What I often recommend people is to start off with Batman: Year One followed by The Long Halloween and then Dark Victory. To me those 3 stories are my permanent head canon for the character’s first 3 years and they just tie together so well. Seeing How Bruce’s character starts off at the beginning of Year One and then at the end of Dark Victory is just so satisfying. Not to mention the way we see the fall of the mob and rise of the supervillains in those 3 stories is also really great.
@@brendanferrell9519 I am personally not a big fan of the story myself but to each their own. I’m also not too keen on the idea of Joe Chill being a hit man to take out the Waynes be it for a supervillain or the mob or whatever, much rather prefer him being a poor/homeless petty crook who is a product of his environment.
@@sosa2mars Id agree with that. I wasn't too happy with the Chill stuff either, but the rest of the story is quite good imo. Its certainly one of the lower tier young Batman stories in terms of novels, but overall I still though it was enjoyable
@@sosa2mars My reading order for starters would be first year one.then Batman and the monster men Batman : the Mad monk Batman the man who laughs and then the long halloween. After you read those you can pretty much read everything else
Batman Year One is the perfect comic to read for first time batman comic readers. If you enjoy that, move on to The long Halloween....Dark Victory....then The dark knight returns. All those are connected so it is the same batman throughout those comics.
@SlicKDaddY Read Batman year one. Then Batman Dark Moon Rising ( wich includes Batman and the monster/Mad monk) Batman the man who laughs then the long halloween
I would actually recommend not reading TDKR to start off, because while it is a really good story, it is a deconstruction of who Batman is, so it isn't as effective to someone who doesn't understand the core of Batman yet.
I would assume that's why you read Year 1 first since that fully establishes a lot of what Batman is about. Though most people can also understand deconstruction too without having a huge background. Plenty of first year comic readers still appreciate and love Watchmen for example
I say the same thing about Killing Joke. If you’re going to start with any deconstruction book, make it Year One because it’s actually the start of post Crisis continuity anyway so it’s a great jumping on point
I agree with this. When I started reading Batman people were telling me TDKR and when I read it I found it kind of overbearing and hard to follow. I found Year One and The Long Halloween MUCH more enjoyable as stories to just jump into.
For new readers who already have an idea from the general cultural zeitgeist, Mun would actually recommend Batman: Hush. It is pretty self contained with its own standalone villain and storyline, while also giving pretty much an entire tour of the Batman universe. We run through enemies, allies, side characters, all getting at least some introductional narration from bats. It's made so you can understand what's going on even if it's pretty much your first comic. Mun believes it to be the best spot to just jump right in.
Absolutely big brain video idea. Comics are easily the hardest medium to get into cuz of all their history and how many there are, so it’s great to hear from you how you think it’s best to dive into this shit. Also, nice to see you look well-er Jay.
If somebody wants to read The Court Of Owls Saga (which you should), I would recommend buying the Essential Version. It comes with Court & City (Volumes 1 & 2).
I love comics and superhero’s so much but I feel like it’s too overwhelming to get into them in the sense of keeping up with the books and events as they release and happen
You don’t need to worry about that, these are comic storylines that came out ages ago and you buy the graphic novels so that the comics are there all in one book so you don’t need to worry about keeping up with storylines. All of these books came out ages ago as well and are old so no there’s worries with keeping up with an ongoing series or anything, just stay away from current Batman comics for now then if you’re worried about that. That’s what I did.
I'm 19, and I've probably been a Batman fan since I was 9 or so. My entry point was definitely Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, all of the many DC animated movies, and the Arkham Games. However, I always feel kind of insecure about calling myself a fan since, from middle school to today, I've only read Batman: Under The Red Hood, Batman: Hush, the first four years of the Injustice comics (if you want to count those), the first volume of the New 52 Court of Owls storyline (I bought it thinking it was the full comic), Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, and The Dark Knight Returns. I also currently own The Killing Joke, but I'm waiting until I finish another book to start reading it. Comics that are definitely high on my list of priorities would be Year One and Long Halloween. I've also obviously consumed a ton of other Batman related media, but in terms of comics, I could count them on two hands. I've been saying for years that I'd love to get into reading comics and, to be honest, I don't think I'll ever be a month to month reader. But, I'd love to read just enough to not consider myself a complete poser. Edit: Oh, and I've also read the first 7or 9 issues of the Arkham Knight prequel comics which I actually did read month to month until I gave up.
Year One was where I started and it's a great place to start. DKR right after too...Miller set the hook for me, Dixon and Grant's work on the Knightfall saga reeled me in. My first DC books were the Tim Drake Robin series though.

Degenerate Jay Not the best Batman film I admit but I respect that, at the end of the day game recognizes game. I hope you hit the subs your looking for and much support moving forward.
