The kid in the thumbnail eating spaghetti in the Franco American ad is my dad!! For real. I have a copy of the original ad and many others. My dad and brothers and sisters were all models as kids we have piles of old Life magazines and a bunch of others with adds that they were all in. He was also painted by Norman Rockwell. He grew up in the West side of Manhatten and then Astoria, Queens and would frequently see himself and/or members of his family in ads on billboards in the subway and whatnot.

Coca-Cola still contains coca leaf extract as a part of their "secret formula". While the courts have ruled that companies can keep their secret formulas secret, but not with the court. Coke had to reveal to them what was in it so they could comply with the Pure Food & Drug act that was repealed in 1970 and re-enacted as the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). To this day Coke must file DEA forms and follow strict guidelines to make sure that only the flavinoids of the leaf are in the final product and not anything that could be extracted to produce cocaine. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to the DEA have revealed Coke's formulaic secret.

Correction on the Kellogg’s, the younger brother actually invented the corn flakes, the older brother took his idea, but didn’t put sugar in it because they were 7th day Adventist, but the younger brother told him it would make more money if sugar was put in it, he didn’t listen to him, so the younger brother took back his invention and put sugar in it, which made him very rich. After that, the two brothers sued each other for years, for the rights of the brand name Kellogg’s , eventually the younger brother won.

That's only a half of Kellogg's history they where at one point designed to be as bland as possible because Kellogg's thought behind this was religion based that it would curb self gratification

If I remember correctly, the original graham cracker had no sugar at all fell somewhere between unsalted saltines & military hardtack.
I believe instant coffee, American cheese singles, velveeta, dry creamer, instant cocoa, granola bars, can openers, canned food, bagged chips, hard candies, bagged teas, sliced bread, TV dinners, & many other every-day things were invented specifically for military rations before everyday citizens started using them.

Please stop laughing at Americans who pronounce "Edinburgh" with a hard "G" at the end if you are going to continue saying "wack-o" for the city in Texas.

The corn flakes story is a bit more involved. The brothers fueded, and one was still serving the original at the health spa in Battle Creek, Michigan. The other brother started packaging and selling them under the family name. This started a breakfast cereal “gold rush”, where lots of companies came in to get a bit of that market. The movie, “The Road to Wellville” takes place at this time.
