Homemade, DIY, Weekend Projects, Electronics, Robotics, Droid, Arduino, How To, Make, Build, Starwars, BB8, Droid
The droid can be controlled by any smartphone. It also talks as well. The makeshift design had cut the overall expenses to $120, making it cheaper than the Sphero toy.

ill be waiting for that

Watching someone younger than me doing this kind of thing makes me question my existence.
+Jeni San then stay away from the asian kids...
+Rasec Hills Sorry to go against your well thought comment, but I'm an Asian as well. I'm even a Filipino like this techy guy.
Jeni San well.. if it's any consolation, the original toy was made pretty similar, so maybe he just rebuild the original idea...
+Rasec Hills so your actually jealous because this sister is appreciating the boy
Ahsen Jabbar yeah, sort of... :/
Him: I don’t have the budget to buy a foam cutter
Also him: shows sphero bb8 and electric sander
Probably used the budget on those prior to the foam cutter
Every dad has an electric sander right?
I tried to replicate your robot, I dont know how I ended up with an r2d2 that doesn't follow commands. Just takes off until it crashes or battery runs out

DUDE! You're insanely talented! Not just as an engineer to figure all this out, but as a filmmaker too! I'm so excited to see what you produce in the future. Good luck!
+ftEmmett Thank you! Much appreciated man!
TechBuilder No problem! I'm psyched to see more!
+Maria Araracap As much I love to. That would be illegal and would go against Disney's copyright license.
+TechBuilder You could make them and sell them secretly,I'd pay you $500 to make me one Bro
+Michael Guzman - Taking into account the cost of the parts, programming, labour, etc, at $500, he'd probably end up makiing about $2/hr. Then there's the copyright.
Finally a tutorial that doesnt tell me to use my 3d printer, like if I have the money to buy one. Thanks for the detailed tutorial I will start to build a BB8.
welp im waiting......

More than a tech video, this is a showcase of a truly talented and passionate kid, and his wonderful supporting family. Well done everyone!
I have grown up in a body shop and for those of you who attempt this, when you peel off your masking, make sure you form a "cutting edge" with the tape. You do this by pulling a bit of the tape off then holding the loose edge of the tape pull it back on itself, as though you're making a "V" with the loose and adhered tape. That should allow you to have a much cleaner paint edge. As the way it pulls allows a neater removal process.
Just an FYI, I hope that helps.
+Corey Carnes I don't work in a body shop, but have done a little rattle-can painting in my time. Shouldn't he have used a spray-on primer in between the wood putty and two coats of white spray paint? Especially considering how much wear the body is going to take, literally rolling around on the ground.
Oh, and another thing, anyone who attempts this should be careful using a power sander on the wood putty. It makes it much quicker and easier to sand down to the next level (which is bad), and depending on your sander, you might leave some unwanted swirl marks.
+jpoolerdom the white spray paint may have been a primer, some primers are just white. Even if it's not primer it might be ok as long as he painted properly, I would recommend lots of light coats to build strong layers
jpoolerdom That's all very good advice, yes. I wonder if they make a clear coat designed to wear better than what a car would have.
+Corey Carnes Shouldn't you apply a clear varnish after the painting is done? Should make it more stable when rolling over the floor
Dylan Burford I recognized the can, Rustoleum white spray paint.
So what did you do over the break?
Kid: Oo I just built a fully functional BB-8 robot.
I have to say I am over joyed to see a younger person taking on a project like this and I am even more thrilled that your Dad and your family was helping you. That is an amazing thing to see. I hope to see a lot more projects from you. Keep doing what makes you happy!!!
Going into this video I was like "I'm going to do this!," then seeing how much work it was I changed my mind real quick.
Sigh. Maybe one day.

Michael Van Camp that's a little overboard
Fresh egg and two small sticks is all you need really. Or three small sticks and 4cc of mouse blood if you want the gory option.

So amazingly impressed with your work. It's one thing to design a working BB8 on a large scale budget but to pull it off on a shoestring budget and make a great instructional is just mind blowing. WELL done.
I love your design and creativity. Thank you for your part in making RUclips a great place to come

This man is a genius.
Dude, that's pretty awesome. You solved the main 3 key components of a spherical motion system with a magnetic 2 degrees of freedom attachment. All of it for less than 60 bucks, Kudos Sir!
After 6 years, pinapanuod ko ulit tong video mo.. What lacks in this version of yours is the weight distribution para hindi sya masyadong wobbly.. You should have added more weight on the lowest -center part (where the arduino is located) of the board inside the body.. Me and my workmate is planning to build one pag may oras na kami this year kaya napabisita ako ulit dito. This is the first (and only) video kasi na napanuod ko on how to make BB8..
I'm pretty sure this guy's name is actually MacGyver. When he said he didn't have a styrofoam cutter and couldn't afford one, I thought he was going to say he borrowed one. NOPE - made one out of stuff laying around the house!
+crocoboxer There's not much to a foam cutter, it's just a closed circuit heating a wire. You just need to get the right balance of wire resistance and wattage to get the heat right without frying the wire. All of this info is freely available online.
+jpoolerdom Clearly, you've never seen me build anything.
+crocoboxer lol
well, most filipinos MacGyver stuff. (and sometimes fail.)

