Full Basement owner response: "Customer was one of the biggest goofs I’ve ever seen. Came in with a camera strapped to his chest trying to seem important. Then never asked if it was ok to film, never introduced himself, nothing, just self entitled young goof, so I started messing with him right away. Let’s call him Strap On. So ol Strap On had a backpack full of common modern graded books and I simply said not interested, so he got mad that I didn’t make him look good for his stupid channel that nobody smart would ever watch. Then I tell Strap On I just moved and still don’t have tags on anything and to just ask, and he got mad. Then he asks about a 1st Spider Gwen which you can’t touch for less than $500 in high grade, so I give him a price, he got mad. Then Strap On pulled the number one cardinal sin of comic shops, he tried to sell his bookbag full of modern graded books to my customers in my store. Big Strap On claims to be an expert , guess not. So I kicked him out, and he got mad again, so he’s leaving this review. This is what local stores have to deal with when the comic con comes to town. You know you’re trash if the last thing you say on the way out is “This is going on RUclips”? , I hope so, so everyone can see how stupid and childish this guy is! The nerve, guys like this is exactly why I didn’t want to open back up to the public. --- Ps- Now after a few days of research I’ve learned this guy is a RUclipsr who thinks he knows more about the comic industry then the vets, and is a mark for our local competition, so now it makes sense that he was probably told all about us and was sent here by the goof zone. We are an old school style comic shop, we actual collect comics and have been in the business for almost 30 years. We don’t buy or sell online, we don’t do overpriced comic cons run by goofs, we don’t watch or need hipster advice, our prices and selection are the best in town, and we are not CGC marks, we are real comic collectors and have a real comic shop, not a goof zone for goofs like this!!! We collected comics before the internet existed and not a single other comic “dealer” in this valley, has a personal collection back stock like The Basement, the store he loves came out of nowhere and has no respect or credibility amongst comic legends in this town. Dudes like this are cancers to any hobby or business. Instead of listening to the long time dealers he listens to and gets tricked by dudes nobody knows or listens to. According to his channel and his reviews, he’s just a bitter little smuck who probably got ripped off one time cuz he doesn’t know anything, and now he’s after the comic business. I’ll be looking for your RUclips video, and I’ll make sure to make a rebuttal video of my own. We have an entire filming studio and Pro Wrestling arena in the back of the shop, plus my security footage, the part where he runs so fast out the front door when I came out from the counter was priceless, we can make a hilarious reenactment!!! Gotta find a little balding hunchback to play Strap On, anybody interested?" While he's not wrong that you starting to sell your stuff to customers is a bad move on your part, I don't think it warrants responding like a complete bully.
It seems to be that he got called out for doing some dumb shit, & now he's making a video bad mouthing these shops because he didn't get to do things his way, so who's really being the bully?.. He definitely comes across entitled, & bitter during his commentary. If he didn't ask to film, introduce himself, or at least have some sort of buying/selling etiquette while in another persons shop, then that's on him & the treatment was warranted.
@@TheCrownPrince78 Yeah he did sound bitter and entitled, especially when he comes across the guy at the counter and starts dissing him on his haircut and general demeanor, clearly there was a hitch. I still think the owner should have done without the easy insults like calling Strap On out on his baldness and implying that he has a pro wrestling arena ready to use lol the best answer you can give is a calm and thoughtful one, it usually completely outplays bad reviews.
@@lafanfarlo4872 I agree... The insults, & invite to a comic book wrestlemania smackdown to prove real collector dominance was a bit much, lol. At some point, someone has to be an adult, & neither one of them conducted themselves as such.
If it happened to you twice in the same day, probably you're in the wrong, my dude. Also, after reading the full owner's response, in one the comments here, I have to say that the owners were in the right for kicking you out. Finally, you didn't show the exact moments where you were kicked out, why? It's like you're trying to hide that you were in the wrong each time.
Unfortunately due to the decline in comic book sales and due to covid I have had to switch my lcs many times. And I've also had to go to other shops when my shop didn't have what I wanted I've always enjoyed talking to the people working there. They're friendly and helpful I did have one exception. But as they say the exception makes the rule.
@langreeves6419 Same here. My local owner is awesome and he does alot for the community, a nearby shop is a great little place. Almost everyplace I've been to is great except one in Ithaca. NY. Dude was an asshole. I was interested in a title and I asked him, you don't have the #1? He says "You don't read comic books do you?" I'M NOT GOING TO START READING FROM ISSUE #2!!I can't recommend going there. College town, too. Dude doesn't deserve to be in business with his rude sh*tty comments. The Lady that works there was supercool though.
Video popped up on my feed so I decided to watch. A few things: 1. You are on private property each time you enter someone else's shop. That means that they can tell you to not record them, their building, or have a backpack. It is their right. 2. If the shop does not want to do business with you, it's not a good idea to try and do business with their customers. This is their shop, and you are in their house. You do not know them, so be respectful of them. If you have stuff that you want to sell, exchange numbers and meet up later. 3. When the shop did not seem to want to buy the old ladies collection, that does not mean that you try to buy it yourself. Ask them point blank if they are interested in her collection. If they say no, then go after them. Don't assume. Keep in mind, the audio is not shown from any of your encounters. I would not be surprised if that shed some light as to some of the events that took place.
@@PatLund That's what he said but it was not in this video anywhere. He shows no lady, no collection, no trying to see he at the parking lot, no store worker chasing them down to not sell nothing. Notice he doesn't even use any audio at all whatever but dubs over it himself. Same with the other store, nothing is heard and all he does is dub over it all so you can hear nothing but what he is telling you that happened and what happened after that when he is not recording anymore for some reason. I didn't see that lady that lierally left the store and the employee going after them, nothing. Zero proof of anything and makes it more sus not having audio for any of these...