My recomendations for Batman is also beginning with year 1, and after that The Long Halloween, and Dark Victory! Cause in those 2 are also sequels to year 1, but in the main continuity (at least the old one before the New 52)
I’ve never read a comic only some manga. I got into Batman through the Arkham games and wanted to start reading the comics so I came here. Your extensive knowledge on this is absolutely mind blowing!
Great video Jay, this was very helpful! As someone who has never really dove into Batman beyond Batman centered games, movies, & shows. I didn’t even know some of these continuities, books, stories, and universes existed. But now I do, so I’m glad that you were able to explain everything in a way that was easy to understand.
I still think Batman: Hush is a great intro for Batman, not only does it introduce most of Batman’s rogues gallery and explore his relationship with some of those characters but it comes off as super readable and accessible & Jim Lee is always on point with character & location designs, colours etc. They have the perfect combination of Loeb’s experience and near enough mastery of writing Batman by that point and Jim Lee’s very fresh and innovative styles, it’s just a great book. I won’t say who for spoilers but there are some characters that i think it’s their best appearance of.
This video actually helped me around the time this vid was made, now my batman collection and reading experience has been awesome, recently starting collecting and reading absolute editions and I feel like a kid with that oversized look and feel. I really liked this idea Jay! I've been wanting to start reading Batman comics and this video truly helps. I hope you keep going with this format and cover some more comic characters from both DC and Marvel!
Flash up on the screen what I should google. That’s a lazy person’s request. But thank so freaking much man. I have been really wanting to dive in but the app isn’t intuitive for a beginner. Much love have a good one!
The Flash is one of my favorite super heroes and I want to read some of his comics but don’t know where to start, so I’d really appreciate if you made a Flash video for this series. I really like these types of videos and am excited to see you do more!
Grantimus Prime imo, crisis on infinite earths is a lot of fun but it’s super complicated and the story behind isn’t all that great. If you have a good knowledge of Batman and want to expand out into the wider universe I would recommend the first run of New 52 Justice League comics (would have to check but pretty sure it’s mostly Snyder/Lee) as they are great for learning more about each member and it’s perfect for the way the group slowly expands outwards and you get to meet the wider universe supporting characters while also gaining good understanding of the core teams’ relationships with eachother. If you can track down the original copies too they include some other great titles like the Shazam origin, JLA and Justice League Dark, but if you aren’t interested in the current continuity then i seriously recommend the stuff that comes immediately before it. The Green Lantern stories Blackest Night and then Brightest Day are an excellent short history of the core universe (Blackest Night is more famous but i personally prefer Brightest Day). Once you have a good idea of those characters, Flashpoint is a really great AU to explore them in a new light and just a great story all-together
I recommend you work backwards from there and focus on characters you like, you can use wikis to find stories that involve certain characters more and fill in any gaps in information you might want
Great video! I’ve been thinking about reading zero year for a while and i think im going to. I’d love it if you could cover green lantern in the future.
I think Batman Hush is a pretty good story to get into early. All of the characters should be familiar to people who have at least some batman knowledge and most of them have small descriptions given to them that allow even new readers to somewhat understand the characters, and it's a classic and beloved Batman story. edit: Batman Under the red hood movie is also very good to start for people who don't want to get straight into the comics and Is basically where I started my comic journey
I think as an alternative to this video, you should do one where it’s a showcase of where to start with looking into the character of The Joker, who is actually my personal favorite character in comic book history, and I believe he has the greatest and most unique character dynamic with a hero I have ever seen (even more than any of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery). And if you want, you can pair him with introducing The Batman Who Laughs if you bring up his series within the Dark Knight’s Metal continuity. P.S. I just got started on the Scott Snyder New 52 books and I like it so far, but I have yet to see what horrible terrors Joker does to the Batfamily when I read Death of the Family (yes I know he starts cutting faces off).
The "problem" with DC and continuity is that every time they reset it with a Crisis event, they didn't go full gusto and start over. COIE was confusing because stories from Flash, Batman, and Green Lantern spilled over. And their Retcon origins for Superman, Batman, Wonder woman, Green Lantern, and Hawkman were all done years apart between 1986 and 1990. Same thing with flash point. Batman & Green Lantern carried over as well.
What really got me into Batman was cartoon network's brave and the bold but I was a kid. Around 8 maybe younger. My first comic was flashpoint of Batman.
Batman, is my favourite character of all time, always has been, always will be, but i dont exactly have the money to buy all the comic books i want, so i watch videos after videos going over every character and every story in the batman universe, yet, i still dont feel like a “true” fan, and i really really want to change that, i want to start reading as much comic books as i can, but its also hard to keep up with the latest issues, and tips on how i can keep up with them?
first off I wouldn't let anyone quantify what a true fan is for you. For example I have not read any comics in the last year. I'm still a fan of the character, but I think that the quality was really falling off for a while and I'm taking a break. there's plenty of ways to keep up with it but one that's actually underrated is checking out the library. Believe it or not they have a ton of graphic novels that can help you kind of catch up on whatever you want to read.
