Essential reading for Batman newbies: - Year One- The Long Halloween- Dark Victory- The Killing Joke- A Death in the Family- A Lonely Plae of Dying- A Serious House on Serious Earth- Hush- Under the Red Hood- The Dark Knight Returns read it in that order and you'll be fine.
Okay, so, I have like, a trilogy. -Year One or Long Halloween (There swapable, I prefer TLH) -Killing Joke -TDKR If you’d like to learn more about Robin, I recommend Robin Year One. Don’t read Under The Red hood if you’re doing this line from me, read it afterwards. And in between Killing Joke and TDKR you can read the last crusade. It’s like a small companion book made to hype up TDK3.
Ohthefeels Writer: Snyder we can't have Batman kill I mean it doesn't make sense why he would want to kill Superman Snyder: Please comic nerds don't care about that they only want to see them have an epic battle Writer: Alright but if this fails you owe me gum Couple months later Writer: *chews on gum like a cow* Snyder: Oh shut up
are yall talking about Zack Snyder and BvS? Because i had little problem with him killing in that movie. Was it not obvious? He was broken and could no longer keep the darkness at bay. However, by the end of the film Superman's sacrifice gave him faith that there was still good in the world and thus restored hope to Batman(meaning he won't be a killer in the future movies).
Ohthefeels how? It was a good movie with meaningful and deep dialouges. Just because of the "Martha" scene, you say the film is bad?. I,Personally loved the movie.
your "What to Read" videos have helped me so much getting into comics! With everything out there, it's intimidating to not know where to start. Thanks for your suggestions!
The entire Grant Morrison run of Batman, from Batman&Son to Batman Inc, has got to be my favorite Batman story, which just might be my favorite comic book run.
So your videos have helped me recently get into comics pretty hardcore. I've read about 12 trades/graphic novels, all of the DC Rebirth issues so far and a few random issues. Before I had only read Year One of the ones you recommended, but now all I have left is The Dark Knight Returns, which I already own and have seen the animated movie. Thanks a bunch man
i just finished reading my first comicbook of my life, and i started with batman the dark knight returns. I was only used to manga artstyle so i needed some time to get the feeling of it, but it's so cool. and for a first comicbook, it had it all. batman, the joker, superman. thanks for this video. i'll continue reading in your recommended order!
Thank you very much! I saw your comment under my notifications, but it doesn’t show up. To answer your question, I think people say to read Haunted Knight before Long Halloween because it was in Legends of the Dark Knight first, or just to show the villains that are in it first. I really didn’t see why it mattered, they’re unrelated Halloween stories. I guess before LH or after DV would be just as ok.
My absolute faves are The Long Halloween, Year One, and The Dark Knight Returns. Obvious, sure, but these three are some of my favorite stories ever. Today I include Snyder and Capullo's run as must-read, along with yes, the Killing Joke. (I don't know why I add Alan Moore's book tentatively...)
Should I get the book of stories like Year One, The Long Halloween, Hush, The Killing Joke, Under The Red Hood, The Dark Knight Returns even though I can just watch their movie adaptations?
is there a problem if i read them on kindle? Will the color get dizzy when turned into b&w? Will there be a problem to read on this small 6.8 inch screen do i have to zoom to read? Pls reply
No real surprises in your selection of course. Haven't read 'Court of Owls' yet though... I also really liked 'Year 100' by Paul Pope and Azzarello's 'Batman Noir' (especially for the art by Risso). I'm also curious about the Batman-stuff by Doug Moench and Kelley Jones. Their visual depiction of Batman seems awesome to me!... (nice background music btw: Danny Elfman's 'Batman theme' is the best!)
born2beblue Yeah thought Elfmans music added a nice touch. If you were a kid in the 90's the minute you heard that soundtrack on the tv no matter where you were at home you ran.
Love the theme music! You didn't like Hush?? I thought it was great. I would definitely tell anyone who wants to know batman to read this. It really digs into the character.
Awesome video. Just getting back into comics since the 90s. I'm loving the Rebirth but I want to binge all these classics. I also don't wanna collect singles so I love how trades and hardcovers exist now.