Getting kicked out of two shops in one day says more about you and your attitude than it does the owners. Be a little more respectful of others' businesses. You don't have to put them on blast, make fun of their looks, or complain about pricing-- about prices, make an offer. I can almost guarantee if they had recent GPA pricing you'd still offer less -- and 100% do not sell yourself or your product at someone else's store, parking lot, or wherever. A lot of your videos have been "these people suck" videos. Stop, reflect, mature, and proceed from there.
In all fairness you need to show a certain etiquette with other customers in their shops. For instance, you don't try to buy or sell comics when customers are in someone else's shop unless the owner approves it. When I am in a shop and someone walks in with something to sell, I always ask the owner if I can make an offer after they pass.
I think I’m all fairness though the owner is a d-bag for what he posted about him and deserves the backlash especially that he was already assuming things from the get go. Maybe he shouldn’t have offered anything to a costumer but owner needs a wake up call it seems
@@Stickygoose The owner was certainly unprofessional, rude and just a plain dick but you screwed up as well. If you are not hiding from that, you should have acknowledged in the video you were wrong to try and conduct business in someone's store. You didn't and by the look of some of your responses it seems like you don't care or have no respect for others business. This can't be the first time you do this but hopefully it was the last.
I've never been kicked out of a store and here you did it twice on the same day! But like others have said, walking into a store with a camera strapped to your chest and not asking permission to record video is rude. And certainly hitting up on one of the store's customers in the store about books you are selling is flat out wrong. Not surprised he kicked you out at that point. On the flipside, I don't see a problem with approaching the older lady about her collection in the parking lot if in fact the store had passed on the collection. Nonetheless, you might want to do some introspection about yourself.
I mean, comic shops can be some of the worst ran businesses ive ever stepped foot in, and it should be fairly common knowledge. But with that said, this guy does come off as pretty unlikeable already, then add in the attitude because of not liking how a store is ran (which you cant change by the way nor does it do anyone any good to act a certain way about it) added in with the other infractions like the camera and business, its not a big surprise. You know what i do when i go into a comic shop and realize i dont like the business as fast as he did? I turn around and walk out. Not start pushing some issue about an issue on the wall, getting an attitude but still hanging around looking at shit i know im not gonna buy, on top of walking into a store with a backpack that had a sign on the door saying you couldnt. I mean, what do you expect. Plus this guy is one of those nightmares that come into a store do a whole lot of handling and not alot of buying. Dude opens dollar bin books to check if they are flawless, its ridiculous.
Ouch. I respect Sticky for not deleting critical comments and taking suggestions but yeah, this isn't a good look... even if a comic store owner comes off as a d-bag, it doesn't mean you try to harm his business. He's got employees, customers, and obligations to Diamond or whatever... I don't think it's good for comics if shop owners have to worry that rejecting somebody will lead to a bad review whether on RUclips or Google... yeah, this was bad. You do sound kinda spoiled.
Getting kicked out of 2 shops in one day should be a bit of a wake up call to your tactics. Personally, I would have a problem with the video camera. Did you ask to film in the store? That would be the repectable way of doing things. Also, did you ask to make personal dealings with the store's customers? That would also be the right way to conduct yourself. Perhaps if you had been a little more respectful you would have walked away with a more enjoyable experience 😉
Nah, dude obviously doesn't think about anyone but himself. He thinks he's the main character and everyone should just abide by what he wants, or he resorts to insulting and trying to put down other people. Not a good business man, not a good buyer or seller and certainly not a good person in general.
With all due respect to your channel I hope you were able to take a lesson in humility from not one, but two shop owners kicking you out. First of all, as a comic collector you should approach comic shops with due respect and courtesy. Introduce yourself, especially because you are filming people and places that should not be filmed without their consent, so respectfully alerting them of your intentions is the way to be completely honest and transparent. Also, if you haven't learned this by now, I hope you realize how difficult it is to run and maintain a comic shop, especially when no one can afford the high prices of current issues. They've invested their time, hopes, dreams, and $$$ to provide a place for us comic fans to go to, without them we'd all just be online. Show some gratitude and empathy for all the $$$ it takes to try to survive as a business, it's not easy. Never, ever poach another business' customers. Not ever. That's the quickest way to sour your reputation. Whenever possible: Build bridges, don't burn them. Thanks for sharing this video. 🙌 Use your mistakes and hopefully new wisdom to be am example of how to do it right moving forward. Good luck.
I agree with these sub comments. Yelp wouldn’t exist if your idealism had any relevant truth to it because businesses should be open to public criticism so they can improve and compete. Business owners should be aware of the risks of losing profit and reputation, they are not a charity and should not be treated as one. As a consumer of both digital and physical comic books I would appreciate content like this who would inform me as a consumer so I don’t experience the same disappointment if a business is unable to deliver my expectations to earn my $$$$!
@@ernieb820you are on private property which is open by invitation to the public, there is no expectation of remaining there if they withdraw/rescind the invite.
A couple things stand out: 1 ) starting to film before asking permission is going to put most people on edge. 2) trying to make side deals within earshot of the owners is always going to piss them off. Gotta be more slick about it.
