I recall back in the day, when the SkyTower was still under construction, I didn't have enough money for a taxi back from a Saturday morning tennis match from some wops around St Johns. I lived in an apartment in CBD. SkyTower was only half-built ('95-96 or so), had a tower crane on top of it at the time. I just took aim for the SkyTower and started walking ))) Few hours later I ended up in Remuera, where I knew the bus routes and got back home with the meager coins I had left))) Thanks SkyTower, you showed me the way :-)

But seriously, you're right on the money - I've lived in Auckland for 30 years, seen this and that and then I meet some random tourist and they start telling me about things that I never even heard about in my area. 🤯 When you live in a place, it's like 'ah, stuff it, I can check it out whenever...' and you never bother to cos it's just there. As the old adage goes: "Don't confuse tourism with emigration" 🙂

As a Kiwi i can confirm that not much man made stuff happens down the coast around Hawai bc theres only houses there.
And when i go up to my cousins house and we go horse riding down at the
HUGE feild by my house and sometimes we go ride at the beach and we might go for a ride on my 4 wheeler and on my cuzzies dirt bike.

I've been to the sky tower 2 times. And it took 2 years to build the sky tower. I might move to Auckland I'm excited to but I like where I live right now I can't tell you where I live but I'm far far away from Auckland 😢. so I actually moved to West Auckland after living in America for my first 27 years - gotta say, the way you can see the Sky Tower from almost anywhere you are in the westies is really incredible. and when you crest a hill you can see for literal miles (even if it's just houses). controversial but I think just the way some parts of the city are built is really something to be proud of!

I tried teaching a class of kids about the big L and P bottle, which we consider a genuine attraction! Sure there’s a bit of self deprecation in there, but it was an event to pass and take a photo. My extremely friendly, relaxed, cool co-teacher actually got angry with me I think, suspecting shenanigans, and was saying ‘yeh , we’ve got lemon pop here too.’ Very difficult to explain how small world NZ is for some things…and also how guuud L and P is…

Born and raised in Auckland; can confirm, the skytower sucks. The most interesting thing about it is T's stabilization system that is essentially a giant pendulum to keep the building from snapping like a twig