I recommend as well "The Man Who Laughs", it is another pretty solid one. As for my favorites I would have to say (In no particular order) 1. Black Mirror 2. Hush 3. Heart of Hush 4. Knightfall 5. The Long Halloween 6. Dark Knight Returns 7. The Killing Joke
Killing joke and batman year one definitely! Killing joke is included in some of the newer comic series and books. I.e, batman death of the family. Greeeat one, and part of it reflects back on the killing joke as well.
Thanks for the recommendations. I think the list you gave out is good, because it's not overwhelming me on what to read. But i do hope you do another video with more recommendations. I have also heard mix things about Hush. It sounds like it's a book that can go either way for readers.
Definitely Dark Knight Returns. I've read through it countless times and I'm still not tired of it. Some of, if not the best, Frank Miller's best writing.
Oh absolutely. It's a clear tonal and artistic shift as soon as he takes over the writing and all of it was gold. Can somebody say the death of Elektra? Classic story.
After hearing Morrison on Fatman on Batman I had to reread The Killing Joke immediately... just the notion blew my mind - got to say, yep, that's what Moore did - adds a lot more weight to the entire story (which really says something because it's such an awesome book to begin with). I'm pretty new to your channel - I am really enjoying it - great videos from what I've watched. Ever had any interest in The First Kingdom by Jack Katz? It's probably not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm in the middle of the first hardcover and it is pretty impressive for what it is - could be a good review candidate for you some day if you're ever looking for something a little different. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Thank you for the recommendations. I just started to get into comic books. I have to blame the walkomg dead for getting me started ☺. I still don't know anything avout comic books.
I'm a huge batman fan but I have not read the dark knight returns or year one.I have seen the animated movie's for both but should I still read the novels.
Dont you think it’s high time you make an update for this video? How do we read Batman after Rebirth? The Button is before of after! Keep up the good word. Greetings from Greece.
Great video and very informative. Im new to comics in general and Batman. So far I have read Hush, which I absolutely loved and Batman Earth one, which I thought was ok. Ive just bought Knightfall vol.1 because Bane is one of my fave villains. I will defo check out your other recommendations :)
Hey great video. I personally loved HUSH....but no hate. To each there own. My question is, starting with Batman One.....what would you advice for the next, say 5-10 comics, In order of continuity??
I read Hush before I really got into comics. I didn't really understand any of the DC universe's continuity, but I still thought it was pretty good. Then I REALLY started with Court of Owls and kept reading the entire Snyder run. Court of Owls is still my favorite story in the entire new 52, along with Throne of Atlantis. I haven't read any of the others, but I saw the animated movies for Year One and Dark Knight Returns. I'll probably read Killing Joke at some point.
Hello as a non native speaker of English i would like to say thank you for your effort and can you please make a list of these books in order Thanks :D
i am having a problem that...is the story of batman hush is better or the dark knight returns or the man who laughs? only one choice. vote please ASAP!
Hush is what got me into Batman!! I thought DKR was horrible to be honest, I never really liked Frank Miller because he always makes Batman brutal, and the thing that supposed to make batman comics brutal are the villans not Batman! I mean while Batman will interagote thugs, he wouldn't scare them by making them almost bleed to death!! But Frank Miller did that anyway.... The Man Who Laughs is okay, but really as somebody who read a lot of Batman, well a lot of comics in genaral, Hush is one of my favorite, its just a really good mystery!!
hush, the dark knight returns in my opinion is overrated, it mischaracterizes superman, and there are sections in the book which are news reports and they are cool for world building at first but they end up being use to much and feel like filler to make a longer book, i feel joker is the best part of the book, also the new robin bruce would never accept a robin that quickly, the man who laughs is incredible it really showcases the joker and his nihilistic ways in some parts and even inspired the dark knight also newer prints of the book come with another story, made of wood also by ed brubaker which has the golden age green lantern in it and is like a murder mystery case and its also really good
I started with Batman Hush and enjoyed it a lot more than expected actually... I went into it a bit skeptical because of what you said xD what where your issues with it? I'm curious.