Look, I'm just going to give some advice. This fits in EVERYWHERE! Everyone on RUclips and TikTok think they can charge into any place and start filming. This is not acceptable behavior. It's good to always ASK if you can film. I would say most of the time, shop owners will say yes and they'll let you do your thing. Next, it's not cool to drag a book bag into a store. Frankly, I won't even take a bag from another store into another store. I always stop off at my car and do a drop off. Unless I'm at a convention or something. That is a bit different. But at a shop, for every ten honest people in a store with a backpack just looking around, there are a couple of grifters who are filling that thing up every time the shop owner is distracted. Naturally, this can put a lot of show owners off. Especially if you see a sign that says: "No book bags.", it's best to just go with the flow. It's usually best to talk a little, break the ice, and then maybe say: "Hey, I've got some books in my car. Would you like to check them out?" Next, a lot of places just aren't interested in buying from people off the street. They've got a big inventory and they just don't want to mess with it. Or trade. You could have some really good books, but they just don't care. They don't want them. Just let it go and move on. Finally, if you get a good conversation going, if what you're mostly after is selling or trading, it might work to your benefit. Someone is more likely to be nice if you look around, maybe buy some stuff, and then explain what you're about. At the least, you can see where things like and see if you should continue. Every shop is different. I know my local shop is very friendly toward buying or trading. More than me! If I had a dollar for everyone that comes in there expecting to make a fortune with their 90's trash, well, I would have enough cash to buy all of their 90's trash. Fortunately, the store owner is nice and always explains what they have, what it's worth, and why they might or might not be interested in it. As kind of a post script: A lot of us old school collectors can get a little put out by "key hunters". The quickest way to get on my bad side is to come running up and say: "Hey, you got any keys?" It's....Like a junkie looking for crack! With no chill! You've got to build a rapport. Or just ask for a certain book. The whole Comic Tom "You got any keys?" crap can put me off of somebody so fast I won't even talk to them. What keys do you mean? Gold Key? Giant-Size X-Men #1? Superman #19? I mean, if you're chasing the Comic Tom golden goose, surprise, you've already lost! A wise speculator will buy a ton of books and if they're lucky, one of them will pop expensive. If Tom is talking about it, you're too late and you're one of the ones that are going to get took. PSS: Some of us aren't big on graded slabs. We come from that generation where if you had a copy of Incredible Hulk #181 with no cover, you were the king of your school. That changed over to the people obsessed with condition in the 90's. And now it's become the people obsessed with grading. Reading comics and having runs seems to bore modern collectors, so they must have everything slabbed. But us old school dudes ain't into that. My local shop thinks I'm nuts because I always go for non-slabbed books. I just want to have something I can open, read, and feel like I gave my inner child from the 1980's something cool. I don't need a piece of plastic mounted on the wall. I've got a couple, but it's just because it's the only way I could get the books. Just remember that not everyone is into that. And just like it probably feels like I'm calling you out, some of those dudes probably feel like you're calling them out when you look at them crazy when they're not interested in slabbed books.
I've noticed most of the RUclipsr's who deal in comics aren't so much collectors as they are "flippers". I'm with you. I don't give a damn about slabs. I collect to read and finish the run. I've been looking for a RUclips channel that deals in RAW, not slabs, comics, not which comics can make you a quick buck, but I guess those don't get the clicks.
I'm looking for a youtube channel that just talks about the books and their stories. After I read a run or series, i feel like i am invested into them things and I want to talk with people about it. But sadly just about every channel is all about the grading and values of comics instead of the storylines and artwork. @@cjs616 Ya'll know any YT channels to recommend?
Shop 1: The guy definitely did not like you to start out with, but you do not own that business. Even if he never sold a single graded comic in there it does not give you the right to sell stuff in his shop. If you were selling something completely unrelated to comics it’s still wouldn’t be okay. Would you allow someone to come into your shop and sell stuff to people coming in to spend money with you? Shop 2: I don’t think you did anything wrong asking her in the parking lot when the shop already turned her away. That lady got serious FOMO when you said you were interested and she didn’t want you to have it.
The thing is there is no audio of any of this so nothing is heard, only what he is telling us through voice overs. For that second shop, not one time do we even see anything about another lady trying to sell her stuff or anything its just him looking around the shop the whole time. He is just saying what supposedly happened just like the first shop. No footage of that nor any audio to hear who was saying what and if he was just trying to get a rise out of shop owner one. He saw the sign about no backpacks or bookbags and comes in with a bookbag and shows the owner oh look I have a bookbag can I be in here to sell? Of course the first guy didn't like him when he first came in, because he literally showed him his bookbag. Making a first impression by breaking the rules to his face...yeah I wouldn't like him either that's already a huge entitlement flag...
Why have a store selling old comics? Every book I buy I will open and look at. He may have them priced a certain way and maybe the book condition does not reflect the selling price. So if I see the damage the price is wrong well then I can move on. I’m not gonna get scammed because someone will not show me what I am buying before hand .
I was kicked out of a shop called Other Realms in Champaign, IL. He had signs everywhere that said you couldn’t move out of the owner’s viewpoint from his perch at the front of the store. He had those old shoplifting mirrors from 80’s department stores also. I made the mistake of crouching down to browse the comics on the lower tier of his display shelves. He came barreling out from behind his safe space like a roaring bull. Immediately accused of trying to steal and kicked me out… forever banished to the Phantom Zone. He is out of business now. Died from Comic Shop Owner Paranoia Syndrome.
@@tobykeether1418 nah… but yer mother did… now come closer young’n and I’ll tell you a little secret… just a little closer… good… NO ONE GIVES A FLYING F ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS… no go cry hard.
That shop was the WORST! He was so nasty with anyone unfortunate enough to wander in there. There are some shops that cause more harm than good to the hobby and I am glad that he went out of business. Hopefully his inventory went to someone who treats their customers better than he did.
The shop owner pays rent and other various expenses to do business at that location. IMO, it is stepping on the proprietor's toes to muscle his business affairs. That is a legit ejection violation
@@TheSameoldjoe you cant tell this generation anything, they know it all and they are owed, dont you understand? "I'd say she was fair game" is such an asinine comment from an apparent grown man
I really appreciated your comment about not finding enjoyment about having stacks of long boxes in your closet that just stay hidden from the world. And also that you find joy in reading the comic stories (through ominibus or TPBs) and in collecting a few big keys. I totally agree.
If you get kicked out of 2 stores in less than one hour, maybe it's you?!?.....Everyone knows proper comic store etiquette is to not try to do business with customers in someone else's business. And I love how he tries to tell everyone how now to run a comic store business. What makes him such an expert? Oh, and if he's not happy with the store or employees, he just makes fun of them or the way they look. Trust me, I think I understand why they kicked him out now. Show a little respect and manners and maybe not get kicked out more often.
