    Just did this today with ~$60 OEM flares bought online (looks like same ones shown in this video). Absolutely great final appearance. The only thing I did different was use rust reformer before installing and I cut around the bottom bolts that were frozen in this video. I had a little more rust on the fender around that bolt and feared the mount would break free. Used simple wire cutters to cut the plastic mud flap, since they get scrapped anyway. My only complaint is that the fasteners were crap and the heads kept breaking. Save your original clips as I needed to reuse 4 of them. This simple modification will prob buy me two years of good looks. I love this old truck!

      Yeah but I just wanted to show the actual install of the flares. A lot of people just do the cover up like this. It really wasn’t worth doing anything in this case because the truck was rusted to the point where it will for sure come back and it’s a 18 year old truck with 240k

  • @christopherdeitz5436
    @christopherdeitz5436 4 года назад +4

    I would have Por-15`d under the wheel wells as far I could reach prior to covering up the rust, POR-15 right over the rust and up underneath, then put the Flares on.

      As big of a crap hole that this state is, I'm glad we at least don't have annual inspections. It should be unlawful for them to force you to fix that crap just because of a little bit of body rust. Especially when it's the state's fault for putting down salt in the winter.

  • @mikereilly8376
    @mikereilly8376 4 года назад +1

    Should have used the penetrant FIRST before getting the torch out. And don't ever reinstall rusty bolts that are dry. Lubed bolts always makes the reassembly go smoother......and it shows that you care.

    • @TonyTheTruckGuy

    • @TonyTheTruckGuy
      @TonyTheTruckGuy  5 лет назад

      The rocker and corner panels aren’t much for the part themselves, but the labor and paint will be costly. Unfortunately I haven’t had enough body work done to give an accurate estimate, and I’m not good at body work myself. I’d guess a couple thousand to get it done right.

      If salt is a factor it will probably speed up the rust a bit. I’d recommend washing and drying the truck, then cover the rust with POR-15 or something before putting the flares on. This truck is an 01 with 300k on it, so I was more concerned with just the looks.

      You COULD put them back on, but the flares are going to mess with how they mount. You’d possibly need longer fasteners and the flaps probably won’t sit as flush as they used to, which is why I didn’t reinstall mine.
