Improving the MKIII Center Vent Assembly

  • Much of the Baddeley MKIII design is modular - parts can be assembled and finished on their own, then attached to the body in a way that allows them to be easily removed for repair, replacement or upgrades. Unfortunately, the center vent assembly is not one of them. Here I showcase a modified means of attaching the center vent so that it can be easily removed.
    Additionally, I decided to upgrade my speakers, which required me to design a custom adapter that would work with the existing mounting holes, but still allow me to remove the assembly for future work.
    Downloadable versions of these and other Baddeley Droid parts can be found at my Printables.com page: www.printables...
    All of the hardware used to install these modifications are M4 size and vary in length from 10-25mm.

    Excellent idea and thanks for sharing your mod files on printables. I have been wearing off my fingerprints wet sanding going for that perfect finish with no layer lines visible and then I chuckle thinking how I am just going to turn around and weather him to look like the New Hope version. 😄

      I know the feeling. I'm trying out a new process on my Bifrost Sword and so far it's very promising. I'll try to post details once it's done.

    Not handy for me (I have a V2) but I'm envious of your Mark III and approach for modular serviceability! Nice work! Thanks for the post!

      Actually, I ended up getting the same style speakers and have been looking for an adapter like what you created. Thank you for creating them! I will see if I can adapt them to the V2.

    Hardly seems much point upgrading the speakers when the sound coming out of them is blocked by two layers of PLA anyway. That part of the module really needs to be redesigned if people are going to mount speakers there.

    Where can I find the files that prints the actual slide in device that holds the vent ports and these pieces attach to? I have a SENNA Wood Frame and aluminum skin and I can't figure out how to attach the vent ports to something? This device looks perfect if it will fit in to the SENNA Wood Frame with adjustments.

      Hmm, I don't know how well this will work for a Senna frame. If you are referring to the blue surround to the center vents, in the Baddeley files that is "centreVentPanel.stl" and can be found in the Astromech -> Print Files -> Astromech MK3 -> MKIII Body -> Main Body & Skirt -> Greebles -> VentAssembly folder (the link to the OneDrive can be found here: www.patreon.com/mrbaddeley/about ). If you're instead referring to the thin walls that are on either side of the center vent frame, those are part of the Baddeley body. You can browse the files using the same base link above.
      Unlike a traditional "frame and skin" build like yours, the Baddeley design melds an internal frame and skins into one piece - with supports and surrounds incorporated into the model directly. The Baddeley greeblies are designed to use a lot of these internal support structures to hold them in place, whereas a traditional build would mount the greeblies to the skins or frame from the inside. Also, the Baddeley skin is much thicker since it's printed than an aluminum skin.

    I printed the speaker brackets but my m4 square nuts do not fit at all.

    • @jasonsR2D2
      @jasonsR2D2  2 месяца назад

      Did you use "thin" M4 nuts? Michael Baddeley's R2 files almost always require using nuts that are thinner than what is usually found at local hardware stores. Amazon has options for M4 square nuts that are only 2mm thick like these: www.amazon.com/200pcs-Square-Metric-Coarse-Thread/dp/B08CMG8F1K/ Hopefully that solves the problem for you.

    • @cyberfez
      @cyberfez 2 месяца назад

      @@jasonsR2D2 yeah it is not the thickness of the nut it is the length / height of them that is my issue.

    • @jasonsR2D2
      @jasonsR2D2  2 месяца назад

      So, looking at the models, the only places where the nuts really need to fit into the slots are the two side slots in AdapterBase.stl. For all the other locations, you could use slightly longer bolts and standard nuts and it will still hold everything together. I will try and find a time to revisit this and maybe tweak the tolerances, but I'm not sure when I will get around to it. As a last resort, maybe take a dremel to the nuts you have to get them to fit better? If they're the brass nuts, they are pretty soft and that should be a quick fix.

    I mean I get this is nice and all, but what a waste of time and money, why not build something actually useful like a freaking bomb shelter or a airplane or something not a fake fandom robot and its not even a good movie for crying out loud its dumb. Watch a real sci fi for adults like The Expanse.

      Well it's like any other piece of art. It's not supposed to be a practical investment, it's not supposed to have any other purpose than you like it and you wanted to make it. Plus let's be honest quality of movies is an entirely subjective thing, just because you don't like them doesn't make them bad. There's no need to gatekeep sci-fi to any particular set of films, and I've literally never heard of the expanse so it can't be that good