This guy (posting) is a goof. To think he could hang around a shop trying to sell to the customers in a shop is obnoxious. Plus, his overall tone is condescending…
I get that as a collector I like it priced. As a store owner it was near impossible on items that change monthly. No one is happy so I would price it then have a big sign and note that the price was only an indication and would be changed up or down. Some hated that too:)
First and foremost, the proper thing to do is ask if they mind you filming in THEIR establishment. Secondly, attempting to sell your books to one of his customers is way out of line. The customer came to see him, not you. That’s two strikes. I would throw you out as well.
Imma be real man- whilst these owners sounds utterly ridiculous and I won’t be shopping in their stores anytime soon, you probably shouldn’t try to make business with their customers in front of their face. *and* it would be courteous to ask permission to film inside of their store before you go in. Like, call beforehand. I’d be miffed if I was just working a register and someone had a camera shoved in my face out of nowhere too….
Sticky Goose- you can't sell your books - in another guys shop - at least w/o his permission. He'd be letting you siphon away what would be his business opportunity by letting you transact in his shop. Outside in the parking lot is a different situation !
As someone who owned and worked at stores most of his life, the one thing that we don't like is when customers try to sell to our customers. We need that money to stay money, we don't want someone coming in and undercutting us. A lot of stores will kick you out if you try to do something like that or if someone coming there to sell us something and you try to jump in.
Second one looked like a cool old school shop. Sucks most of them closed down around here. Not everyone buys comics to sell & trade. Some of us still enjoy browsing the comcics shop to find a new read.
The cardinal rule of any business (collector/comic shops esp) is you never ever ever attempt to sell something to one of their customers inside or even in the parking lot of their store! They have lots of time and $$$ invested in a business like that and it is exceptionally disrespectful to undercut them in anyway ! It would be like you having a table/setup at a show where another vendor has someone standing by telling every customer " Hey I will sell you that $5.00 cheaper !
Im local to the area Strap On decided to visit, and have done a lot of business with both the Collectors Lair and The Basement, and are familiar with both owners. All this being said this dude is completely off his rock! What kind of drama queen has to come up with all these crazy details just so it doesn’t seem like they’re making an ass of themselves. It’s common sense that you don’t try to do your own business with a customer that’s in someone else’s store, that’s just rude and unprofessional. Both the young lady that works at Collectors Lair, and the gentleman from The Basement conduct themselves in a very professional and kind manner with their customers. While I can’t refute the issues such as The Basements hours and Lairs cluster of stuff piled all around they both have a right to making their own hours and visual conditions with their business(not all stores have the money for property big enough to fit their inventory). This guy probably has no idea the number of people that both businesses have to put up with that conduct themselves the same way that this guy does so it doesn’t surprise me that both were so quick to show him to the door(if that’s even really how it happened)I guarantee you if the tables were turned and this guy had to put up with people that act like he does he’d be just as quick to point them towards the exit. Instead of taking a moment to step back and have some self reflection, this dude decided to run to his RUclips channel and bash the reputations of two businesses he’s only visited one time, and completely disregard both owners right to privacy. It’s people like this that give collectors a bad rep because all they do is go complain and point the finger when things don’t go their way or God forbid when they get called out for acting stupid. I felt like watching this caused harm on my already limited brain cells. Ps- The Collectors Lair is a Christian business, that’s why they play Christian music smart guy
What kind of drama king... is a RUclips Influencer, you see. Not judging but its just the name of the game.. these guys have RUclips channels, they want to promote their shows, they want to get views.
Stickey you did make a few etiquette choices that are not particularly favorable on your side. But as for the Basement, I live in the area and been to the Basement when they were in Happy’s flea market and at their Williamson road location, they did have 2 owners, one of the owners could be hard to deal with and talked down to you, I don’t know if he realizes how he comes off but his partner who dealt with the comics and wrestling merch was a down to earth guy and would at the very least chat you up and be personable. I don’t go to the Basement much because than can be a bit high on prices. Collectors Lair well it is what is, it does need a lot of organization, but they have always been nice and courteous to me, the Christian music thing is new to me haven’t been there in awhile but it is their store so they are aloud to play what they want. B&D is my LCS, they don’t have a lot keys usually but the staff is always extremely nice and willing to work with you, they do right by their customers and go out their way to get what you want especially with newer books. I hope you had a good time at the con, it is ran by another Comic shop in the Roanoke area Big Lick comics, it is family owned by 2 brothers and they are a great to deal with also.
I generally ask permission to do business in someone else's place. And always give them something for facilitating whatever you did. You can make a LOT of business associates by doing it that way
I use to live in Roanoke, Virginia for about 25 years. I only remember one good comic shop. B and D comics! Don’t know if you’ve been in there already, but I think it would be cool to see you check it out for that little hit of nostalgia❤
I went into this video wanting to hopefully agree with you against the shops that kicked you out but hearing what you did, stepping on their business even when they were uninterested in certain things, that's a major business faux pas. If you had wanted to do these things you needed to do them far more discreetly than you did and away from the store owners or employees. I know my local comic book shop owner would probably kick you out too, or at least give you a warning that you can't do those things there.
Perfect representation of todays comic community… a million followers but no comic shop etiquette 😂 I enjoy comic content online n it’s cool to blow up using it as a niche but sheesh if your getting thrown out of two separate shops and thinking these 30 year old shops (I read the owners response)… are the problem 😂 them calling you strap on was funny cause I can imagine the youtuber starter kit strap on lol. I learned real early these type a shops love dealing with comic collectors and can sence a niche channel. Funny video overall better luck this weekend 💪🏼
After watching this, I’d echo other folks on you probably should have gotten some kind of clearance with the shop owners and the camera. Prior to walking in. The first incident I’d never do that while in the shop. The second incident is sort of a gray area. You were outside of the shop. So technically no foul there. Personally I’d never sell my collection to a store. Trade? Sure. But eBay. eBay is where it’s at. You’re always going to be at a deficit at a shop or a convention. The dealer is going to want a break so they can flip the book and make some money.
Yeah, some comic shop owners are going to be dicks. Those are the ones I don't return to and some are stand up guys! The shop in my area is cool because I go there often and the owner knows me as one of his most frequent customers!
