This and The Batman made me finally realize what Batman is. He will never be truly happy. He constantly thinks about his parents, and he constantly protects his home of Gotham from the crazies that inhabit it. And yet, he never breaks. If Joker thinks it takes only one bad day to damage someone for life, then in Batman's case, it only takes one good day to truly show someone that there is still hope. He evolved from the spirit of vengeance into the symbol of hope Gotham needs.
In the comic Kings of Fear. Batman talks to a physiologist in Arkham, and she tells him that despite the depressing world views of his rouges gallery, and outside their constant war, the crime rate has indeed dropped by a lot. That the recidivism of criminals drop to 2%, and because of that she managed to meet her husband a former criminal who got ‘re-educated’ by Batman and have a daughter. Meaning that despite all of Batman’s doubts he has helped Gotham and the world as a whole in ways he could never imagine. 😉
Aww that’s so sweet. I’m sure Bruce has moments of doubt, so it’s nice to see someone express to him that he makes a difference; that he is a force for good.
In another comic, it's mentioned that Wayne Industries pays for medical treatment and employment opportunities for the random goons Batman beats up. It's a good way of fixing one of the older problems with the character.
I LOVE the portrayal of "Batman" in Ego. The way he can turn on a dime from condescending to terrifying, the idea that Batman was born even before the Wayne's deaths even though Bruce didn't realize it yet, the hulking design and those ghoulish asymmetrical teeth. "My God." "Perhaps." CHILLS. EVERY TIME.
This is both a depressing and encouragint tale. The thing that seperates Batman from most heroes is that outside the mask and tights they have a life, but with batman it's almost only the mask. This comic shows that while bruce wayne does hate what his life's become he can't just pick the easy way out (While myself and any rational person would be fine with killing the joker). I feel like this truly cemets his moral and promise, in the years prior and a bit before he became batman he set out to avenge his parents but that solace and promise may never be fulfilled but at the very least he can protect even one life from the pain he fills that's enough. The fact he's willing to accept all the responsibilty for the lives he fails to save but to help make batman a symbol of hope to the people of Gotham speaks volume to me.
After hearing how buster killed his family and was getting that dark vibe I did not expect this man to say “ then buster proceeds to blicky himself” in such a cool calm manner ☠️👌
Of all the Batman comics written and published, Batman: Ego is my personal favorite. It's a character-driven one-and-done story, written and drawn by the great, late Darwyn Cooke, that remarks why Batman is my ultimate favorite character: a man who took pain and turned it into something good to help his city, yet for all his training, he doubts his mission, what his life could be like had he not devoted himself to becoming a creature of vengeance.
I like how the police now realize how useless they are against the Joker, to the point where they explicitly just create a perimeter and wait for Batman.
That ending was way too cute. Your videos are truly great, i can really lose myself in em and enjoy those awesome storys. i love your content, keep it up man.
I like your videos because _you_ like the stories you're telling. It is so much more interesting and exciting knowing you're telling me a story or sharing something that excites you, or moves you, or interests you. People can go to any channel if they were just looking for comic recaps, but there's something really great about the way you do it. We don't come here just because they're comics. We come here because they're comics told by you. You are just as important of a piece as the stories you tell. Like the two sides of batman and bruce wayne, you, and the stories -- together they make you a place I keep coming back to. Thanks man.
I'm a simple guy that read way too many comics as a kid. Single dad now. Struggling. But your vids among others help me to realise that it's the little victories every day that remind me I'm doing good. Seeing the smile on my boys face. Plus I like the your choice of stories to review. Don't stop my mullet haired friend. Much love from Australia. We can't change the world but we can make make people around us happy in hard times. Hey man, just want to say I really do love your videos, they've exposed me to so many amazing comics I'd otherwise have missed, and your presentation is always great. It's okay to take breaks from time to time so you don't burn out, I hope you're able to make videos for a long time to come
You are my favorite comic related channel, your videos help me wind down and forget things for a while. As long as doing RUclips brings you joy, I hope you never stop doing it.
I only found this channel a few days ago, but I ADORE that you focus on the comics rather than movies or even the shows, because that's where I've seen the best the superhero genre has to offer and it always bums me out that movies feel the need to "normalize" or "improve" characters and stories that have transcended decades and gave those movie-makers their jobs. It's good to know that there's a Mullet out there who can show why the comics have more to offer than loosely-adapted source material. Doubly so, since he can do so in short videos that don't miss the enormity of the emotions on display. Keep on keeping on.
Thank you, i think this video gave me a solid understanding of not just Batman as a concept, but you as an artist/creator as well, looking forward to the future :)
For what it’s worth, you still make me happy with your videos, they really help me get into a fascination I never knew where to start with, and have been excellent on my long nights in the shop.
Love your channel man. As long as you keep reading comics, I'll keep watching your stuff. You've given me solid recommendations. My favorite part about your videos is your ability to tighten the narrative but give all the essential points without missing the nuances (de-fillered if you will). Alongside solid editing. Great work. You're well on your way to doing incredibly well for yourself. The Algo likes you too