@@DegenerateJay thanks for the advice, it helps. Ill also check out the library. All ive done is search “most recent batman comic” or something and i hope to find something but nothing comes up, but i will take your advice, thanks
It's so weird to have both year one and zero year Canon though but yeah everything since doomsday clock has been kind of interesting with changing continuity back and mixing them together
If you haven't read it, I highly recommend "Blind Justice" by Sam Hamm, for the 600th issue of Detective Comics in 1989. Hamm is a screenwriter (see Tim Burton's Batman). For his comic arc, Hamm did NOT go for the predictable Joker story, or an "all the rogues gallery getting together to take Batman out" plot. Instead he creates a conspiracy within Wayne Technologies, compelling Bruce Wayne and Batman to make choices, and accept consequences, that must be lived with. Hamm's story is also based on science (even if it is science fiction, but no magic, supernatural, etc), and morality, which make the best stories imo, and it explores some of the true costs of being Batman, how Bruce Wayne reinforces his obsessive focus and motivation almost daily, and the price he pays for it.
There's so many years worth that it's nice to get feedback on where to start

I recommend you work backwards from there and focus on characters you like, you can use wikis to find stories that involve certain characters more and fill in any gaps in information you might want
Great video! I’ve been thinking about reading zero year for a while and i think im going to. I’d love it if you could cover green lantern in the future.
Green arrow ! Or maybe someone like Superman or even red hood those are a few I’d like to see some videos on. KEEP DOING YOU JAY!!!!
I like how every face cam vid he zooms out revealing more of his collection, eventually it will keep getting bigger even tho it’s not expanding lmao
I would recommend Batman Knightfall too as well bc of the character defining moments.
His setup is soooooo cool tbh
This really helped me figure out where to starts
Hey Jake I'm happy to hear it! I hope to continue the series in the near future with another character!
@@DegenerateJay I’ve watched a bunch of videos like this and I think that I benefitted most off this one because of how much information you include 🙏
Thanks for the help. Me and my brother are trying to get into reading comics. This helps a lot.
Are you doing Halloween movie reviews? I think you said you would but that would be cool
Should be one later this week
Degenerate Jay that’s cool and you should definitely have more subs all the videos are great.
bro, your collection is actually so sick
I wanna start the evilntime line like the Batman who laughs
Thanks so much man for your recommendations. I have recently purchased the court of owls volume one. Glad I made made the right choice
What a great useful video! Directly to the point! Lots of options. This is great. Thanks!
I really like this kind of video, it was really helpful thanks. I'd love to see more stuff like this
You're a great guy Jay
Thanks man That means a lot! I don't know why you say that but I appreciate it lol
You’re so likeable and informative. Love your Arkham videos, keep it up man ❤️🦇
I hope you continue this series. Great video!
What really got me into Batman was cartoon network's brave and the bold but I was a kid. Around 8 maybe younger.
My first comic was flashpoint of Batman.
Can you do Superman comics next? Also that's a sick wall
i love this idea for a series I can't wait to see what it brings. also keep up the awesometacular work jay
Love the G1 Blaster, great video also! Thanks for the info.
Really enjoy your videos Jay
The New 52 Batman is a good place to start in my opinion that’s how begun and occasionally read older ones where I can
I have that same batman shirt, nice👌
I think that you should’ve included Hush and the long Halloween.
Very helpful. Been wanting to get back into comics after an 8 year absence.
My great friend Boris Johnson told me to start with Batman: Oddyssey. Sounds like a winner to me! VOTE RED!!!
Imagine being able to afford the deluxe edition of TDKR
Someone bought it for me for my birthday lol. I mean I do have a job so I can at least afford things like that but I didn't buy that myself.
@@DegenerateJay lol relatable
Great video Jay!
All ive done is search “most recent batman comic” or something and i hope to find something but nothing comes up, but i will take your advice, thanks
wow i love this guy
I love new 52 and rebirth Batman I’ve read them all and I love it
thanks for this I really need this because im about to get into batman and hopefully the flash too.
Year One is actually canon now.. With the last Metal event everything basically became canon (except obvious elseworld stuff like TDKR).
It's so weird to have both year one and zero year Canon though but yeah everything since doomsday clock has been kind of interesting with changing continuity back and mixing them together
@@DegenerateJay Yeah it definitely is weird fs.
Well this has been really useful, thanks Jay!
keep up the good work jay i think i'll like this series