So far the only Batman that I've read is Year One and The Court of Owls. I really enjoyed Year One, especially the artwork, but I didn't care for The Court of Owls whatsoever. I know a lot of people love Greg Capullo's artwork, but it's just not for me. I thought the story felt very predictable and I didn't find The Court of Owls to be particularly compelling as villains. But I'm not giving up on Batman, I have both The Dark Knight Returns and The Killing Joke waiting for me at the library. Hopefully I'll enjoy those more.
Hey art is subjective and you like what you like. :) I like to use the example of my distaste for Chris Ware. Everyone praises his work and loves it. Does nothing for me. Check those out though like I said The Killing Joke is VERY dark. It's where you find out how Barbra Gordon became a paraplegic and it's really messed up.
Batman is the best superhero period. And I think Zack is going to do more than justice to BvS. I have a gut feeling Afflecks batman wil be the defining movie batman. Also loved MOS, don't get the hate. It had its issues, but so did CA Winter Soilder, TDK, GOTG ect. But I don't see anyone complaining about them.
dkr is probably the most overrated comic book (second only to all star superman) but still a good read nonetheless, great selection for jumping on points but i wanted to add a couple of books that new batman readers would also enjoy the man who laughs: technically a sequel to year one but it works as an extension to the killing joke, it explores batman's first encounter with joker the long Halloween: jeph loeb's classic detailing batman's second year, heavily influenced by eye of the beholder, this book retells two face's origin earth one: a re imagining of Bruce Wayne's origin by geoff johns, not canon but still a really good read arkham asylum: Dave McKean, 'nuff said
Yup. I would say Hush is a more well known story than Long Halloween since Jim Lee does the art for it. Plus I did give the mention to it at the end of the video. Bound to have missed a few since there are so many batman stories.
Hardcover Reviews Yes, you mentioned it at the end, but Long Halloween is way more known that Hush. I really don't remember a Batman top stories ranking without it. Nevertheless, you've done a great video. Keep the good work.
As a newb this video should have been more focused instead of just naming 7-8 runs on Batman. Could have googled a list for that, never gave an opinion on how to actually start.
The dark knight returns should NEVER be a comic for first timers. It should always be one of the last. It’s an elseworlds take on the character and not a good representation of the main personality of the character. TDKR is amazing after you get to know batman.
My top 5 are The Long Halloween, The Man Who Laughs, Born to Kill (New 52 Batman and Robin), No Man's Land and Court of Owls. Hush is fun, got me into comics.
Essential reading for Batman newbies:
- Year One- The Long Halloween- Dark Victory- The Killing Joke- A Death in the Family- A Lonely Plae of Dying- A Serious House on Serious Earth- Hush- Under the Red Hood- The Dark Knight Returns
read it in that order and you'll be fine.
Should I skip The Man Who Laughs?
Okay, so, I have like, a trilogy.
-Year One or Long Halloween (There swapable, I prefer TLH)
-Killing Joke
-TDKR
If you’d like to learn more about Robin, I recommend Robin Year One. Don’t read Under The Red hood if you’re doing this line from me, read it afterwards.
And in between Killing Joke and TDKR you can read the last crusade. It’s like a small companion book made to hype up TDK3.
what about court of owls?
I was just going to comment that there is a reading order. Sorry for being 2 years late haha
Spoiler: Snyder screwed it up
Ohthefeels
Writer: Snyder we can't have Batman kill I mean it doesn't make sense why he would want to kill Superman
Snyder: Please comic nerds don't care about that they only want to see them have an epic battle
Writer: Alright but if this fails you owe me gum
Couple months later
Writer: *chews on gum like a cow*
Snyder: Oh shut up

I was kinda pissed of cuz i was thinking bout scott snyder lol
Wrong
Under the Red Hood is my favorite so far
your "What to Read" videos have helped me so much getting into comics! With everything out there, it's intimidating to not know where to start. Thanks for your suggestions!
The Killing Joke is a masterpiece, Moore created an amazing character study about Batman and The Joker.
The first Batman graphic I read was The Long Halloween. I loved it! Glad to hear it mentioned.
The entire Grant Morrison run of Batman, from Batman&Son to Batman Inc, has got to be my favorite Batman story, which just might be my favorite comic book run.
Morrisons Batman run is the definition of epic !!