Batman is undoubtedly one of the most complex characters ever, the reason for him becoming a hero is so that no kid can suffer the same faith as he did but still he would still never kill a villian who keep causing pain and suffering to people. WHY? Beacuse he believes that everyone should be given another chance, but when does the final chance really come, when does the day come when you cant take it anymore and finally end it all?
i always love that a major plot point with batman is that he is often just as unhinged as the enemies he fights, and only through sheer will and the strength to hold onto his sanity he doesn't cross that line. its not that he doesn't understand killing the joker or others wouldn't save lives, nor that other superheros would break if they killed, its just that batman already has so many mental psychotic tendencies about him that him not crossing that line is genuinely all that keeps him from snapping entirely.
Yeah dude you should keep doing this. Comics are interesting but I don't have the time to read them, you pick really interesting and cool stories to talk about and sometimes I just start binging your videos. Mostly while on lunch breaks, and your shorts are also really good too!
Batman's always been the most interesting super hero to me. He's like the polar opposite of every other super hero ever. While others have super powers, he's just a regular flesh and blood human being. While others enjoy being heroes, Batman hates every second he spends as Batman. Every time that he puts on that cowl, he's sacrificing another day and night he could have spent living a normal life so that countless others can live their normal lives. Others often save others for the greater good. Batman saves others so that they and their loved ones might not ever have to experience the loss that he's experienced. Batman is the ultimate pinnacle of selflessness. As a hero without powers, he's genuinely risking his life every night in his crusade against crime. He's not super strong and nearly invincible like Superman. He's not speedy like the Flash. He can't conjure things with his mind like Green Lantern. The villains he fights, any one of them could get lucky and finally put him down for good on any given night. And yet, despite that fact, and the fact that he hates being Batman, he still wears the cowl night after night, keeping the people of his city safe. Because someone has to. Because whether he's capable of changing his city for the better or not, he is the only beacon of hope that Gotham has. The only thing the criminals fear.
I enjoyed how this story really explored the mind and views of batman. It started getting cringy and more edgy than believable about how batman carries himself before I saw this. Except for the people who actually spend enough time around Batman, most people don’t realize the what the real Batman is. That what most people see is actually a watered down or tempered version of all the fury, anger, viscous, and unrelenting vengeance seeking essence that Bruce keeps on a leash. Why Bruce doesn’t imbue himself powers because the temptation to go wild would be too much for him to resist. Similar to why he doesn’t just kill the truly heinous and irremediably beings like Joker, he wouldn’t be able to go back afterwards.
@@ivans3483 Batman's no-kill rule is a little bit more layered than that. It's true that he fears he wouldn't be able to go back if he were to kill, and that's usually the explanation he will give when others pressure him for an answer. However, he has another reason as well; It's not his job. He's not technically an official law enforcement officer, he's a vigilante who works together with law enforcement. His role is simply to apprehend criminals so that they can be dealt with by the local justice system. The issue is with the system itself that continues to not give mass murderers like the Joker the death sentence, and that issue isn't one Batman can fix. He can only highlight the problem and hope that some day change comes through proper legal methods.
@@Crow_Rising I’m aware there is more to it than just fearing he won’t be able to comeback from. Even the question of the legality. But that has always been a weak answer in my opinion. If he really cared he wouldn’t be Batman in the first place. If anything he only actually cares when heroes form groups and organize. A super powered organization with vast resources that exists outside the law that doesn’t necessarily answer to anyone but themselves. Sure it applies to himself as well that’s what he usually refers to when it comes to heroes who aid the law and order of the government but exist outside of it while technically having no jurisdiction.
@@ivans3483 He is Batman in the first place because someone has to be, and nobody else can. Bruce Wayne hates being Batman. He hates having to sacrifice his happy, peaceful life. But he makes that sacrifice every single night anyway so that as few people as possible ever have to go through the same loss he did ever again. Batman has also always been particularly weary of super organizations such as the Justice League specifically because there's nobody else who could keep them in check. He devised countless contingencies to handle any or every member going rogue specifically to avoid the League becoming corrupted by their own power. If they ever did, it would be a worst case scenario without him as they could simply shrug off and ignore any government telling them what they can or can't do. That doesn't apply to Gotham's local justice system however. It is a form of law enforcement that very much can be kept in check from within the local government through laws and regulations. To force change within a system that he's not even a part of would be going too far, and would make him something he really doesn't want to be. It's not his place in Gotham to make policy, but it is the place of many others. All he can do without crossing the line is bring attention to the corruption within the system and let those who's job it is to deal with such things to handle it themselves.
@@Crow_Rising let me be careful before I start going into the hole spiel of moral philosophy and yatayata and keep it as short and relevant as possible. He may hate being Batman but he also can’t just stop to be a happy person. Something irreversible broke within his soul/heart/mind when his parents died that he can never fix. He has filled that void with other things but never truly fixed it. Other people have carried the mantle so that isn’t true either about him being the only who can do it. Batman already passes judgement on folk when he catches them breaking the law by breaking them. As Bruce Wayne he does influence change within Gotham with his wealth and contacts as well and rightfully so as a citizen of Gotham. Batman may not lock you up but he sure as hell dishes out police brutality and bypasses a lot of rights to get answers out of people that he seems ok so that eventually the world changes enough that he won’t have to.
