Coca-Cola still contains coca leaf extract as a part of their "secret formula". While the courts have ruled that companies can keep their secret formulas secret, but not with the court. Correction on the Kellogg’s, the younger brother actually invented the corn flakes, the older brother took his idea, but didn’t put sugar in it because they were 7th day Adventist, but the younger brother told him it would make more money if sugar was put in it, he didn’t listen to him, so the younger brother took back his invention and put sugar in it, which made him very rich. After that, the two brothers sued each other for years, for the rights of the brand name Kellogg’s , eventually the younger brother won.
That's only a half of Kellogg's history they where at one point designed to be as bland as possible because Kellogg's thought behind this was religion based that it would curb self gratification
If I remember correctly, the original graham cracker had no sugar at all fell somewhere between unsalted saltines & military hardtack. I believe instant coffee, American cheese singles, velveeta, dry creamer, instant cocoa, granola bars, can openers, canned food, bagged chips, hard candies, bagged teas, sliced bread, TV dinners, & many other every-day things were invented specifically for military rations before everyday citizens started using them.

The big takeaway here is how at least 3 different beverages today were originally sold as snake oil and were so successful we're still drinking them almost 100 years later.
"A resident of 'Wacko' Texas" LMAOO
Lol i heard that and was like its wayco not wacko
Beat me to it lmao!!!! Guess I’ma start calling Waco, wacko💀😂
Haha was about to say this
How can't you be aware of that city?
Ha Ha I caught that too and was like, what?
"Wacko, Texas." Lol, as a Texan, I have to admit, I did have a bit of a chuckle over that. I don't know what it is, if it's the heat, or the giant cockroaches, but people here do tend to act a bit coo coo bananas now and then, myself included. Mainly after having to deal with Houston drivers.
As another Texan, I can say that dealing with Houston drivers can drive anyone whacko.
When you pronounce it "Wacko" Texas, you are more on point than you know.
In the 1960s sodas and ice cream were sold in pharmacy's, why is that.
gasoline was originally sold in pharmacies before they had any gas stations built also
pharmacies often had a soda counter to bring in more money.
But pharmacy's are there to help people get with sickness, and if they sell sweets like sodas and ice cream wouldn't that make the people sick.
@@manuelclan776 You can STILL buy all manner of "junk food" at "drugstores".
Because "fast food" chains weren't as numerous as they are now. In many small towns a "drug store" was also a general store and a hang-out, particularly for those to young to hang out at a bar. You can STILL buy Coke or Pepsi at most "drug stores" even today, And even CIGARETTES at some.
Great list! And thanks for super-young Keanu Reeves cornflake commercial, that was awesome! Also, Dr. Pepper used to have "10, 2, and 4" on the label/as part of the advertising, as the times to drink it for an energy boost each day.
10-2-4 still appears on the label of Dr Pepper made with sugar rather than HFCS.
"I need cornflakes. Lots of cornflakes. Whoah..."
Surf Wisely.
When I was little I remember the Dr bringing a bottle of cola syrup as medicine. I don't remember what I was sick of, I was a sickly kid who missed a lot of school.
Cola syrup is for nausea.
A pharmacy that I worked at in the late 60s still got an occasional prescription for cola to cure stomach aches.
Me? I drink diet soda if I am constipated, something about artificial sweeteners and my insides become ....well, you get the idea.
We buy Cola from a pharmacy here in Missouri which is an anti nausea medicine which advises crushed ice which you then pour the cola over it and drink it. We love it. It really works.
Cola syrup. Bleck
Prescription Cough medicine today often has codeine. It's a cough suppressant.
My mom used to give that to me when I was sick too. I loved it! It was super sweet and kinda good.
My dad made the best Salisbury steak ever! He would put in little tiny tips of onion and green pepper and small cubes of raw bacon and then broil them in the oven serve them with the mushroom gravy and they were the best!
Love how they left out the part about how Graham believed that his "pure" diet which included these "crackers" would help to prevent people from having impure thoughts, in turn preventing masturbation as Graham thought these things were a catalyst for going blind and early death. Kellogs corn flakes have a similar use history as well. ;)
Yep. Megalomaniacal psychopathy abounds.
Pretty sure it was Kellog who held those beliefs. Not sure about Graham.
Graham & one of the two Kellogg brothers would both roll in their graves if they knew how much sugar is in them today.
I believe he did say something akin to 'to prevent moral impurity' as a euphemism for wanking.
The puffed corn was actually first considered as an animal feed until people realized that they made for good eating with the right seasonings.
5:16 that's.... that's Henry David Thoreau. 👀
I've never classified goo-goo cluster as a "cookie" lol
Very nice video!! You forgot the M&M's btw. M&M's were inspired by rations given to soldiers during the Spanish Civil War. So their hands wouldn't be dirty. That's why the hard coloured cover.
Did they forget them or were they just not included? I'm sure there are other items that were not included in this list.

in Mexico, 7up still contained Lithium citrate up until the early 2000s. Which is why to this day Mexican parents/grandparents will give you 7up whenever youre sick. I'm not 100% certain on whether or not it still has it, but in 2013 when i lived in Mexico and got really bad food poisoning- and I hadnt drank soda for over a year until that day, drank a half litre of 7up and felt much better the morning after.

Rhyme learned as a child:
"Coca Cola came to town
Pepsi Cola knocked him down
Dr.Pepper fixed him up
And they all got drunk on 7up."
Pepsi and Coke may be mixed up, because I was told the rhyme meant Coke was invented first, then Pepsi came along and sold better, but Dr. Pepper outsold Pepsi, then 7up outsold them all. Obviously, things have changed since these drinks first came to market, and my sis could have just lied to me lol

Was that Keanu Reeves in that corn flake commercial?!
He was also in that Bicycle race Coca-Cola commercial!
No but that was Will pharrell though
The goo goo cluster looks good!!!

They're good
If I remember correctly, the original graham cracker had no sugar at all fell somewhere between unsalted saltines & military hardtack.
I believe instant coffee, American cheese singles, velveeta, dry creamer, instant cocoa, granola bars, can openers, canned food, bagged chips, hard candies, bagged teas, sliced bread, TV dinners, & many other every-day things were invented specifically for military rations before everyday citizens started using them.
tang,
One of the photos you suggest is of Graham is actually of Henry David Thoreau.

The corn flakes story is a bit more involved. The brothers fueded, and one was still serving the original at the health spa in Battle Creek, Michigan. The other brother started packaging and selling them under the family name. This started a breakfast cereal “gold rush”, where lots of companies came in to get a bit of that market. The movie, “The Road to Wellville” takes place at this time.