Just read the killing Joke and like you say its stunning and a book you will always go back too the art work is off the chart!
Thanks a bunch man
If u read the Killing Joke, read the original version, not Bolland's recolored version. You can find it in DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore TPB.
I really liked how you included Hush even though you didn't enjoy it. I was really looking for an unbiased review to get me started and this was it.
i just finished reading my first comicbook of my life, and i started with batman the dark knight returns. I was only used to manga artstyle so i needed some time to get the feeling of it, but it's so cool. and for a first comicbook, it had it all. batman, the joker, superman. thanks for this video. i'll continue reading in your recommended order!
careful now dark knight returns mischaracterizes superman
I need to read Court of Owls. I jumped ahead and read Death of the Family, and it was amazing!
in these reviews why aren't the books reviewed with time line in mind? so frustarating
He said in the beginning that we dont have to worry about continuity, ya dingus
Have you checked out my ‘How to Start Video’? I put timelines in mine
Continuity is very important! You can’t read Post-Crisis and New 52 together
Room 237 Reviews I just checked it out now. Great review. It deserves more views.
Thank you very much! I saw your comment under my notifications, but it doesn’t show up. To answer your question, I think people say to read Haunted Knight before Long Halloween because it was in Legends of the Dark Knight first, or just to show the villains that are in it first. I recently picked up batman year one and dark night strikes again and I'm picking up man who laughs long Halloween
Good choices!
im new to the batman storyline .....THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!
Great video I think I will pick up The Dark Knight Returns,The Killing Joke, and Year One.
The killing joke and death of the family
I just want to add in a great Batman Joker tale. "Batman Noel" it's based on "A Christmas Carol" and it's really cool, especially during Holidays.
Batman R.I.P.
Good review you made me not stress on having to buy a thousand books
Reading year one now and read the killing joke before. It was awesome. I'm hooked! Great video.
My batman hush tradpaperback was right beside me when u said that
I like Bronze Age batman. Neal Adams and Denny O'Neil's stuff is great
Should I get the book of stories like Year One, The Long Halloween, Hush, The Killing Joke, Under The Red Hood, The Dark Knight Returns even though I can just watch their movie adaptations?
is there a problem if i read them on kindle? Will the color get dizzy when turned into b&w? Will there be a problem to read on this small 6.8 inch screen do i have to zoom to read? Pls reply
Can you do Spiderman, Deadpool and Captain America??? Please and thanks!
No real surprises in your selection of course. Haven't read 'Court of Owls' yet though... I also really liked 'Year 100' by Paul Pope and Azzarello's 'Batman Noir' (especially for the art by Risso). Love the theme music! You didn't like Hush?? I thought it was great. I would definitely tell anyone who wants to know batman to read this. It really digs into the character.
Did you read Planetary? There's a nice Batman story which includes many different versions from Dark Knight Batman to Adam West Barman bizarrely.
Great video mate I'm just starting to get into batman graphic novels and this is best video to get started cheers for the help
I've really only read Batman black and white vol. 1 and I loved it
Awesome video. Just getting back into comics since the 90s. I'm loving the Rebirth but I want to binge all these classics. I also don't wanna collect singles so I love how trades and hardcovers exist now.
you answered every batman related question i had :D thanks, keep up with your videos man ;)
I recommend as well "The Man Who Laughs", it is another pretty solid one. As for my favorites I would have to say (In no particular order)
1. Black Mirror
2. Hush
3. Heart of Hush
4. Knightfall
5. The Long Halloween
6. Dark Knight Returns
7. The Killing Joke
Black Mirror is so great! That ending with the kid.
Killing joke and batman year one definitely! Killing joke is included in some of the newer comic series and books. I.e, batman death of the family. Greeeat one, and part of it reflects back on the killing joke as well.

definitely picking up the dark knight returns ,long halloween, killing joke and batman : hush
Can someone please give me a order for Scott Snyder pre new 52 batman run I have black mirror is that the first one or the start
Definitely Dark Knight Returns. I've read through it countless times and I'm still not tired of it. Some of, if not the best, Frank Miller's best writing.
that has to go to his daredevil run imo
His Daredevil run is fantastic, especially The Man Without Fear.