This store known as The Basement is exactly like a store where I live. The owner is a jerk. Poor business acumen. Store has a clique vibe to it as well. I stopped going after the owner dissed me at the register. His loss. Must be doing well to be able to treat customers poorly. 😐
Reminds me of a few places I've been. I remember once a guy came into a shop with a framed Spiderman poster. It was a really nice poster too. The guy asked the owner if he would like to buy it from him. The owner said no do you. One of many bad experiences there. I stopped going to that after 2008..
Come on man, you cannot try to solicit business from a customer while still in the shop. Also, I don't appreciate the mocking of people's appearances. That's not entertaining or funny to me. Regardless, these are my favorite types of videos. I love seeing different shops and also seeing your journey there and any pitstops you make (like for a beer or snack). Can't wait to see you and Basement duke it out in that pro-wrestling arena 😉
I just stumbled on this video so I'm not a regular viewer but I really gotta agree with the shop owners. Your not a regular at either store yet you want to make deals with their customers. That is a cardinal sin in a small business of any kind and you deserved to be kicked out. Heck If you pulled that stunt at my local stores, Id help the shop owner kick you out.
There are two things I watch on RUclips.... comic book videos and 1st Amendment audits so what I am about to say come from watching the latter. When that guys looked at you that way, was it because you were wearing a backpack or because you were filming. For some reason if you are filming, it sends people into a blind rage. I don't think it was the backpack. I think it was the camera. People do not and I mean do not like to be filmed!
Thanks for posting. I have plenty of long boxes of comics in my closets because I'm married. My Wife is cool about my having so many books, but she doesn't want them all over the house. I also know what I have and each box is appropriately titled with raw and CGC books. I don't speculate and I prefer to read/collect the Marvel Silver age. As for trying to do business in someone's shop well, that just a no no. The owner was rightly pissed so, your bad on that. Now about the lady in the parking lot. Did you at least exchange phone numbers or do anything there? That sounded like something of interest. Thanks for the tour of your LCS's. I found it interesting. Best to all.
I'm not on your side on these experiences. But you're also taking it personal by trashing them. You may not like a store that has boxes to the ceiling but I actually like diving for treasures. It may not be your thing but it may be someone else's. What is it that would of made you happy? A clean organized store, k-pop music playing, owners with a happy face and keys priced really cheap waiting for you to buy them? LOL
Man, I sure am glad you made this video! Seems as though you couldn’t have your cake and eat it too that day! But you sure did eat some cake the latter part of your day! I used to live in WV. I’m in FL now and starting to slab some of my old comic collection hopefully for profit. Thanks for sharing! Im glad I was lucky enough to discover you!
The second shop was fair game, he didn’t just step in as soon as the old lady spoke about her collection. He waited until the girl who clearly had no idea what she was doing turn down the collection. The old lady was heading to her car. He’s supposed to miss out on deal because YOU don’t know how to run a business?
I’ve been buying trade paper backs since I feel I’m getting better deals when it comes to value at some used bookstores and comic books stores. I actually have the Sentry trade paperback you were looking for and I think I purchased mine for $12 and saw it on eBay selling for $60.
Oh the drama! 🍿 I’m sorry about the shitty experience. I’ve been in that situation at a shop where the clerk wasn’t interested in buying what another costumer was trying to sell. I jumped in to inquire the customer about buying. I sensed that the clerk was a bit uneasy so I asked if it was OK. The clerk kind of shrugged and suggested we just do the business outside which seemed fair. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Soliciting business inside another person's business is wrong. Why would any store owner let you talk to their customers and make side deals in their store? They are trying to run a business and you are attempting to steal business away. You were wrong, and you should never do it.
@@Stickygoose Go ahead and open a store. Spend the time and money to get a business open. You would not last long if you let other customers come in and steal business inside a building you pay rent on every single month. Think about it.
Farts come from the Rump.... It's like a little "Bump"... that smells like cottage cheese, just smell it if you please, I like to tell you about the Gas that's passed!!! *pfffftttt* aw smelly
I burly started collecting comic about 3 months ago, I’ve visited many comic shops around my area not once did I ever walk asking for hot keys, half of the fun collecting is going through the boxes & bins and finding something you might like.
Wny would you not know what you have in your boxes? Just put a clear pocket you can put a peice of paper in that tells you what's in the box, as your collection grows and your forced yo resrrange you can change the paper with updated information. Also, you could use a storage ststem instead if stacking the boxes.
I used to live in Newport News, VA up until 2012. I remember all the jokes. Currently I´m in Panama, and I haven´t been to a comic shop in ages. I also love Books A Million and Barnes & Nobles when I go back on occasional trips back to the US. It kind of explains why my luggage weight allowance going back is just pushing it. Also I´ve recently been interested in the reissues of the classic EC horror comics in the thick volume format.
The Basement is a type of store where they don't try to sell stuff, they only wanna display their collection. Did the other customer talk to you first about making a business deal? If so, tough shit for the owner. If you initiated it, I would personally either wait for them to leave the store or be very quiet about it. I personally wouldn't buy anything from those store owners. Bad vibes.
TIP: “hey, how’s it going? My name is (whatever). I have a RUclips channel centered around comic books and so forth. Do you mind if I film as I browse?” -those should be your first words. Everytime. Man I’m not even a “collector” but just from your tone I can tell that you have an arrogance about yourself that would force people to become defensive. It’s as if you walk in to a business owners place of biz and want to grace them w/ your presence and tips on how to do what they’ve [apparently] been doing for years, better. Being nice is literally the difference between “hey get outta my shop” and the owner getting your number and calling you when he gets some top shelf material in.
As always you are a great storyteller, very engaging. So did the owner who gave you the death stare cuz of the backpack kick you out for talking to other customer, or was it really an accumulation of backpack, asking about the hard to reach books, AND talking to customer? He was like "okay, too many violations, you're DONE".
