Thanks for the debrief. I've been buying comics since the early 1960s, and now own a couple thousand comic books (stored in containers and packaged in bags and cardboards). I'm retired now and only purchase about a dozen or more trade paperbacks each year (from Dark House, DC, Marvel or Image comics). Hopefully the recent shift towards digital stories does not result in a decline in the value of my collection.
If anything, your collection would increase in value. With everyone going digital, your collection is collectable. You would definitely get a lot of money if you decided to sell. Right now, comics are a bit declined because they were huge in 2019-2022. Most comics are declining value but it'll bounce back. I'd wait until Marvel or DC makes another huge movie series and people flock back to comics. You definitely have some highly sought after comics with a collection like that. But at the end of the day, comics are meant to be read. If you want to keep them or hand them down, your grandchildren would probably enjoy them
Thanks for helping out an oldhead who is just getting back into it after a 35yr break. You hit it the nail on the head about being overwhelmed when stepping back into the comic book store. Your video definitely helped me out a lot. Much appreciated!!

@@waza987 no it really does not, manga is just as "childish" as comics and are just as "adult" as comics, it matters what u prefer or what medium has more stories u enjoy or resonate with

This is awesome, because I must say, as a huge fan of marvel and dc video games and film, I have been wanting to get into comics for awhile I’ve just been rather overwhelmed
Same here! That's where I started too but taking a slow approach is the best way to enter the comic world without getting overwhelmed to quick. Good luck, let me know if I can help with anything as you get started!
The thing i always hated about comics was how confusing it was to start a story. You always had to have read other stories before this one and manga generally doesn't have that problem but this video really helped me want to give comics an actual try.
I’m glad I could help with that! That was the biggest thing that tripped me up too from the beginning. It honestly still gets me sometimes too but not as bad
Most comics don't have this problem. Just marvel and DC. Comics outside of the Big 2 (image, dark horse, IDW, boom boom, oni, etc) work the same way manga does.
I'm liking your videos so far, I've been getting back into comics this December and just started reading titles I've been seeing in the past and never had a chance to read. I read the The Three Jokers comic for the first time and I really liked the art, the action and the story. I'm currently trying to get into more underrated characters in comics.
It used to be that my main source of knowing the comics was either my marvel encyclopedia that listed thousands of characters and major storylines they were in or it was by reading the wikis. While I'd say those are still my main sources, I did finally start to collect a few comics. Right now I've got two collected editions of Moon Knight. One is the Bendis run and one is the Lemire run. I've found that these character focused collected editions are super easy ways to just get into one character and story line. One of the main reasons I've had trouble with getting into comics is because often a character's solo run also has issues that pertain to an ongoing event. So the collected editions help trim the fat and just tell a single story. I will probably continue to just look for characters and storylines I find the most interesting and buy the collected editions so I don't have to hunt for random single issues that might not always fit the story. Great video by the way. You deserve more subscribers!
I have both of those Moon Knight books too! So good! I really enjoyed how out of the box Bendis’s book was. Totally agree on your points! Thank you so much for watching and supporting!
I absolutely LOVE The Amazing SpiderMan. The way Peter's a nerd, but kicks ass as SpiderMan, while at the same time having that goofy side in the cheeky one-liners. I've only just started collecting Comics. Got a couple of SpiderMan from Ebay, but i'm gonna have to pop into the local Comic Shop this Weekend. Might spend twenty quid, and pick a couple of four or five others i like. Love Batman, Spawn, Venom, Deadpool ( of course! 😂) and Blade. I think i might get some nice boxes for all the comics i plan on buying. Keep the dust off even though they'll have boards and sleeves. 😉😁 Take care. Greetings from the UK Friend. 👍🤝
Pleasure to meet you friend! Thanks for watching. That was the biggest thing that hit home the most with Spider-Man for me, he’s so strong and can take down any of his bullies but chooses every time to take the high ground. Love that about him. I love venom too! Reading through a big omnibus about him and Knull now and it’s so much fun!
My advice would be read what you like and don't get caught up in all the variants. It gets very daunty very fast like you said. Spent on year before i figured out how the stories and issues coincicde
Thanks for the video dude I’m a complete beginner in the comic book world since I’ve already read manga so this is a huge step in the right direction you rock
Awesome vid! Personally I never really considered getting into comics to be as difficult as everyone makes it. It’s like learning how to swim, just hop in literally just go to a comic shop and look around and trustfall right into it, the hobby will take you from there, cheers!