I still remember the moment I first realized we all die. Or rather, I remember the pit it left in my stomach once the penny dropped. I cried over it for a long while. I was perhaps 4 years old. It struck me that what Thomas said to Bruce was the exact thing my own father said to me in the same situation. I guess, what else can you say, eh?
I love you Mullet-Man. Thank you for each & every video you've ever uploaded. Yes, even the gameplay vids. These videos of yours really pulled me back from the edge when I was on the brink. You are, without a doubt, my favorite RUclipsr. You saved my life, no exaggeration... With Eternal Gratitude, Dante
I like how it’s left open to interpretation about whether Batman versus hallucinating do the blood loss, if there actually is a Bat Demon, or if Bruce is insane and this bat creature is just the manifestation of his madness. Personally, I chop it up to the blood loss, causing some hallucinations symbolizing, his internal conflict, but that’s just me
I love this art style, it's like year one mixed with btas, such a cool combination. also your videos are amazing, and even though i don't read comics myself anymore, you pick the best ones for me to listen to!
I haven’t been a long time sub but I can say that I feel the passion you have for good story telling. The effort put into your commentary is very encouraging to see with someone so young. I have never heard of this story which is somewhat astonishing because at the time I had a fairly heavy pull list. This does make me want to read this comic. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
This is mind-blowing and a symbolism of foreshadowing in the world of both Bruce Wayne and Batman. Even though he wanted to quit wearing the cape & cowl, it was his destiny to be the Dark Knight and the Savior of Gotham City, as well as the world
Your talking section at the end is very heartfelt, I personally really apreciate these videos, and i´m always looking forward to the mext one. BANGER. AFTER. BANGER.
Something I think was lacking in this was Bruce's realization that even as Batman he can find happiness for *himself* anyway. Sure there are people like Buster, but there are also people that choose to act for the better. If Batman could realize that he himself *is* that person that chose to act for good, maybe he would have felt better about who he wants to be. I know this is Batman -he isn't the most emotionally healthy, but this realization, even if it isn't internalized and felt fully, would be the most important core of Batman fighting for good. Otherwise he'd be as soulless as Earth 2 Batman or as nihilistic as Owlman. I just want to see Batman start from this depressive state and then *become* this aware in a story.
As a Batman fan ik Batman will never quit on Gotham cos he is the Gotham’s mightiest hero, he is the legend that is been pass down for many years, he is the darkest knight who scares off crooks, he is creature of the night, he is vengeance, he’s he’s the BATMAN! 🦇❤ That man is forever ♾️
Awh Mullet Man! You're the greatest ❤️ it's been so wonderful to see your channel grow so much, i remember wondering why you had so few subscribers and now suddenly you have a whole fan base. No one more deserving than you brother, keep making us happy!!
Hey. This video really helped me come to terms with something. I'll never be happy again, but I always find myself trying to guide others to that treasure. After being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and major depression, I always have my psychiatric history used against me, no matter how normal and helpful I am. My family provokes me to anger (by stealing from me, being disrespectful, lying, starving me, or insulting me) and then pretend to be victims. All they have to do is call an ambulance, then police show up alongside the ambulance and cart me away. I spent months getting sober and isolating to the point that I don't have any of the symptoms of the illnesses I was diagnosed with anymore, but it doesn't matter. But there is one thing that makes me feel good: I wear a set of armor and wield a massive sword. When kids ask me what the sword's for, I tell them I use it to fight demons. In reality, I started fencing to lose weight. I also use it to dissuade people from hurting me or others (I have stories), but I was debating on whether or not to put my skillset to real use. So, after watching this, I've decided: I'll make videos investigating paranormal activity and cryptid sightings. Furthermore, I might just go whole hog and fully lean into vigialtiism. The locals around here have been calling me a superhero anyway. Anyway, dude, thanks. Your videos are always so entertaining and insightful. You and the writer of this comic have inspired me. I know who I am.
You know I feel like Batman can be happy but refuses to do so. Even in the animated universe, he feels shame for being happy with a person that he loves and for considering to quit being Batman. But I do find it telling that in one comic, he accepts that he can be Batman and still be happy rather than invalidating Batman or Bruce Wayne, that Bruce Wayne can live and still choose to be Batman.
It would be awesome if you went more in depth at the end of what you liked about the comic. “I liked the part X because Y”. It’s cool to get the perspective
This was a very good Batman story, and a very personal message at the end. But look at it like this: you would not garner 350k subscribers if people didn't care about you or your stories. So here's to another 350k subscribers and beyond!
Imo, what's very clearly implied is that if batman killed Joker, he himself would lose control and also start killing people. He would also stop being a hero to the eyes of the public who look up to him. Once he crosses that line, it's only a matter of time before he crosses all the other lines until he's even worse than the joker he refuses to kill.
We've seen universes in which Batman crosses the line and kills... it *never* ends well. Check out the Batman Who Laughs, or the Grim Knight, Superman: Red Son, or even arguably *Batman: TBATB episode: The Knights of Tomorrow!*
Interesting idea posing that bruce did die once but thomas actually does succeed changing the timeline therefore we get the normal batman. Is that what's going on?