What I ask yall to consider is that a store owner HAS to profile and assess someone because Shoplifting is so rampant and can harm the bottom line. I've seen owners quickly gauging me if they dont recognize me and I dont get offended because i get it.
I rarely go to comic shops anymore. I get my books online. I save money on gas, get my books at discounted prices, and don't have to worry about unfriendly shop owners.
Loved the video and I have had a few experiences that almost made me get kicked out of comic shops but cooler heads prevailed since I had a friend with me that kinda pulled me out of the shop. Also I use to frequent an LCS up in Rochester NY that looked so similar to that mess of a shop Collectors.....whatever in Roanoke. Only good thing with mine was the shop never checked what they had and all the comics were $1.50 no matter what it was(nothing older than 1999) but have found gems like Avengers #148 and Flash Vol 2 #92 for a steal.
You appear to have detected the social cues early on, mate. Some persons, including (but not limited to) comic-book shopkeepers, will not like you, seemingly for little to no reason or provocation, and truly do not appreciate your company nor desire your patronage. Based on the shopkeeper's response to your review/complaint concerning him, I have little doubt that the bloke who manages the Basement is not a terribly friendly fellow overall. It is wise, I believe, to not internalise his attitude or treatment as being indicative of a tremendous transgression on your part.
Great video. I will say you were probably in the wrong at the first shop you got ejected from. But the second one was a little of an overreaction on their part. They refused and as far as I’m concerned those books are fair game. If you’ve left their store and are in the parking lot you are now conducting YOUR business. I do have a question though. Do you introduce yourself and ask permission to film? I imagine some people are reacting to you the way they are because they’re not interested in being filmed. A store is private property and therefore they are well within their rights to ask you to stop filming or leave. I’m assuming they know you’re filming but instead of asking you to stop they just get salty with you? No matter what though I dig the channel and your videos. Keep it up man
In the 90s when comic book stores were on every other corner they were welcoming and engaging, now comic book stores often treat you like you're breaking into their house and rifling through their shit
Dude this blew my mind. I clicked on this not even knowing that you're in Roanoke and coincidentally see all of the comic book stores I grew up going to.
Wow that was a crazy day you had there. Sad part is I have actually been in shops that looked exactly like that before. I don't even know why these people are even in the business of selling comics or any other type of collectibles if they don't care about the products they are selling or even the customers for that matter. These types of businesses should be called out so that the rest of us know not to give them the time of day.
First video of yours I saw, but I gotta agree… doing business at another’s brick and mortar isn’t fair. Also while not always necessary it is a nice gesture to ask a business owner if you can film before guerrilla filming. Overall love the multiple shop format. If that’s one day your life seems like I’d rather watch! Super busy!
Some coin shops are they same way. Walked in one I was never at before in Wall Twp, NJ with my dad (he was actually not even thru the door yet) and the owner comes up and says "what are you looking for?" I said "I was never here before and wanted to check out what you have". He put his arm up towards us and said we can look at his stuff on Ebay. He kicked us out right then and there. The guy was rude and I make it a point every time I talk coin shops with others not to go there.
I think it’s weird that 1st place didn’t do slabs but he had a 1st appearance of Carnage in a slab I also think it’s hilarious he said he just moved so I don’t have tags on I’m assuming on his wall books if the guy is too lazy to write prices on sticky notes and put them on the wall books like my LCS does then he shouldn’t be displaying them until they’re priced especially if he’s only open from 12-4pm I know shops that bag and board every new shipment of new books 150 different books and multiple copies and he can’t price 80 books with a marker and some paper Also that 2nd shop definitely a nightmare it’s so cramped it also looks like a fire hazard if she let those books walk out the door they’re fair game if she wanted them so badly she would’ve got them Well at least the day wasn’t all a loss i know of magic cards but don’t know rarity but it sounds like you got a great deal on the cards and bike Fantastic video sticky strap on goose maybe it’s cause I’m so used to my shop I’ve been going to for 15 years but I’m cool with the owner I do a lot of business and he helps me find books I’m looking for like I bought some pre code horror the Voodoo collection from IDW I didn’t see Vol 1 so he checked his 2nd store and tried to order me a copy only Vol.2 was available for order 1&3 were out of print but he told me if one comes in he’ll hold it for me
Full Basement owner response: "Customer was one of the biggest goofs I’ve ever seen.
---
Ps- Now after a few days of research I’ve learned this guy is a RUclipsr who thinks he knows more about the comic industry then the vets, and is a mark for our local competition, so now it makes sense that he was probably told all about us and was sent here by the goof zone. Gotta find a little balding hunchback to play Strap On, anybody interested?"
While he's not wrong that you starting to sell your stuff to customers is a bad move on your part, I don't think it warrants responding like a complete bully.
This guy sounds like a grade a Douche Canou.
None of the commentators above own a sense of humor.
Exactly right.
You get it!
Unfortunately due to the decline in comic book sales and due to covid I have had to switch my lcs many times.
And I've also had to go to other shops when my shop didn't have what I wanted
I've always enjoyed talking to the people working there. They're friendly and helpful
I did have one exception. But as they say the exception makes the rule.
They can try. Doesn't mean it's gonna happen...
A few things:
@Len H sounds like you're looking to impress someone. I don't know who that is but it ain't me.
The lady literally had already left the store without them buying her collection...
There’s a reason why he got kicked out of TWO stores I’m sure
@@sirfrancisdrake6956Yeah, because people are pansies. Most comic shop owners are douchebags. This is not debatable.
He love you comment which means he doing it for the clicks
In all fairness you need to show a certain etiquette with other customers in their shops. For instance, you don't try to buy or sell comics when customers are in someone else's shop unless the owner approves it. When I am in a shop and someone walks in with something to sell, I always ask the owner if I can make an offer after they pass.
Totally agree with the point above.
Man I never knew how crazy sellers are...
I think I’m all fairness though the owner is a d-bag for what he posted about him and deserves the backlash especially that he was already assuming things from the get go. Maybe he shouldn’t have offered anything to a costumer but owner needs a wake up call it seems
I was in the wrong. I admit that and I'm not hiding from it.