Great stuff man! I've been reading Conan for a couple of years and I'm starting to look at other characters like Spawn, Red Sonja and Black Panther. But my problem is the availability and that even Epic Collections are expensive and hard to get if you want to read the original stuff.
Great video! And very necessary. There must be a lot of MCU/DCEU fans who were interested in the comics over the last decade or so who got put off by how messy it all it. Compared to how easy it is with manga or the Walking Dead or something. It would be great if Disney+ had some features on the comics that inspired the movies, or other explainers that could help bring in more readers. Maybe even selling a curated selecting of comics at a stand at the movie theatre when the relevant movie is showing.
Awesome idea! That would definitely make comics for the MCU, for example, be much more approachable if Disney+ had a section pointing out relevant reads that help give more backstory. I really like what DC did at the end of the flash trailer where they told you the 3 big relevant reads to get an idea of where the story would go
My only problem is when there are thousands of issue 1’s. “Oh you like Batman, you should read Batman #1” “Yeah which one” !!!? That being said I’m trying to get into comics & I’m really surprised I have a lot of image, like more than the big two which is strange seeing as they are like the beginners of comics but I always see cool art for an image comic & just have to read it sometimes !
Yeah I just got really into comic books recently through the new Ultimate Spiderman series, I got the first 2 issues so far and I been really enjoying it. He’s been one of my favorite superheroes and I just heard about it through a friend they was redoing the ultimate universe series and thought why not, it seems like a good time to get into comics.
I'd recommend someone getting into comics for the first time to get just the newest issue of a book, as that will likely leave you confused since you'll likely be in the middle of the arc. Getting a trade paperback is a great way to start. This will be an entire story within one book. It'll last you a bit longer than a single issue will because it usually collects 6-12 issues. And it'll be better cost to material wise (trades are usually 12-20$ and you get 6-12 issues, where as an individual book will run you 3-5$. Talking to the workers is a great way to find a good trade for you. " Hey I like Black Panther and I'm looking for a collected story or a trade paperback to check out, any recommendations?" or "I really liked the newest Deadpool movie, I was interested in checking out a Deadpool story and only want to spend like 15-25 bucks, any recommendations?" They'll likely be able to find the great match for you interest. And if you don't like it and are willing to give it another try, tell them why. "I read The Killing Joke that someone recommended last time, but it was a little too gruesome, any lighter recommendations that are still focused on Batman?" The more information they have to go on, the better recommendations they can give.
This is perfect. Great tips! Building a relationship with the local comic shop helps a ton since they often have years of experience to help find a good jumping on point.
Thank you for this video it was very informative and now I have an idea of what to do when it comes to getting into the world of comic books! Since you’re a Nightwing fan are there any Batman recommendations that you can give me? Thanks in advance.
Thank you I’m glad I could help!! Some easy reads to get into that I’d recommend would be Batman Hush, Batman Failsafe (recent storyline), and Batman Court of Owls. They’re all in trade paperbacks so they’re easy to grab on Amazon and are not complicated storylines. If you like more of the big classics then I highly recommend Batman Year One, Batman the long Halloween, and the dark knight returns. Fantastic reads!
Unfortunately i'm lacking big time on star wars comics. Even the disney plus series' like Andor, Ashoka, and Mandalorian season 3 i have a lot of catching up to do!
When I was getting into dc comic at first. I was like okay I’ll buy just the green lantern omnibus and didn’t plan on jumping in to the whole lore of dc
That was my exact plan too for DC. I wanted to get the Geoff Johns omnibus but couldn’t afford it at the time, so I bought trade paperbacks one at a time of the main stories that lead up to Sinestro Corps war (rebirth, wanted, etc.) I highly recommend that similar kind of plan of just getting into a character you like and then spinning off from there to get invested in the whole universe
I just like batman a lot and want more batman stories than the movies provide. Can batman comics be as dark as the modern films? Or are they more light hearted? What's the general target audience for comics? I guess I'm just worried the stories might be too simple for my tastes. But I guess that's me assuming kids are the target audience for comics and maybe I'm wrong about that.
Generally target audience is 13+. If you’re expecting r rated grittiness you’re not going to find that in most books unless it’s a dc black label which generally has more of that stuff but apart from that the majority of new releases are not made for kids under 13. I’d say try out the new Absolute Batman that will be starting in October. Great jumping on point and for $5 you can try it out and see if it’s your style
