (and slightly jealous), thanks for taking us along on the journey. I am sorry that we (my girlfriend and I) won't get to say "Hi" to Bob and Jenny this year at Makers Central now that it has been cancelled but hopefully we'll get to see ALL of the ILTMS team at Makers Central in 2021!!
I have only just now discovered that this series exists, so if you excuse me I've got some binging to do.
I discovered it on ep. 3
I was today years old when I found this series
I've finished the series so far and I want more! ;__;
Follow Bob if you don't.. this man makes the best videos on RUclips
ive been here since before ep 1 dropped! i love it!
It just makes me so happy to see how much Bob enjoys his creation already. If you are reading this, i've been watching your videos for a few years now and love you and your channel so much. Your projects are really cool and satisfying to watch. You also seem like a great father and a wonderful person. Please don't ever change! I really hope there will be a part 5 soon. Anyway have a wonderful day everybody :)
He needs to add a projector, that’d be amazing
Glad to see R2 working look great
Man, I wish I could like this more than once. Things are getting serious!
One thing I love about creating your own astromech or any droid within the Star Wars universe, is the amount of creativity that goes into making them.
While watching this, I was smiling as much as Bob was. His excitement is so genuine. This is truly a labor of love and it shows. Looks great. Can’t wait to see him roll on the Omni-wheels.
I know he says it everytime on this series how long everything takes with this project but man the work he put into this one has to be hardest yet. Having a lot of troubles and asking help from forums, that probably takes days to get answers! Can’t wait for it all to come together! 🙌🏻
Bob - One thing to double check is that your batteries have a low voltage cutoff. Some battery platforms have built in low voltage protection, but a lot do not. I'm not sure about Dewalt, but if they don't, you'll need to add one between your adapter and your 20 volt bus. Otherwise, you risk overdraining the battery, which in the case of lithium can destroy the battery.
It's people like this who makes me think we will have R2D2's around in not many years.
Not even joking, I could see someone build a droid like this who could map rooms by doing 360s, take voice commands and so on, maybe even show hologram's like the one Princess Leia stored in R2D2.
When you make something really cool like this, and then you make it work, your laugh is very contagious. It makes me smile watching you be so happy. Thank you!
Awesome update video! Glad to see all of the progress you have made in more detail. It is looking aweeeeeesome. I see a possible random amount of spinning R2 heads in the future...maybe blooper moments? Lol
Waited so long for this man.
Same
He probably feels the same! Cant beleive how well it turned out!
my dudes same same !
SAME
I doubt I will ever own an R2 but I'm loving this series. It is very cool to see all that goes into this build.
I'll definitely own one
@@JuanRodriguez-py2yl ok
I agree this series is awsome
I am absolutley loving this series thanks
Great work on the rear panel. My all aluminum R2-D2 uses magnets to hold the rear panel in place. After ten years of use the magnets have weakened and the rear panel skins have started to separate at the edges. (Plus countless sings and dents). You’ve inspired me to fix this as I’ve been using white electrical tape to help keep that back panel in place for events for a few months!
I feel like you got a lot done in this update to making R2 look really finished. I was so excited when i saw this video went up. Can't wait for the next update. :)
Can’t wait for the Jimmy Diresta R2 sound board to be added lol. Great job sooooo happy to see this coming along.
Me to
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Glad your still working on this! 😀
Your videos got me working in the workshop and building stuff!!! Thanks BOB!!!
You are strong and wise, Bob, and I am very proud of you.
Listened to the pod cast on the way to work this morning and got to watch the video at lunch. Great job Bob - will share this to our robotics team.
Awesome, thank you!
Just what I needed this morning, coffee and Bob totally Geeking out and that put a smile on my face as you are having a blast working on the R2-D2project which is coming along very nicely. Thank you for the smiles
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow amazing work Bob
You, sir, are an artist of the highest order. Hats off to you!
Some idea for your controller: saw the shape and it really reminded me of a lightsaber. Maybe it would be possible to hide it in a lightsaber hilt once you are done, this way you could control your R2D2 "undercover"
That'd be cool! one of the benefits of these little controllers is that they can fit in your pocket, so you can be super stealthy with the controls
@@Iliketomakestuff Stealth is definitely a benefit. I used SHADOW on my build of Hardware Wars' Artie Deco, and it's fun to make people wonder who is controlling him. Unlike when I had a giant 3d printed controller for him at Dragon Con, so everyone wondered if I was driving the nearby R2. It's also good for making people focus on the character (and stop asking to control it.) I'll be using it again on my R2.
@@aetherdyne oof. That feels a bit rude to ask for a go driving your thing, they probably can't do to much damage but still... That just has to be one of the things you never do
aetherdyne POLICE say the police have hyetyiier kifhhfsaa
3D printing really is incredible! So cool to watch you fix that issue with the dome hinges.
Thank you for this. I've been wanting to make my own R2 for years but never knew where to start. After watching this series, I think I can actually do it.