You do sound kinda spoiled.
exactly this
bros a man child
Oof, this one kinda backfired on ya didn't it?
Yep😅
Getting kicked out of 2 shops in one day should be a bit of a wake up call to your tactics. Personally, I would have a problem with the video camera. Did you ask to film in the store? That would be the repectable way of doing things. Also, did you ask to make personal dealings with the store's customers? That would also be the right way to conduct yourself. Perhaps if you had been a little more respectful you would have walked away with a more enjoyable experience 😉
You're probably right
Nah, dude obviously doesn't think about anyone but himself.
Good luck.
Their is no expectation of privacy in spaces open to the public
@@ernieb820no there isnt, but showing some respect is never wrong.
Great comment.
A couple things stand out: 1 ) starting to film before asking permission is going to put most people on edge. 2) trying to make side deals within earshot of the owners is always going to piss them off. Gotta be more slick about it.
thats my problem too honest
It’s not about slickness or honesty l. You don’t do business in people’s stores. Period.
he asked AFTER the rejected the deaf woman , its pretty much fair game after that.
@@azaz...not in the parking lot of the business. It’s still their property
@@masonj4779 so what? Even so IS the parking lot their property or the complex?
Would you like to check them out?"
Next, a lot of places just aren't interested in buying from people off the street.
Well said...
Many comic shops don't want people pulling books out of bags. Easy to damage and swap.
That shop was the WORST! He was so nasty with anyone unfortunate enough to wander in there. There are some shops that cause more harm than good to the hobby and I am glad that he went out of business. Hopefully his inventory went to someone who treats their customers better than he did.
Maybe too many people already ripped him off or came in there to damage books. Can't believe he started out acting that way to still be in business...
The shop owner pays rent and other various expenses to do business at that location. IMO, it is stepping on the proprietor's toes to muscle his business affairs. That is a legit ejection violation

Agree 100%
I really appreciated your comment about not finding enjoyment about having stacks of long boxes in your closet that just stay hidden from the world. And also that you find joy in reading the comic stories (through ominibus or TPBs) and in collecting a few big keys. I totally agree.
Yes! Thank you!
Show a little respect and manners and maybe not get kicked out more often.
lollll comic book guy is a real person haha
This guy (posting) is a goof. To think he could hang around a shop trying to sell to the customers in a shop is obnoxious. Plus, his overall tone is condescending…
Prior to filming at a store I call a week in advance and talk to the owner to tell them what we’re about. You should try that.
The worst comic shops are the ones where nothing is priced and they look up values and price things on the spot. Those shops suck biggly!
I’d be miffed if I was just working a register and someone had a camera shoved in my face out of nowhere too….
and disregarded the sign on the door right off the bat so of course the guy was like what is this guy doing
Where do you work...camera crew on the way....🙀
Sticky Goose- you can't sell your books - in another guys shop - at least w/o his permission. He'd be letting you siphon away what would be his business opportunity by letting you transact in his shop. Outside in the parking lot is a different situation !
I messed up Jim I confessed to my sins
As someone who owned and worked at stores most of his life, the one thing that we don't like is when customers try to sell to our customers. We need that money to stay money, we don't want someone coming in and undercutting us. A lot of stores will kick you out if you try to do something like that or if someone coming there to sell us something and you try to jump in.
Sunshine had no interest in deaf woman’s collection
@@Stickygoose Whether she did or not it's the principle. Do not sell to customers who are in a shop that has to pay rates and taxes.
You Never try to negotiate deals, buy or sell to other customers in someone else's shop.

Go to Heroes and hobbies in Beaverton OR.
Thanks for watching!
What kind of drama king... is a RUclips Influencer, you see. Not judging but its just the name of the game.. these guys have RUclips channels, they want to promote their shows, they want to get views.
Thanks for your opinion.. shill
@@uglyewok6715 Typical guy hiding behind online profile talking tough 😄 You'd never talk to these men like this IRL
I generally ask permission to do business in someone else's place. And always give them something for facilitating whatever you did. You can make a LOT of business associates by doing it that way
Seems like u didn't ask if u could take that xmen adventures out of the bag. Hope u did.
If you went into a McDonald’s and start cooking up and selling your own hamburgers, do you seriously not expect to get kicked out?
Perfect representation of todays comic community… a million followers but no comic shop etiquette 😂 I enjoy comic content online n it’s cool to blow up using it as a niche but sheesh if your getting thrown out of two separate shops and thinking these 30 year old shops (I read the owners response)… are the problem 😂 them calling you strap on was funny cause I can imagine the youtuber starter kit strap on lol. I learned real early these type a shops love dealing with comic collectors and can sence a niche channel. Funny video overall better luck this weekend 💪🏼
You have no clue what your talking about lol
perfectly said
It is a great store. The owner is very nice and has key comics..
He wasn't there to buy. He was there to sell & trade, neither of which pays the bills for the shop.
Reminds me of a few places I've been. I remember once a guy came into a shop with a framed Spiderman poster. It was a really nice poster too. The guy asked the owner if he would like to buy it from him. The owner said no do you. One of many bad experiences there. I stopped going to that after 2008..
These shop owners are completely clueless
Not cool to not ask permission to film. Even less cool to attempt to sell comics in his shop. This guy is trying to run a business.
I think he’s trying to run a wrestling promotion
Did you end up buying that lady’s collection?
Yeah, but you're in the wrong here.
I love watching these videos. I'm getting back into comic book collecting after a few years when I sold my last collection. I greatly regret that.
Welcome back
Who are you again?
@Stickygoose Who me? Just your friendly neighborhood spiderman.
No doubt
LOL
....yes
Man, I sure am glad you made this video! Seems as though you couldn’t have your cake and eat it too that day! But you sure did eat some cake the latter part of your day!
I used to live in WV. I’m in FL now and starting to slab some of my old comic collection hopefully for profit.