That screaming sound made me laugh unintentionally.
I was thinking it sounded like a guy in a public bathroom after eating a dozen taco bells 😆

The Demon Bat is Barbatos
I like how it’s left open to interpretation about whether Batman versus hallucinating do the blood loss, if there actually is a Bat Demon, or if Bruce is insane and this bat creature is just the manifestation of his madness.
Personally, I chop it up to the blood loss, causing some hallucinations symbolizing, his internal conflict, but that’s just me
i mean it always could be Barbatos the bat god

that last bit almost made me teary eyed, thnak you sir
Damn that bit at the end was wholesome asf tho.
I love this art style, it's like year one mixed with btas, such a cool combination. also your videos are amazing, and even though i don't read comics myself anymore, you pick the best ones for me to listen to!
10:07 Is that a photo of paul in the back?
Paul is Life.
Very apPAULing, don’t you think?
Please apaulogize
3:46 The Batman persona is like Bruce Wayne's Hulk in this comic.
batman has sacrificed so much throughout the time that none of the others ever did in DC
People always seem to forget Batman is as crazy as the people he fights

I haven’t been a long time sub but I can say that I feel the passion you have for good story telling. The effort put into your commentary is very encouraging to see with someone so young.
I have never heard of this story which is somewhat astonishing because at the time I had a fairly heavy pull list. This does make me want to read this comic. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
I loveeeee your videos I smile thru all your videos. The stories you tell give us Hope and a way to escape! Much appreciated
BANGER. AFTER. BANGER.
The art style makes me think of Batman the Animated Series.
I don't wanna be myself anymore, sadly, there's no quitting
You're one of my favorite comic youtubers man keep making awesome shit and we'll keep watching! 🤟
Really needed this today. Thank you
another banger video but a banger of a comic as well
This was a nice reading of an amazing comic.
I think I speak for most of us these videos are great. Me personally, they are the reason I am into DC comics now. Thank you 😁❤️
this is so human. thank you for your work!
Never stop never stopping!
That man is forever ♾️
Until Batman beyond lol

I thought you were kidding about the ghost of Christmas. 😂
Bro why tf Is Paul chillin on your desk 😭😭🔥
We won’t die for a long long time.

For what it’s worth, I appreciate your input on comics. Thanks.
Thanks for making videos (:
Amazing video!
Love this channel man, thank you
Awesome breakdown and video my guy 🔥🔥
Thank you for all the amazing stories you have told!
This is flippin' radical, man. Mathematical! I dig the end bit - it feels so sincere. I hope you review my books, one day.
Hey, you're a legend MulletMan, cheers!
Was this comic drawn by Bruce Timm? If it wasn't, it looks damn near identical to his style.
Really love your videos man. Always enjoy your content!!!
Makes you wonder how many lives could’ve been saved had BatMan killed the Joker years ago
Batman shouldn't be weighed with the responsibility of that, the government has the full ability to kill the Joker and constantly decides not to.
We've seen universes in which Batman crosses the line and kills... it *never* ends well. Check out the Batman Who Laughs, or the Grim Knight, Superman: Red Son, or even arguably *Batman: TBATB episode: The Knights of Tomorrow!*
It would probably cause another even worse villian to pop up, like a power vacuum.

Interesting idea posing that bruce did die once but thomas actually does succeed changing the timeline therefore we get the normal batman. Is that what's going on?
