Big props for finishing such a daunting and large project. Coming from the perspective of mostly working on 2-3 week projects, this is very inspirational! Too bad the YT algo is such a dingbat about multiparters. Thanks for sharing the journey Bob & team!
I know you said this would probably be the last video of R2 but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would like an update on any upgrades even if it's a year or so down the road. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Bob/gang. Been enjoying your channel for years now. Never commented. But I felt I needed to tell you how impressed I am with your accomplishment. I’m a bit older than you guys. I actually saw the first Star Wars in the theater as a boy. It’s an amazing memory I share with so many others. I thank you for making me feel like a kid again with this series. It’s almost like seeing an old friend again. Not much makes me smile anymore. I’m not unhappy, just a mellow dude! But when one of those movies begins with that John Williams fanfare music, that smile shows up again. You just did the same. So, thanks once again. Oh, and Josh, nice “Wilhelm” scream effect with the clamp graphics. Perfect touch. 😁. Troy
Turns out this is the droid I was looking for. It's been a long haul, but worth the wait for every step. Congrats on bringing everybody's favorite droid to life. Thanks for sharing!
I know its silly, the whole thing is amazing..but the usb port is my personnal favorite thing on this project. Imagine having an R2 unit plugged into your computer ! Unbelievable
So happy to see this one pop up! I'll be the guy to ask the tacky question. Do you have a rough estimate of how much you spent on the build? I know it'll be hard to figure out exactly on something like this but If I was going to build one, how much would you estimate it to cost?
So happy to see him come together! I never got my R2 mobile, he just sits by my desk making blinking lights.. But I'll get to it eventually. I just received my slip ring and dome motor not so long ago so I want to program some "random" movements through that with arduino. Last summer I made myself a Han in Carbonite, definitely a fun project you could do, lots of wood working, some electronics.. much simpler than R2 but SO rewarding.
This was so fun to see. It’s been a labor of love and it has to be cool to be at a place where R2 is “done”. Congrats on completing this. So glad you shared it with us too.
Bob, You inspire all of us who watch your videos. I wish I still had nimble fingers to work on projects like these. I enjoy all of the videos you share. Thank you! Felix
I appreciate how this video shows that it is possible to come back to projects that haven’t progressed in a while. I bought a 3D printer kit five years ago from my local makerspace, and it has been daunting to resume.
I'm a touch behind on the podcast but I was just listening to 281 where you were talking about the feet being loose. It came out great, long road for sure. Thanks for taking us along.
I'm so chuffed for you O-Bob-wan Klag-nobi, well done for setting a property finish line and hitting it. It's been a hell of a journey with that droid.
YES! You know the mantra - it'll never be "finished..." I already have an R6 Astromech but your build inspired me to make an R2-style. Can't wait to see more!
Bob, this is awsome! While watching I came up with an idea if you wanted to add some practical functionality to R2: a big battery pack/powerbank inside his belly so you can charge some tools outside or something:)
Wow. Amazing dedication. Also, something that helped me was you being honest about sometimes having to do things twice to get it the way you want it. Thanks.
The perfect way to start my morning! We'd totally watch an update video in the future if you did one to show any upgrades and the reactions from people at con's if you take him out and about.
Way to go Bob! He looks beautiful! And you're right, you're never really finished with R2-D2. I keep telling myself I am going to add movement to all of the front panels on mine but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Someday.
I personally would love to see some shorts when you add a little something to the Droid. Kinda like an eye candy of before, middle and working part after.
Inspirational! I create wild things, but only for looks, because none of them really work. I would love to do something like this, but man….such a project! I’ve followed this particular build from the beginning, and you have done an amazing job! Kudos!
I hope it's not the last video about R2D2, I'd love to see another one in, say, 3-5 years when he is really kind of finished! Awesome project, thanks for undertgaking it and sharing it with us so generously, Bob!
Currently up to my eyeballs building a house, but once that is done I am really looking forward to building a "teaching machine". It'll basically just be a podium on wheels with built-in speakers... But this gave me some ideas for "enhancements". Thanks Bob!
Congratulations Bob, a major accomplishment . I echo Jimmy’s thoughts that R2 needs to become a channel regular. Just roaming in the back of videos from time to time
I think, to save on power, you should add a function that the hidden lights only turn on when the '"doors" open. not a major improvement, but you will be able to play with R2 for a longer amount of time. But I love how he turned out and love your videos. Keep it up!!!
I’ve had a bad week but this video was great and made me laugh. I appreciate your honesty when you encounter an issue that you aren’t sure on how to execute. Great work!
So happy to see him driving around! This was what brought me to your channel ages ago, and I've seen almost all your videos since. Looking forward to the new project car restoration and more home improvement videos as I'd like to do that in the future.. just need similar amount of tools haha. Thank you for doing this project!
Congrats Bob!! That was an intense project and I'm so pumped to see it complete. No more droid cloud looming over your shoulder, that must be an amazing feeling :D
Possible additions, 1) Empire Strikes Back antenna from Hoth before the doors closed. 2) Return of the Jedi Lukes lightsaber. 3) Maybe R2 fire extinguisher 4) A 3PO for him to drag around lol
Thank you Bob, you always inspire me. The way you explain things has really helped me when I am training apprentices in my job (electrical/instrumentation). Thank you so much for doing a final video on this project! Keep up the good work, you are helping people in more ways than you think.
I love this project, that being said, it would be super cool to replace that power switch with some kind of magnetic switch, and have a magnet inside a restraining bolt, so you would remove the restraining bolt and that would turn him on.
Amazing job. I'm glad you finished him. I just joined astromech forums after seeing your last vid. I'm a right handed amputee so I'm working on building echo bad batch armor