Thanks for sharing! Im glad I was lucky enough to discover you!
The second shop was fair game, he didn’t just step in as soon as the old lady spoke about her collection. He waited until the girl who clearly had no idea what she was doing turn down the collection. The old lady was heading to her car. He’s supposed to miss out on deal because YOU don’t know how to run a business?
bingo!
I was just reading some of the comments. What did you get yourself into this time. lol
The term goof is pretty accurate.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
at Stickygoose corporation we are built on drama
I still haven't found a solid shop anywhere near 81. I get bummed that I can't make any stops once I get past PA to Virginia.
Soliciting business inside another person's business is wrong. Why would any store owner let you talk to their customers and make side deals in their store? They are trying to run a business and you are attempting to steal business away. You were wrong, and you should never do it.
Wow
@@Stickygoose Go ahead and open a store. Spend the time and money to get a business open. You would not last long if you let other customers come in and steal business inside a building you pay rent on every single month. Think about it.

I burly started collecting comic about 3 months ago, I’ve visited many comic shops around my area not once did I ever walk asking for hot keys, half of the fun collecting is going through the boxes & bins and finding something you might like.
The basement has a rep because of that owner. He is known as a jerk who runs his store like a local friend club. Sorry you had to experience that!
live and you learn
do you have a phone holder for your chest or something how did you get that shot?
its a go pro
Kicked out of two shops in an hour? That sounds like a you problem
Wny would you not know what you have in your boxes? Just put a clear pocket you can put a peice of paper in that tells you what's in the box, as your collection grows and your forced yo resrrange you can change the paper with updated information. Also, you could use a storage ststem instead if stacking the boxes.
Seems like a lot of effort
@@Stickygoose not everyone has the discipline required to curate a collection. It's good you acknowledge your limitations.

Great video from start to finish but I have to say that, the comment section is absolutely the best part of this video. Thanks for sharing.
Cool love ec horror
You’re kinda tacky to poo poo prices and cut deals on his shop floor with his customers.
Went to a shop today bought two books didn't get kicked out it was weird ..that dump shop is probably were you will find a good book ..you gotta dig
You don't do business in someone else's store. D move.
Is that bad?
Gonna set up a comic book shop just so I can kick you out.
I wouldnt expect anything less
Predator Hunters #1 behind that crow comic at the first shop 👍🏼
I would have definitely got that.
Nothing Wrong With Christian Music 🙏🏼
Hey sticky, another comic and bike nerd here! Love the content
what do you ride mountain or road?
The Basement is a type of store where they don't try to sell stuff, they only wanna display their collection. Did the other customer talk to you first about making a business deal? If so, tough shit for the owner. If you initiated it, I would personally either wait for them to leave the store or be very quiet about it. I personally wouldn't buy anything from those store owners. Bad vibes.
TIP: “hey, how’s it going? My name is (whatever). I have a RUclips channel centered around comic books and so forth. Do you mind if I film as I browse?”
-those should be your first words.
Being nice is literally the difference between “hey get outta my shop” and the owner getting your number and calling you when he gets some top shelf material in.
lol you were not there bill
You just seem like somebody that's pretty hard to get along with
Love your videos Stickygoose. Your definitely not the only one who's recieved a lot of unnecessary arrogance from comic book dealers.
I didn't know comic shops were doing so well that they can afford to drive off customers
lol
after reading all of these comments my friend. I WOULD RETIRE FROM THIS TYPE OF ACTIVITIES BUBBA.
Yeah I’m sure it was the accumulation. The guys rebuttal to the review admitted he didn’t like him right away.
the talking to the other customer was the straw that broke the camels back
What I ask yall to consider is that a store owner HAS to profile and assess someone because Shoplifting is so rampant and can harm the bottom line. I've seen owners quickly gauging me if they dont recognize me and I dont get offended because i get it.
Right or wrong thanks for the video.
I rarely go to comic shops anymore. I get my books online. I save money on gas, get my books at discounted prices, and don't have to worry about unfriendly shop owners.
You’re smart
Cool I live in Princeton WV and been to Roanoke va tons of times hunting movies, toys, and other stuff. Bever been to the basement tho
Hop skip and jump on 460
Great video. Keep it up man
Did u ask to film inside the store ?
In the 90s when comic book stores were on every other corner they were welcoming and engaging, now comic book stores often treat you like you're breaking into their house and rifling through their shit
Dude this blew my mind. I clicked on this not even knowing that you're in Roanoke and coincidentally see all of the comic book stores I grew up going to.
Now you know may pain
Super busy!
I'm so sorry, but those first two shops you visited are absolutely pathetic. That is not the way you treat potential customers.
Great video
I think it’s weird that 1st place didn’t do slabs but he had a 1st appearance of Carnage in a slab
I also think it’s hilarious he said he just moved so I don’t have tags on I’m assuming on his wall books if the guy is too lazy to write prices on sticky notes and put them on the wall books like my LCS does then he shouldn’t be displaying them until they’re priced especially if he’s only open from 12-4pm
I know shops that bag and board every new shipment of new books 150 different books and multiple copies and he can’t price 80 books with a marker and some paper
Also that 2nd shop definitely a nightmare it’s so cramped it also looks like a fire hazard if she let those books walk out the door they’re fair game if she wanted them so badly she would’ve got them
Well at least the day wasn’t all a loss i know of magic cards but don’t know rarity but it sounds like you got a great deal on the cards and bike
Fantastic video sticky strap on goose maybe it’s cause I’m so used to my shop I’ve been going to for 15 years but I’m cool with the owner I do a lot of business and he helps me find books I’m looking for like I bought some pre code horror the Voodoo collection from IDW I didn’t see Vol 1 so he checked his 2nd store and tried to order me a copy only Vol.2 was available for order 1&3 were out of print but he told me if one comes in he’ll hold it for me
Great video, I love the content! quick question though - did you ask before filming?
A ray of sunshine!!!! 😂😂😂 goes with the territory dude lolz
What was the name of that shop with hulk hogan?