I had just watched through the first three videos on this and was like, “ok I need to watch part 4”. Checked back two hours later and part 4 was up! So excited!!
Simply awesome!!!
Its satisfying seeing Bob so happy in the thumbnail.
“We’re gonna make R2-D2’s head spin”
R2-D2: “WOOOOOOOOOW”
You the goat in building my guy
Yesssss totally awesome can’t wait for the next video!!!
This is simply awesome!!
Watching your assembly, it looked like you were using a lot standard nuts and not lock nuts (granted a lot of those shots were test fit assembly). You will find R2 vibrate a lot rolling along and non locking nuts have a bad habit of falling out at the worst of times, and like to find their ways into electronics and batteries too. Looking great and can’t wait to see more of your progress!
It's all coming together very nicely. Can't wait to see it in action when it's finished.
It's looking great, can't wait to see the next part, but it's already feels like r2, and the clever solution with the 3d printed hinges was great
This is an awesome project!
Great work Bob! A recommendation for your wiring - put a low voltage cut off just after your power switch so you don't discarge your battery too much. If they get charged to low they won't recharge again, effectivly killing the battery.
Really great project, Bob. So much work and problem solving involved. Just plain cool.
Gotta say that this build is totally off the freaking charts! Can't wait to see the finished version! May the force be with you Bob!! 😉😉😂😂👍👍
Awesome work Bob! Welcome to the droid world!
Now, that looks soooooo coollll!!!👍
So awesome, Bob! You have got to be geeked!
Seriously awesome!!
Looks fantastic
Great progress
wow man it looks so good !
how cool is that!!
thank you for sharing sincerely!
Good to see your R2 coming along.
i like the progress of R2 nice work done 👌 👍
Bob you look like a kid at christmas when you got r2's head to spin lol its always fun to watch someone build something that they are really interested in great video
Pretty cool
I like how your beard becomes slightly longer at 13:22.
Really shows how much thought, effort and time you put in to R2
Nice Alec Steele Shirt!!
Easily the best use of a PS Move controller I've ever seen!
Your dedication to crafting and making cool things really inspires me to get back into making a few things for myself. I have an apartment so I have to be limited in what I make and how I make it.
Nice work!
Incredible work. I can’t wait to see the final product.
I just found this page today and I feel honored to be watching your 365th video bro
Amazing job man!!!!
Awesome!
I need to make one!
Just a thought. If you have enough space you could make some sort of holder for an extra battery so you can quickly swap and not have to mess with having too many batterys in your bag or wherever you store it.
YESSSS!! WE BACK BABY!!!
I love this project so much. Can’t wait to see R2 done!
Hi Bob, I was the winner of the arrow fastener giveaway, thank you very much for being part of this promotion.
What! For real?? Very cool, enjoy!
On top of making R2D2, you also made the PS Move useful! I actually haven't used the move but apparently it wasn't good.
SUPER COOL!!!
Yessssss finally. He’s alive. 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
Stationary, but alive!
Absolutely LOVE this R2 series 🤓👍
Awesome stuff Bob, nice progress! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 ... Great idea using the DeWalt battery and adapter! .... Been waiting to see those dome hinges in action since you mentioned them on Making It.
You know your workstation my dream place
Amazing progress! Next you should do Claptrap!
I love watching you nerd out to star wars stuff!
Who gives a thumbs down!!??? 😔 Awesome Artoo build!!
Man these are my absolute favourite ILTMS videos. Love watching how excited you are to build R2!
Glad you like them!
Josh is back !!
I love the intro where r2 says weoooooooow
love your vids you inspire me
Thanks!
Looks amazing! Great work.
Thanks a lot!
This is amazing!
I'm so bummed that this is such a long project for us to watch but it's coming out beautifully you're such a fun guy to watch
My gf love it ! Keep doing the great work😎
Watching you work through the build difficulties got me thinking 'what would I use a robot of R2's size for'. I am thinking this would be an interesting exercise and over the next while I am going to try to come up with a list of functions I'd want my R2 unit to perform. A twist may be to let the functions dictate the morphology of the robot. Any way a great video. I always seem to greatly enjoy your productions, thank you for producing them!
Finally I waited a long time for this video
I recognise the grin that means, "I'm making a piece of Star Wars come alive!" Awesome work, Bob. Little R2 is coming together brilliantly. Any chance he could come to Makers Central 2021?! :-D
This is totally awesome. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, will do!
This project is such an investment, it's crazy
That’s awesome 👏🏻😎
Looks awesome :) Making a R2-D2 is definitely a challenging project.
Wow you were able to create me..... Impressive.
Hey Bob, since you have all these awesome boards and stuff inside him anyway, maybe you should place the boards you need to modify into the access panels so that when they open, they have more than just empty space, they have real circuit boards and stuff. Just an idea!
great job!
very cool
Man you are awesome! This series of the R2D2 build is epic 👍👍
Can’t wait for the next video in 6 months
I don’t like star wars but I’ve loved this build! The intricacy and craftsmanship is amazing!
have to go watch parts 1-3 now