+Nick Veldey yes he really gave the character the dark reputation he has now
Oh absolutely. It's a clear tonal and artistic shift as soon as he takes over the writing and all of it was gold. Can somebody say the death of Elektra? Classic story.

Never herd of First Kingdom. Going to check that out.
Thank you for the recommendations. I just started to get into comic books. I have to blame the walkomg dead for getting me started ☺. I still don't know anything avout comic books.
Does it matter if you don’t read batman graphic novels in order?
Ive read all of these exept hush (im about to pick it up) but they’re all excelent stories
I picked up Batman Year one, Killing Joke, Long Halloween and Dark knight returns.I never read any Batman book before.
I know that Nightwing and Red Hood aren't Batman (they're sort of related though), but do you have a recommendation for starting either of them.
he messed it up
Do a review on the Arkham knight: Genesis & Arkham knight vol 1-3
Great recommendations. Subbed.
I loved Hush though.
I'm a huge batman fan but I have not read the dark knight returns or year one.I have seen the animated movie's for both but should I still read the novels.
to be honest those books are waaaaay over rated
The only one I didn't read is Hush! nice video man, all those comics are a must for any batman fans
thanks i really hope this helps me out, ive been looking for a story pre new 52 next book im getting is dark knight returns
hey mate awesome channel, i have a request for you i don't know if it's posible, can you talk about the batman elseworlds please?
gotham by gaslight and earth one thats all you should read
hey cool video! But how about reading it chronologically? How should I move?
the man who laughs tells the first meeting with the joker and year one is bruces origin personally i think those are the 2 books to start with
I am thinking of picking up red son,the killing joke and any other modern type of comic(not new 52)any suggestions? How about nightfall?
what ever happened to the man of tomorrow if you like killing joke, this is a story alan moore did for superman so you may also enjoy that
This video is really helpful, thank you!:) Using your vids to guide me on what to read. Read watchmen because of you and it was great. I loved it.
Awesome to hear. Knightfall is a lot of fun. Really made Bane a scary antagonist.
You are 100% right about Hush, it is great basically because of Jim Lee's art. The story was so obvious. -_-"
Hey great video. I personally loved HUSH....but no hate. To each there own. My question is, starting with Batman One.....what would you advice for the next, say 5-10 comics, In order of continuity??
the man who laughs ik its just one but the guy above me covered what i would have said minus this
Does a death in the family require some continuity or can I just pick it up and read it?
Do read Second Chances before Death in the Family which shows the origin of second Robin Jason Todd :)
Read the first few volumes of that series first.
you could read it and it would be coherant just way leas good
hey, can you help me. I'm was wondering if there was an omnibus or absolute edition that covers the whole series that includes death in the family ?
I read Hush before I really got into comics. I didn't really understand any of the DC universe's continuity, but I still thought it was pretty good. Then I REALLY started with Court of Owls and kept reading the entire Snyder run. Court of Owls is still my favorite story in the entire new 52, along with Throne of Atlantis. I haven't read any of the others, but I saw the animated movies for Year One and Dark Knight Returns. I'll probably read Killing Joke at some point.
Cant believe you didnt include long halloween
Hello as a non native speaker of English i would like to say thank you for your effort and can you please make a list of these books in order
Thanks :D
would reading graphic novels help assist me to improve my conversation ability to connect aswell as stimulate? please advise dillon
Val Dillon yes it will help you a lot
My personal favorite Batman stories are RIP and the Long Halloween but Dark Knight Returns is pretty solid. Are you reading Spider-Gwen by any chance?
Yes and I'm really enjoying it so far. Love seeing what some of the Marvel characters are like in this universe.
Ethan Llewellyn He said it was Dark Knight Returns
Ethan Llewellyn Batman RIP. What's your favorite?
Ethan Llewellyn Hmm, that's tough. It's either All Star Superman or the first Ultimate Collection for Brian Michael Bendis's Daredevil.
Ethan Llewellyn ooh nice
i am having a problem that...is the story of batman hush is better or the dark knight returns or the man who laughs? only one choice. vote please ASAP!
Don't bother with Hush. It's not in the same league as Dark Knight Returns!