Impressive, must be a manly smelling BB-8 too

Kid, you are going places in your life. It's so refreshing to see a young man like yourself with such a bright, creative mind taking on these awesome projects as opposed to being locked in front of their TV playing Xbox all day. I'm very impressed. Your dad must be very proud to have a son like you using your mind and fabricating skills. Very good stuff. Bright minds like yourself are our future and I'm blown away.
Best wishes.

By far one of the best builds I've seen so far! Amazing job!
+zacharymitchellchannel Thank you!
Great video, used it as a reference when I started building mine. I put together the main body and got all the electronics working. Didn't make the head or do the BB-8 paint yet. I might just leave it as a big Sphero-like ball instead. I would recommend if you want any sort of distance from the thing, using a RC controller instead of bluetooth to be able to get some better distance (and yes that is a little bit more expense but worth it if you are planning on using this outside), that is what I did and can operate my ball just short of a 1/4 mile away. Also speaking of RC parts, get some beefy motors to make it really pick up speed. The ones he has are pretty nice but at first I tried to use some out of a cheaper RC car I had and it was not that great, and if you do go for speed make sure to also add a pretty hefty weight ballast to the bottom of your platform to keep it in position.
I also made my ball a bit tougher, I did the fiberglass and bondo method to make it tougher. It also made it heavier, which might be why the original RC motors I had seemed under-powered. You can find a bunch of videos about using fiberglass and bondo to make the body. It won't be as tough as the sphero bb-8 I have, since apparently the sphero ball can take a shotgun blast and be fine, but it will take a crash into a wall or tree with basically no damage and you can always bondo, sand and repaint any areas you might need to.
And one other major upgrade I did was how to charge the batteries. I installed my batteries on the underside of the platform to help keep the weight on the bottom, used zip-ties and hot glue to make sure they stay in place. I then cut out a trap door in the body to reach a cable I have attached to the battery packs. I have the cable attached to the platform using velcro and I just have to pull the cable out, attach it to the adaptor I have and plug it in the wall. I might make another ball to improve on this design because right now I only have a tiny plastic hinge in place and it is already feeling like it is about to break from opening and closing, but I had to keep it small and as flush against the body as possible, but I am thinking I can maybe get a better hinge and sand down a section inside the body to countersink it into the body to make it flush.
All in all, not the most in-depth build I have ever done, (once again, not completed since I only have the body done) but still a fun time and can be done over a couple weekends (or just one weekend if you only do the body like I did and already have all the parts handy).
That’s so cool. The sounds it makes and everything bout it, watching from Malaysia

I went here after watching it from Tiktok. Damn I'm in awe. That's a gift. You are so talented and resourceful!
Gotta give you props, you got mad skills.
Brilliant well done. You have a future in special effects. I bet the cost of your build was a fraction of the one made for the film. It’s certainly on my build list for my grandson!

To improv the quality of your presentation, here's my advice : Never cross your arm, even your hands, or fingers. it feels like you're not "open" to the audiance.
Btw, the rest is getting better every time ! Good job man !
Honestly amazing how creative and smart this/he is. How is it so simple when working with the wires and cables such and knowing which wire to connect and to where, anyone that could help or link me somewhere would be much appreciated!

when will we see BB8 V2 build? Great work!
Could you do a demo video? Maybe a short 2 minute video of BB-8 rolling around? If love to see how it looks while it's running!
+illuminati No, he can't because it doesn't actually work. You can see that someone is moving the head around in the beginning, if you look closely you will see a hand.
+Davey Fraser someone's jealous lol
+Davey Fraser It is working as far as I know (it was seen on bts). I think the head was moved by a hand in the beginning since you have to move the whole body just to move the head. He didn't program the head to move really, he only placed magnets on top so that the head wouldn't roll with the whole body but to maintain being at the top. Still is an amazing build.
+Davey Fraser That wasn't a hand. LOL! It was a peice of canvas hanging at the back of the head. The inertia and momentum of the rotational movement made it swing.
Great job! I love your buildings. Greetings from Brazil 😊
This is amazing!!!! Best thing i have watched in a long time!
