I'm just getting started on the electronics research for my R2 so this is a nice little start to what I need to know.
Eventually, I would like to have some extra items such as opening pie pieces and doors on his body.

Panels and such are reasonably easily achieved with the addition of a Pololu Maestro. I may do a video for that when I get a bit more time. Mr Baddeley has done a series on Maestro, worth a look at his channel.

Out of curiosity. I plan on running my system on 18v battery. Can I connect a 18v to 5v converter from the battery leads to “Y” out to power my teeces lighting? Besides the dome moving, I don’t plan on anything else up there except the lighting. Thanks in advance.
I’m just not sure how to power my teeces lights without having to add anything other than a voltage converter if I even need that. Help me Obi Wan Kanobi. You’re my only hope.
Yeah absolutely, you’ll just need a slip ring to get power into the dome. I would run main voltage up through the slip ring, then drop down to 5v once inside the dome, which puts less current through the wires.

Love your videos. quick question. i have bought x2 12v motors for the drives, and i am planning on using an 18v ryobi battery, will a 12v buck converter have enough ooomph to power everything
I wouldn’t bother, just dial down the max drive speed in the sketch so you don’t overpower the motors.

Magnificent tutorial and very informative! Instead of using an X-Box controller can I use an RC controller instead such as a TX165 radio? Do I need an arduino or can it be built without one? My R2 will be powered with a 24V system. Lastly my R2 will just roll with the foot motors, have the dome spin and hopefully get an amplifier with a speaker for his sounds. Do you have this type of tutorial available? Again, thank you vey much for the detailed information!
Hi Ed, yeah traditional RC shouldn’t pose many issues other than controlling sounds. I have previously made a board that allows you to control sounds (to a degree) using rc. Have a search on my channel for pwm sounds.

@@EdG407FL at the moment I’m not aware of an easy solution to controlling sounds without using something like an arduino. There may be solutions out there with rc relays and such and indeed this is the way a lot of folks used to control sounds (with an 8 way relay remote for example) but these days using an arduino is just so much easier.

So, just to clarify..... you said that there are no changes if you plan on using power above 12v??, I'm planning on using a pair of ryobi 18v batteries in parallel.... can the syren10, sabertooth, amplifier, and the arduino handle that voltage??? Or do i need to step it all down to 12v to keep from frying all of them??? Thank you for all your videos, I'm at the electronics portion of my build, and you really help to make them manageable manageable... maybe a future video on integrating the teecees system !!! Thanks again!
So long as you use the 5v out from the sabertooth and syren to power the arduino and mp3 trigger (respectively) and your amplifier is rated to 18v, then no, you shouldn’t need any changes. The amplifier boards I use handle up to 24v infact they perform better above 12v.

Hi Steve...hopefully this is an easy question. I have an Arduino Uno and USB Host shield connected. I have ensured that the Host Shield is soldered appropriately to ensure the USB port provides power to the XBOX receiver. I am noticing, however, that the XBOX receiver is not powering up when plugged into the USB Host Shield, however, it does power up when plugged into my PC. So.....I tested the the USB host shield by plugging a USB cord into in and connecting it to a simply LED light....which worked. I am wondering if the USB Host Shield is not providing a full 5 volts to power the XBOX receiver? Is there something I can do to resolve this?
On some receivers, the light only comes on when the device is communicating (why it lights when plugged into your pc) so that’s more than likely an issue with the host shield (have you seen my video about faulty usb host shields and changing the chip?) or the hardware ID

Hi Steve....I love this tutorial. Thank you! Can you tell me how long of a charge you get on an R2 unit with this type of setup? If I used a 24 volt battery....how long would I be able to control my R2 unit until the battery runs out?
First answer is "it depends". On thing such as the weight of your droid, the surface you'll be driving on, how much driving you expect to do (versus static making sounds and moving the dome around), however, the most important thing which you've ommitted is the mAh capacity of your battery. Volts is how fast he'll go, mAh is how long he can go at that speed. :)

How are you dealing with the regenerative power from the Sabertooth if R2 is moved around with the batteries disconnected please?
I have an XT60 plug on each pair of leg wires which I detach before pushing.
Hello! What gauge wire are you using for the 5v connection from SyRen to Sparkfun, and Sabertooth to Uno?
And is it the same as what you’re using for the signal wire?
I’ve purchased an “Elegoo Dupont Breadboard Jumper Wires Ribbon Cables Kit” , and want to know if that’ll work, or if I need something different.

The problem with doing a video about uploading, is that it can differ from PC to PC, so what works fine on mine, may not work on yours perhaps due to a missing library, or a path for a file or any number of reasons. Best thing is post your issues on one of the FB groups, such as Baddeleys Printed Droids, with as much detail or screen grabs as possible, and the community will find a way.
Great video. The R2 sounds onto the MP3 Trigger on the github link do not work. Are you able to please share the audio files with me.

If you watch some of the other videos in my Padawan series, every component is discussed, difficult to put links due to the worldwide availability of parts.

Not really as it can differ from country to country. If you aren't sure of the components involved, they are all noted in the sketch. The sketch is available from github on Dan Kraus' page.
What gauge of wires are you using for this setup?
