Ever consider that maybe, the whole SW story is being told BY R2D2 in a robo-bar? He’s in all the movies, and is the hero… just like a guy telling a story.
@@tringalij I have never looked at it from this point of view, but if I do, I would change the bar into an auditorium in which thousands of listeners are focused on talking about R2D2. In my opinion, someone should make a copy of R2's entire memory, just in case.
Fascinating how such information gets misinterpreted, only years after inception. Imagine how much history is actually 'accurate' when considering these mistakes.
I immediately thought this when mentioned. The robots in, 'Silent Running', didn't look anything like R2-D2, however, you understand the concept of having a, 'buddy', droid there to help when they can.
R2 deserves his popularity. I've lost count of the neat and emotional lore tid bits of his story. One more emotional post pointed out that R2 both watched Laih be born in episode 3 and watched her pass away in episode 9. The camera angle and lighting was able to imply sad emotions in that very last screenshot of R2 and Laih.

1:04 actually the 3 robots Huey, Dewey, and Louie were from the movie Silent Running. Those robots inspired R2D2. Silent Running’s Huey, Dewey, and Louie were named after the Disney characters
R2 was the emotive chorus. 3PO was the classic greek. But R2 was so fun to interpret what he bleeped. It was always on an emotive note. From "OK" (good), to "Ooooh noooo" his way of saying "I've got a bad feeling about this.".
I coulda swore I saw him activate one of those two little blue "arms" attached horizontally on the front. I forget what he was doing with that, I'll have to go back and watch the movies again.
It's sad that the only times we got to see him use those rocket boosters in his legs was in Attack of the Clones in the Droid Factory scene and in the hangar scene against those 2 Battle Droids in Revenge of the Sith and after that was the last and only time we ever saw them.
In the future I could imagine R2' type robots being used to both perform the tasks humans no longer wish to and being used as an alternative to guide/seeing and hearing dogs to assist disabled people. And go further still in performing tasks such as cleaning, home repairs, cooking, etc.
Little known fact, R2-D2 was originally built by a mad scientist called Graeme Garden, under the designation of EB-GB. Also, I'd like to vote for a 3D model of the Nostromo from Alien. Very hard to find good internal schematics for it.
R2D2 is made-up and filled with pure excellence! I remember seeing him and C3PO on screen like it was yesterday. They were our introduction to the Star Wars universe in A New Hope. With all the new AI being developed I have hopes for a real life R2D2 robot being produced that mimics everything that the "real" R2D2 can do (minus all of his weapons and his boosting thrusters of course).
some of the other cool things that a R2 unit could do was to have it's head detached when there wasn't room for the whole R2 without lose of it's brain. The other is that R2D2 (I'm not sure about the others) could extend it's "neck" to fit in a slot that was too tall for him like when he was in the Naboo fighter. I love how the creators thought through those little details that few would even think about! The biggest question I'd love to ask George Lucas is if R2D2 never had a memory wipe, why hasn't he ran out of data storage? Did R2 have to go in to the shop every so often and get an upgrade to his hard drives? I'd also want to ask, why didn't R2 tell anyone that Vader was Anikin, wasn't R2 aware of what was going on?
Yeah, I knew about it but decided not to animate the detached head and why wasn't his memory wipe, I'm assuming George Lucas probably avoid this subject matter.
with Halloween here in the U.S. it could have been fitting to have a headless R2 unit running around. ;P thinking about the memory issue, what if the Star Wars universe had figured out quantum computers? That way they would be able to store data at the atomic scale instead of the nano scale that we use today. Yes I'm over thinking fiction but I find it fun and good for the mind.

You missed his light saber launching system. I think you may find footage in the Clone Wars animated cartoons showing it holds more then one. Easy to find footage is in ROTJ when he launches Luke's saber to him near the sarlac pit. I'm pretty sure he had a cable launcher and a body mounted arc welder that he attempted to zap a monkey with. His feet were capable of being magnetized too.
and retro-rockets in the prequels that he clearly doesn't have in the original. Maybe the Rebels added a few extras to the "swiss army knife on wheels" when the Rebels repaired him towards the end of A New Hope.