I just wanted an answer based on storyline RedSon :/
Hush is what got me into Batman!! I thought DKR was horrible to be honest, I never really liked Frank Miller because he always makes Batman brutal, and the thing that supposed to make batman comics brutal are the villans not Batman! +Yanke East that was a ton but i love comics lol
I started with Batman Hush and enjoyed it a lot more than expected actually... I went into it a bit skeptical because of what you said xD
what where your issues with it? I'm curious.
I agree I enjoyed the story the art is great and the story is great the way you don't know who hush is till near the end.
234conor yeah, I had my guesses though. But a lot of people in the comic community here don't seem to like Batman:hush very much for some reason.
You should've include The Long Halloween though!
I love killing joke, and hush there my favourites. However I really really need to read more scott snyder
The dark knight returns, year one, the killing Joke, the new 52 series. Hush (not the greatest, but has many character.)
You missed out death of the family great comic
How?! Hush was great, and Jeph Loeb wrote Long Halloween and Dark Victory which were also great
+Novgskua Osbraxus Ture, but it's excellent for new readers. The sequels to Hush were great though, with Paul Dini as writer.
Is dc comics better than marvel?
Depends on who you ask. I personally prefer the latter
Comics? Yes movies? Some
So far the only Batman that I've read is Year One and The Court of Owls. I really enjoyed Year One, especially the artwork, but I didn't care for The Court of Owls whatsoever. Check those out though like I said The Killing Joke is VERY dark. It's where you find out how Barbra Gordon became a paraplegic and it's really messed up.
I like to go back to KJ after reading some of the darker Joker stories. I like to think the Joker dies at the end.
So you subscribe to the Morrison theory?
Hardcover Reviews
Yeah. It makes sense. Even the title suggests B-man killed the Joker. It's genius!
I been reading Batman for 4 years I started with The Dark Knight Returns and Scott Snyder Batman run
Long halloween and dark victory
spoiler alert batman v superman was horrendous
under the red hood & the long halloween, are great
Pick up Batman Year One. Fantastic!
i'v already got Year One, i love it
Do you read Marvel books?
+RedSon I read all kinds of comic books, marvel, dc, dark horse, vertigo
You have a wide range in taste. I also like to read different comic characters.
I really dug the Long Halloween, unfortunately Dark Victory felt more of the same :/
Never read Dark Victory. I did enjoy Long Halloween though.
You're the first person I know who didn't like Batman Hush, I'm not the only one anymore lol
3 JOKERS ???
New 52 Death in the Family Series!!!!!!!!!!!
i think HUSH is ok but not grate. I hade a good time reading it. I can really understand why you are not liking it.
definitely dont agree with you about hush. I do respect your opinion
I enjoyed the Killing Joke but i thought it was a little bit overrated ! I prefer the Joker by Azzarello !
Utube Viewer Such a great story. I actually consider it as a spiritual successor to Nolans Dark Knight.
Hardcover Reviews Agreed. btw great job on ur channel man ! u actually made me start reading comics again after I stopped 20 years ago. Thanks :)
Utube Viewer Awesome to hear man! Thank you.
And you didn't mention Batman - Bruce Wayne : Fugitive
0:54 Ohhh boy....
dkr is probably the most overrated comic book (second only to all star superman) but still a good read nonetheless, great selection for jumping on points but i wanted to add a couple of books that new batman readers would also enjoy
the man who laughs: technically a sequel to year one but it works as an extension to the killing joke, it explores batman's first encounter with joker
the long Halloween: jeph loeb's classic detailing batman's second year, heavily influenced by eye of the beholder, this book retells two face's origin
earth one: a re imagining of Bruce Wayne's origin by geoff johns, not canon but still a really good read

Hush and no Long Halloween? LOL
Keep the good work.
hush is there
I say skip hush and read black mirror
As a newb this video should have been more focused instead of just naming 7-8 runs on Batman. Could have googled a list for that, never gave an opinion on how to actually start.
Wondering if I should keep watching your vids, just because you thought HUSH was not a good book ...
hey bros the killing joke comic is freaking expensive
its 10$
I hate hush too
The dark knight returns should NEVER be a comic for first timers.
